<p>Here are some news items from around the baseball world...</p>
<ul>
<li>While it has been assumed that the <strong>Cardinals</strong> will part ways with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/beltrca01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Carlos Beltran</a></strong> after this season, <a href="http://www.stltoday.com/sports/columns/bernie-miklasz/bernie-bytes-does-beltran-have-a-future-with-cards/article_fe2a81ee-47c8-53e7-be01-15ac609ab879.html" target="_blank">Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch</a> thinks both Beltran and the Cardinals could benefit from Beltran re-signing a short-term contract, provided the veteran was willing to take a hometown discount.&#0160; While Miklasz has a point that Beltran is a surer thing to produce for a contender than youngsters like <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=tavera001osc&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Oscar Taveras</a></strong> or <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/adamsma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Matt Adams</a></strong>, I would be surprised if Beltran returned to St. Louis in 2014.&#0160; If the Cards were confident enough in their young talent to let <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pujolal01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Albert Pujols</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lohseky01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Kyle Lohse</a></strong> go, they&#39;ll do with the same with Beltran.</li>
<li>The <strong>Diamondbacks</strong> may not need to make any major moves before the trade deadline, <a href="http://mlbbuzz.yardbarker.com/blog/mlbbuzz/article/diamondbacks_no_need_to_buy/13664938" target="_blank">FOX Sports&#39; Ken Rosenthal</a> writes.&#0160; The Snakes have depth at several positions and further reinforcements are coming as some injured players return from the disabled list.&#0160; The only possible area of need could be at closer given <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/putzjj01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">J.J. Of course, Jackson inked a four-year deal with the Cubs that should give him some stability, but that&#39;s not his first stop in Chicago.</p>
<p>Jackson spent parts of two seasons across town as a member of the White Sox rotation from 2010-11. General manager Kenny Williams <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/07/white-sox-acquire-edwin-jackson.html" target="_blank">swung a midseason deal</a> in 2010 that brought a struggling Jackson from the Diamondbacks to the White Sox in exchange for right-hander <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hudsoda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Daniel Hudson</a></strong> (23 years old at the time) and minor league lefty <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=holmbe001dav&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">David Holmberg</a></strong> (18). It&#39;s been nearly three years since that trade occurred, so let&#39;s take a look at the players involved...
</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Major League Side:</span></strong><a class="asset-img-link" href="http://rotoauthority.blogs.com/.a/6a00d834515b9a69e201901c658595970b-pi" style="float: right;"><img alt="Edwin" class="asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d834515b9a69e201901c658595970b" src="http://rotoauthority.blogs.com/.a/6a00d834515b9a69e201901c658595970b-250wi" style="width: 225px; margin: 0px 0px 5px 10px; border: 3px solid #cccccc;" title="Edwin" /></a></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Edwin Jackson: </strong>While he had thrown a no-hitter for the D-backs that season, Jackson was struggling at the time of the trade. He&#39;d posted a 5.16 ERA in in 21 starts but was coming off a solid 2009 campaign and had one and a half years of team control remaining. Jackson turned things around with the South Siders in a big way. His K/9 rate soared from 7.0 to 9.2 while his BB/9 dropped from 4.0 to 2.2. Jackson contributed 1.9 WAR (per Fangraphs) to an 88-win season for the White Sox, but they came up short and finished second in the AL Central. He was terrific in the first half of 2011 as well, posting an even 3.0 WAR before being traded to the Blue Jays (who immediately <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/07/jays-acquire-rasmus-from-cards-for-jackson-rzepczynski-dotel.html" target="_blank">flipped him</a> to St. Louis) in a deal that netted <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/frasoja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jason Frasor</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/stewaza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Zach Stewart</a></strong> while also freeing the Sox of the remaining $7.2MM on <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/teahema01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Mark Teahen</a></strong>&#39;s contract.</li>
<li><strong>Daniel Hudson: </strong>Hudson ranked as Chicago&#39;s No. 3 prospect, per Baseball America, prior to the 2010 season. He&#39;d struggled in three big league starts that year, but he was a revelation for the Diamondbacks down the stretch. In 11 starts following the trade, Hudson posted a 1.69 ERA, 7.9 K/9 and 1.8 BB/9, cementing his place in&#0160;Arizona&#39;s rotation. He followed up that 2.2 WAR effort with an incredible 4.9-win sophomore campaign for the D-backs, but he was a Tommy John victim after just nine ugly starts in 2012. All told, Hudson has a 3.58 ERA, 7.2 K/9 and 2.0 BB/9 in 347 innings as a Diamondback. He&#39;s not yet eligible for arbitration and can be controlled through 2016.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Minor League Side:</span></strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>David Holmberg: </strong>At the time of the trade, Holmberg was BA&#39;s eighth-ranked White Sox prospect, but he&#39;d struggled to a 4.46 ERA in eight starts in the rookie-level Pioneer League that season. Holmberg has ascended quickly, however, and now ranks as the D-backs&#39; No. 6 prospect according to BA and the No. 8 prospect <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2013/" target="_blank">according to MLB.com&#39;s Jonathan Mayo</a>. BA notes that Holmberg is likely to reach his ceiling of a No. 3 or 4 starter in the Major Leagues thanks to his plus command and a very strong changeup. His fastball sits 88-91 mph and can touch 93 at times. Mayo notes that while <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/skaggty01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Tyler Skaggs</a></strong> is the lefty who gets all of the buzz in the Diamondbacks&#39; system, Holmberg &quot;isn&#39;t that far behind him.&quot; Holmberg reached Double-A as a 20-year-old in 2012 and made 15 solid starts. Now 21 years of age, he&#39;s opened the 2013 season at the same level and sports a 3.10 ERA 6.3 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 151 career Double-A innings.</li>
</ul>
<p>Three years later, it looks like the Diamondbacks got a very good return for a talented but struggling starter. It&#39;s conceivable that within the next two seasons, 40 percent of Arizona&#39;s rotation will consist of the two players they received in this deal. Jerry Dipoto, the D-backs&#39; GM at the time of the trade (he&#39;s now GM of the Angels), did well to secure a pair of prospects who ranked in Chicago&#39;s Top 10.</p>
<p>The price Chicago paid doesn&#39;t seem crazy either, given Jackson&#39;s terrific results with the White Sox. Jackson gave them 4.9 wins above replacement, but most fans will look back on this trade in a negative light due to the lack of return for Jackson when they traded him a year later. That&#39;s a fair criticism (and also a trade for another post), but Jackson was every bit the pitcher the White Sox were hoping he&#39;d be when they acquired him. This would probably go down as a win-win had the Sox contended in 2011 or made the playoffs in 2010.</p>

Rosenthal notes that GM Ned Colletti might find himself on the hot seat as well, but that the typical pattern is for the manager to be the first out the door. <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/west-notes-chavez-astros-angels-mattingly.html" target="_blank">When asked recently</a> whether Mattingly would remain with the Dodgers through the end of the season, team president Stan Kasten replied, &quot;<em>I assume so</em>,&quot; but noted that he expected the team to play better. Here&#39;s more from the NL West.</p>
<ul>
<li>Despite his hot start, <strong>Diamondbacks</strong> first baseman <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/goldspa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Paul Goldschmidt</a></strong> isn&#39;t worried about money he might end up losing as a result of his recent extension, <a href="http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/jon-heyman/22270865/did-diamondbacks-star-paul-goldschmidt-leave-75-million-on-the-table" target="_blank">CBS Sports&#39; Jon Heyman reports</a>. &quot;<em>You make the best decision at the time</em>,&quot; says Goldschmidt. &quot;<em>I love it in Phoenix. I was happy we got a deal done.
And I&#39;m happy to get it done in spring training, so it didn&#39;t become a distraction</em>.&quot; Heyman cites an anonymous agent who says that the extension could cost Goldschmidt $75MM. That seems like an exaggeration, but Goldschmidt could easily make his <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/03/diamondbacks-paul-goldschmidt-agree-to-extension.html" target="_blank">five year, $32MM deal</a> look like a bargain from the Diamondbacks&#39; perspective if he continues hitting anything resembling his current .335/.418/.645 pace. </li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gregodi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Didi Gregorius</a></strong>&#39; surprising hitting so far in the big leagues is making the Diamondbacks&#39; end of the <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/choosh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Shin-Soo Choo</a></strong> / <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bauertr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Trevor Bauer</a></strong> deal with the Reds and Indians look better with time. But <a href="http://www.azcentral.com/insiders/nickpiecoro/2013/05/18/didi-gregorius-outperforming-his-track-record-farm-report-other-stuff/" target="_blank">Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic wonders</a> whether Gregorius&#39; hitting can last. No one in the last ten years has posted a career minor-league OPS below .725 (minimum 1,900 plate appearances) and a career major-league OPS above .741 (minimum 500 plate appearances). Gregorius had a .694 career minor-league OPS; his major-league OPS through 106 plate appearances is .884.</li>
<li><strong>Rockies </strong>pitcher <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/oswalro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Roy Oswalt</a></strong> will join the Double-A Tulsa Drillers on Tuesday and will make his first start on Friday, ROOT Sports&#39; Tracy Ringolsby notes <a href="https://twitter.com/ROOTSPORTS_TR/status/336230822979964929" target="_blank">(on Twitter)</a>. Ringolsby projects Oswalt would make his fifth minor-league start June 14. Oswalt can opt out of his contract with the Rockies on <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/latest-on-roy-oswalt-contract-details-future.html" target="_blank">either June 18 or June 28</a> if he has not been added to the big-league roster. <div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>Here are a few notes from around the National League:</p>
<ul>
<li>When the <strong>Diamondbacks</strong> shipped young outfielder <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/u/uptonju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Justin Upton</a></strong> to the <strong>Braves</strong>, the biggest major league piece they got back was utilityman extraordinaire <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pradoma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Martin Prado</a></strong>. Now, with the two clubs in the midst of their first series of the year, Prado has reflected on the deal. As <a href="http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130513&amp;content_id=47433662&amp;notebook_id=47445392&amp;vkey=notebook_atl&amp;c_id=atl" target="_blank">MLB.com&#39;s Mark Bowman reports</a>, Prado says he is happy for his former club:&#0160;<em>“The thing that makes me feel real good is that you know that you got traded and the [Braves] now look better. I’m happy because all of my ex-teammates can see that they gave up something, but actually got a better team. That’s what [Braves general manager Frank Wren] was looking for. He made a good move.”</em>&#0160;Having spent his entire career in the Atlanta organization, Prado explained that the shock of the trade took more than a month to wear off.</li>
<li>While Prado has hit below his career norms to start the year, one of the players he was traded for -- third baseman <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=johnsch05,johnso011chr&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Chris Johnson</a></strong> -- is off to a stellar beginning of the season for Atlanta. As David O&#39;Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution <a href="https://twitter.com/ajcbraves/status/334181965534216192" target="_blank">tweets</a>, Johnson says he is excited to be squaring off against his former club: <em>&quot;Any time you get traded, you want to come back to the place you got traded from and show them what they&#39;re missing.&quot;</em>&#0160;Johnson, along with platoon partner <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=francju02,franci004jua&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Juan Francisco</a></strong>, effectively took over for Prado as the replacement for the retired <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jonesch06.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Chipper Jones</a></strong>. Now, Johnson is off to a career-best slash line of .324/.355/.486 over his first 110 plate appearances.</li>
<li><strong>Dodgers</strong> manager Don Mattingly may be the obvious choice to take the fall for his club&#39;s rough start, but <a href="http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/don-mattingly-on-hot-seat-but-other-options-scarce-051313" target="_blank">Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says</a> there is little to be gained from such a move at this time. For one thing, says Rosenthal, there is no obvious replacement who could get more production from the team. And with several major players seemingly likely to return soon from injury, Mattingly should get a while longer to try and manufacture a turnaround.</li>
<li>No doubt Mattingly&#39;s job security will depend in part on the form of top offseason acquisition <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/greinza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Zack Greinke</a></strong> after he recovers from a broken collarbone. Mattingly says that Greinke will return to the mound tomorrow night against the Nationals, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports&#0160;<a href="https://twitter.com/kengurnick/status/334445129018507264" target="_blank">on Twitter</a>.</li>
<li>Meanwhile, Los Angeles is continuing to undertake a major change in how it draws players into the organization, <a href="https://twitter.com/BillShaikin/status/334415094182182912" target="_blank">tweets</a> Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times. Shaikin says that the Dodgers have signed 46 amateur ballplayers from Latin America since the new ownership group took over last year. The previous ownership group had <em>&quot;all but killed&quot;</em>&#0160;the club&#39;s Latin America presence, says Shaikin.</li>

<p>Here&#39;s some news as we head towards a full slate of Mother&#39;s Day baseball...</p>

<li>The <strong>Cardinals</strong>&#39; pitching depth was one reason they were comfortable letting <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lohseky01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Kyle Lohse</a></strong> leave in the offseason, the latest case of the Cards saving money and still contending thanks to their constant supply of young talent, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/12/sports/baseball/cardinals-spend-wisely-and-keep-on-winning.html?smid=tw-nytsports&amp;seid=auto&amp;_r=0" target="_blank">Tyler Kepner of the New York Times</a> writes.&#0160; “<em>I would say it this way: you don’t want to have a situation where you

payroll allocation without going too long and deep</em>.”</li>

<li>Also <a href="http://www.azcentral.com/sports/diamondbacks/articles/20130511atlanta-braves-justin-upton-says-he-has-no-hard-feelings-about-arizona-diamondbacks.html?nclick_check=1" target="_blank">from Piecoro</a>, he hears from <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/u/uptonju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Justin Upton</a></strong> and <strong>Diamondbacks</strong> GM Kevin Towers that neither side has hard feelings about <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/01/braves-to-acquire-justin-upton.html" target="_blank">the big trade</a> that sent Upton to the <strong>Braves</strong> in January.&#0160; It has particularly worked out for Upton, who is enjoying an MVP-caliber season for NL East-leading Atlanta.</li>

Relievers <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=deloss002fra&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Frank De Los Santos</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=yates-001kir&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Kirby Yates</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/belivje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jeff Beliveau</a></strong> preserved the no-no.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/rays/no-hitter-for-triple-a-durham----odorizzi-3-relievers/2119338" target="_self">Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times</a> spoke with Odorizzi, who said he had all his weapons working during the game. &quot;<em>Everything was going my way. The defense was good behind me. It seemed everything was hit right at someone. Just kind of one of those days where everything goes your way.</em>&quot; He has now held opponents scoreless in each of his last two starts (12 innings).</p>
<p>Although it&#39;s easy to get excited about Odorizzi&#39;s quick start to the season, the hype comes with caveats. The young hurler has always been an extreme flyball pitcher and his groundball rate is well below average on the year at slightly more than 22%.&#0160;</p>
<p>Odorizzi&#39;s pitching repertoire includes solid stuff but he lacks &quot;plus stuff.&quot; He has average control and above-average command of his offerings: an 87-92 mph fastball, slider, curveball and change-up. In pre-season top prospects lists, <a href="http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8891538/mlb-top-100-prospects-2012-jurickson-profar-dylan-bundy-more" target="_blank">Keith Law of ESPN</a> (68th), <a href="http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/2013/02/2013-top-100-prospects-list/" target="_blank">Baseball America</a> (92nd), and <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2013/" target="_blank">MLB.com</a> (42nd)&#0160;all ranked Odorizzi amongst the top 100 in the game. Baseball America&#39;s scouting report referred to the hurler&#39;s ceiling as that of a No. 3 or 4 starter.</p>
<p>Originally selected 32nd overall by the Milwaukee Brewers during that 2008 amateur draft, the Illinois native has been traded twice in his young career. He was sent to the Kansas City Royals in December 2010 during the <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/greinza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Zack Greinke</a></strong> deal. Almost exactly two years later, Odorizzi was flipped to Tampa Bay in the <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/shielja02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">James Shields</a></strong>/<strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/daviswa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Wade Davis</a></strong> swap. If Tampa Bay -- specifically its pitching staff with the fifth worst ERA in baseball -- continues to struggle into the second half of 2013, the pitching prospect could become a big-league option later in the year.</p>
<p><strong>Prospect Tidbits:</strong> Selected 46th overall in the 2012 amateur draft, Colorado Rockies pitching prospect <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=butler001edw&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Eddie Butler</a></strong> is off to a hot start to his career. Beginning the 2013 season in A ball, he&#39;s allowed just 18 hits in 41 innings of work. If the Radford University alum continues to pitch like this he could make quick work of the minor leagues.....The Miami Marlins brought in a lot of minor league talent during last November&#39;s shocking trade with the Toronto Blue Jays. Despite that, prospects originally drafted by the club continue to see their values soar. Outfielder <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=yelich001chr&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Christian Yelich</a></strong> went 5-for-6 with two triples and a home run on May 8th. As <a href="http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130508&amp;content_id=46931376&amp;fext=.jsp&amp;vkey=news_milb&amp;sid=milb" target="_self">MiLB.com&#39;s Ashley Marshall</a> tells us, the performance also caught the attention of his manager. <em>&quot;It was one of the most impressive displays of a young hitter I have ever seen,&quot;</em> <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/barkean01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Andy Barkett</a></strong> said. It raised Yelich&#39;s average to .343 on the year.....Baltimore&#39;s <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bundydy01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Dylan Bundy</a></strong> reached the big leagues in his first full pro season in 2012 but his development in &#39;13 was halted by an injury. The bad news gives his Oklahoma high school opponent and friend <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=bradle000arc&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Archie Bradley</a></strong> a chance to close the gap between the two a little bit. After five dominating starts in the potent California League (43 strikeouts, 1.26 ERA in 28 2/3 innings), the Arizona Diamondbacks promoted the pitching prospect to Double-A and he&#39;s struck out 11 batters with a 1.13 ERA in eight innings over two starts.</p></div>

<li>We heard on Wednesday that the Yankees were <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/yankees-seeking-right-handed-hitters.html" target="_blank">looking for a right-handed bat</a>, and all signs point to that need being real. <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130504&amp;content_id=46569642&amp;notebook_id=46570008&amp;vkey=notebook_nyy&amp;c_id=nyy" target="_blank">Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports</a> that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nixja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jayson Nix</a></strong>, who sports a career .365 slugging percentage, has been taking balls at first base in case the team wants a righty to spell&#0160;<strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/overbly01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Lyle Overbay</a></strong>. Nix has held down third base&#0160;while&#0160;<strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/y/youklke01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Kevin Youkilis</a></strong>&#0160;works his way back, but the Yanks&#39; <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/yankees-acquire-chris-nelson.html" target="_blank">recent acquisition</a> of <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nelsoch01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Chris Nelson</a></strong> provides the club with another option at the hot corner.&#0160;</li>
<li>Yankees GM Brian Cashman deserves a ton of credit for finding value in Overbay, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hafnetr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Travis Hafner</a></strong>, and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wellsve01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Vernon Wells</a></strong>, <a href="https://twitter.com/JonHeymanCBS/status/330772258136154114" target="_blank">tweets</a> Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. There may be a flicker of light at the end of the tunnel for the scrambling Cashman, however. Hoch reports that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/novaiv01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Ivan Nova</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/teixema01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Mark Teixeira</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rodrial01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Alex Rodriguez</a></strong>, and Youkilis are all expected to report to the Yankees&#39; Tampa facility for rehab work. Meanwhile, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/grandcu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Curtis Granderson</a></strong> has been playing in extended spring training since Wednesday.</li>
<li>Count Paul Hoynes of the Plain Dealer as a fan of the Indians&#39; decision to trade for young pitcher <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bauertr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Trevor Bauer</a></strong> this offseason. Hoynes&#0160;<a href="http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2013/05/control_issues_cant_obscure_tr.html" target="_blank">writes</a>&#0160;that Bauer is ready to be a successful big leaguer this year, and may be the most talented pitching prospect in Cleveland since a certain <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sabatc.01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">CC Sabathia</a></strong>.</li>
<li>Of course, all three teams involved in <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/12/reds-acquire-shin-soo-choo.html" target="_blank">the deal</a> that brought Bauer to the Indians seem to have gotten what they wanted out of the deal (at least so far). In addition to Bauer, outfielder&#0160;<strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/stubbdr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Drew Stubbs</a></strong> is off to a fairly promising start for Cleveland, and currently sports a .284/.340/.420 line. The Indians have also enjoyed quality bullpen work from <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/alberma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Matt Albers</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/shawbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Bryan Shaw</a></strong>. Meanwhile, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/choosh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Shin-Soo Choo</a></strong> has clobbered the ball for the <strong>Reds</strong>, putting up a .330/.467/.541 line. He has done so while playing a passable, albeit&#0160;<a href="http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=cf&amp;stats=fld&amp;lg=all&amp;qual=y&amp;type=1&amp;season=2013&amp;month=0&amp;season1=2013&amp;ind=0&amp;team=0&amp;rost=0&amp;age=0&amp;filter=&amp;players=0" target="_blank">below average</a>, center field. And the <strong>Diamondbacks</strong> not only seem <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/04/olney-on-gregorius-.html" target="_blank">quite pleased</a> with shortstop prospect <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gregodi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Didi Gregorius</a></strong>, who is off to a .407/.448/.778 start in his first 30 plate appearances, but have received solid production from veteran reliever <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sippto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Tony Sipp</a></strong>.</li>
<li>Of course, not all deals turn out the way you hope. As ESPN&#39;s Buster Olney notes <a href="https://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN/status/330822856055341057" target="_blank">on Twitter</a>, <strong>Twins</strong> fans are (or should be) cringing at the hot start for the <strong>Brewers</strong>&#39; <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=gomezca01,gomez-007car&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Carlos Gomez</a></strong>. After emerging as a solid regular center fielder last season, Gomez is putting up excellent power, speed, and on-base numbers thus far in 2013. The Twins shipped Gomez to Milwaukee in return for <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hardyjj01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">J.J. Hardy</a></strong> after the 2009 season, and later sent Hardy to the <strong>Orioles</strong> to make way for the <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/09/twins-release-tsuyoshi-nishioka.html" target="_blank">failed</a> <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nishits01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Tsuyoshi Nishioka</a></strong> experiment. In exchange for Hardy, in turn, the Twins got a pair of young righties -- <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hoeyja02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jim Hoey</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=jacobs001bre&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Brett Jacobson</a></strong> -- who have failed to deliver any value to the club.</li>
<li>While the full ramifications of trades often take years to clarify, the <strong>Blue Jays</strong> could be wondering already how the <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/12/team-to-acquire-ra-dickey.html" target="_blank">recent trade</a> for <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/dicker.01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">R.A. Dickey</a></strong> will turn out. As <a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/statsinfo/post/_/id/65390/r-a-no-longer-really-awesome" target="_blank">Mark Simon of ESPN.com explains</a>, Dickey is failing to get hitters to chase pitches outside the zone, which could attributable in part to decreased knuckleball velocity. On the other side of the ledger, the <strong>Mets</strong> have surprisingly received incredible production from a seemingly minor piece of that deal -- catcher <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/buckjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">John Buck</a></strong> -- and were able to slot prospects <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=darnau001tra&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Travis d&#39;Arnaud</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=synder001noa&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Noah Syndergaard</a></strong> <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130204&amp;content_id=41380962&amp;c_id=nym" target="_blank">atop the team&#39;s prospect list</a>.</li>

<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>Let&#39;s start the last weekend in April with some notes from the National League:</p>
<ul>
<li>As expected, offseason acquisition <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/marcush01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Shaun Marcum</a></strong> has been activated to make his first start for the <strong>Mets</strong> today, the team announced <a href="https://twitter.com/Mets/status/328138184213004289" target="_blank">via Twitter</a>. In a corresponding move, the team optioned 26-year-old lefty <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/edginjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Josh Edgin</a></strong> to the minors, where he will try to sort out his poor start to the year. The Mets hope that Marcum, who came to New York on a one-year, $4MM deal, can stabilize the back of the team&#39;s rotation. While <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/harvema01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Matt Harvey</a></strong> has been lights out and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/niesejo01.shtml" target="_blank">Jon Niese</a></strong> has been solid, the remaining Mets starters have combined to allow well over five earned runs per nine innings.</li>
<li>Even with the mixed results from the team&#39;s starting staff, the Mets have gotten off to a fairly promising start. Meanwhile, the Nationals and Phillies have failed to live up to expectations in the early going. While acknowledging it is a long shot,&#0160;<a href="http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/mets/east_see_board_yf8sFTtG4C0GE9tubeMjaO?utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_content=Mets&amp;utm_source=dlvr.it" target="_blank">Ken Davidoff of the New York Post looks at</a>&#0160;what it would take for the Mets to seize any opening should the Nats and Phils continue to underperform. Many variables would have to break right for the Mets, says Davidoff. The club must hold things together and hope that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=darnau001tra&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Travis d&#39;Arnaud</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=wheele001zac&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Zack Wheeler</a></strong> arrive mid-summer, ready to contribute. (Of course, the d&#39;Arnaud side of this already looks unlikely given his <a href="http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/mets/east_see_board_yf8sFTtG4C0GE9tubeMjaO?utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_content=Mets&amp;utm_source=dlvr.it" target="_blank">approximately two-month injury timetable</a>.) If that happens, the Mets will face a test of their asserted willingness to take on salary -- and/or even deal young talent -- to make a run at a postseason appearance.</li>
<li>In the midst of what MLBTR&#39;s Mark Polishuk calls a <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/02/make-or-break-year-tim-lincecum.html" target="_blank">make or break year</a>, <strong>Giants</strong>&#0160;starter <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/linceti01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Tim Lincecum</a></strong> has put together two consecutive quality starts. As <a href="http://www.csnbayarea.com/blog/andrew-baggarly/lincecums-rare-seven-isnt-lucky-enough-giants" target="_blank">Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com writes</a>, last night Lincecum struck out nine Padres over seven innings, allowing just two runs. Lincecum, who currently stands ninth in Tim Dierkes&#39;s <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014-free-agent-power-rankings/" target="_blank">2014 Free Agent Power Rankings</a>, had struggled mightily in his first three outings. While he still ranks among baseball&#39;s worst in BB/9 (5.16), Lincecum has raised his strikeout rate to 9.71 K/9.</li>
<li>The <strong>Cardinals</strong> are not currently looking outside the organization to supplement their bullpen, <a href="http://mlbbuzz.yardbarker.com/blog/mlbbuzz/article/cards_not_looking_to_upgrade_bullpen_yet/13497101" target="_blank">writes Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports</a>. While the club waits to learn the fate of injured closer <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/motteja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jason Motte</a></strong>, it has been rewarded for handing larger roles to <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mujiced01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Edward Mujica</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kellyjo05.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Joe Kelly</a></strong>. GM John Mozeliak says that, while he is open to looking at the trade market, <em>&quot;that would not be in the near future.&quot;</em></li>
<li>Morosi also <a href="http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/atlanta-braves-justin-upton-has-been-best-player-on-planet-this-season-detroit-tigers-reed-johnson-brian-mcann-042613" target="_blank">addressed</a>&#0160;the subject of&#0160;<strong>Braves</strong> outfielder <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/u/uptonju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Justin Upton</a></strong>, wondering why exactly the <strong>Diamondbacks</strong> decided to trade him. While Diamondbacks managing general partner Ken Kendrick publicly called Upton <em>&quot;an enigma,&quot;</em>&#0160;and manager Kirk Gibson purportedly did not see eye-to-eye with the young slugger, Morosi says there was no single moment that apparently caused a rift. In case you missed it, Upton is off to something of a solid start for his new ballclub.</li>

<ul>
<li>Some fans are calling for a fire sale but Center points out that such a move wouldn&#39;t be prudent given how many Padres are underachieving.&#0160; &quot;<em>Even if the Padres started unloading players,
what would they get for what they have? Unfortunately, they couldn&#39;t
sell high in very many areas right now. Honestly, unloading might only
make it worse</em>,&quot; Center writes.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/headlch01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Chase Headley</a></strong> is perhaps the only Padre that would fetch a premium return on the trade market, though Headley himself has struggled (.547 OPS) since returning from the DL.&#0160; Center notes that Headley&#39;s struggles could actually help the Padres long-term since it would lower Headley&#39;s price on a possible extension.</li>
<li>Since Headley is under team control through next season, Center doesn&#39;t think the Friars need to decide on the third baseman until mid-2014.&#0160; That said, losing Headley &quot;might be a major blow to the new owners&#39; already weakening perception among fans.&quot;&#0160; <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/04/future-chase-headley-suitors.html" target="_blank">MLBTR&#39;s Tim Dierkes</a> recently looked at a few of the teams who might be interested in acquiring Headley should San Diego put him on the market this summer.</li>
<li>Center speculates that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/q/quentca01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Carlos Quentin</a></strong> could be open to waiving his no-trade clause if he was dealt to an AL club where he could serve as a designated hitter.&#0160; </li>
<li>Josh Byrnes was given permission by team management to pursue a trade for <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/u/uptonju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Justin Upton</a></strong> this past winter.&#0160; The <strong>Diamondbacks</strong> wanted a package from the Padres that would&#39;ve included Headley &quot;and more&quot; Major League talent, not only prospects.&#0160; Ultimately the D&#39;Backs had concerns about dealing Upton to a division rival and the talks led nowhere.&#0160; Any San Diego/Arizona trade, of course, contains some extra baggage given that Byrnes used to be the Diamondbacks&#39; GM and Kevin Towers is a former Padres general manager.</li>
<li>Firing Bud Black may not be the answer, as Center believes Black &quot;has the same ingredients&quot; as former Padres manager Bruce Bochy.&#0160; Despite Bochy&#39;s four division titles in 12 years as Padres&#39; manager, the club let him go to the Giants, where he has since won two World Series championships.</li>

<li>The <strong>Diamondbacks</strong> raised eyebrows with several of their offseason moves, including the decision to part with young arm <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bauertr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Trevor Bauer</a></strong> in the <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/12/reds-acquire-shin-soo-choo.html" target="_blank">deal</a> that brought shortstop prospect <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gregodi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Didi Gregorius</a></strong> to Arizona. While it is still far too early to evaluate this deal, ESPN&#39;s Buster Olney writes (<a href="http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/blog/_/name/olney_buster/id/9192689/didi-gregorius-provide-diamondbacks-unexpected-offensive-production-mlb" target="_blank">on Insider</a>)&#0160;that the most recent scouting returns on Gregorius are positive. Known as an excellent fielder, the glove-first Gregorius has been flashing improved strength and bat speed that could lead to more power than was previously expected. Off to a hot start to his big league career as he fills in for an injury-plagued Dbacks squad, the 23-year-old Gregorius certainly appears to be living up to Arizona GM Kevin Towers&#39; hopes in the early going. Towers said the club not only felt that Gregorius&#0160;<em>&quot;can really, really play short,&quot; </em>but saw&#0160;excellent bat speed and pitch recognition and believed he was <em>&quot;a tremendous kid&quot; </em>who has <em>&quot;got no fear.&quot;</em></li>
<li>Soon-to-be free agent hurler <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/garzama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Matt Garza</a></strong> of the <strong>Cubs</strong> ranks seventh on MLBTR&#39;s Tim Dierkes&#39;s latest <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/04/2014-free-agent-power-rankings.html" target="_blank">2014 Free Agent Power Rankings</a>&#0160;despite his prolonged absence from the majors. Garza appears to be set up for a mid-May return,&#0160;<a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-0420-bits-cubs-brewers-chicago-20130420,0,3217838.story?track=rss" target="_blank">reports Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune</a>. Much like <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hallaro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Roy Halladay</a></strong>, Garza&#39;s expected free agent haul could swing wildly based on 2013 results. While that is, of course, the case for any prospective free agent, it is possible to conceive of a wider band of results for a player like Garza. The 29-year-old features a very solid track record and relative youth, but is coming off of a long lull due to multiple injuries. Of course, Garza&#39;s play upon his return will also play a big role in whether the last-place Cubs will look to deal the pitcher to a contender (or, in the alternative, look to extend or re-sign him).</li>
<li>The&#0160;<strong>Phillies</strong>&#39; major offseason trade acquisition and&#0160;<a href="http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130418&amp;content_id=45138040&amp;notebook_id=45169538&amp;vkey=notebook_phi&amp;c_id=phi" target="_blank">now-former</a>&#0160;leadoff hitter&#0160;<strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/reverbe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Ben Revere</a>&#0160;</strong>has continued his inability to draw walks since joining the Phils.&#0160;In comments on Thursday,&#0160;Phillies GM Ruben Amaro bemoaned the team&#39;s inability to earn free passes, as <a href="http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130418&amp;content_id=45138040&amp;c_id=phi#45167760" target="_blank">reported by Todd Zolecki of MLB.com</a>. In fact, the club has the third-worst walk rate in baseball (5.9%), well below the league average of 8.1%. The comments have led to some consternation among observers, <a href="http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/04/19/ruben-amaro-cant-believe-the-phillies-arent-drawing-walks/" target="_blank">such as Bill Baer of NBC Sports</a>, who remember Amaro&#39;s <a href="http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/20130328_Phillies_continue_to_rely_more_on_scouting_than_sabermetrics.html" target="_blank">statement in January</a>: <em>&quot;I don&#39;t care about walks.
