Elmer Dessens Rumors

Mets Close To Bringing Back Dessens

4:10pm: Dessens' agent says the two sides are "getting closer" to a deal, according to an update from the FoxSports.com duo. 3:13pm: Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com report that the Mets are interested in bringing righthander Elmer Dessens back."We are talking," said Dessens' agent, Oscar Suarez. The 38-year-old Dessens was actually pretty good for the Amazin's last year, posting a 3.31 ERA with a 1.04 WHIP in 32.2 innings out of the bullpen. The Mets are the ninth team he has played for in his 13-year career.   Continue Reading

Odds & Ends: Yankees, Mets, Red Sox

Thursday linkage... La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune says the Pirates wanted Aaron Hicks or Danny Valencia from the Twins for Freddy Sanchez. LEN3 has a few other hot stove tidbits as well. ESPN's Keith Law finds the Giants' trade of Tim Alderson for Sanchez reasonable, due to "slippage in Alderson's stuff." Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe talks about how major additions such as Halladay, Adrian Gonzalez, or Victor Martinez would help the Red Sox. Via Twitter, ESPN's Amy K. Nelson heard from a source guessing that Gonzalez has a ten percent chance of being moved....   Continue Reading

Mets Sign Elmer Dessens

According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, the Mets signed pitcher Elmer Dessens to a minor league deal potentially worth $600K. Dessens, 37, pitched four innings for the Braves last year but spent most of the year in the Mexican League.   Continue Reading

Week In Review: 8/24 - 8/30

Sunday afternoon is here again... let's have a look back at some of the moves and rumors since last time: The injury-plagued Red Sox acquired Mark Kotsay to help compensate for their injuries. In exchange, the Braves received minor league outfielder Luis Sumoza. Nice acquisition by the Red Sox; Kotsay has been swinging a solid bat this season. The Twins acquired Eddie Guardado from Texas in exchange for minor league pitcher Mark Hamburger. Guardado has spent the majority of his career with Minnesota and provides a solid arm to the bullpen. To make room for him, they DFA'd Mike Lamb....   Continue Reading

Braves Sign Elmer Dessens

According to MLB.com's Mark Bowman, the Braves signed 37 year-old righty Elmer Dessens to join their rotation for September. Dessens posted a 4.03 ERA and 3.0 K/BB ratio in 105 innings in the Triple A Mexican League. Dessens had been released by the Pirates in spring due to a back injury.   Continue Reading

Random Rumors And Signings

We have a bunch of rumor-related tidbits today, and for now I'll put them into one post. There's a mini-controversy afoot regarding Cubs lefty Will Ohman. Ohman has indicated that the Cubs have been letting him pitch while hurt, and the Cubs contend that he never visited the trainer. No matter who you side with, Ohman's days in the organization are numbered. The Cubs indeed won the Scott Podsednik claim, but the White Sox want a legitimate prospect in return. I've heard Sean Gallagher mentioned. There's not much time for posturing here as the teams probably have until today or..   Continue Reading

Brewers, Dodgers Swap Clark and Dessens

According to Baseball Digest Daily, the Brewers have sent Brady Clark and cash considerations to the Dodgers for reliever Elmer Dessens. Clark, 34, can play all three outfield positions. Perhaps the Jason Repko injury inspired this trade. Clark had a nice year leading off for the Brewers in '05, but his power fell off last year. He did manage to increase his walk rate though. Clark makes $3.8MM this season in the last year of his contract. This enables Gabe Gross to make the Brewers, though they could stand to unload Kevin Mench or Geoff Jenkins. Dessens is 35; he..   Continue Reading

Royals Trade Dessens, Graffanino

Busy day for Dayton Moore, as he acquired all sorts of pitchers for his veterans. Let's start with his first trade: Elmer Dessens to the Dodgers for Blake Johnson, Julio Pimentel, Odalis Perez, and cash. If you're like me, you've never heard of Johnson or Pimentel, so let's start there. Pimentel and Johnson were ranked 16th and 17th among Dodgers prospects entering the 2006 season by Baseball America. Pimentel is a 20 year-old converted outfielder currently struggling in High Class A. Pimentel's teammate Blake Johnson is a 21 year-old righty who was drafted in the second round in '04. Just..   Continue Reading

Trade Rumor Roundup: 8 Days Left

To begin with, this just isn't true. With the Kearns deal and probably Soriano trade, the 2006 deadline just can't be classified as a dud. That honor belongs to 2005 for sure. The trading action never matches the buildup, but this year's still a good one. Read Ken Rosenthal's latest. The White Sox are in the Soriano game, the Rangers have interest in Luis Gonzalez, the Braves could add another reliever, Julio Lugo still might become a Blue Jay, and the Brewers look like sellers. In my opinion, some Brewers besides Carlos Lee that could be unloaded: Geoff Jenkins, Corey..   Continue Reading

Royals Rumors: Ryan Shealy

According to my Royals source, Dayton Moore has finished evaluating his roster and the team is about to become quite active in the trade market. You saw the Mark Redman rumor yesterday. Today MLBTradeRumors has learned of a possible deal in the works between the Rockies and Royals. The Rox are looking for relievers, and the Royals have Elmer Dessens and Jeremy Affeldt available. Mike MacDougal also has a chance to be dealt. The Royals would prefer to unload shortstop Angel Berroa and just one reliever to get first baseman Ryan Shealy. That way other relievers could snag more value..   Continue Reading
