Paddy
Hey cashman, go and add to the Yankees rotation and sign Fister on the cheap.
jonscriff
Agreed id give one year 5 mil with incentives of about 7 million with a player option that sounds pretty good right?
bruinsfan94 2
Why would Fister do that? He is looking for 2/22. It would cost at least 10-12 million for a season of him.
SabermetricsForLife
Only problem is Steinbrenner doesn’t want to add to the payroll this year.
Paddy
Steinbrenner needs to leave the bean counting to his accountants. Lower the price for seats so I am not dropping $2k every time I take the fam to a game if u r gonna pinch pennies! Give me a break. Our rotation is a few injuries away from total disaster. Go get Fister!
cmb1974
Agreed O’s should go after fister than trade for a pitcher at deadline if they are in hunt
Paddy
Hey cashman, go sign fister ok the cheap and bolster our fragile rotation!
mibenavi
Please cashman for the love of god get fister or gallardo Yankees fans deserve it …
SabermetricsForLife
I’m guessing that isn’t going to happen based on this comment: Excerpt from a trade tumors article: Owner Hal Steinbrenner told Jon Heyman yesterday that he doesn’t see much room to add even this year: “I’m not comfortable with the payroll being too much higher than it is now.”
SabermetricsForLife
I doubt that is going to happen based on this report:
Notably, too, owner Hal Steinbrenner told Jon Heyman yesterday that he doesn’t see much room to add even this year: “I’m not comfortable with the payroll being too much higher than it is now.”

It makes no sense for the Rays to give Desmond 8-10m on a 1y deal in some slim hopes he can rewind the clock to 2012 and have a decent season again, when they have Brad Miller who will be making around 1.5m this season and had nearly identical numbers as Desmond did last year and plays nearly equal “D” at SS, plus can also play multiple other places as well if needed.
No more James Loney contracts to finished players, like Desmond. Tampa cannot afford them like larger markets can. Let someone like the mets sign this guy, not the Rays.
bruinsfan94 2
Desmond is a perfect fit for them. For a guy who was expected to get 100 million, it its a slightly high risk but tons of reward.
smelliott00
I agree. He still has crazy power, especially from the shortstop position, and I wouldn’t bet against him getting closer to his career average numbers than his 2015 numbers. That’s definitely a bet worth taking for Tampa, a team that always has great pitching but lacks on the offensive side. If he has a great year, he could make the Rays a really good team.
kiermaier
Thats true but desmond has always struggled on defense and is very streaky he isnt worth giving up a 1st round pick to sign him.
seamaholic 2
Meh. No place to play him really. 30 year old shortstops often don’t “recover” from a bad year. That’s just their new normal. Miller’s probably better.
johnsilver
Don’t think so myself. Didn’t make sense to throw money at Pablo Sandoval, or BJ Upton who both had been trending down for several years themselves and so called stats folks (not saying yourself there bruins) were yapping away how both were work mega millions, while some of us were saying watch out.. Both were nearing the finish line..
I also think Desmond and throw Howie Kendrick into that list also.
therealryan
B.J. Upton obviously hasn’t worked as a signing, but now you are making things up to fit your narrative. He wasn’t trending down for several years at all. His wRC+ was 107, 113, 108 and his HRs were actually trending up at 18, 23, and 28 leading to his free agency.
Even funnier, Upton has actually now been trending up the last 3 seasons. He’s increased his wRC+ 56, 75, 110 and was a solid contributor last season with 1.6 fWAR in only 228 PA.
bbatardo
Desmond isn’t worth a pillow contract with draft compensation tied to him. Sure maybe team that signs him can give him QO if he has bounce back year but that is a big if
Brentus07
Would love to see Desmond sign, but I think I’d rather have us make a deal with the Rockies. Baez strikes out too much and apparently we wouldn’t be getting Soler. Rays and Rockies’ needs match up better
greatd
The Mariners should take a shot on a couple of these guys If they want to win now. Also the Nationals should upgrade a bit more to put them over the Mets a bit more. They shouldn’t count on injury prone Zimmerman and Werth to do much and just move on.

Corey Dickerson, career (265 G):
In Colorado: 1.085 OPS
Everywhere else: .695 OPS
Dude’s a Denver mirage, I wouldn’t put him on the same tier as Javier Baez.
theoutlaw321
Hmm the nationals would have to improve to be close to the mets in order to ‘put them over the mets a bit more.’

I’ve honestly never understood how defense is hard. I can understand the lack of range or arm strength but it’s always been so easy as a concept to learn, at least for me. I understand and do not pretend to have the skills or athletic ability to play beyond high school ball but the only position that has ever really been a struggle to learn is catcher. But down, glove down, two steps back if you’re in the outfield, no runners on take a knee if you’re on an outfield grounder, call for the ball, hand over glove, turn as you catch if you’re the cutoff and line the cutoff man up if not, shout where the play is at before the pitch, always back up somewhere to the best of your ability.
jtmorgan
But you’re being compared to the average of other professional athletes. Even the worse defenders would be great compared to the average person. You are being compared against the best 30-50 players playing defense at a particular position.
Jorge Soler Powered
Why would the Cubs trade Baez for another OF? That makes zero sense. Dickerson isn’t better than the 3 starters, and isn’t a huge upgrade over Coghlan. Baez still has a lot of potential, and is working out in the OF too. Which means we could potentially fill in at 7 positions on the diamond.
Ken M.
Never anywhere in articles about Hanley is it mentioned he hurt his shoulder in the beginning of May or that when he did, he had a .954OPS.
Karmada
What are the Cubs’ reasonable expectations in dealing Baez? Especially with the Rays. Snell? McGee?
cmb1974
It looks as Baez is ready to break the lineup and McGee should get him with someone else
