No need to rush Crawford or Williams. I will say though that while Galvis may be an acceptable starting shortstop NOW for the Phillies he probably won’t be the starting shortstop in the latter stages of 2017.
Guys like Desmond and Prado will have be in a lot of demand (and consequently see decent dollars) this off season. With such a weak free agent class quality veteran guys who have the flexibility to play multiple positions will indeed be a hot commodity.

Good piece. Having seen the Phils plenty this year, I really hope he shakes up the coaching staff. Base running has been horrible at times this year ( on the rare occasions we see base runners ) and it goes beyond just young player growing pains.
All in all tho’, the Phils made some positive progress this year , at least in the infield and behind the plate. Lotsa’ good young arms and McClure, at least, seems to do a nice job with them. Now about that outfield…..

Agreed, especially with Cesar Hernandez who got thrown out way too many times. The rest of the team isnt really built for running though, too many guys who 20-30 speed on the team like Rupp, Joseph, Howard, Franco, Asche, Ruiz, Blanco etc etc

Not a fan of Mackin of the coaching staff, however, the baserunning blunders are lost on the minor league instructors…not the big league staff. I just hope Galvin doesn’t get slapped with an 80-game suspension when we break camp next season.

Wow, barely anything about their pitching – which had honestly remarkable results for a lot of the year. All credit to Velasquez, Eickhoff & Hellickson and also Nola, whos ERA wasn’t great but had a 3.08 FIP. Then in the bullpen, Neris, Gomez & Ramos were all great all year.

Agreed on the pitching. Hopefully, the young arms develop into more consistent guys…they certainly had flashes and were downright good during some stretches.
The running game needs to improve as more speed is here or on the way. Crawford, Quinn, Herrera ( if he’s still here), and Hernandez can all be double digit base stealers if they can stay on first.
I had fun watchin’ the Phils this year. Definitely an improvement over the last few, which were among the least fun I’ve ever had as a fan. Bright spots, lotsa’ agility in the roster and payroll, and a thicker farm system than we’ve had in years. Gotta’ ways to go, but not a bad start for the new regime.

Here’s a an idea: trade for Mike Trout. As ridiculous as it might seem to some it might be possible. The Angels are in desperate straights with a number of pitchers suffering career threatening injuries, a large payroll, and a mostly barren farm system. They’ll soon need to pay Trout what he’ll command and still not be a contender. If we offer something like 2 or 3 young pitchers and maybe Moniak and Rupp, or Nick Willams, it’s hard to see how they wouldn’t seriously consider it. They might throw in Pujols, if they’d pay half his remaining contract and we add Joseph to the deal, and they can right their financial ship as well..
If not Trout, how about J.D. Martinez for J.P. Crawford and Cesar Hernandez or Scott Kingery, to replenish their old and expensive middle infield (Aybar and Kinsler)? The Tigers still have plenty of offense and might consider such an offer, especially if we throw in a young pitcher if necessary to sweeten the offer.
We are so stocked with good looking young players the cost will still not affect the future of the team, but jump it to the next level.

I love everything about this idea. Trout loves playing in philly (always a huge deal about him growing up local and a phils fan), trout looks great on our roster, and we could pay a kings ransom and still have plenty of financial flexibility. But no way the Angels match up with us.

the angels would ask for a lot, one of the young pitchers on the roster, willams or quinn and then im sure crawford would have to be included.

As much as I’d love to see Trout playin’ for the Phils, I just don’t know that we have the goods to get him, if he’s even being dangled out there.
I don’t think a ” pitching rich” package would come close. I would assume Crawford would head any package discussed, but I just don’t see that we have more to offer than a lotta’ other clubs after that.
Martinez would be a fun add, but I’d hope we don’t have to give up the #2 prospect in baseball for him. I dunno’… I’m horrible at trade proposals and the big names always get traded for guys I never think would be part of it.
The whole ” grow the arms, buy the bats” philosophy extends to trades too, I would hope, but I don’t think we have the names to attract a big bat with what we got. Lotsa’ decent, projectable arms , but most clubs have the same kinda’ guys in their systems.
But I sure would love to see us in a hunt for Trout if the Angels finally throw in the towel on their current roster.
