Very interesting that you have Chapman getting such a large raise with so few platform saves. As you know, platform saves almost single-handedly drives salaries for relievers (even though it shouldn’t) so with 33 saves, it’s going to be hard to defy precedent and give him more than Jim Johnson who had 50 saves.

I don’t want to speak for Matt, but I think that’s part of the reason that Matt wrote this article in the first place., and he touches on it within the post.
In most second- third- and fourth-time arbitration cases, the platform season is the primary basis for raises. However, with closers, there’s been a definite trend of career saves totals serving as a significant factor in raises.
