Carlos Delgado Rumors
By Tim Dierkes [November 6, 2008 at 5:18pm CST]
5:18pm: More on the Mets: Ken Davidoff says they're shopping Aaron Heilman, Scott Schoeneweis, and Pedro Feliciano. The A's, Rays, and Rangers are fans of Heilman. The Rockies, Cardinals, Cubs, and D'Backs were also tossed into the mix by Adam Rubin, though the D'Backs haven't had recent talks. The Mets would be willing to pick up some of the $3.6MM owed to Schoeneweis next year. 4:58pm: Brian Fuentes' agent Rick Thurman calls the below rumor of an offer to the Mets a "total fabrication." 10:56am: Checking in on the Mets... Tracy Ringolsby says Brian Fuentes' agents proposed a four-year, $44MM...

9:15pm: Michael Schmidt has a look at the amusing binder the Boras Corporation compiled to sell Oliver Perez. 6:31pm: Mets GM Omar Minaya commented on Manny Ramirez, indicating that he plans to invest in pitching instead. 2:34pm: The Mets expressed preliminary interest in Jon Garland and Ryan Dempster, according to Ken Davidoff. Dempster's agent made it clear that he won't be re-signing with the Cubs soon. 1:23pm: ESPN's Buster Olney wrote in his blog this morning that the Mets are probably not willing to go past three years for Francisco Rodriguez or any reliever. 10:03am: More Mets chatter from Joel...

Links for Saturday... Huston Street tries to ignore the chatter, but realizes he might be traded before the season starts. Curt Schilling's Red Sox career is probably over, writes MLB.com's Ian Browne. Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski said the Tigers are open to improving the team in creative ways, but he's not looking to trade away the team's "core players." Other than Justin Verlander and Armando Galarraga, there's a whole lot of uncertainty in the Tigers' 2009 rotation, writes Jon Paul Morosi. It looks like the Mets won't trade Carlos Delgado. Instead, they'll focus on rebuilding their bullpen and improving in...

According to Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog, the Mets picked up Carlos Delgado's $12MM option for 2009 today. GM Omar Minaya announced this plan about a month ago. It was an easy call on Delgado, given the $4MM buyout. The 36 year-old first baseman hit .271/.353/.518 in 686 plate appearances.

The Mets made Omar Minaya's extension official today. It runs through 2012 with club options for two years beyond that. Matthew Cerrone at MetsBlog likes the decision, but feels the term is excessive. Additionally, Minaya announced that the Mets will exercise Carlos Delgado's $12MM option for '09. This seemed like an easy decision given the $4MM buyout. The Mets were not going to find an .800 OPS first baseman on the free agent market for a one-year, $8MM deal. On the bullpen front, ESPN's Buster Olney says rival execs expect the Mets to aggressively pursue free agent Brian Fuentes. I'm...

I will offer my own opinions on how to improve the Mets in the Offseason Outlook, due within a few weeks. Many journalists have already weighed in - let's take a look. Newly added bullet: John Harper of the New York Daily News. He advises the Mets to decline Delgado's option while signing Orlando Hudson, Raul Ibanez, and Derek Lowe and trading for J.J. Putz. Say goodbye to Castillo, Perez, and Martinez in this plan. Ken Davidoff of Newsday: Sign free agents Francisco Rodriguez, Darren Oliver, Juan Rivera, Fernando Tatis, and Wes Helms. Also sign one of Jon Garland, Derek...

You may recall Jayson Stark's September 12th article, where he explained the details of Carlos Delgado's 2009 option. Stark wrote that Delgado's option could've flipped from $12MM to $16MM if he won the World Series MVP and finished top six in the regular MVP vote. Delgado still might snag a few MVP votes, but he won't be winning any postseason awards with the Mets eliminated. GM Omar Minaya has an easy decision - exercise at $12MM or buy Delgado out for $4MM. Earlier this year the buyout seemed a lock; now we're certain to see the option exercised.

ESPN's Jayson Stark has the details on Carlos Delgado's 2009 option. Delgado needs to amass 30 "awards points" over 2005-08 for the option to change from $12MM to $16MM. He has five points in the bank from '05. To get the other 25, Delgado will need to finish in the top six in MVP voting and win World Series MVP. If Delgado reaches the 30 points, the $16MM is not an option - it vests. Under those circumstances, the Mets probably would not mind. Still, most likely the Mets will be faced with a $12MM option or a $4MM buyout,...

Ken Rosenthal has a lot to offer in his latest Full Count video: The Mets will prefer to pickup Carlos Delgado's $12MM option rather than buy him out for $4MM. That's a guarantee for a guy who should finish the year around 35-100 despite not contributing for the first two months. According to sources, Manny Ramirez is unlikely to go the Mets. They will more likely focus their spending on pitching. John Maine has a bone spur in his right shoulder. Pedro Martinez and Oliver Perez are free agents. The Mets will need to go after starting pitching. If the...

Hot stove highlights from Jayson Stark's latest... Stark sees the Mets picking up Carlos Delgado's $12MM option for '09, taking them out of the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes. He sees the Yankees in the mix for Tex. Will Teixeira top the $140MM the Rangers offered him? The Yanks will also pursue a top flight starting pitcher, with C.C. Sabathia and Ben Sheets as Plans A and B. Stark does not see the Braves diving into megadeals for Sabathia, Sheets, or A.J. Burnett. They'll have payroll room, but could pursue trades or mid-tier free agents. Stark says friends of Tom Glavine and...

Time for today's linkage. Geoff Baker tries to determine who "won" the Jose Vidro trade. Ken Davidoff doesn't expect anyone of value to clear waivers. We didn't have much August trade action last year either. Some decent names were dealt in August of '06 though - David Wells, Shawn Green, Jamie Moyer, Livan Hernandez, Ryan Franklin, Eric Hinske, and Scott Schoeweneis. The Mets can retain Carlos Delgado for '09 at essentially $8MM, since there's a hefty $4MM buyout on his $12MM option. Back in May Delgado's agent said it was a $16MM option. However, MetsBlog's Matthew Cerrone told me that...

Ken Rosenthal has some items worth discussing in his latest Full Count video: Trade Carlos Delgado for Richie Sexson? Rosenthal doesn't see why not. They're both in walk years, neither have a no-trade-clause, and they're both making roughly the same amount. I'll add to that by noting both have arguably met more success hitting in each other's league. The Indians may put Paul Byrd on the block in an effort to acquire pieces that could eventually lead to an upgrade at 2B or 3B later this season. The Indians currently have 7 capable starters in Sabathia, Carmona, Lee, Byrd, Westbrook,...

Here's the latest link collection. Former Dodgers GM Paul DePodesta is now blogging for the public. He currently works for the Padres as Special Assistant for Baseball Operations. In his words, Kevin Millwood felt a stabbing pain even though he hadn't been stabbed. He's on the shelf with a groin injury, taking him off the trade market temporarily. Rays Index had some quality draft links yesterday about the Rays and their #1 pick. Jim Callis of Baseball America says catcher Buster Posey is "the current favorite." Joel Sherman wonders what might've been if the Yankees had signed Ted Lilly instead...

I love lists, and here's one from Peter Abraham at The Journal News that details who he thinks is in the hot seat. In other words, who might be traded or released if current trends continue. There are a number of managers and GMs on the list, but we like to focus on players here. I'm going to go through the list and take stabs-in-the-dark whether a player is likely to be dealt or if they're just fluff for Mr. Abraham's article - and then we can discuss in the comments. Jason Giambi - An announcer this year said that...

And for my first trick: My very first Odds and Ends. The Toronto Star's aptly named Blue Jays blog reports the team placed Vernon Wells on the 15-day DL, and they expect him to be out six to eight weeks after fracturing his left wrist during Friday night's game. The Jay's also placed reliever Jeremy Accardo on the 15-day DL with a strained right forearm. As replacements, the Jays will call up infielder Joe Inglett and veteran hurler Armando Benitez. With Wells out, do the Jays re-enter the Barry Bonds speculation market? David Wells in Pinstripes? No deal says Joe...

Is Carlos Delgado the next Frank Thomas? Or worse yet, is he the next Mike Piazza? Sammy Sosa? Barry Bonds? (steroid implications aside). So asks Joel Sherman of the NY Post who's headline - always in that in-your-face extra-bold verdana - reads "DELGADO ON HIS WAY OUT AT FIRST". With aging veterans out of work, and a rash of young talent being locked up, 2008 really feels like the end of one era and the marked beginning of the next. An arbitrary fun-fact from Sherman, "In the past 25 years, just one champion has had a regular first baseman older...

Buster Olney has some thoughts. Let's have a looksee. He thinks that Xavier Nady could fit with the Mets or the Indians, but notes that the Pirates are sitting tight for now, hoping to compete this year. They'll be singing a different tune in July. Olney goes on to speculate that the Mets could release Carlos Delgado if he continues his weak hitting. Nady would seem a decent replacement, though he hasn't played first since 2006. Scott Hatteberg could be another option. In what he calls "pure speculation," Olney suggests that the Mariners trade Jeff Clement to the Red Sox...

The Blue Jays are on the hook for the rest of Frank Thomas' salary this year, making him a fine bargain for a team looking for a DH. It seems that the signing team will not be liable for his 2009 vesting option. As an injury-prone DH with clubhouse concerns, Thomas has similarities to Barry Bonds. The Big Hurt will come more cheaply, offering less production but no steroid baggage. As far as suitors: Mariners GM Bill Bavasi will talk to his scouts about Thomas. Question for Mariners fans: does Thomas offer more at DH than Jeff Clement, who is...

Some interesting tidbits this afternoon before I check out: Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that one of Brian Sabean's top advisors, Ted Uhlaender, was present to witness Joe Crede's homer off of Arizona's Max Scherzer on Saturday. Seems more and more likely, as Crede proves his back is fine, that he will be moved to the Giants. Will the White Sox get Kevin Correia in exchange for Crede? The White Sox need a back-of-the-rotation guy, and Kenny Williams and company think they can win this year. So prospects probably won't get it done. While the Giants could...

With Carlos Delgado being sent to New York for an MRI on his sore right hip, the Mets may be in need of first base help. Delgado hurt the same hip toward the end of last season, missing 2 1/2 weeks during the stretch run. The Mets say it's not serious this time but Delgado is starting to show signs that he's becoming old before his time. He may not be able to bounce back as quickly as he once did. Now the Mets might be another potential destination for Scott Hatteberg if Joey Votto shoves him out of Cincinnati....
