They’ll sign him only to trade him if he come sback and is anything near the player he was before the injury.
luthy27
They could keep him if they like him. Hard to get good catchers. Rays have had terrible ones forever
pgmitchell
has to be a 2 year deal
luthy27
He wants 3-4 but rays offer is at 2 rn
JDSchneck
Rays shouldn’t sign Ramos. Why give up a first round pick for a guy who’ll miss most of the year with no guarantee of returning to qualifying offer form?
Phillies2017
No pick attached
pgmitchell
they have a protected pick!
luthy27
New CBA and he was not offered qualifying offer 2 year deal would be great. .306 22hrs and he could DH
morebreakdowns
new CBA doesnt matter this offseason when it comes to the QO #realbaseballfan
siliconmessiah
You can belittle others but if you’re going to express your superior baseball intellect you leave yourself open to have it pointed out that he was not given a qualifying offer so it didn’t matter regardless. Nice try, though.
morebreakdowns
Why would I argue that point when he knew he didn’t have QO himself. Nice try,,,,,,, though. Lets not argue though, it gets lonely up here on our high horses
smelliott00
1) Rays have a top 10 protected pick, so they would give up a 2nd round pick for an elite catcher.
2) Because of his ACL injury, Ramos was not issued a qualifying offer.
halos101
i don’t think he got a QO. and theirs is protected anyways

Yea I can tell you know what your talking about

At two years, i dont see why the nats wouldnt be in to resign him.
Plus, the rays cant be offering some crazy dollar amount either, right?
Valkyrie
And you know this how, exactly?
Connorsoxfan
Because he’s a catcher with only a decent track record, one really good large portion of a season, coming off a torn ACL. That doesn’t scream 3/35 money.
natsgm
common sense. And oh look, i was right.

Good luck Ramos. Hope to see you fully healthy and performing again. One of my favorite Nats.
blovy8
Tough for him to go to a turf field, he’s gonna end up walking to first on grounders.
Ungerdog
there’s no turf between the bases at The Trop.
Connorsoxfan
But the Trop is an unfortunate excuse of a baseball stadium anyway, so there’s that. No baseball game should need to include a rule for what happens when a ball hits the catwalk. That just shouldn’t happen…
railfan1948
The Trop is a wonderful place for fans. Fenway Park, while revered by many, is a stinking hole of a stadium.
kimball0401
Look at the rays starting to spend money I like it
tsmizzzle
Good for him. Best of luck Buffalo!
Yankees1991
Nice to see the Rays make a splash. Wilson Ramos is a premier defender and above average bat. Not many like him around. Hopefully he returns from injury with no issues or restrictions. AL East just getting tougher and tougher.
kimball0401
The rays had to know about his knee when they got into this I’m sure there won’t be an issue
realgone2
. I hope the Braves do not throw money at Wieters…………
bobbyvwannabe
Ramos would of looked nice in the bottom half of the Mets batting order, especially at that price tag.
tbj777
How the Rays should shake up so far (IMO)
LINEUP
1. Kiermaier (CF)
2. Forsythe (2b)
3. Longoria (3b)
4. Miller (1b)
5. Ramos (C)
6. Dickerson (LF vs. RHP, DH vs. LHP)
7. Duffy (SS)
8. Souza Jr. (RF)
9. Franklin (DH vs. RHP), Mahtook (LF vs. LHP)
patborders92
Still such a bad offensive team
kiermaier
wooo
MatthewBaltimore23
He ultimately signed for 2/12.5 with incentives that make it worth up to 18.25M. That isn’t that much, where was every other team(O’s,Nats,Braves)?
RunDMC
Wow! I know he had a late injury, but I am really surprised he went for that. I would have thought that ATL would have been in him at that price, unless they really had questions about his health. But, it’s only a 2 year deal.
stymeedone
Its not his first major knee injury, and there are questions about his ability to stay at C. Plus he will miss at least the first half of 2017. Rays have guaranteed at least $12MM for a season and a half, not knowing if he will be at DH or C. Not many teams could take that risk.
stryk3istrukuout
Hard not to root for a team such as the Rays…this is, what…their one “big” signing per decade? It was suggested they could sign Bautista to a one year deal earlier in the off-season; that would be incredibly interesting. They could even trade him at the deadline to a contender if they wanted and probably get a decent return, along with if they trade Archer. Otherwise, it’s a pretty sneaky good team who could even contend.
ducksnort69
His knees are made of tissue paper. They were dumb to not offer Castro a similar offer he got from the Twins. I hope Ramos comes back strong and can catch, but I also hope for world peace and the end of poverty…
kc38
Castro hit .220. Ramos hit .307. What the hell are you talking about dude
DT.J.B.
Castro is a far superior catcher with out two knee surgery. But it’s a good price fit for a solid DH. I’m thinking a lesser version of V-Mart.
patborders92
I’m 33 y.o. and have had two knee surgeries (both ACLs) and my knees are stronger than ever
natsgm
12 million over two years. So angry. Thats a drop in the bucket for the Nats. If it doesnt work out you lost nothing. Catching will once again be a black hole in Nats lineup.
DT.J.B.
Nats are losing out on all fronts. So much vigor on the boards from Nats fans, I think it’s very funny.
natsgm
good for you
bobtillman
It’s a good move no matter what. There’s injury concerns, and the defense may be a bit shy of average. But he’s a heck of a lot better than Luke Malle and Curt Cassilli (WHO???????????).
And fairly cheap. Could be traded next winter. Pretty smart deal when you think of it.
Valkyrie
That’s ok, bob. He doesn’t know who you are either. But then there isn’t a Stock Boy at WalMart Trade Rumors page.
dfab86
why the heck weren’t the Mets in on him? A 2 year deal for a MAXIMUM of 18.25m? Just over 9m/year? Come on Mets….
kc38
Dh I’m sure played a big factor so he could be playing while not having to catch. Can save himself a little too to make more money down the road. Great signing by the Rays on a cheap deal but I’m sure team vibe and dh had lots to do with it.
dfab86
I get the DH part but I still think he could have caught 130 games. I would also assume if he was signing a “pillow contract” why would he agree to 2 years and not just 1?
kc38
Because he’s gonna use this year to take his time get healthy completely then come back dh a little and get his feet set with the league then next year hopefully return to full form and have a whole year to rake and then cash in
hojostache
Typical Mets ownership being cheap. I am hoping Travis bounces back, but Ramos @ <10m/yr is a steal. Good job by TB…I hope he plays well for them.
chesteraarthur
Hmm, where was….every team on this? 6-9 per is like 4th of money
markmc1235
Thats cheap. Good signing by the rays. Surprised his price dropped so much
ivanivan
How in the blue hell did small market Rays beat other teams to this? Only 2 yrs for 9 mil each (and only if mostly injury free) for a catcher that’s coming off a .850 OPS season? Coming off injury or not, how did no contending teams get in on a contract with such minimal risk?
RaysFan2021
Good job Rays
jd396
Basically a one-year pillow deal aiming at the 18/19 offseason. Good deal for both sides me thinks.
bradthebluefish
Too short of a contract IMO because he will likely be a great catcher again once he properly rehabs but by then the Rays will be 1/4 of the way through his contract.
