R.I.P.
ducky
You do realize that your comment is just you trying to make yourself feel better right? Because you never met him and don’t actually care, you are just blindly saying stuff to make yourself feel better. Pretty ridiculous and disgusting that you make this comment to make yourself feel better when you truly don’t care. I will say this to you as the others, stop trying to feel good about yourself by making such hollow comments.

I still don’t understand that Billy Butler deal. 3/30 for a declining, .700 OPS DH who doesn’t even bother packing a glove in his bag (probably), and is dead weight on the bases…just defies common sense.
Are A’s fans tired of seeing him hit into double plays yet?
rugrat907
Yes. It was a stupid signing, even with the hope of a dead cat bounce. I’d say something snarky, but want to be respectful on the comments for this group because of the unfortunate death of Rosario.

Having a career .OBP of .350 ain’t bad, nor is a career .290 BA
No Soup For Yu!
Why are you looking at his career numbers instead of what his most recent numbers? Butler was noticeably in decline when the A’s signed him.
2012 – .313/.373/.510, .882 OPS
2013 – .289/.374/.412, .787 OPS
2014 – .271/.323/.379, .702 OPS
His power output shrunk dramatically in 2013 and it got even worse in 2014. He’s always been a huge negative on the bases and in the field. It doesn’t matter what his career OBP and BA are. What matters is the fact that over the last two years, Butler has slashed .261/.323/.385. While that’s not a terrible batting line overall, in fact it’s roughly league average, is that the kind of production you want out of a DH who already negates a lot of the value his hitting provides through his poor baserunning and inability to field? This is a bad contract no matter how you slice it.

A’s need to spend that revenue sharing in some way. They also seem to have the worst luck ever with free agent hitters: Chavez, Dye, etc no one came close to their ceiling. Butler was dynamite in 2012, how did he hit so well that year and really terribly ever since?
jchiaratti
Yes it was a terrible signing, but the damage is done and A’s fan just have to live with it now and hope his off-season conditioning program they put him on actually does some good. As for the GIDP, A’s fan take solace in the fact he didn’t lead the league in them (Trevor Plouffe did) along with the fact that he tied Robinson Cano. Amusingly, he only GIDP’d 2 more times than his “replacement”, Kendrys Morales.

Lincecum would be a nice fit in the back end of the Padres rotation, not to mention he pitches well at Petco. They should make an offer to him like the Giants did for Span before his “personal showcase”. Get him before the hype, c’mon Preller!
digiggianni
Lincecum at Petco Park in 116IP is 9-3 with a 2.41ERA in 18G (17GS) with a 1.103WHIP. I’d say that’s a pretty good incentive to go and get him. Granted those numbers are from a pretty bad offensive team up until 2015, but still very impressive.
bleacherbum
Not to mention he has thrown both of his career no hitters against the Padres, one at Petco and one at AT&T but bottom line those stats are way too impressive to ignore. Some guys just like to pitch at certain parks and on certain mounds, but you are 100% spot on about the Padres mediocre offense during the stretch of time where Lincecum has put up those numbers but still, the guy flat out knows how to pitch and is a winner. Even if the Padres have to over pay a little bit to get him before his Februrary showcase, they should. Keep him in the NL West with lineups and teams he is familiar with and he will be a solid number 4 starter if he can stay healthy.
digiggianni
Watch him sign with the Padres and get destroyed by the Giants. An Anti-No-Hitter. Really classy and further bury the Padres franchise. Really would piss me off.

If Lincecum really wanted to compete and succeed, he’d take an incentive based deal in Pittsburgh. Could you imagine if Cole/Liriano/Lincecum/Neise were all pitching up to their potential?
bleacherbum
Yeah that would be solid, can’t go wrong there either, I’m a padre fan and would love him in San Diego but he would be a fit in Pittsburgh as well, both organizations have a recent history of signing guys like this in the back end of their careers and getting a little more out of them. It will be interesting to see who signs him and what it ends up costing. Regardless if it’s Lincecum, Fister, or Latos, I see the Bucs as the top suitor for any of the 3 with the Padres just only being interested in Lincecum mainly because he will most likely be the most affordable of the 3. Well him and Latos. Orioles are the other team to keep and eye on who could swoop in and grab one of these guys.
marlinsnation
Would be a huge veteran presence for a crippled Marlins Rotation. Might as well add Lincecum as a 4th or 5th starter to a young Marlins team trying to contend, then they are set for the 2016 season.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
Lincecum in a Padres uniform, now that would be a site to see.

Blackmon says Parra has one of the best arms in the league. After watching Parra as an Oriole the last few months of the season his arm looks like a wet noodle.
baronbeard
Anyone know what type of price Lincecum will command?
James7430
No sure what kind he would command, but I could see teams looking for a contract in the area of $5M guaranteed loaded with incentives. The real question is whether he lands a SP or bullpen gig.
In the short term, if he’s unable to get a long term or big contract (which is likely) it may be a good move on his part to take a 1 year deal with a team like Philly that already has enough SPs. The contract could have an agreement he gets traded to a contender at the deadline. It could push him to the pen, where he would have a chance to showcase himself in that role. If he pitches well and is healthy, he gets traded and sets himself up for a bigger payday next year. It’s a win/win for the team as well, presuming he’s healthy. If not, it’s not a big investment.
That being said, I still think it’s more likely he gets a SP offer with another team instead of the Philly scenario.

a minor league deal… dude is toast
