If I were the Phillies, I’d go with blash. He’s older and doesn’t seem quite as athletic as goeddel, but hit really well at AAA, whereas goeddel had only reached AA last year

Teams are more likely to pick a toolsy athletic player with a clear carrying skill, such as speed or defense. That’s how Deshields got picked by the Rangers (and stuck) last year.

Your reasoning is backwards. You want young, athletic players.

Just a boneheaded decision by the Rays to leave this guy unprotected. Very raw and talented and finally looks like he is putting it all together at the upper minors.
Did they really think someone with his skill set would go undrafted or not stick with a bad team? And don’t see why he won’t stick with Philly unless he just embarrasses himself. They’ll give him every chance.

He’s unlikely to stick, even on the Phils, for a full season. That’s the fate of almost all Rule 5 picks. Teams can’t protect everyone.

It would actually be pretty shocking if he didn’t stick. The Phils have done really well in the Rule 5 and usually their players stick barring them being REALLY bad. In addition, the number of players that stick from the Rule 5 draft has been trending upwards the last few years, with 10 of 14 players taken last year sticking.

I’d say it’s better than 50-50 that he sticks. The Phillies will show patience like they did with Herrera last year. They DID let Inciarte go before Spring Training a couple years ago after taking him in the Rule 5, but that was when Rueben was delusional thinking they had a shot in 2013. Goeddel would be a nice “free” addition to the rebuild, hopefully they pick him and manage to hang onto him.

Another year another Rays prospect going #1 in the Rule 5.. Lets hope Goeddel doesn’t happen to sustain a 6 month injury that lets him stay with the Phils the same way Oscar Hernandez did with the Dbacks.

Astro’s with Pena? There is a lot better options out there. He does throw out a lot of base runners but has a hard time at the plate. What’s he gonna do with MLB? Taylor Davis with the Cubs would be a more viable options, good defensively, calls great games, and the dude can hit! Davis has been over .300 the last 2 seasons marching back and forth from AA/AAA and has power. I believe a way better fit.
