I’m not sure if it goes without saying or what effect it may have on his earnings, but Cole also battled injuries throughout the year. Can’t say that there is much doubt to his abilities especially as a pretty clear step above the other three guys mentioned.

Being hurt surely will not help Cole’s case, and the fact that he throws 100 won’t either.

Well, yeah, but in another context he’s a superior talent and pitcher in regards to his comps, apart from Arrieta. Former #1 overall pick who put up Cy Young Award numbers in 2015. I think Taillon’s emergence hurts him more than the details surrounding his case. Before, Cole was the bona fide ace. Now, the Pirates can rationalize that they wouldn’t need Cole at a hefty price with Taillon around. Obviously, this is more of a point towards when Cole actually hits free agency, though. In the interim, I almost think the Pirates pay him just to keep him happy given that he’s expressed discontent over making the league minimum.

Cole and Shelby Miller’s aggregate stats for first time arb eligibility are scary similar.

I miss Dontrelle Willis.

Agree and Orlando Hernandez

I miss Orlando Hernandez!
True warrior for the Yankees… Amazing story in general!

Amazing how salary inflation only seems to occur for baseball players, investment bankers and CEOs.

Cole is being underrated in this. I can see him pulling close to the 4.35 million in the arbitration process. There was talks a few years ago about CY with Kershaw. I believe Cole was top 5 in voting in that year. Outside of last year, he has top starter status on any team. This guy is seriously a Ace and capable of dominating hitters. Plus he had AJ Burnett monitoring him for 2 years and giving him tips on how to be effective. Cole is definitely a work horse

I mostly agree. The only thing against him is the injuries he faced last year and the emergence of Jameson Taillon. The Pirates could theoretically say that Cole is now an injury risk and was outpitched by a rookie.

Hard to believe that Willis’ salary still exerts such a psychological hurdle over a decade later.
