I wish we could actually do what Martin Luther King spoke about. Judge a man by the content of his character and not the color of his skin. It should work both ways, people should definitely not be held down because of their skin color, nor should they be lifted up because of their skin color. That is just as big of an insult, because it implies that people can’t get a job without a handout. It would be great if skin color was a completely irrelevant topic, but that won’t happen in my lifetime and probably not in my kid’s lifetime.

I wish, it would be great everyone had the same thoughts instead of preconceived notions based on race ethnicity etc. I think programs like these are all about opportunity and opening a door. It does a great disservice if people are given handouts. I don’t think or at least I hope that’s not the purpose behind this.
Ray Ray
Yeah unfortunately these perfect thoughts have to be applied to imperfect human beings. Otherwise everything would be great.

Ray, I don’t think that providing an equal opportunity is a ‘handout.’ It is because of programs like these, that provide the landscape that MLK wanted for us. Without people willing to speak up about inequality in the workplace, it won’t happen. Of course a majority of us KNOW that all opportunities should be provided to those who are most qualified and deserving, but without a program or policy in place to implement it, naturally, it won’t happen. A quick example; even though more and more people came to terms with equality becoming the norm in the United States, the 14th Amendment was necessary in order to implement it and help assist motion for it to become a standard way of life in society. Everyone wasn’t just going to just GIVE equal protection under state law as a citizen to minorities without assist from the government and pushing for the amendment..

RayRay- it’s serious people that think you are the PROBLEM. NO place in this article have they mentioned handouts. Most sensible people understand that most companies/teams hire people that they are “comfortable” or looks like them. Not necessarily the most qualified. The purpose of this program is to identify
baseballrat
And help prepare qualified people. Nothing more
Ray Ray
The Nazis didn’t specifically mention furnaces to the public either, but they still existed. Not that I am comparing the seriousness of the two, just that people don’t always tell exactly the truth in press releases. BTW, no need to be pointing fingers at me because I have never held anyone down in my life. But you would rather focus on one word in my comment rather than the whole comment which fully explains that position. It’s okay because we live in a bullet point society where the underlying facts are not nearly as important to most people as the catch phrases or buzzwords.

Yes white men have it soooooo bad! Lolololololol

MLB is a billion dollar industry, but women are and have always been massively underrepresented, its such a narrow view of the world of sports that absolutely needs to change and kudos to MLB for being aware of this and creating this incredible new wing led by one of the nicest guys in the game. Ty deserves so much credit for being a model of how to break into the game with no background and he absolutely needs to GM at some point in his life, he was a massive part of the Pirates return to relevance and did incredible work – especially internationally – with Atlanta. Would love to see those scouting skills overseeing a MLB in the future.

Its actually really corny to troll a baseball site with non-baseball crud. Grow up.

How could anybody say anything bad abou–oh. Damn.

Comment sections like this make me pine for the days when things were actually moderated here. The level of thinking has gone waaaaay downhill. Sad.
A'sfaninUK
Yeah, remember when the guidelines were really strict? They changed this format and its basically the worst possible one they could have changed it too.
Anyway I would hope the good people at MLBTR realize that if they are going to talk about race and diversity in MLB on here, to close the comment sections for those posts off.
Kayrall
I agree that this comment format is weak and a number of the comments in this thread and others have been polarizing and inflammatory, but I really feel that the lack of moderation outweighs the old overmoderation. Back then, one could get comments deleted or banned simply because enough people disagreed with the post. I really think this is the better of the two options.
A'sfaninUK
I agree, but there has to be a better medium. As a user, as long as its made clear to the people who post here up front, I have no problem with people getting banned for not talking strictly about baseball, but at the same time I don’t think any baseball-related arguments or disagreements should ever result in getting banned. There needs to be some light moderation, but make any posting-related rules clear up front so everyone knows the deal.
Tim Dierkes
Light moderation is in the eye of the beholder, of course. I think we’re in a better place, letting people mostly just have their baseball discussions freely.
I have, however, removed the more offensive comments on this article. I’m also going to close the thread.

Regardless of what is said on the negative side, it can and should be countered with a higher volume of thoughtful, productive commentary.
mike156
Politics aside (which I can see is impossible) let’s not forget that baseball is big business, and business always looks to create new markets and new fans. This is the right move for MLB on a number of levels–why not encourage interest?
A'sfaninUK
Tim, Steve etc, please delete all these comments and close this section off. Ty is too good a dude to have to have all these trolls badmouthing him.
Jeff Todd
We ran the piece because we feel it is a subject worthy of thoughtful discussion. I completely agree with you that some commentary — whether it be motivated by ignorance or intentional trolling — is inappropriate. But finding a line can be difficult. Generally, I’m a strong believer in more speech rather than less … if nothing else, it tends to reveal true underlying motivations and biases.
Anyway … I will ask Tim to look closely at this thread, though I assume he has already.

Trump being the owner of the Cubs would’ve fixed all of this. The league will be gone in 10-19 years
