Bobby Kielty Rumors

Lots of roster moves for the Amazin's today. Bart Hubbuch tweets that in addition to Wily Mo Pena and Javier Valentin, the Mets have also released outfielder Bobby Kielty. The former Oakland cult hero was hitting .231-.394-.346 in just 33 plate appearances for Triple-A Buffalo.

Lots of stuff in Nick Cafardo's column in the Boston Globe to go over. With around 100 free agents vying for less than 20 remaining roster spots, things become more interesting with 227 players on big-league rosters who are out of options. If a player is out of options and is not rostered, he has to either be traded or designated for assignment. If designated, that player has to clear waivers. This could affect remaining free agent signings. Cafardo makes note of a few who are out of options and may wind up as trade fodder or designated for assignment...

Taking a look back at this week's happenings here on MLBTR... The biggest move of the month was the Diamondbacks' acquisition of slugger Adam Dunn for Dallas Buck, Micah Owings, and Wilkin Castillo. I can't remember any August trades of this magnitude. Bronson Arroyo told the media Dunn would be seeking over $100MM this offseason; Dunn denied the report wholeheartedly. I'd be surprised to see him get $100MM, but I also certainly don't think it would be the worst signing we've seen in the past few offseasons. The Red Sox acquired Paul Byrd from the Indians. Boston will pay the...

Time to gather up today's links. With Mike Lowell headed to the DL, Jeff Horrigan wonders if a waiver trade for an infielder could be in order. ESPN's Buster Olney mentioned the Indians' Jamey Carroll as a possibility for the D'Backs on Monday, though he noted the two teams have not talked. Evan Grant suggests the Rangers trade Engel Beltre or Elvis Andrus for pitching this winter. Additionally, he thinks the Rangers might end up trading Jarrod Saltalamacchia rather than Gerald Laird. Aaron Gleeman revisits the '03 trade of Bobby Kielty for Shannon Stewart. Patrick Newman runs down some lesser-known...

Time to for today's link collection. The Twins signed Bobby Kielty to a minor league deal. The former Twin was released by the Red Sox in July. When he's going good, he can hit lefties pretty well. Peter Magowan is glad the Giants didn't successfully pull off an attempted trade for Manny Ramirez before the '07 season. However, as Henry Schulman notes, that might've prevented the Barry Zito contract. The Reds haven't talked to the agents for any of their potential free agents, and no decision has been made on Adam Dunn. Susan Slusser wonders if the D'Backs will try...

Buster Olney's blog post is overloaded with rumors today. Here's a rundown: Olney's Speculation: Will the Red Sox will express interest in Khalil Greene with Julio Lugo on the DL for 4-6 weeks? Olney also wonders if the Dodgers will seek Huston Street if Takashi Saito is seriously hurt. Scout Speculation: Huston Street and Matt Murton to the Rays for prospects? Bobby Kielty was granted release by the Red Sox. Richie Sexson could decide where to go based on greatest offered playing time. I'd say that's expected for a veteran starter. Olney says that requests for Max Scherzer are keeping...

Here's today's linkage. Bobby Kielty's hand injury drastically reduces the chance of a Coco Crisp trade within the next month. Who needs a lefty reliever? The Nationals' Ray King would like to be traded rather than head to Triple A. Mike Sweeney was excited about signing with the Twins last winter, but the Craig Monroe trade ended that possibility. Susan Slusser doesn't expect the A's to keep both Frank Thomas and Sweeney for very long. Joe Sports Fan ranks the seven best long-term contracts. Any additions? How about Dan Haren at four years and $12.65MM?

Outfielder Bobby Kielty will not opt for free agency; he'll head to Triple A for the Red Sox. Kielty, a 31 year-old switch-hitter, batted .218/.287/.287 in 87 ABs for the A's and Red Sox last year. In his defense, he battled back and calf issues. Kielty can handle all three outfield positions and typically handles lefties well. He'll await a Coco Crisp trade to create an opportunity for him in Boston.

A few random notes from around the MLBiverse... Henry Schulman says the Giants are in need of a backup catcher and a logical choice may be Astros backup Humberto Quintero, whom Bruce Bochy is familiar with from his days with the Padres. He also notes that the Rays have two experienced catchers that were just reassigned to the minor leagues in Josh Paul and Mike DiFelice. The Jays and Alex Rios are closer today to an agreement on a long-term extension than they were yesterday. That according to Rios' agent, Paul Kinzer. Yesterday it was reported that the Jays had...

Some random links for the day... I have created a Fantasy Baseball Closers page at RotoAuthority. With the help of readers it will be constantly updated with current closers and the pecking order of each team. Kris Benson will throw for teams again, probably a week from now. The Phillies will again be in attendance. Benson may only get a minor league deal this time around. I remember when he set the standard with his three-year, $21MM deal. Also, the Phils could look to move Wes Helms or Greg Dobbs now that they've signed Pedro Feliz. The Red Sox had..
