Has any mutual option ever actually gotten picked up? All of the reasons one side would have to pick it up are reasons the other side would decline it.

Could be the best year ever to be a pitcher. If Volquez thinks he can do better on the open market after his most recent season, then Rich Hill might get a crazy deal. Detroit might even be able to trade Pelfrey. Maybe.

Please, I hope you’re right. A new park for Pelfrey.
Doc Halladay
If a team trades for Pelfrey, I’d almost pay to see the press conference where the GM justifies acquiring him.
GarryHarris
Detroit still needs to have that press conference.

That’s a gamble for Volquez, but there’s an interesting hedge to it. He probably figures he has only one more chance at a multiyear contract, so better this year, where he’s unlikely to get QO’d and have the depress his FA value. If he were actually offered the QO he’d probably grab it.
New Law Era
Yeah I think Volquez is in a great spot. If he doesn’t get a QO, he scores a multi-year deal. Probably less AAV, but still gets the security and stability for the next few years. Otherwise if he gets a QO, he’s got to be a lock to accept seeing as his value would nose dive having a draft pick attached to his name.

“That’s a gamble for Volquez, ”
Not really sure it’s a gamble – because hitting the market was probably his only choice. I doubt the Royals were going to pick up their half of the option either.

Volquez would be a solid pick up for the angels, After he left the pirates, he became a better pitcher.
