Why would the Tigers look to trade Holaday? He’s a reliable backup for Salty and could even be their #1 if Salty gets hurt.

I would imagine that hes out of options is the biggest issue.
dwilson10
Yeah but I don’t see why he wouldn’t make the team. The article said Gonzalez will go to AAA as a 3rd Tigers catcher. So it seems like they don’t quite feel that he’s ready. I don’t know much on the Tigers so I was just wondering.

James McCann is Detroit’s No. 1 catcher. Saltalamacchia is backing up McCann. Suppose I should’ve mentioned that in the post, but I’ll tack it on now.
dwilson10
Ok that makes a lot more sense. Since the Tigers consider Gonzalez the 3rd catcher does that mean Holaday is the odd man out?
Conely4
Where is he going to go though? He is out of minor league options. If we try to send him down to the minors, we will be basically letting him go. And the Tigers would be idiots to carry three catchers.

Must have missed it when Salty signed with the Tigers. Salty could always hit but from what I remember his defense was pretty lousy. Has his defense behind the plate improve at all since his days with the Red Sox? Also, Going from Scherzer + Price to Zim + Sanchez is a pretty big downgrade. I could see the Tigers in WC contention this year if hinge break right but I see the Royals taking the ALC again.
stymeedone
Yes, Zimmerman, Sanchez does seem like a step back from Scherzer, Price, but those two only pitched together for half a season. During that time, Verlander was not healthy. Now, Verlander is healthy, so it’s actually a change from Scherzer, Price to Verlander, Zimmerman. It doesn’t matter anyway, since they won’t be competing against Scherzer, Price, but against Ventura, Volquez. I like the Tigers chances there.

Verlander has had an odd career. He’s probably one of the harder players to predict how their season will go.

I refer to see Bryan Holiday backing up James McCann. Aren’t Tiger fans tired of watching poor defensive teams and DH types playing in the field?

Personally, I feel Holaday would do better at third then our current weak spot.
oldleftylong
Seriously? Better than Nick??

The consensus seems to be that the Zimmermann contract is a great value, but I feel that Zimmermann is a good pitcher being paid like a great one.
