Nothing irks me more this time of the season when baseball announcers imply that a team has an ‘easy schedule’ or that they have a bunch of winnable games to close out the season. I like the POV on this article. Teams playing for pride are more dangerous than teams that take their schedule for granted.

I like Burke’s articles! This one’s a cool look into the psychology of the game.
The spoiler I remember was the 2006 Royals beating the Tigers to knock them from division champ to wildcard on the last day of the year. After losing 100 games they beat the 95 win Tigers twice and we’re going for the sweep… Earlier in the day the Twins beat the Chisox… then they put the Tigers and Royals up on the Jumbotron. The players were all in the dugout watching as the Royals had a big 8th inning comeback and took the Tigers to the 12th inning before winning and making the Twins the division champs. Torii Hunter even bought the Royals champagne but the league nixed that idea. Fun times.

Is Badenhop retired?

I’d be curious to know how much the inverse is true as it relates to contracts. I understand playing all the way to the end when a new contract is at stake; is the same true of players with long term guarantees? Are pride and competitiveness enough? I would imagine it depends on the player, of course, but I’d be interested to hear you thoughts on that. Keep up the good work!

Amazing piece. Thanks for the insight during this time of year. Baseball gets real exciting in September.

Every contending playoff team’s manager should read this post out loud to his team before every game the last month of the regular season, especially before they play a cellar dweller.

Badenhop was a terrible pitcher. That’s a fact. Hopefully he’ll be better at writing. Good insight though… Losing teams need inspiration and players play for $. Genius.

Badenhop was not a terrible pitcher.
Badenhop has carved out a role as a steadily productive middle reliever over the past seven seasons in the Majors. In that time, he’s averaged 58 games/66 innings per year to go along with a 3.50 ERA, 6.1 K/9, 2.6 BB/9 and a 54.4 percent ground-ball rate. Badenhop hasn’t been on the disabled list since 2009, so a club looking for some durable bullpen depth could certainly give the righty a look on a new minor league deal. Last year, Badenhop posted a 3.93 ERA in 66 1/3 innings as a member of the Reds’ bullpen.
