I still cringe at hearing the contract length and number of $$ that was given to Leake
ottomatic
He will bounce back
southi
Leake had the best FIP of his entire career this season but his worse era and era+. His WHIP and h/9 were both on the high side He will be a source of devisive opinions for sure. Personally I have total faith in him…faith that he is going to get hammered more times than not.
guinnesspelican
Just goes to show how poorly the birds played defense behind leake this year
johnnya
Lolll. When has he ever been any good???
teufelshunde4
Stop looking at the W-L record and ERA… Wont argue Leake was up and down at points of the season. Leake deal will be fine long term…
Cards D was simply bad… Not only statistically, but very poor at making just a basic play to end an inning when needed… How many times did the D give an extra out or two and the inning go sideways? Seemed like every other game… Heck even several games in a row it happened and they couldnt recover…
Mo should pick up Jaime’s option only to get the flexibility to make a move or two…

Really makes one wonder what the state of baseball is for small market teams. Forget keeping a talented arm long term.
tim815
The smaller the market, the greater commitment they should have to developing their own talent. Like Cleveland has taken to, recently.

Interesting article. Free agency this year ought to be wild. Over spends and bad contracts everywhere.
angelsinthetroutfield
No different than any other year in that regard
BarrelMan
At least for starting pitching, this situation implies that the trade market should be robust this winter, which is always fun. Attention desperate teams: Matt Garza can be had.
calikid13
Cardinals will likely pick up Garcia’s option and trade him for a prospect.
ExileInLA 2
And the Mets bought out Niese. Even after all their 2016 injuries, they knew not to go there!
tim815
He’ll be an interesting minor-league contract type with a few opt-out dates written into the pact. So many pitchers drop off one year, then are perfectly serviceable 24 months later..
piersall55
Sox should pick up Buchholz’s option and look to flip him in spring training to a team with injuries to starting pitching. Worst case scenario is he becomes the long man out of the bullpen in blow out games.
ccxc
They should absolutely pick up his option but I wouldn’t be so hasty to flip him for a prospect. The Sox are perilously thin on SPs until and if their hot prospects in the lower minors (Kopech, Groome, Raudes, Ball) follow through with their potential. Otherwise you have 6 guys: Price, Porcello, Rodriguez, Pomeranz, Wright and Buchholz to hold the fort before you have to slot Brian Johnson and (gulp) Henry Owens in there.
bernbabybern
This is the wrong year to be looking for starting pitching. If Otani posted (doubtful) he would get an insane contract.
GeauxRangers
No kidding. He is going to get ridiculous money anyway
Macburns
Just shows what’s wrong with pitching in modern baseball. Everyone wants six starters and eight relievers. We’re starting to see that quantity really doesn’t trump quality. If guys could learn how to get guys out at 85-90 mph again, we’d see more CG and better quality again. It’s like the shift…two years in and we’re still seeing next to no left handed hitters trying to get on base with a bunt down the third base line. We can say all day long the game has changed; eventually the total lack of quality options will make teams realize there’s value in some older strategies.
ducksnort69
It’s not my money, but spending so much on mediocre or worse seems dumb. Any AAAA guy can likely stink and eat up innings while still having that slim chance of turning in a passable season.
