It’s interesting what they are doing with Pederson. Not sure how drastic it’ll be but I suggest, why not just mimic somebodys swing, i.e Griffey, McGriff etc.

Ummm Melvin it’s a little late In the game to “live up to expectations”. Your a few years away from retiring. The high expectations went out the window a long time ago.

Olivera is actually pretty cheap. Only about 5 mil a year. Remains to be seen what he can do. Meanwhile Woods velocity was already 2 mph down last year. Not a huge loss for the gamble the Braves took.

He’s certainly not worth the money that’s still on his contract, but if he can put up decent numbers and be reliable on defense, he’ll be serviceable.

I don’t wish injury on Wood. But maybe that could quiet down the whiners of the Olivera trade.
Brixton
Its not like they’re complaining for no reason.
The Braves dumped a good, young controllable starter, a top 50 prospect, a valuable trade chip in Jim Johnson, and Luis Avilan for a 30 year old expensive player who has never played in the big leagues, a sandwich draft pick and a TJ lefty reliever.

Actually, Olivera is extremely cheap. About 5 mil a year. Woods velocity is also about 2 mph down on top of the fact that he has a higher likelihood of having a problem. Olivera remains an enigma but imo all the Braves really lost was peraza.

I wouldn’t call Olivera expensive at all and Perazza’s (the top 50 prospect) skills don’t seem to translate into him being a superstar. The Braves have a surplus of starting pitching depth coming up so moving Wood and bullpen pieces for a player who could be an above average bat when they contend again is a risk worth taking in my opinion.
Gogerty
Right now honestly Wood is the only thing that mattered on that trade. LAD pays the who signing bonus so we pay I believe 6-8MM a year for Olivera. Pereza has already been shipped out in another trade. Essentially the Braves got what the wanted when they were outbid by LAD and pretty certain Swanson and Albies will have the infield taken care of.

“a valuable trade chip in Jim Johnson,” – on what planet is this true?

i think the ‘whiners’ will continue until somebody actually finds a position for Hector Olivera…
Gogerty
I agree. Just hoping the OF experiment is not as bad as when Chipper was out there.

Might get the “whiners” to admit that trading Wood was a move that made a lot of sense, but we’re still not at a place where you’ll see many of them say that getting Olivera in return was the best possible outcome.
Gogerty
I agree, still hoping for the best.

Upton put up his 4th highest wRC+ last season, it’s safe to say he’s pretty much back to his Rays form and should play everyday this year, his splits were great too, so he can hit either side. Actually, if you cut out his Atlanta years his career stats look normal and he’s an above average offensive player. He’ll probably not be a superstar but he might come close to being worth $15M a year which by the way, isn’t superstar money anymore.
I wonder why he didn’t do so well in Atlanta? Did their hitting coach mess with him too much?
Gogerty
I have wondered what the hell happened there as well. Maybe the pressure of playing with his brother, but of course that wasn’t the case last year. Hitting coach might be the right call.
CursedRangers
He’s only had 2 good years in his entire career. So yes, last year was one of his better years. But when he has sucked most of his career, having his 4th best year doesn’t mean much. At $15M/year he is overpaid.
