They announce a signing that was official almost 2 weeks ago. Lol
jimbenwal
It was not official 2 weeks ago because he had not passed a physical. Once he passed his physical and they released Goody there was enough room on the 40 man roster to add him. Had he failed his physical the contract would never gone into effect. But thanks for trying to make them sound like the morons.

That hilarious!

Great reply.

Brian Cashman’s greatest series of deals as Yankee GM?
takeyourbase
Sounds like a low risk guy for someone like Minnesota. The return can’t be too lofty if he’s DFA.

$20 says the Angels claim Goody.

Goody’s completely dominated in the minors the past 2 seasons: AA/AAA 85.2 IP 1.68 ERA 12.5 K/9 but his major league numbers are more telling. His slider is a big breaking slow pitch but he doesn’t have any movement or velocity to play off of it with his fastball. Don’t swing at the slider, Crush his fastball. Major league hitters can handle that. He strikes out a ton because at two strikes he’s a beast but he’s not going to make it IMHO.
Every pitcher pitches better with strikes but look at this:
Zero strikes against Goody: OPS 1.329
Two strike against Goody: OPS .682
He also can’t get lefties out with that big slider. Major league lefties have hit .365 .404 .635 1.038 in 58 plate appearances ’15+’16

Yes! They got Chapman!

Cashman has been stockpiling pitchers for the past year, they now have the most young big arms in the game, throwing around 100mph. With Chapman, Betances, Clippard, Warren, they are rated as a top bullpen in the league. They have Holder and Heller who also are close and could help them next year. Add to that one of the starters like Severino or Mitchell They still might need a lefty in the pen like Logan.

Warren may be battling for a rotation spot.

Boone Logan gets so much love, I have no idea why. You also left off Tommy Layne as a bullpen arm. The contrast between the two is pretty extreme… in favor of Layne. Layne is also not going to cost much and has years of control left.
Bleier is also a very interesting LOOGY to me. If you look at his sinker/slider combo from the left side it looks a whole lot like an older CC Sabathia (both around 89mph too). CC’s had his troubles against righties but in recent years has completely dominated left handed bats.
Either way, LOOGY is a strength already with Layne and Bleier. Boone Logan can take eight figures from somebody else’s payroll.

Jimbenwal that’s awesome that comment lol

I agree

Remember Dexter Fowler to the Orioles last year. It was reported everywhere, including right here, that he had agreed with the Orioles 2/23, then jumped back to the Cubs 2/25. Nothing is official until pen meets paper.

Agreed

probably wouldn’t have made a difference as they’d still need the roster spot but why not DFA Goody BEFORE the rule V draft and protect Luis Torrens instead? I’m guessing they didn’t want 4 catchers on the 40 (Sanchez, Romine, Higashioka and Torrens) and also hindsight wise maybe they didn’t think another team would take Torrens and commit to having a 21 year old catcher on their major league club for the entire 2017 season who’s only hit .250 in A ball with no baserunning speed or power but I think we could’ve gotten something more than a $100,000 rule V draft payment if we had traded him (and/or Goody) instead.

My guess (without much Yankees system knowledge) is that thry didn’t want Torrens taking a 40 Man spot for 28 months before being MLB ready.
mosc
So this was very possible… but wouldn’t help. Torrens is not “gone”, he’s just rule-5 selected. Most rule-5 selections are returned, especially position players. Jake Cave was an early Rule-5 draft selection in 2015 for example and was returned before opening day.
If you DFA’d Goody and added Torrens to protect him from then Rule-5 draft, you would then have to DFA Torrens when you wanted to sign Chapman. That is your argument right? Torrens was gone anyway? What happens now is that Torrens is claimed on waivers. He is now the property of another team. They can try to pass him through waivers themselves (like the yankees successfully just did with Lane Adams last year) or option him, he does get 3, and keep him in the minors at the cost of a 40-man roster spot. Torrens is not coming back in this scenario.
The Rule-5 requires that he stay on the 25-man roster, not just the 40-man roster, or else he is returned to the Yankees. That makes it much more likely that they get him back.
