The Yankees do have other options as a possible backup for Headley if the need arises. They can use Ronald Torreyes just to name one. Now of course you don’t want to go for the bulk of the season having to us use one of these guys but for short term help it shouldn’t be a problem.
sorayablue
Trust me, you don’t want Torreyes getting regular playing time. Very low baseball IQ.

Headley and Castro combined for a 1.7 WAR last year, yikes. Maybe they should let Refsnyder get some regular AB’s. Saw him quite a bit in the minors he is a poor defender but he can swing it. He reminded me of a right handed Daniel Murphy.
ccremer2
Agreed. Refsnyder has been known to have defensive struggled since his position change into the infield. He’s still young and can learn on the go. His bat is valued much more than his defense.

“As with all valued players”. boras hype machine is working overtime. Alvarez joins a list of fringe players he has shafted with his hard line tactics. One day, perhaps people lucky to have jobs will figure it out.
Steve Adams
Alvarez got a $6MM signing bonus in the draft and has earned $14.5MM worth of player salaries to this point in his career. I don’t know that he’s really been shafted.
To your larger point, I suppose it’s true that some of Boras’ lower-profile clients have ended up in poor situations, but that’s true of most agencies.. Plenty of his fringy guys have come out pretty well… Pelfrey, Alex Guerrero, Oliver Perez…. heck he got Willie Bloomquist back-to-back two-year deals spanning his ages 34-37 seasons.
Not sure why I’m defending Scott Boras’ honor, haha, but I’ve always kind of considered the notion that low-profile Boras guys get screwed to be somewhat of a misperception.

You misunderstand Steve. He was highly touted in the draft. Turned down big money from Boston 1st time around as a HS kid (with Boras advising), so can’t say a mistake there either. My point is he isn’t an impact, or high value player now. Neither was Varitek any impact player his 2nd trip thru FA, Felipe Lopez and multiple other non impact, even fringe players he hasn’t helped later on in their respective careers, rather hindered.
Is it the players fault also for loyalty for what he did earlier? Sure, but losing money and not having a job, some period (Lopez) is on him and his never bend (except the truth) attitude.

Ramon Santiago is still available if the Mariners need a veteran infielder. He had a good winter batting lead off for Escogido in the Dominican winter ball league playing second and short.

I miss him on the Reds. Hard worker and seems like a great guy.

For the love of Peter please stop confusing draft pick compensation with the draft pick penalty. Its only the penalty that hurts players. It works the same as a tax. Players should not be taxed to exercise their right to free agency after 6-7 years of servitude. In some cases they are getting taxed twice if they become free agents twice. The second time is even more ridiculous because the team losing the player had no development cost

Every year there’s a player or two whose agent misjudges the market. Desmond appears to be one of those this year along with Freese and Gallardo.

Freese is a puzzle to me too. I’ve met with him on a few occasions. Great Guy! Plus, he can come through in the clutch, as displayed in the 2011 Playoffs
