Anthony Reyes Rumors
By Steve Adams [July 27, 2008 at 8:57pm CST]
This one will be a bit lengthy, which can be expected as the deadline approaches. Here's a review of some of the major moves and rumors of the last week: The Yankees acquired Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte from the Pirates for OF Jose Tabata, RHP Ross Ohlendorf, RHP Dan McCutchen and RHP Jeff Karstens . I agree with Tim that Ian Kennedy would've been a better centerpiece, but Tabata is pretty highly-touted himself. Kennedy would have made a more immediate impact, while Tabata is only 19 years old. The Dodgers acquired Casey Blake for minor league RHP Jon Meloan...

The Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that the Indians have acquired Anthony Reyes from the Cardinals for a minor leaguer. Reyes who worked out of the bullpen earlier this year for the Cardinals, was most recently in triple-A, where he made 11 starts, going 2-3 with a 3.25 ERA. The Cardinals received Luis Perdoma, a relief pitcher, who has split the year between single-A and double-A. At Akron, Perdoma was 2-0 with a 3.52 ERA with one save. Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has the latest Pirates hot stove chatter. The Pirates are not opposed to creating a hole at shortstop for the rest of the year by trading Jack Wilson. They would just need the right return. Teams are still calling on Wilson, with the Dodgers confirmed and the Tigers possible. A Jason Bay deal seems less likely - the Pirates' price is high for their star. Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte continue to draw interest, with John Grabow in the mix as well. Nady or Marte would require two prospects each. Nady's suitors are the...

A few notes from the MLBiverse... Anthony Reyes, who has been the object of much trade speculation, made his first start at AAA on Friday night. Reyes pitched 3+ scoreless innings with a strict pitch-count. The Cardinals appear to be reconverting Reyes into a starter in the hopes of increasing his value for potential trade partners. Jim Bowden hinted that he may implement a full-fledged youth movement in the near future, noting that a number of top prospects are close to being ready. Specifically, he mentioned two outfielders which would likely mean that Bowden will seek to move Austin Kearns...

A few Odds & Ends with a San Diego focus: Tom Krasovic of the Union Tribune notes that the Padres are close to completing a trade for a reliever with "good stuff" according to Kevin Towers. It does not say who it is, but it should be someone better than LHPs Joe Thatcher, who would be sent down, and Glendon Rusch, who was just outrighted yesterday. Rusch has 3 days to accept his assignment. He most likely will as he signed a minor league deal after missing all of '07. Stay tuned to see who the Padres acquire. Any guesses?...

FRIDAY: Rockies owner Dick Monfort says the Rockies aren't looking to acquire a starter at this time. As of yesterday Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald said the Rox remained interested in Tavarez but that no advancements had been made. THURSDAY: On Tuesday we found out that the Rockies have been looking into a number of trade options for their starting rotation. The two most common names in the conversation are Josh Fogg and Julian Tavarez, both former Rox. Fogg has given up over a run an inning for the last place Reds, and could be DFA if the team...

Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch suggests that Anthony Reyes' demotion to the Triple A rotation increases his trade value. Interested teams view him as a starter, and want to see him in that role before acquiring him. Last week, ESPN's Jayson Stark heard rumblings that the Cards want "an upper echelon prospect back, plus another piece." Reyes, 26, has shown flashes of brilliance but has a 5.41 career ERA in 219.2 innings. He just seems fixable, is all.

Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch mentioned in a Wednesday chat that the Braves are scouting the Cardinals heavily and the Angels have also been watching recently. One rumor that's been floating about consistently is that the Cardinals are willing to trade pitcher Anthony Reyes. Yesterday Jayson Stark relayed that John Mozeliak wants "an upper echelon prospect back, plus another piece."

ESPN's Jayson Stark has been working the phones, and the result is his latest Rumblings and Grumblings column. Stark talked to an official from a "pitching-starved" team. This person said the Giants would have to eat at least $80MM of Barry Zito's remaining $112.5MM if they want to trade him. One scout suggested Zito's only chance at revival is a reunion with Rick Peterson. The Cards' Anthony Reyes is "eminently available." Problem is, John Mozeliak has a high asking price for the 26 year-old hurler. Edwin Jackson remains a hot commodity, but there's no reason for the Rays to move...

According to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, scouts from at least ten teams observed Anthony Reyes' fine start against Washington yesterday. He says the Cards have made Reyes' availability known. Reyes, 26, already has 250 Triple A innings and 200 big league innings under his belt. Despite an awful ERA and record last year for the Cards, his strikeout and walk rates weren't too bad. Everyone seems to believe there's something more here, but the potential won't be realized in St. Louis. He's not getting much encouragement from the Cardinals right now. Teams that have shown interest in...

The Cardinals message boards are lighting up, and with good reason: there is a legitimate Dontrelle Willis rumor making the rounds. The thread was started by a respected Cards source who goes by the handle Hawg Wild. I can confirm that this guy has a track record of success. Colby Rasmus is a 19 year-old outfielder in high Class A. He was a first-round pick and is easily the team's best prospect now that Anthony Reyes is in the bigs. According to Rasmus's father: "Colby just called me and said his agent told him of conversations the cardinals were having..

I haven't addressed the Cardinal outfield situation since March 5th. Since then, many things have changed: Kevin Mench is hitting .300/.328/.591 with 9 home runs. He's been driving in a lot of runs as the Rangers' sixth place hitter. What's more, Jason Marquis has stunk it up (6.00 ERA) and John Koronka came out of nowhere to toss four quality starts in seven tries. Can't see any kind of Mench for Marquis swap now. Also, Jim Edmonds is hitting .240/.333/.417, and Will Carroll thinks he may have to shut it down for a while to get completely right again. Toss..

The fine Cardinals blog Viva El Birdos pieces together the latest info about hotshot pitching prospect Anthony Reyes. Sidney Ponson has won the fifth starter competition, and Reyes will be optioned to Memphis soon. Furthermore, Larry gets the impression that the organization is not committed to Reyes and is priming things for a trade. Even with a less than stellar spring, Reyes's stock is high coming off a 3.64 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in Triple A last year. He's a 24 year-old Major League-ready starting pitcher with #2 starter potential within a year or two. How many of those are..

Believe it or not, there's a ton of stuff going on today that doesn't involve the words "Prior" or "Tejada." A tentative Troy Glaus trade has been reached. The Diamondbacks dumped Glaus and his contract on the Blue Jays for Orlando Hudson and Miguel Batista. Brandon Webb, far and away the most extreme groundball pitcher in baseball, benefits greatly from the addition of Hudson. Another effect is the breakup of a highly rated defensive infield, at least in the eyes of Dayn Perry. The Blue Jays now have a logjam of 1B/3B/DH guys, and Rosenthal speculates that Shea Hillenbrand is..
