Pirates need to sign him

Even 3 years with Walker is a high risk (unless there’s a team buyout option after the first year). I think he’s looking at a 1 year deal next year to show his back is healthy over a full season…with incentives.
Getting insurance on a contract that’s more than 1 year with that surgery is costly.

I see more of a two year deal with a team option for a third. He may not even be ready for next season

Interesting how the Giants’ and the Dodgers’ offseason needs will be so similar (3B and closing). Will either of Turner or Jansen go north? One would be awful, two should be unthinkable…

God forbid!!!

We’d gladly take Jansen. While I like Turner, I think she will play a factor in the Giants straying away

I would love to see Jansen in SF – as far as 3b though I would think that they wouldn’t be interested in paying big for an infielder until at least after fall/winterball and spring happens since you have options in the system with Arroyo and others and the infield will prioritize defense>offense in general whereas span has been ineffective, pence is coming back from injury, williamson and parker are green and may or may not be the future and blanco will be gone, leaving more questions and less offense in the OF.

Richard and Hill are different because while Hill used to be a young stud who got derailed by injuries, Richard has been an innings eater without upside his whole career
cubsfan2489
Having watched Hill in his first seasons with the Cubs, let me tell ya, he was no stud. He had good stuff, but horrible control. Wouldn’t exactly say he was derailed by injuries. But good for him for figuring it all out at this point in his career. I’d say if anything, he’s been derailed lately.

But what i meant was he was a prospect when richard wasnt ever a real prospect

I believe it is highly unlikely the Mets re-sign Neil Walker. The Mets have now experienced multiple players with disk herniation issues (David Wright, Bobby Parnell, long ago Edgardo Alfonso). Alderson will take a pass on signing Walker when he has cheaper options in Wilmer Flores, Gavin Chechinni, and also Jose Reyes who could easily transition if they found a suitable 3B. Walker has been great for the Mets (when healthy) but does not offer enough to merit a long term contract.
Would love to see Cespedes back, but it won’t happen unless Mets structure his contract to add more years + dollars. I believe he is worth the risk for a long term deal. He is a great fit in NY!

I don’t understand people’s preference to Loney over Duda. Loney hits for a higher average and strikes out less, but makes a lot of soft contact and hits into more double plays. His defense is pretty awkward too, so he doesn’t have much of an advantage there. It’s like some fans still think batting average is the one and only tool to evaluate MLB hitters by.

In 2016, Richard as a starter has a 0.90 ERA, 6.9 K/9, 3 BB/9, and a .299 BABIP. His overall numbers are skewed by his use as a Loogy, 27 relief appearances with just 15.1 IP, something he has never been good at. What he does best as evidenced by his success as a starter, is eat innings. When you throw out the 2013 season where he was injured in the 1st game of the season, but continued to pitch for another 10 starts, as a Padre he has a 3.84 ERA with a .304 BABIP. He is that 3rd or 4th starter every team needs. Because of the dearth of starting pitching in this offseason’s FA market, he is going to get a 1-2 year deal for about $6-8 million. I hope Preller is smart enough to bring him back as a veteran bridge to the good young starters we have further down the farm system.
Rich Hill is guy with great skills, but no chance at pitching a full year. In 2007 he had 32 starts with 195 IP, his only full season in 12 years in the majors. Other than that season he has been either a Loogy, like 2013 when he has 63 relief appearances but just 38 IP, or injured most of the year like, well, every other season including 2016. He is going to get the big money, 3 years for $45-50 million, and not earn it.

I finally got a question answered in the mailbag 🙂
I think it comes down to floor vs ceiling…Hill, with the K’s, has a sky high ceiling, but has basically no floor because of the injuries. He’s either pitching well, or he’s hurt, it’s binary. Richard does a great job soaking innings, and between his new delivery, slight uptick in velo and little different pitch mix, seems to have become a slightly more effective version of his previous self. He of course comes with his own injury concerns, though he had one big injury, as opposed to Hill’s string of everything breaking (or blistering). For the most part, I think Richard’s peripheries are reasonable to stay about the same, though his run prevention is probably not sustainable, nor is his borderline absurd GB%. Still, 150-180 IP of 3.50 ball isn’t nothing.
I’m hoping for a 1+1 option deal, maybe for for $6 and $8mil? It’s a small overpay, but there’s no such thing as a bad one year contract, and it’s not like there is a bunch of huge contracts clogging the Padres payroll next year (though, there is a bunch of dead money). Granted the Dodgers never pay anything less than twice retail for anything, but the deal for Hill and Reddick has me excited about the thoughts of what a Richard/Jay (assuming he re-ups) could bring on the trade market next year (obviously it won’t be as strong a package, but even 2/3 of that deal would be a huge haul for the investment.

Mets sign Loney and Flores split time until Smith is ready. Duda is gone! Signing Cespedes is a must, he is a star player who can play in New York and can carry the team.

Lucas Duda will forever be denigrated by some Mets fans– and I’m obviously not saying that Lou is among them– for having the audacity to– gasp!– be human during the World Series.
