Brian Cashman Rumors

Odds and Ends: Gillick, Cashman, Burnett

Links for Tuesday... Tim's chat will be moved to Wednesday at 2pm CST. J.C. Bradbury thinks A.J. Burnett would be wise to accept Toronto's two-year, $30MM extension offer. Ken Rosenthal examines the Caucasian-ness of the Red Sox roster, and what it could mean to their free agent targets. The AL free agent catchers list is done at Detroit Tigers Thoughts. Eddie has Ivan Rodriguez as the last Type A, though that's not concrete. Sox Machine tries to determine the trade value of the White Sox roster. They consider John Danks, Carlos Quentin, Gordon Beckham, and Aaron Poreda basically untouchable. The...   Continue Reading

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Holliday, Teixeira, Mussina

A look at what is being written around the Blogosphere... MetsBlog recognizes that Francisco Rodriguez will improve the team and appease fans, but is not sure he is worth a four or five-year deal. Mets Geek projects the Mets '09 roster and looks at some options from outside the organization with Pat Burrell and Derek Lowe being the biggest offseason targets. Was Watching says bringing back Brian Cashman was a mistake. River Ave. Blues assesses the Matt Holliday market and feels that Phil Hughes and Robinson Cano for Holliday "doesn't make much sense." Sox and Pinstripes provides an in-depth preview...   Continue Reading

Olney's Latest: Yankees, Cashman, Giambi

A few hot stove notes from ESPN's Buster Olney... Olney heard the Yankees' 2009 payroll will be in the $180MM range, down $29MM or so from this year. The Yankees didn't need to negotiate dollars with Brian Cashman...it was just a matter of whether he wanted to come back. Olney can see Jason Giambi returning to the A's "if the money can be worked out." Does two years, $20MM sound right? A Giambi signing would either push Daric Barton to the bench or Jack Cust to left field.   Continue Reading

Cashman Comments

Peter Abraham has interesting quotes from Yankees GM Brian Cashman: The Yankees are trying to improve their process for scouting Japan. Thinking back to Kei Igawa in '06...that seemed like a direct response to the Red Sox getting Daisuke Matsuzaka. Cashman thinks Mike Mussina is leaning toward retirement. That would complicate Cashman's situation. It seems that Hal Steinbrenner has gotten Hank under control, which would make Cashman's job easier. There will be no advisory board, by the way. Joel Sherman says Cashman is now fighting for his reputation. Cashman cautioned fans against getting too attached to any one free agent....   Continue Reading

Cashman Signs Extension With Yankees

8:39pm: The extension runs through 2011. Cashman looks forward to the challenge. 4:16pm: Kat O'Brien of Newsday is reporting that Brian Cashman and the Yankees have reached an agreement on a three-year extension. Brian Cashman has agreed to return as the Yankees general manager on a three-year contract, Newsday has learned. Cashman deliberated over the decision about whether it was time to move on after 11 seasons as GM, but gave the Yankees an affirmative answer this afternoon. In the end, a Yankees source said, it came down to what was best for his family. The new contract will be...   Continue Reading

Yankees Rumors: Jeter, Sabathia, Hudson

Let's talk Yankees. Ken Davidoff makes recommendations for the '09 Yankees. He would sign Derek Lowe and Andy Pettitte, and offer arbitration to Damaso Marte and Bobby Abreu. Jim Baumbach explains a tricky situation coming up: re-signing Derek Jeter. Peter Abraham takes a look at various free agents on the minds' of Yankees fans. Tyler Kepner of the New York Times says first priority for the Yankees is to re-sign Brian Cashman. I imagine they already have a Plan B in place, but recent reports lean toward Cashman returning. Kepner says the Indians were aggressive in pursuing a deadline deal...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Manny, K-Rod, Cashman

Lets discuss the latest column from SI.com's Jon Heyman. The Mets are "disinclined" to go after Manny Ramirez or break up the Jose Reyes-David Wright-Carlos Beltran core. Heyman, like Ken Davidoff, feels the Mets can't afford to sit out the Francisco Rodriguez sweepstakes. If not him, then at least Brian Fuentes. Heyman says Brian Cashman "appears likely" to return as Yankees GM. He notes that Cashman wouldn't have ended up in Seattle anyway because of the return of Mariners chairman Howard Lincoln.   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Mariners GM, Burnett

Check out Ken Rosenthal's Full Count video from last weekend. Some highlights: The Mariners are looking for fresh blood in their GM search. A few names in the mix: Kim Ng, Jerry DiPoto, and Tony LaCava. If the Mariners opt for experience they could try to lure Brian Cashman or even Brian Sabean. Rosenthal notes that an offer of essentially four years, $54MM from the Jays won't cut it for A.J. Burnett. Instead of $13.5MM a year, he'll receive $15-20MM per according to Rosenthal. Ken sees the Yankees, Red Sox, and Mets in the mix if C.C. Sabathia winds up...   Continue Reading

Odds & Ends: Roberts, Holliday, Cashman

Some points of interest: Brian Roberts, once a sure-fire bet to be dealt, is now a priority for the Orioles to resign according to Marc Carig of the Washington Post. The second baseman wants to play for a contender and says all the right things about wanting to stay with Baltimore. Roberts is 31 and will finish in the top 5 in average, doubles, stolen bases, and runs scored. According to Troy E. Renck, Matt Holliday is not happy about the idea that his back injury might influence contract talks with Colorado. Renck quotes Holliday, "It's a stiff back, and...   Continue Reading

Yankees Want Cashman Back

9:18pm: The Steinbrenners want to know Cashman's decision by next week, according to SI.com's Jon Heyman. If he agrees to stay, the two sides will then hammer out a contract. 9:06am: The Yankees officially want GM Brian Cashman back, according to Kat O'Brien of Newsday. Hal Steinbrenner told O'Brien, and Cashman confirmed the team's desire. The two parties have yet to discuss dollars on a possible contract. Cashman prefers to wait until after the season. O'Brien's sources say Cashman is torn on this decision, in part due to concerns for his family. Hal played down his brother's "advisory board" talk;...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Cashman, Roberts, Lowe

Rounding up links for Thursday... Ken Davidoff of Newsday notes which player moves were entirely Brian Cashman's, and which came from above. Buster Olney wonders if Doug Melvin could replace Cashman as the Yankees' GM. Olney stresses that it's pure speculation on his part. Viva El Birdos asks what it would take for the Cardinals to acquire Brian Roberts. John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press says the Tigers should sign Derek Lowe this winter. Will Lowe get a four year deal? Bud Selig tells Ken Rosenthal the Manny Ramirez trade was completed before the deadline. Jerry Crasnick says the...   Continue Reading

Davidoff Less Sure Cashman Will Return To Yankees

Newsday's Ken Davidoff says he's still betting that Brian Cashman will return to the Yankees next season, but he's adjusting his odds. Will Cashman come back? I'm downgrading my odds of his return from 65-35 to 55-45. I think his season has been very draining for Cashman. While he thought the team might miss the playoffs this year, he fingered the pitching, not the hitting. The fan and media criticism has been strong, and while Hank doesn't actually do much, comments like the ones he made Thursday put Cashman in a position he knows all too well: Reacting to outrageous...   Continue Reading

Hank Steinbrenner Forming Advisory Group

SATURDAY: Cashman responds to the advisory group comments. He wouldn't say whether he wants to return. THURSDAY: Peter Abraham relays comments Hank Steinbrenner made to the AP today. Hank will review the entire organization and put together an advisory group for decision-making. Brian Cashman would still be in charge, but it sounds like too many cooks in the kitchen. Cashman probably will not want to stay if he loses autonomy. Speculation is that Cashman could consider the vacancies in Philadelphia or Seattle. One thing's for sure - the Yankees are prepared to throw around some cash this winter. Steinbrenner seemingly...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Sabathia, Steinbrenner, Heilman

Let's take a look at Jon Heyman's latest column at SI.com. Heyman talked to "several baseball people" who believe the Angels will be a player for C.C. Sabathia this winter. Possibly, but I think re-signing Mark Teixeira will be their top priority. Heyman spoke to a competing owner who can't see the Angels doing two $100MM+ deals. Heyman considers Hank Steinbrenner's recent comments a slap at GM Brian Cashman, but notes that Hal is running the team. The Rockies and D'Backs have inquired about Aaron Heilman in the past; they may view him as a starting candidate.   Continue Reading

Several Teams Could Have New GMs In '09

A few articles today take a look at some GM positions in '09 that will have new faces... Michael Radano takes a look at who might fill the GM post for the Phillies in '09. Based on the Phillies current success, Radano wonders if they should just promote from within. That would mean one of the team's assistant GMs, Mike Arbuckle and Ruben Amaro Jr. Both Arbuckle and Amaro have interviewed with other teams for open GM positions in the past. Rick Freeman takes a look at the names most likely to end up as the GM in Seattle (John...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Soto, Joba, Colletti, Tazawa

Let's dig in with today's links! As you know, the Steinbrenners want Brian Cashman back for '09. Now it's up to him. Geovany Soto was discussed as a throw-in on the trade that ultimately sent Sammy Sosa to Baltimore back in '05. One that did get away that year: Ricky Nolasco (in the Juan Pierre deal). Michael Gluckstadt interviewed ESPN's Buster Olney. CBSSports.com's Danny Knobler takes a look at the deep free agent class of starting pitchers. Dave Cameron considers this "the greatest collection of free agent arms to hit free agency at the same time in the history of...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Washburn, Cashman, Garcia, Lofton

SI.com's Jon Heyman checks in with a new column. Jarrod Washburn reportedly cleared waivers, though Heyman's use of the word "reportedly" makes me think the statement came from one of the shaky reports floating about. We'll wait for definitive word on that one. Heyman's sources say the Yankees plan to offer a new contract to GM Brian Cashman after the season. Hank Steinbrenner has apparently warmed to Cashman. Additionally, "club higherups" expect Cashman will want to stay rather than jump to the Seattle job. Heyman loves the Freddy Garcia acquisition; he wonders if Garcia will be motivated by Ozzie Guillen's...   Continue Reading

Sherman's Latest: Adenhart, Burnett, Niese, Ibanez

Joel Sherman of the New York Post has been digging up rumors left and right - here, here, and here in recent days. Let's discuss. The Angels have "hinted at a willingness to build a deal around pitching prospect Nick Adenhart." This would apparently involve Mark Teixeira or Matt Holliday. The Phillies made an initial offer last week for A.J. Burnett, and the Jays were thoroughly unimpressed. The Phillies won't discuss prospects Carlos Carrasco, Lou Marson, or Greg Golson in trades. The Yankees have zero interest in Burnett. The A's are willing to move Joe Blanton. He's not perfect, but...   Continue Reading

GM Trade History: Brian Cashman

Next up in our GM Trade History series, the Yankees' Brian Cashman. Cash's current contract with the Yanks runs through this season. Many thanks to Brendan Bianowicz for putting together Cashman's history, which can be downloaded as an Excel spreadsheet here. Please let us know in the comments if you find any errors or omissions. Commenters have mentioned that this info would be better as a searchable webpage, and I agree. We'll look into that after Brendan has finished all the GMs.   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: White Sox, Mackowiak, Garcia, Rays

A gathering of Sunday afternoon links... From the What Might've Been File - Phil Rogers reminds us that the White Sox offered more than the Cubs did for Kosuke Fukudome. The White Sox seem content with the current roster. River Ave. Blues doesn't expect Brian Cashman and the Yankees to pursue an impact player at the trade deadline. The Reds signed Rob Mackowiak to a minor league deal. Free agent Freddy Garcia is looking to sign before the trade deadline. Garcia says he feels like he has a new shoulder. For the first time in their history, the Rays will...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Cashman, Fuentes, Braves, Fielder

Time for a new Ken Rosenthal column. Rosenthal reminds us that, among other things, Adam Dunn played with a broken hand for a couple of months in '05. So maybe he does like baseball. It's not fair to criticize a player's passion simply because he doesn't make the right facial expressions or throw tantrums (not saying J.P. Ricciardi did this, but many fans do). Mark Teixeira might be looking for eight years and $160MM. Rosenthal says not to count his hometown Orioles out, though they aren't the most likely suitor. Brian Cashman "seems likely to sign a contract extension" with...   Continue Reading

Yanks, Cashman To Talk Extension

According to Ed Price of the Newark Star-Ledger, Hank Steinbrenner will discuss an extension with GM Brian Cashman this week (hat tip to River Avenue Blues). Steinbrenner's "impression" is that both sides want to continue the relationship. Possibilities if Cashman wants a change: the opening in Philadelphia, and Seattle if the Mariners fire Bill Bavasi. Bavasi blames himself for putting together the last-place Ms.   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Royals, Cashman, Tavarez

4:45pm: Updating the Tavarez item - the Boston Herald reports that he's accepted a minor league assignment in order to buy the Red Sox more time in trading him. 10:38am: Here's today's link collection. MLB.com's Dick Kaegel hears the Royals are leaning toward an impact bat in the June draft. Baseball America predicted catcher Buster Posey, while Jonathan Mayo went with first baseman Eric Hosmer. First baseman Justin Smoak is another possibility. Paul DePodesta tells a story about the gamesmanship of the draft. Hank Steinbrenner says there's a chance Brian Cashman will be the Yankees' GM next year, if he...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Cashman, Matsuo, Durham

Some random links to ponder today... Peter Abraham submitted nine reader questions to Yankees GM Brian Cashman. I liked reading about how Cashman deals with agents who lie to him. The Red Sox signed free agent Terumasa Matsuo, who was pitching in a Japanese independent league. I have no idea what the 26 year-old pitcher is capable of. Tracy Ringolsby says the Giants really want to move Ray Durham and Dave Roberts, and will pick up some salary to do so. Durham makes $7.5MM in '08. Roberts gets $6.5MM in each of the '08 and '09 seasons. The Big Lead...   Continue Reading

Notes From Hot Stove, Cool Music: Cashman, Santana, Varitek

A few interesting tidbits came about via the Hot Stove, Cool Music charitable event on Saturday. The Boston Herald's Rob Bradford has the details. Brian Cashman admitted that he lost some power when the Hank and Hal regime took over. He no longer has full authority to run everything, a sticking point when he signed on several years ago. It would not be shocking to see Cashman move on when his term ends after the 2008 season. He's finishing up a three-year, $5.4MM deal. For what it's worth, Theo Epstein seemed to indicate that the dragging Johan Santana talks are..   Continue Reading
