Geoff Geary Rumors
By Mike Axisa [June 15, 2009 at 5:57pm CST]
Baseball America released this week's set of minor league transactions, and there was plenty of interesting movement. Let's break it down. The Indians signed reliever Mike Gosling to a minor league pact. The Twins released Gosling earlier this month. He last pitched in the big leagues for the Reds in 2007. The Tigers released Jason Tyner. You probably remember that the Brewers traded Tyner to the Tigers back in April for literally nothing. Marlins youngster Cameron Maybin was suspended for "aggressively arguing a call and bumping an umpire." The Astros removed Geoff Geary from the 40-man roster and outrighted him...

Some linkage as we enter the post-draft hangover, with more to come: Troy E. Renck at the Denver Post offers up his theories for the Rockies' reasoning behind choosing Tyler Matzek--a potentially tough sign. According to Ryan Divish at the Tacoma Tribune News, RHP Denny Stark, who was designated for assignment on Sunday by the Mariners, has cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to Triple-A Tacoma. So says Zachary Levine at the Houston Chronicle, the Astros have outrighted RHP Geoff Geary to Triple-A Round Rock. He can report there or opt to become a free agent. La Velle E. Neal...

ESPN's Jayson Stark has a new blog post up. The Astros plan to give Chris Johnson a chance to win the third base job, but Stark says Juan Uribe, Jose Bautista, and Jeff Baker "could still show up on their shopping list in the next two weeks." Stark heard "rumblings the Yankees are poking around again on Mike Cameron's availability." Back in December, the Yanks and Brewers were pretty close on a deal. Eric Milton is looking decent and appears to be the frontrunner for the Dodgers' fifth starter job (given Pedro Martinez's asking price). Will Ohman seeks a one-year,...

Troy Renck of the Denver Post has learned that Houston Astros left-handed pitcher Wandy Rodriguez and the franchise have reached a one-year, $2.6MM deal. Rodriguez, 30, went 9-7 with a 3.54 ERA in 2008. He can make an additional $50,000 for 180 innings pitched. The Astros also avoided arbitration with right-handed pitcher Geoff Geary. Geary will earn $1.7MM plus incentives. Geary, 32, went 2-3 with a 2.53 ERA in 55 appearances in 2008, his first season with the Astros.

According to MLB.com's Alyson Footer, Astros GM Ed Wade said the team has "ongoing dialogue" with both Wandy Rodriguez and Geoff Geary. They are the only arbitration-eligible Astros who have not yet settled. Rodriguez asked for $3MM and was offered $2.25MM. Geary asked for $2.1MM and was offered $1.425MM. If negotiations go well, Wade said there could be deals by "early next week."

The Astros filed figures for Tim Byrdak, Geoff Geary, and Wandy Rodriguez, but will continue negotiating in advance of the scheduled February hearings.

12:51pm: MLB.com's Jim Molony says Brocail, Geary, and Jose Valverde aren't going anywhere since the Astros are actually looking to add to their 'pen. 11:21am: ESPN's Peter Gammons says the Red Sox have been discussing Doug Brocail with the Astros. 9:57am: Boston's top priority at the trade deadline seems to be relief help, if anything. They were linked to several relievers this morning. Sean McAdam of the Providence Journal says the Sox "are interested again and expect expect to get back to the Royals on Ron Mahay." Mahay is generally believed to be unavailable. Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald...

11:40pm: Nick Cafardo suggests Doug Brocail might be the reliever the Red Sox are eyeing. 11:03pm: Footer says the Red Sox are more likely interested in Geoff Geary than Miguel Tejada. She doesn't expect Geary to be traded, since as she previously noted the Astros are looking to acquire a reliever. 8:47pm: No one is quite sure why, but the Astros are still acting like buyers. The latest example comes from ESPN's Buster Olney, who says Ed Wade is looking for a "high profile, experienced reliever." MLB.com's Alyson Footer concurs, but her sources put the chance of a deal around...

A major trade was struck tonight, as the Phillies acquired Brad Lidge and Eric Bruntlett for Michael Bourn, Geoff Geary, and Mike Costanzo. The makings of this deal surfaced earlier today, as it was revealed the Astros had interest in Francisco Cordero. The 'Stros had been talking about bringing in a center fielder, though no one expected Bourn. Phillies fans have to be happy to hear that the acquisition will allow Brett Myers to move back into the starting rotation. We were hearing just yesterday that Myers would remain in the pen. Perhaps Pat Gillick surveyed the market for a..
