As a Twins fan, it’s nice to read this. I agree that 2018 could be promising. I like the hiring of Falvey and Levine and am excited to see what they do!

Could one solid defensive catcher like Castro possibly transform an entire pitching staff? That has to be one reason virtually every pitcher failed so badly in 2016.
twins33
Castro is 2-3 times better defensively than Suzuki and Centeno…so it definitely would help significantly. I don’t think it would be a magic pill though. They still need better SP.

There’s all kinds of suck on the Twins pitching staff and that has to change… but it sure wouldn’t hurt having a decent catcher. And better D overall. Twins D has been atrocious.
twins33
Agreed. I just don’t think the Twins rotation will stop being terrible due to a better catcher. Better, likely, but still terrible. They just aren’t that talented of a group.
I want the Twins to sign him but think he’ll have better opportunities (contending) from elsewhere.
jd396
The Twins don’t have talented pitchers and frankly have only had a few glimmers of legitimate pitching talent come through the organization in the past 25 years, for F’s sake.
EVERYTHING the Twins org thinks it knows about pitching is utter garbage. The entire organization might not need to be knocked down and rebuilt from the ground up, but the pitching portion of the org needs it, badly.

Nowhere to go but up, right?
jd396
Sideways?
jd396
Pitching needs to improve and defense needs to improve. This year the team’s DRS was the third worst in the majors and their K/9 rate was the fourth worst in the majors. Going back to 2011 the Twins have the fifth worst team DRS and the worst K/9 rate.
Bad combo.
When your fielders can’t catch AND your pitchers can’t strike guys out, well, you’re going to suck.
trolofson
Twins staff is atrocious and has 0 swing and miss guys…all pitch for contact, usually of the hard variety.
Unfortunately all are also signed for substantial money and length. Have to try and move them.
jd396
In the substantial money and length regard it’s down to Santana and Hughes at least.
