I think Lucroy to Houston is an interesting idea. Castro is a great defender, but has an expiring contract and is weak when it comes to the bat. It always boils down to price, but I feel like a bat like Lucroys makes that a pretty good lineup. Too many low BA high K guys lower in the lineup (castro, valbuena, rasmus, singleton). That’s assuming Singleton wins the job and doesn’t vastly improve. Best case scenario is he improves and only three of those guys are chucked at the bottom. Not sure how Lucroy’s defense stacks up to Castros, but it would be a welcome addition to the lineup IMO.

Brewers need to be top 5 bad for a few years to get some stud players. Only way to do a true rebuild. Most of the players they have in the minors are decent but not really standout, top of the food chain players. They need to get a couple of #1 type starters and an excellent offensive/defensive CFer, at least.

While I agree the Brewers lack a potential ace in their farm system, they do have a couple pitchers who could develop into one in Lopez and Hader. Getting another top 5 pick next season would help along with drafting one this year with our first round pick and acquiring yet another in a Lucroy trade. Odds are all will not work out but the Brewers could also look to sign one via free agency in a few years if their young guys begin to produce.
As for needing to find an offensive/defensive CF we already have Phillips a year away and Taylor as a back up. I would still consider corner infielders and catcher our two biggest needs. But we have time to add depth in the draft and through trades and signings.

can i just say how much i enjoy these offseason reviews? fantastic summaries. thanks boys.
as to the Brewers, it’s hard to find fault. they now have a #5-#9 farm system and a ton of talent at the very low minors who could buoy that ranking next year this time. they shed a bunch of money giving them flexibility..i can foresee the Brewers being one of those clubs who could absorb a bad contract attached to a prospect (a la more Aaron Hill deals…Pablo Sandoval anyone?). it also gives room to be aggressive internationally if they desire. the GM handover seems to be going smoothly and the incredible roster churn seems well aligned to a long range strategy.
