Ronald Torreyes is back with the Yankees. As he was claimed

Wonder if in a matter of balancing needs, Braves and Angels could hook up on a CJ and $3M for Bourn and Swish. Clears Braves of two contracts they have no room for and gives them a reliable starter after he comes off DL. For the Angels, gives them a platoon for LF and saves them $3.5M.
Philliesfan4life
that could work, but right now Nava is having a great spring training. I mean I think the angels could trade wilson to the marlins.
Gogerty
Probably too much salary for one player on the Marlins, at least a year rental. What would they give up for him if they were even WS contenders?
Philliesfan4life
they have an outfielder that they could trade, I forget his name. Or just a team who could use a veteran in their rotation

In a perfect world, the Marlins would be a great choice to send CJ, however, the Marlins would ask the Angels to pay up to $18M of his salary, which would seem to be in line with what the Angels did for Hamilton and Texas. But, If there was a team that would take CJ and 87% of his salary, and Moreno was willing to do so, I think it would already have been done. I think CJ won’t be sought after until much of his 2016 contract has been paid off in more like July or August, but only if he is healthy and pitching decently.

The Braves are not planning on winning this year. So who cares about a reliable starter in 2016? They plan to just watch the kids play and save money for a run in 2017 or 2018. I think the best play for the Angels is to wait and see with CJ. If the Angels figure out their rotation problems and compete, then they have a guy who is a potential ace. I find it likely that the Angels will not be able to keep pace with Houston, Seattle or Texas and they sell a rebounded CJ Wilson at the deadline to help rebuild their miserable farm system.
Gogerty
Reliable innings eater saves other arms and with his experience can help the young kids out with McDowell. Plus they have a glut of OFers anyway. Swap of bad contracts and salary relief for Angels works out well, in my opinion. I am not saying they trade Enciarte or a top prospect.
Philliesfan4life
Maybe swisher or bourne plus a low level prospect for him
Gogerty
But that is only to the benefit of LAA. Saves them $13M, unless that is taking all of Swish’s contract and no money covered by CLE than I say yeah. Then Bourn is fully covered by CLE.
Philliesfan4life
I think the angels will wait and see, Nava is playing on fire right now
Gogerty
True, he is playing well. Always fun to ballpark scenarios.
Rally Weimaraner
That doesn’t help either team. Bourn and Swisher have been genuinely terrible for 2 years making them unless acquisition for the Angels. Wilson is a free agent at the end of the season making him worthless to the rebuilding Braves even if he is healthy a productive.
Gogerty
Bad contracts generally do not benefit any team. Hints the swap and $$ benefit to the Angels.
Vinny Time
I have not seen a major league roster so devoid of talent in recent memory. Beyond Trout, Richards, and SS there is little on this team. Arte has gone from mad spender to scrooge. Not a sensible way to run a team.
Okie_baseball
They are the remnant of a dying GM strategy. The days of “buy all the big free agents” are gone. You HAVE to have a farm system in the modern game. It is going to be tough sledding for the Angels fans until they get out from under the contracts of Albert, Weaver and Wilson.
Philliesfan4life
With Wilson Weaver and Smith coming off the books, the angels can use that money to buy next year, but I do see them keeping smith
SoCalShu
A lot of that money coming off Weaver
Philliesfan4life
weaver and wilson combined is about 40 million, not sure how much for smith but I think they hold onto smith.
Philliesfan4life
I think next year they give extensions to Calhoun and Richards. there will be plenty of money to spend next year and in 2018.
Okie_baseball
I like Calhoun a lot. He should get an extension.
Philliesfan4life
Calhoun is a solid player and very underrated , Him along with richards and trout are the core of the team right now.

With Moreno being the type of owner who makes emotional decisions about spending, I find it hard to envision him spending the entire 2016 campaign without opening his purse to pursue any needs that may arrive besides the obvious ones we are aware of. This offseason has been one that all Angels fans would like to forget, no doubt, but I have faith that new GM Eppler will be turned loose to make some of the same type of under the radar moves he was allowed to make while a member of the Yanks. I feel that if the Angels are even close by the break, they will pursue the options made available by others who feel the need to sell off players at that point. The entire Angel offseason can be dubbed “Luxury Tax Fear”. That is just not how Moreno works and I can see them shoring up their deficiencies even if it is only to set up for a run in 2017. Although, 2016 will not be a dead season for the Angels. Even with the lack of position certainty at 2-3 positions, the Angels simply have too much talent to fall by the wayside in a very competitive division.

Agree. And from the looks of things in ST the Angels’ Minor League System is not that bad either (despite the lack of “top prospects” currently …. they could restock the higher levels with out of options folks who need a little more time and an opportunity to get a call up).
Some of the Angels’ prospects look much better than advertised. To my delight (so far).
thechiguy
I agree with you. I have seen some games this spring that totally express your point. The future is not as dim as the experts predict! Losing Featherston really bothered me though, after they spent the entire season trying to keep him on the active roster in order to retain his rights, only to try to slip him through the cracks and lose him to the guy who originally organized the trade to get him from the Cubs in the rule V draft. The good thing about those prospects is that they could potentially become very useful to the Angel organization in the future, sooner or later based on their placement in the organization thus far. The bad thing is, prospects(or even non-prospects) are the usual currency used to bring back players in trade. So, if the Halos are to go out and try to acquire a player mid-summer, those useful pieces will be the coin used to bring potential players back. Diminishing their farm system even more, with those prospects you admire being most likely the ones heading in a different direction in order to complete a trade. I Love the Halos, and for your peace of mind and my hopefulness of a great season, they find a way to make moves without sending those potential useful pieces to other clubs while still adding a major piece or two to their big league club.
