Except Votto has pretty much said he’s staying here.
sigurd 2
Literally every time he has been asked about it Votto has said he will not waive his NTC and has no interest in leaving Cincy.
jd396
I doubt Votto is ever going anywhere.

Can players put into their contract that their team can’t stick a QO on them at the end of their contract? Kind of a non-monetary incentive a la opt-out clauses or no-trade clauses.
schellis 2
I think I remember a few instances of this. I want to say Cespedes first contract with the A’s had something of that nature.
Out of place Met fan
I believe that the loophole that Cespedes’ agent used has been closed
AndyM
What Cespedes has was a clause which would force his team to release him at the end of the season therefore becoming ineligible to receive a qualifying offer. I’m not aware of any patchups to that rule however.

No they can not
woodhead1986
If Votto is so damn desperate to stay on an NL team, he should consider actually trying on defense. The guy is murdering his WAR and killing the Reds defensively. He would make such a better DH. I really want to see him replace EE in Toronto.
Dookie Howser, MD
Guy isn’t desperate. He can stay on an NL team, no questions asked until he is 40 if you read the article
Kayrall
I’m not sure if it’s past him at this point in his career because of age, but he used to be regarded as a pretty solid fielder.

I can’t see any way the Jays make a run at Votto. The Jays and Reds just don’t matchup at all on a trade as the Jays lack high end quality in the upper minors and the low minor guys are just too far away to properly project them. Unless the Jays are willing to deal both Stroman and Sanchez(that would be beyond foolish) plus maybe Osuna(again foolish), it just doesn’t make sense for the Reds.
Plus, if Votto is made available, Boston would easily outbid the Jays with top tier prospects/MLB ready talent.
firstbleed
I understand the Reds asking for ‘high end’ talent but what makes you think that Votto is worth it? He is already 33 limited to 1B/DH going forward and owed a TON of money still. His OBPs is great and he is left handed but I doubt he pulls a Big Papi and lives up to that contract through 39 years of age at $25 mil per. Teams will be wary.
Doc Halladay
I never said he is(or isn’t) worth it. I was simply saying that the Jays and Reds don’t match up on a Votto trade.
bigjonliljon
This one was an easy one. They gonna suck.
schellis 2
The only way Votto is getting dealt by the Reds is if some team steps up and offers up a major prospect package with the Reds not picking up much of anything. His contract isn’t crippling the Reds. It is never the contracts of the players who are earning them that do this its the one of guys like Mesoraco who can’t get on the field without busting a hip or shoulder, or giving bench/non-leverage relievers millions
Rather give Votto 20 million a year to do Votto things, then pay four or five guys the same to be replacement level or worse role players. That is what minor league depth is for.
Cincyfan85
I hope Joey Votto is a Red for life, just like Barry Larkin. He could go down as a the best hitter in Reds history, and that’s saying a lot since we had Pete Rose. Also, I don’t think his defense is as terrible and costly as some people are making it out to be. His contract is not an albatross either. Some people talk like it’s comparable to Ryan Howard or something. Votto’s OPS is only bested by Miguel Cabrera and Mike Trout, among active players. The man is underpaid, if anything.
beauvandertulip
Shouldn’t Vottos option be 2024 not 2014 ?
PLAYTOWIN
Yes, 2024.
redsfanman
As someone who closely follows the Reds I disagree with the notion that a veteran starter is high on their list of needs, I doubt they’ll seriously pursue any on anything but minor league contracts. They currently have 4 starters all-but-assured of rotation spots in DeSclafani, Bailey, Finnegan, and Straily. Stephenson, Reed, and Garrett will all at least be in AAA, where another top pitching prospect, Sal Romano, will be joining them. Lefty John Lamb (if healthy, finally) might get another look. The Reds haven’t yet clarified that Iglesias and Lorenzen have been permanently cast as relievers, or if they’ll reconsider them for the rotation. They also have some filler candidates in Tim Adleman and Keyvius Sampson.
The Reds got Dan Straily on the waiver wire, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Reds make further waiver claims or Rule 5 picks. Especially pitchers.
The article mentions the appeal of another corner outfielder, in addition to Schebler and Duvall. OF Jesse Winker just hit .303 with a .397 OBP in AAA as a 22 year old. Winker is about to play himself out of AAA, just by hitting a few more homeruns. The Reds are closer to an outfield roster crunch than having an opening. Acquiring a new OF seems extremely unlikely, at this point. Part of the rebuild is seeing how guys like Winker and Schebler perform.
Personally I think moving Zack Cozart will be the top (only) trade priority, while acquiring inexpensive bullpen upgrades will be the sole focus in free agency.
bigpapi701
Winner will never be a major league hitter if his power does not return. 3 homers is not going to get it done in right or left. And trading Phillips is a necessity. He is a selfish player losing his ability before our eyes. He and Bailey are not worth what they are being paid. Everyone blames price but he has had the team he was hired to manage ripped out from under him.
stratcrowder
Bingo!
cguy
Shees,You nailed it redsfanman! Reds may listen to offers on Duvall or Straily, but nothing will probably happen.
sixpacktwo
I think you see things correctly.
wiggysf
Why is Brandon Phillips making 14MMMM?
sixpacktwo
Last year of a six year contract.
