Dodgers could put desmond at 2 instead utley

pass on Desmond; use that money to re-sign Turner and trade for a second baseman.

Agree 100%. Dodgers need to re-sign Turner, especially since there are no other truly viable 3B options this year, and nothing too special next year. Then trade for Ian Kinsler. That will take care of two of our four needs this offseason: re-sign Turner; re-sign Jansen; trade for 2B (either Kinsler or include Villar in a Braun trade); trade for Braun or sign Cespedes.

The Dodgers don’t need to save money and a trade would cost prospects. Signing Desmond allows Dodgers to keep the prospects that would be in a deal for IE kinsler or Dozier (both would require 3 top/quality prospects) Desmond adds versatility. He can play 2b everyday and also left field, as well as center to spell Joc when needed. Signing Desmond at a reasonable dollar amount for a 20/20 RHB that crushes left handed pitching .368, which we absolutely need.

I think teams will also take into consideration Desmonds splits playing home games in hitter friendly Texas. At home he slashed: .330/.368/.497/.865 while on the road it was .241/.305/.398/.707 that is very similar to his last 2 years in Washington.
BoldyMinnesota
I’d be afraid to offer him 4, maybe even 3 years. He seems like a guy who would be alright on a short deal, but would blow up on your face on a long one.
socalbum
Desmond could very well be the 2017 Howard Kendrick, regretting that he turned down the QO.

Or the 2017 Ian Desmond?
JohnnyDodger
You’re a little late. He was exactly that in 2016. Hence the one year 8 million. He will 1000000% get a multi year deal. And have that offer from multiple teams
RedBirdsSwaff
I would like the Cardinals to at least kick the tires. I think he could be good for anywhere up the middle. I know MO won’t overpay anyone, so if the Cards did sign him it would be to a deal that I could stomach.

Forgot about the Q.O.. idk if I would want to part with that draft pick, but we gotta do something to stay with them Cubbies

You’ll drive yourself crazy trying to catch the Cubs. The goal should be to put a 90+ win team on the field and not pay any attention to what the Cubs are doing. Continue to let the farm system grow and keep s competitive team on the field.
I think trying to catch the Cubs this off-season, would put the Cardinals in a really bad spot in a couple years.

I don’t know about “overpay” but it’s not like STL has been Oakland or Tampa when it comes to signing players. The Birds were in the bidding for Heyward all the way (and way lucky they didn’t win that). They went after Price last year. They did sign Leake for pretty big dollars. Didn’t probably work the way they wanted the first year but it could still pan out, especially if they can improve that defense. Maybe Desmond would be a better SS than Diaz defensively.

I feel like the dude is always in the lineup. I don’t know why he takes so much criticism. A lot harder putting up above average numbers when you are out there everyday. If I’m a gm, which none of us are, my eyes would light up to a guy who can play anywhere in outfield, ss/3b/2b, 20 stolen bases, 20 homeruns and 100 runs. Super athletic and a great clubhouse guy. Wish my Yankees would go after him. Been saying that though since he first became free agent
Outlaws12
Would love the Cards to pick him up but Matheny would go nuts and play him everywhere.
J. BOO
The QO is the beater… I like him for the Astros, if they can manage picking up a major piece like E.E or Cespedes. The potential contract for yrs./money seem to fall close enough in line with what Luhnow’s plans but not when the 16th pick is added, to the Rangers no less.
Ironically Optimistic Padres Fan
Hope he stays in Texas. Wish the Padres could have him, but we need to rebuild.
