Interesting fit, but it gives the Pirates the same infield flexibility as they had last year with Walker. I wonder how this affects the promotion of guys like Alan Hanson and Max Moroff.
jimmyz
Moroff wasn’t likely to get called up unless there were a bunch of injuries, maybe a September call up for the experience but not to be a significant contributor this year. Hanson is basically guaranteed to start in AAA now but should still come up at some point.
chri
So who is the best FA now still on the market?
The Oregonian
Probably Morneau if he still wants to play.
SupremeZeus
Mark Buehrle. Still technically a FA, hasn’t retired yet. Reportedly turned down deals in the 1 yr $15M range.
kingfelix34
15 mil for buehrle?
Bobby Sweet
You know what you’re getting with Buehrle. 1 year and $15M for him is significantly better than what the Royals gave Ian Kennedy – and I like that signing.
bearsfan49055
White Sox need to sign Buehrle desperately!!!!
McGlynn
great signing, the infield is almost as flexible as it was last year, but much cheaper now.
Philliesfan4life
Wow Arte , couldn’t bring back freese . He will be missed in the club house
enriquepollzzo
Yeah the 12 things guys on the team actually say to each other over the course of the season may now be 11
ryanw-2
What does it have to do with Arte? They offered Freese 2 years, $18 million. Freese overvalued himself and now he’s paying the price.
reignaado
Nice signing, place Kang there at SS, his original position in the KBO, and put Mercer in the backup role.
st1300b 2
Exactly
Hking204
Cheap addition. High ceiling for very little money
A'sfaninUK
His ceiling is about 2.5 fWAR, its not high, but it is pretty decent, especially at that cost. Great move.
Vinny Time
Halos made a bad mistake by not resigning Freese to play 3B which could have shifted Escobar to 2B and made that a plus position. Instead 3B and 2B are weak as well as the rest of their roster. Arte your team is awful.
sddew
I agree 100% with this comment.
A'sfaninUK
I just looked at their projected starting lineup and they are clearly the worst team in the AL right now. All the prospects have to break out for them to contend. They have no depth, a bad bullpen and now Weaver can’t even hit 80 with his fastball? They don’t even look good at full strength, is Daniel Nava seriously their #2 hitter? This team is going to finish last in the West.
Lanidrac
I think the A’s are just as bad if not worse, but yeah it doesn’t look good for baseball fans out in Anaheim. This is what happens when you blow your budget on stupid mega contracts.
Philliesfan4life
but nava is hitting like over .600 I thought
ryanw-2
Angels offered him 2 years, $18 million. Freese overvalued himself. He’s the one who made the mistake, like many other free agents did this winter.
Vinny Time
Halos had the entire off season to modify their offer when there were no takers until spring training began.
L.Wrong Hubbard
Smart move
L.Wrong Hubbard
Good move
gohalos14
Great signing for the Pirates. For only 3MM the Angels should have re-signed him to play third and moved Escobar to second.
RedFeather
Good move. He will do well in the NL Central. Back in the discussion where he belongs and wearing his old high school colors from Layette in STL.
cardfan2011
Good for him, hope him the best

This is actually the second time David Freese will be a Pirate. When he was a kid, his dad was the manager of the Pond Pirates. I was on the Ballwin Falcons. They beat us almost every time.
A'sfaninUK
Pretty long lineup the Pirates have when Kang returns….
Polanco
Harrison
McCutchen
Marte
Kang
Freese
Cervelli
Jaso/Morse
gohalos14
NL Central ought to be interesting again.
mwk89
may be the best value signing of the offseason
theeterps
While it would make the most sense to plug Freese at 3B and push Kang back to SS (when he returns in mid April), Clint Hurdle showed last year that his ultimate preference was to keep Mercer in the starting lineup for his glove, even after the Aramis Ramirez acquisition. The fact that the Pirates have already stated that the plan is for Freese to platoon with Jaso at 1B indicates they have no intentions of forming a Freese-Kang left side of the infield. However, if Mercer’s bat starts off as slowly as it did last year, Hurdle may not have a choice. Either way, clearly a great bargain signing that immediately gives the Pirates much needed depth.
EndinStealth
Glad David found a home. Pittsburgh will be as good as its pitching. Cole and Liriano are solid. But it’s a little questionable after that. McCutchen needs to have another Mvp caliber year to make this season a challenge.
