Arthur Rhodes Rumors

Reds Rumors: Gonzalez, Reyes, Beimel

Let's gather up the latest on the Reds. John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer figures the Reds would like to add a young shortstop. Alex Gonzalez was supposed to play winter ball but the plan changed. The Reds still hope he's ready for spring training. Kerry Wood is not likely, but the Reds have an offer out to Arthur Rhodes and maintain interest in David Weathers after offering him arbitration. MLB.com's Mark Sheldon throws a few new lefties into the mix: Dennys Reyes and Joe Beimel. Darren Oliver is not under consideration since he'd cost the Reds their second-round pick....   Continue Reading

Reds Make Offer To Rhodes

According to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon, the Reds made an offer to free agent lefty reliever Arthur Rhodes. Rhodes currently has multiple offers on the table, according to his agent. Since Rhodes is 39, I'm guessing the proposals are for one year. The Cardinals made an offer to Rhodes last month, and the Tigers seem interested.   Continue Reading

Marlins Decline To Offer Arb To Rhodes, Gonzalez, Lo Duca

According to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro, the Marlins declined to offer arbitration to Type B free agents Arthur Rhodes, Luis Gonzalez, and Paul Lo Duca. Rhodes might've been worth the risk, but the Marlins will play it safe.   Continue Reading

Cards Make Offer To Rhodes

According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals made an offer to lefty reliever Arthur Rhodes. Rhodes' agent says nine teams expressed interest, and a handful made offers. More offers are forthcoming for the 39 year-old. Cardinals GM John Mozeliak continues to hammer out the details of a contract with Trever Miller; he hopes to add two lefties to the pen. Goold says the Cardinals are also considering two righthanded relievers in Brandon Lyon and Jason Isringhausen. Three other teams have expressed interest in Isringhausen, who would like to regain his job as the Cardinals' closer. The...   Continue Reading

Reds Hope To Add Lefty Reliever

According to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon, Reds GM Walt Jocketty wants to add a lefty to the Reds bullpen. Jocketty says the Reds considered Trever Miller before it became apparent that he was close to a deal with the Cardinals. To build the bullpen back up, Jocketty said the Reds would consider Arthur Rhodes, Will Ohman, Darren Oliver, Dennys Reyes and Joe Beimel. Cincinnati could use a reliever since ex-Red Jeremy Affeldt signed with the Giants earlier in the week. The Reds have talked about bringing back two of their own free agents, David Weathers and Mike Lincoln. Teams are more...   Continue Reading

Tigers Interested In Beimel

Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press reports that the Tigers are interested in LHP Joe Beimel, according to Beimel's agent. Biemel, 31, posted a 2.02 ERA for the Dodgers in 2008. He's only allowed one home run over the past two seasons, while pitching a combined 116.1 innings. However, he did give up 50 hits in 49 innings last year. Morosi mentions that the Tigers are also in the hunt for a closer, making it clear that Beimel isn't the answer for the 9th inning in Detroit. Darren Oliver and Arthur Rhodes also appear on the Tigers' short...   Continue Reading

Cards Focused On Ohman, Rhodes

The Cardinals want to sign a lefty reliever or two, but Scott Eyre, Damaso Marte, and Jeremy Affeldt went off the board quickly. GM John Mozeliak expects the rest of the southpaw relievers to follow suit, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Derrick Goold says the Cardinals have targeted Will Ohman and Arthur Rhodes, though no offer has been made to Ohman. The Cardinals have apparently made offers to others though. If those options fall through, the Cardinals can turn to free agents Joe Beimel, Trever Miller, Darren Oliver, Dennys Reyes, Alan Embree, Eddie Guardado, or Brian Shouse. Scott Schoeneweis,...   Continue Reading

Odds & Ends: Kawakami, Renteria, Johnson, Ohman

A number of Odds & Ends for your weekend update: From Japanball.com, Kenshin Kawakami is filing for free agency. Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports the Cubs are considering Randy Johnson for a one year deal. The 45 year old lefty is a career 13-0 against the Cubs, 4-0 at Wrigley, and needs 5 wins to reach 300. The Cardinals are moving in on free agent Will Ohman, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, and are reportedly interested in Jeremy Affeldt and Arthur Rhodes. In the same article, Goold suggests the Cards will stall on...   Continue Reading

Tigers Interested In Darren Oliver

Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press talked to Darren Oliver's agent, who said the Tigers and Angels are two of four teams interested in his client. Morosi says the Tigers have also contacted the agents for Trevor Hoffman, Brandon Lyon, David Weathers, and Arthur Rhodes while also expressing interest in Florida's Kevin Gregg. Oliver, 38, posted a 2.88 ERA in 72 innings. His strikeout rate wasn't great, but he limited walks and home runs. He earned $2MM this year. As a Type A free agent, Oliver comes with the added tax of Detroit's second-round pick in the June...   Continue Reading

Marlins Rumors: Max Ramirez, Pavano, Rhodes

Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald has the latest on the Marlins. The Marlins have had informal talks with the Rangers regarding catcher Max Ramirez. The Fish are willing to trade lefty Scott Olsen, though the Rangers are wary of his makeup and home run tendencies. The Marlins are OK with their in-house options if they can't work out a trade. The Marlins aren't interested in Gerald Laird. The Marlins may consider bringing Carl Pavano back to Florida, the site of his last success. Luis Gonzalez, Mark Hendrickson, Paul Lo Duca, and Arthur Rhodes are the Marlins' free agents. Of...   Continue Reading

Week in Review: 7/27 - 8/2

We saw the non-waiver trade deadline come and go this week, and plenty of action to go along with it. Let's recap the big moves of the week: The Dodgers, Pirates, and Red Sox completed a three-team, blockbuster trade that sent Manny Ramirez to Los Angeles, Jason Bay to Boston, and Andy LaRoche, Bryan Morris, Craig Hansen, and Brandon Moss to Pittsburgh. The Pirates got a pretty nice haul, and while Bay won't necessarily replace Manny's production, he's much more affordable, signed through '09, and doesn't disrupt the clubhouse. The Dodgers add the big bat they need for a push...   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Royals, Rockies, Rhodes, Braves

Let's round up some remaining links in this lazy Saturday afternoon: The Royals DFA'd Yasuhiko Yabuta. The White Sox had tried to sign the Japanese reliever last winter but were unsuccessful. Yabuta was 1-3 with a 5.46 ERA and had signed a two-year, $6MM deal with Kansas City. The Rockies tried desperately to acquire a fifth starter before the non-waiver deadline but couldn't match-up with the Mariners for Jarrod Washburn or the Nationals for Tim Redding; and Paul Byrd had Colorado on his no-trade list. The Rockies will continue to look for a starter via waiver wire claims. Arthur Rhodes...   Continue Reading

Lefty Relievers: Ohman, Grabow, Eyre, Mahay

2:50pm: Stark says Ohman's probably staying put despite interest from ten teams. 2:39pm: Buster Olney says the Phillies will probably come up empty on a lefty reliever. 2:02pm: Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald says the Braves asked for a pitching prospect for Ohman, and the Red Sox passed. Mahay remains a possibility. 1:07pm: MLB.com's Mark Bowman says the Braves could keep Ohman. So far they're not finding offers superior to the supplemental draft pick they could get after the season. THURSDAY, 12:24pm: Jayson Stark has the Yanks and Red Sox battling for Eyre. WEDNESDAY, 11:50pm: Let's talk lefty relievers....   Continue Reading

Arthur Rhodes Traded To Marlins

1:41pm: MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo takes a look at Hernandez. 9:46am: According to ESPN's Peter Gammons, the Marlins have acquired lefty reliever Arthur Rhodes for 22 year-old righty Gaby Hernandez. The Fish acquired Hernandez in '05 for Paul Lo Duca. Hernandez is a solid return for Rhodes, even if he struggled in a Triple A stint this year. He spent some time on the DL this year with a left intercostal strain. Rhodes, 38, has a 2.86 ERA in 22 innings this year after missing '07 due to Tommy John surgery.   Continue Reading

Graziano's Latest: Schoeneweis, Rhodes, Pavano

Here's a look at the fresh rumors from Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger. The Yankees, Tigers, Rangers, and Rays have talked to the Mets about Scott Schoeneweis. The Mets might prefer to acquire a replacement if they move Schoeneweis. Arthur Rhodes is one possibility if he doesn't end up in Florida. Geoff Baker believes it's down to the Marlins and Brewers for Rhodes, with the other getting Eddie Guardado. The Yanks might have to acquire a reliever now that they've dealt Kyle Farnsworth. Rhodes isn't on their radar though. The Ivan Rodriguez trade could kick off other trades for...   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest: Ibanez, Washburn, Redding, Rhodes

Some additional notes from ESPN's Jayson Stark: The Mariners still want Jon Niese and another prospect for Raul Ibanez; the Mets are not biting. Similar situation with the Ms asking the Cubs for Felix Pie and another player. The Mets aren't in on Jarrod Washburn or Tim Redding. The Marlins are making it clear that there is no done deal for Arthur Rhodes. Clark Spencer had written the Fish "could be closer" to a deal for Rhodes than a catcher. Stark says the Mariners are driving a hard bargain for Rhodes, with the Red Sox, Marlins, Phillies, Brewers, Tigers, Mets,...   Continue Reading

Rhodes To The Marlins?

2:44pm: ESPN's Jerry Crasnick also heard the Marlins were eyeing Jeremy Affeldt and David Weathers of the Reds. 12:47pm: Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald is reporting that the Marlins could be close to landing Arthur Rhodes from the Mariners. The Marlins could be closer to a deal to acquire left-handed reliever Arthur Rhodes from the Seattle Mariners, who are looking only for a midlevel minor-league prospect in return. Rhodes, 37, is 2-0 with a 3.83 ERA in 35 relief appearances this season. Yesterday we heard that the Marlins were targeting several left-handed relievers and it looks like they have...   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest: Aurilia, Fuentes, Orlando Cabrera

New collection of rumors from ESPN's Jayson Stark... The Twins have asked the Giants about Rich Aurilia. They've been dangling Boof Bonser for a position player; would they trade him back to San Francisco for Aurilia? On the Phillies' radar: John Grabow, Will Ohman, Arthur Rhodes, and Jack Taschner. A Brian Fuentes trade remains doubtful. The White Sox will trade Orlando Cabrera for the right pitcher. The Sox aren't generating much interest in their prospects.   Continue Reading

Graziano's Latest: Dunn, Putz, Laird

Time to check in with Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger. Graziano calls Adam Dunn "the man without a rumor." Even with his flaws this one is hard to figure out. [UPDATE: SI.com's Jon Heyman is finally hearing a couple of teams are in on Dunn.] John Maine's rotator cuff strain has the Mets looking at pitching. Graziano suggests names like Livan Hernandez, Paul Byrd, and Jarrod Washburn. The Mets have talked to the Tigers about Scott Schoeneweis. They'd have to replace him, maybe with Arthur Rhodes or Eddie Guardado. The Mariners will listen on J.J. Putz, but he won't...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Rhodes, Happ, Manny

Let's round up some links and rumors. The Brewers scouted Arthur Rhodes last night, according to Jon Heyman. About a "half-dozen" Braves are subject of trade talks, according to GM Frank Wren. Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein notes that Brandon Wood's stock is rising in case the Angels want to use him as a trade chip. Phillies prospect J.A. Happ wasn't necessarily pulled from his start last weekend because of a big league promotion. Phillies assistant GM Mike Arbuckle admitted that a trade is another option. [UPDATE: Happ has indeed been recalled to the Majors, though.] Tom Verducci of SI.com believes...   Continue Reading

Marlins Looking For Catcher, Reliever

The NL East is a three-team race, with the Mets, Phillies, and Marlins all within a game of each other. Who'd have thought the Marlins would be contending after trading Miguel Cabrera? According to Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Marlins have intensified their search for a catcher. The targets: Bengie Molina, Ramon Hernandez, Gerald Laird, and Ryan Doumit. Molina and Hernandez are the pricey options. Doumit would be especially tough to pry loose; he has a .937 OPS this year as a 27 year-old. MLB.com's Joe Frisaro wonders if Miguel Olivo, Gregg Zaun, and Paul Lo Duca...   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest: Ohman, Rhodes

ESPN's Jayson Stark has some new rumor material. Braves lefty Will Ohman is drawing plenty of interest, with the Tigers, Rays, Yankees, and Cardinals named as suitors. Perhaps the Yanks' interest will diminish now that they have Damaso Marte. The Marlins and other clubs may turn to Arthur Rhodes as a more reasonable Plan B if they aren't able to pry George Sherrill or Brian Fuentes loose. Given the emergence of Jeff Samardzija as a power bullpen arm, the Cubs are no longer looking for pitching. They desire a left-handed hitting center fielder, but that might wait until the offseason....   Continue Reading

Perrotto's Latest: Ross, Jacobs, Kent, Burnett

Baseball Prospectus' John Perrotto has a new column. The Mets are looking at relievers Huston Street, Brian Fuentes, Arthur Rhodes, and Eddie Guardado. On the radar for outfielders: Jason Bay, Raul Ibanez, and Randy Winn. A new suitor for Fuentes has emerged: the Diamondbacks. Would they really make another move for a reliever? Other known suitors were named here. The Marlins would consider trading Cody Ross or Mike Jacobs for relief help. New name on the Rays' radar: Dodgers second baseman Jeff Kent. They're better off with Akinori Iwamura aren't they? George Sherrill suitors: Cardinals, Tigers, Dodgers, Marlins, and Phillies....   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Gammons, Stark, Giles, Royals

And still more minor notes from around the MLBiverse... First from Peter Gammons: Gammons says that the Marlins will not part with Anibal Sanchez for Brian Fuentes and will instead go after Arthur Rhodes. The Cardinals now appear to be the favorite for Fuentes. No teams seem willing to pay the asking price for Jason Bay. The Indians will pay the remainder of Casey Blake's $2MM salary. Next from Jayson Stark: The Mets are also showing interest in Randy Winn, but one official from another club feels Winn is just a backup plan. A couple of random notes: Bud Black...   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Sosa, Rhodes, Twins, Rays, Cubs

A few minor notes from around the MLBiverse... The Mariners have signed Jorge Sosa to a minor league deal. This is Sosa's third organization this season. Despite reports that the Brewers would not add a relief pitcher, Milwaukee had a scout at Friday's game and Geoff Baker believes the scout was there to watch Arthur Rhodes. Joe Christensen says that the Twins may prefer to promote Francisco Liriano, and move him or another starter to the bullpen, rather than trade for a relief pitcher. Joe Maddon says that there is only a "50-50 chance" that the Rays make a move...   Continue Reading

Graziano's Latest: Sherrill, Arroyo, Rhodes, Zaun

Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger has a new Trade Winds column. Graziano notes how incredible the Erik Bedard trade could look for Baltimore if they spin George Sherrill for prospects. He names the Cardinals, Rays, Marlins, and Red Sox as suitors. The Mets fear Sherrill's price tag, while the Yankees don't expect a deal within the division. The Yankees haven't spoken to the Reds about Bronson Arroyo (although based on previous reports, they have scouted him). The Yanks aren't likely to sign Barry Bonds, and aren't terribly thrilled with the catching market. Fernando Martinez's possible injury could increase the...   Continue Reading

Mariners Rumors: Rhodes, Bedard, Washburn

Mariners beat writer Geoff Baker has a new blog post up this morning about the team's trade candidates. In a well thought-out piece, Baker names Arthur Rhodes, Erik Bedard, Jarrod Washburn, Raul Ibanez, and Adrian Beltre as the most likely to go (in that order). A few highlights from the post: Solid lefty relievers are available - mainly Brian Fuentes and Damaso Marte. But the price is reportedly high for both, leaving the 38 year-old Rhodes as a fine alternative. Plus, the '08 Mariners can live without him. Baker indicates that both Bedard and the Mariners favor a trade. However,...   Continue Reading

Selling Off The Mariners

So it's been a bit Mariners heavy today at MLBTR. It makes sense, though. They currently own the worst record in baseball, yet have some chips that could be valuable to contending teams. Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times takes a look at a few teams that might be interested in buying what the M's are selling. Jason Varitek is hitting poorly. Kevin Cash is doing worse. Could the Sox pick up one of the M's catchers? Baker notes that Jamie Burke could catch Tim Wakefield and probably hit better than Cash. Or, what about Kenji Johjima? Baker mentions that...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Hendrickson, Soria, Sherrill

Here's today's random collection of links. The Marlins signed Mark Hendrickson as the veteran leadership guy for '08, at a cost of $1.5MM. He was knocked around in 15 starts for the Dodgers in '07 but was solid in the pen. The Marlins will put him in the rotation, perhaps to tutor fellow southpaws Andrew Miller and Scott Olsen. Craig Brown would like to see the Royals use Joakim Soria as a starter. There is a theory that the Mariners' signing of Arthur Rhodes will allow them to trade George Sherrill in an Erik Bedard deal. Seems a half-baked theory,..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Aramis, La Russa, A-Rod

A random smattering of links this morning... I wrote a postmortem on why the D'Backs beat the Cubs over at The Hardball Times. Just a whisper at the moment, but I'm hearing that the Angels could pursue Aramis Ramirez if the Cubs make him available. They were in hard on him last year when he was briefly a free agent. Seems that Joe Torre is done as Yankees manager, but Tony La Russa is not interested. Another important date to mark down: November 10th. That's when Alex Rodriguez decides whether to opt out of his contract. Right after the GM..   Continue Reading

On Michaels For Rhodes...

Obviously there are a lot of conflicting reports and general confusion surrounding this whole Crisp/Marte/Michaels/Rhodes thing. I've read several iterations, sometimes with catchers involved. I apologize for contributing so little information on this one, but rest assured I've been trying. Here's what little I know: A Cleveland source tells me the Indians are really keeping a lid on everything. He's a lot closer to the team than I, and he hasn't been able to dig up details. I also spoke to a source familiar with the inner workings of the Phillies. He's scrambling for information as well. He told me..   Continue Reading
