I

for by the Yankees is a great experience and I’m very excited to get

<ul>
<li>First baseman <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rizzoan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Anthony Rizzo</a></strong> has a new seven-year, $41MM deal with the <strong>Cubs</strong>, but pitcher <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/samarje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jeff Samardzija</a></strong> says he isn&#39;t ready to talk contract with the club, writes <a href="http://blogs.suntimes.com/cubs/2013/05/chicago_cubs_jeff_samardzija_ready_to_talk_.html" target="_blank">Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times</a>. &#0160;<em>&quot;Absolutely not,&quot;</em> said the pitcher when asked if he&#39;s looking to hammer out an extension. <em>&quot;Nope. This is a great team, really coming around right now, playing great baseball. I&#39;m just really looking to keep this going. It&#39;s fun to play with these guys.&quot; &#0160;</em>Samardzija, 28, will have four years of Major League service after the season. &#0160;This is just a theory of mine, but having been lured away from football in &#39;06 with a $10MM contract, Samardzija has more financial security at this point in his career than most players, and continuing to bet on his talent will enable him to maximize his next contract.</li>
<li><strong>Giants</strong> GM Brian Sabean told <a href="http://www.csnbayarea.com/blog/andrew-baggarly/extra-baggs-sabean-evaluates-giants-wants-no-6-hitter-step" target="_blank">Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com</a> that he hasn&#39;t been in touch with former closer <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wilsobr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Brian Wilson</a></strong> lately. &#0160;Sabean says that he doesn&#39;t know how Wilson is throwing but has heard The Beard is <em>&quot;working out like a fiend&quot;</em> and is <em>&quot;going to try to showcase himself over the All-Star break or thereabouts.&quot;</em></li>
<li>The <strong>Phillies</strong> issued a statement regarding <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hallaro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Roy Halladay</a></strong> today: <em>&quot;Roy had successful shoulder surgery yesterday. He had an arthroscopic evaluation and underwent debridement of his labrum and rotator cuff as well as removal of an inflamed bursa. &#0160;He&#39;ll begin a progressive rehabilitation program and if all goes well, he may possibly begin a throwing program in 6-8 weeks.&quot; &#0160;</em>The 36-year-old will be eligible for free agency after the season. &#0160;Scrambling for depth in the wake of the injuries to Halladay and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lannajo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">John Lannan</a></strong>, <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/phillies-to-sign-carlos-zambrano.html" target="_blank">the Phillies signed</a> <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/z/zambrca01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Carlos Zambrano</a></strong> to a minor league deal yesterday with a July 1st opt-out date.</li>
<li>In other NL East injury news, the <strong>Braves</strong> announced reliever <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/ventejo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jonny Venters</a></strong> had the second Tommy John procedure of his career today. &#0160;The 28-year-old will be arbitration eligible for the second time after the season, with an expected salary similar to this year&#39;s $1.625MM.</li>
<li>A clerical error could have enabled <strong>Giants</strong> reliever <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/affelje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jeremy Affeldt</a></strong> to pocket an extra $500K a few years back, but he wasn&#39;t willing to pocket the money, reports <a href="http://www.sfchronicle.com/giants/article/Why-Affeldt-turned-down-500-000-4516372.php?t=34be181634999e0292" target="_blank">Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle</a> via Affeldt&#39;s book, &quot;To Stir a Movement.&quot; &#0160;Affeldt believes his subsequent contract with the Giants went smoothly partly because of that decision. &#0160;</li>

<li>The nine Asian-born pitchers who have pitched in the big leagues this
year have combined to post numbers similar to a typical <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/verlaju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Justin Verlander</a></strong>
 season, <a href="http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/maybe-its-time-we-stop-underrating-pitchers-from-asian-countries/" target="_blank">Dave Cameron of FanGraphs says</a>.
 Those nine pitchers have 241 1/3 innings pitched so far in 2013, with a
 2.91 ERA, 9.6 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/darviyu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Yu  Darvish</a></strong> has been a big part of that, of course, but Hyun-Jin Ryu, Hisashi
Iwakuma, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kurodhi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Hiroki  Kuroda</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/tazawju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Junichi  Tazawa</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/u/ueharko01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Koji  Uehara</a></strong> have also pitched
 well. The past struggles of pitchers like <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/matsuda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Daisuke Matsuzaka</a></strong> and Hideki
Irabu have allowed today&#39;s Asian-born pitchers to fly under the radar
somewhat, Cameron argues, and he wonders whether pitchers from overseas
leagues might be undervalued in the market. Specifically, he says,
emphasis on fastball velocity and breaking balls may cause teams to
undervalue pitchers with great splitters or changeups.</li>
<li>Free agency has become &quot;<em>a used car lot cluttered with lemons</em>,&quot; with only a few bargains to be found, <a href="http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mlb/news/20130507/free-agents-josh-hamilton-bj-upton/index.html" target="_blank">Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated argues</a>,
 citing the examples of <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hamiljo03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Josh  Hamilton</a></strong> (Angels), <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/u/uptonbj01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">B.J. Thus
 far, Hamilton and Upton have failed to produce with their new teams,
and Greinke is hurt. In the past four seasons, Verducci notes, there
have been 24 free-agent contracts worth $35MM or more. Most of those
have turned out badly, and some (such as <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bayja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jason Bay</a></strong>&#39;s deal with the Mets)
 have looked bad almost immediately. That means that &quot;<em>win[ning] the winter</em>&quot;
 by signing the biggest-name free agents isn&#39;t all it&#39;s cracked up to
be, as the 2012 Marlins can attest. This year&#39;s Angels and Dodgers have
struggled out of the gate, and so have the Blue Jays (who had a big
offseason mostly driven by trades). </li>

Of course, Middlebrooks himself has struggled this year, hitting just .195/.232/.281.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/peavyja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jake Peavy</a></strong> does not have a no-trade clause in his new contract with the <strong>White Sox</strong>, and he doesn&#39;t need one, <a href="http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/manny-machado-balitmore-orioles-rising-young-star-050713" target="_blank">Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports</a>. &quot;<em>I told (GM) Rick Hahn that if he didn’t trade me before spring training was over, that was good enough for me</em>,&quot; says Peavy, pointing out that it&#39;s unlikely he will be traded if the White Sox are contending.</li>
<li>Rosenthal also notes that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bumgama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Madison Bumgarner</a></strong>&#39;s contract with the <strong>Giants</strong> could be one of the most team-friendly in baseball. Bumgarner, 23, would have been eligible for free agency after the 2016 season, but his new deal contains cheap team options that can allow the Giants to carry him through 2019. </li>
<li>The <strong>Brewers </strong>have assigned <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=rodrifr03,rodrifr04,rodrig017fra&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Francisco Rodriguez</a></strong> to Class A+ Brevard County, <a href="http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/206455871.html" target="_blank">Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel notes</a>. Rodriguez will make three relief appearances there, then head to Triple-A Nashville. The Brewers must promote Rodriguez to the majors by May 17, or he can become a free agent. Rodriguez posted a 4.38 ERA with 9.0 K/9 and 3.9 BB/9 in 78 appearances with the Brewers in 2012.</li>

<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/betemwi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Wilson Betemit</a></strong>, Orioles: $3.2MM option vests with 324 plate appearances (combined 700 between 2012 and 2013). &#0160;Betemit suffered a PCL tear during the last week of Spring Training, keeping him out of action until at least mid-May. &#0160;When he returns, he figures to see less action than he did last year thanks to <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/machama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Manny Machado</a></strong>.&#0160;</li>

<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hallaro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Roy Halladay</a></strong>, Phillies: $20MM option vests with 259 innings pitched (combined 415 innings pitched between &#39;12 and &#39;13). &#0160;So far, Halladay has logged 28 and 1/3 innings through five April starts but the 259 mark remains a longshot. &#0160;However, it&#39;s worth nothing that Halladay has come close to that figure twice in the last six years (2008, 246 IP; 2010, 250.2 IP) and surpassed it once in his career (2003, 266 IP).</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/myersbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Brett Myers</a></strong>, Indians: $8MM option vests with 200 innings pitched in 2013 and a passed physical after the season. &#0160;Myers is expected to miss most of May due to tendinitis and a mild ligament sprain in his right elbow. &#0160;So far, the right-hander has 21 and 1/3 innings to his credit in 2013.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/z/zitoba01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Barry Zito</a></strong>, Giants: $18MM option vests with 200 innings pitched. &#0160;Zito has 23 and 2/3 innings so far through the month of April and will make his fifth start of the year tonight against the Padres.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/santajo02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Johan Santana</a></strong>, Mets: His $25MM option could have vested with 215 innings pitched or winning the 2013 Cy Young&#0160;Award, but he won&#39;t have a chance at that thanks to a season-ending tear in his pitching shoulder.</li>
</ul>
<p>It&#39;s also worth noting that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/liriafr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Francisco Liriano</a></strong> has a $8MM club option for 2014 with the Pirates, but it can vest at any of three levels, $5MM, $6MM, or $8MM, based on the number of days he is not on the DL this year with a recurrence of his right arm injury. &#0160;It&#39;s not known how many days the hurler must steer clear of right arm trouble in order to trigger each level of his option, however. &#0160;Liriano has yet to take the hill in 2013, but he is expected to make his big league debut on May 10th vs. the Mets. &#0160;</p></div>

<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>Let&#39;s start the last weekend in April with some notes from the National League:</p>
<ul>
<li>As expected, offseason acquisition <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/marcush01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Shaun Marcum</a></strong> has been activated to make his first start for the <strong>Mets</strong> today, the team announced <a href="https://twitter.com/Mets/status/328138184213004289" target="_blank">via Twitter</a>. In a corresponding move, the team optioned 26-year-old lefty <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/edginjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Josh Edgin</a></strong> to the minors, where he will try to sort out his poor start to the year. The Mets hope that Marcum, who came to New York on a one-year, $4MM deal, can stabilize the back of the team&#39;s rotation. While <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/harvema01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Matt Harvey</a></strong> has been lights out and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/niesejo01.shtml" target="_blank">Jon Niese</a></strong> has been solid, the remaining Mets starters have combined to allow well over five earned runs per nine innings.</li>
<li>Even with the mixed results from the team&#39;s starting staff, the Mets have gotten off to a fairly promising start. Meanwhile, the Nationals and Phillies have failed to live up to expectations in the early going. While acknowledging it is a long shot,&#0160;<a href="http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/mets/east_see_board_yf8sFTtG4C0GE9tubeMjaO?utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_content=Mets&amp;utm_source=dlvr.it" target="_blank">Ken Davidoff of the New York Post looks at</a>&#0160;what it would take for the Mets to seize any opening should the Nats and Phils continue to underperform. Many variables would have to break right for the Mets, says Davidoff. The club must hold things together and hope that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=darnau001tra&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Travis d&#39;Arnaud</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=wheele001zac&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Zack Wheeler</a></strong> arrive mid-summer, ready to contribute. (Of course, the d&#39;Arnaud side of this already looks unlikely given his <a href="http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/mets/east_see_board_yf8sFTtG4C0GE9tubeMjaO?utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_content=Mets&amp;utm_source=dlvr.it" target="_blank">approximately two-month injury timetable</a>.) If that happens, the Mets will face a test of their asserted willingness to take on salary -- and/or even deal young talent -- to make a run at a postseason appearance.</li>
<li>In the midst of what MLBTR&#39;s Mark Polishuk calls a <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/02/make-or-break-year-tim-lincecum.html" target="_blank">make or break year</a>, <strong>Giants</strong>&#0160;starter <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/linceti01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Tim Lincecum</a></strong> has put together two consecutive quality starts. As <a href="http://www.csnbayarea.com/blog/andrew-baggarly/lincecums-rare-seven-isnt-lucky-enough-giants" target="_blank">Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com writes</a>, last night Lincecum struck out nine Padres over seven innings, allowing just two runs. Lincecum, who currently stands ninth in Tim Dierkes&#39;s <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014-free-agent-power-rankings/" target="_blank">2014 Free Agent Power Rankings</a>, had struggled mightily in his first three outings. While he still ranks among baseball&#39;s worst in BB/9 (5.16), Lincecum has raised his strikeout rate to 9.71 K/9.</li>
<li>The <strong>Cardinals</strong> are not currently looking outside the organization to supplement their bullpen, <a href="http://mlbbuzz.yardbarker.com/blog/mlbbuzz/article/cards_not_looking_to_upgrade_bullpen_yet/13497101" target="_blank">writes Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports</a>. While the club waits to learn the fate of injured closer <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/motteja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jason Motte</a></strong>, it has been rewarded for handing larger roles to <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mujiced01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Edward Mujica</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kellyjo05.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Joe Kelly</a></strong>. GM John Mozeliak says that, while he is open to looking at the trade market, <em>&quot;that would not be in the near future.&quot;</em></li>
<li>Morosi also <a href="http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/atlanta-braves-justin-upton-has-been-best-player-on-planet-this-season-detroit-tigers-reed-johnson-brian-mcann-042613" target="_blank">addressed</a>&#0160;the subject of&#0160;<strong>Braves</strong> outfielder <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/u/uptonju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Justin Upton</a></strong>, wondering why exactly the <strong>Diamondbacks</strong> decided to trade him. While Diamondbacks managing general partner Ken Kendrick publicly called Upton <em>&quot;an enigma,&quot;</em>&#0160;and manager Kirk Gibson purportedly did not see eye-to-eye with the young slugger, Morosi says there was no single moment that apparently caused a rift. In case you missed it, Upton is off to something of a solid start for his new ballclub.</li>

        <summary>Here&#39;s a look at today&#39;s minor moves.. Right-hander Andrew Kown has been released from the Fresno Grizzlies (the Giants&#39; Triple-A affiliate), the team announced on Twitter. The 30-year-old Kown has a 4.75 ERA in 396 Triple-A innings and has spent time with the Tigers and Nationals in addition to the Giants. The Indians acquired catcher Chris Wallace from the Astros in exchange for minor league left-hander Eric Berger, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com. The addition of Wallace gives the Tribe catching depth following injuries to Lou Marson and Carlos Santana. Berger, who turns 27 next week, had a 5.27...</summary>

had [in Atlanta] to start off the season, maybe not&#39; sometimes players
need a change of scenery for it to happen</em>,&quot; Hall said.&#0160; &quot;<em>I mean this
was just two different teams that had two different needs and it worked
out well for both, not to mention we still have four prospects that
we&#39;re going to be dealing with in the next few years</em>.&quot;

creating if a 25-year-old with his kind of ability can’t succeed in it
anymore?&quot; Piecoro asks.</li>
<li>While breaking down <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/linceti01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Tim Lincecum</a></strong>&#39;s struggles, <a href="http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-triangle/post/_/id/58069/whats-wrong-with-tim-lincecum" target="_blank">Grantland&#39;s Jonah Keri</a> noted that the success of the <strong>Giants</strong>&#39; starting rotation has obscured the team&#39;s lack of pitching depth.&#0160; The Giants may need to explore a trade for a new starter later this season if Lincecum can&#39;t turn things around.&#0160; I tabbed 2013 as a <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/02/make-or-break-year-tim-lincecum.html" target="_blank">Make Or Break Season</a> for Lincecum since he&#39;ll need to regain his old form in order to fetch a nice free agent contract this winter.</li>

</ul>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Needs Addressed</span></p>
<p>General manager Brian Sabean clearly placed an emphasis on retaining the group that won the Giants&#39; second World Series title in two years. That line of thinking is exemplified by the Spring Training blockbuster (no pun intended) extension for Buster Posey. The 2012 NL MVP signed an eight-year, $159MM contract that will keep him in San Francisco through his age-36 season.
<a class="asset-img-link" href="http://rotoauthority.blogs.com/.a/6a00d834515b9a69e2017d42b860cd970c-pi" style="float: right;"><img alt="Posey" class="asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d834515b9a69e2017d42b860cd970c" src="http://rotoauthority.blogs.com/.a/6a00d834515b9a69e2017d42b860cd970c-200wi" style="padding: 3px; width: 200px; margin: 15px 15px 15px 15px; border: 2px solid #CCCCCC;" title="Posey" /></a>As is the case with any eight-year deal, the contract carries with it significant risk. The Giants undoubtedly believe that Posey is capable of sustaining his 2012 production and chose to lock him up now rather than next offseason, when he&#39;d have a chance at breaking <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mauerjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Joe Mauer</a></strong>&#39;s record for catcher contracts. Posey and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cainma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Matt Cain</a></strong> have become the faces of the franchise, and Sabean spent to ensure the pair&#39;s best years come in black and orange.</p>
<p>Angel Pagan, Marco Scutaro, Jeremy Affeldt and Melky Cabrera each also played large roles in the Giants&#39; 2012 success, but all four entered the offseason eligible for free agency.&#0160;</p>
<p>Pagan&#39;s four-year, $40MM contract is a risk for a speed-oriented player entering his 30s, but his play over the past four seasons justifies the spend. Even if he regresses in the final year of the contract, he should be able to at least live up to -- if not exceed -- its value.</p>
<p>On the other hand, Sabean paid a steep price for to retain Scutaro and Affeldt. Scutaro looked like a replacement-level player prior to his trade to the Giants, and it&#39;s fair to assume he won&#39;t repeat the gaudy .366 BABIP that followed. Affeldt has proven to be a strong setup man, but paying top-of-the-market value for the age 34-36 seasons of a reliever with declining velocity is questionable at best.</p>
<p>Sabean doubled-down on that thinking by giving Santiago Casilla a three-year, $15MM extension. Casilla is younger than Affeldt but comes with some command issues. Paying $11MM per season for a pair of mid-30s setup men strikes me as an unnecessary risk.</p>
<p>The signing of Andres Torres brings back a veteran with excellent defensive skills that helped the Giants to a World Series title in 2010. The $2MM price tag is more than reasonable and gives manager Bruce Bochy a number of strong defenders in Torres, Pagan and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/blancgr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Gregor Blanco</a></strong>. The importance of that defensive prowess in the outfield can&#39;t be understated, given the amount of ground that needs to be covered at AT&amp;T Park.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Questions Remaining</span></p>
<p>Cain, Bumgarner and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/vogelry01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Ryan Vogelsong</a></strong> combine to form a strong 1-2-3 punch atop the rotation, but <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/linceti01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Tim Lincecum</a></strong>&#39;s struggles have persisted into the 2013 season. &quot;The Freak&quot; has lost nearly four miles per hour off his fastball from his first Cy Young campaign, and his command problems are even more concerning than the velocity drop. At this point, I have to imagine that the they&#39;d be thrilled to get 175 league-average innings out of the former ace, but that&#39;s looking more and more unlikely.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/z/zitoba01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Barry Zito</a></strong> was dominant on Wednesday, but there&#39;s the feeling that a meltdown is always around the corner with the soft-tosser. Starting pitching could become a big area of need for this team and cause fans to look back at the <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=wheele001zac&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Zack Wheeler</a></strong>-for-<strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/beltrca01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Carlos Beltran</a></strong> swap of 2011 with heavy hearts.</p>
<p>Shortstop and first base are both areas of concern as well. Defensively proficient as he is, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/crawfbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Brandon Crawford</a></strong> offers little with the bat. This is a big year for <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/beltbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Brandon Belt</a></strong>, as he&#39;ll need to prove that he&#39;s a capable bat that can help a team lacking in power bats. Midseason acquisition <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pencehu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Hunter Pence</a></strong> will also need to rebound after hitting a mere .219/.287/.384 for the Giants down the stretch and .210/.231/.290 in the playoffs.</p>
<p>Should the offense flounder, I imagine the Giants will be in on names like <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/willijo03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Josh Willingham</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/morneju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Justin Morneau</a></strong> and whatever other corner bats emerge on the trade market.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Deal of Note</span></p>
<p>Brian Wilson&#0160;has long been a fixture in Giants culture, but the team faced a tough decision on him this offseason. &quot;The Beard&quot; underwent Tommy John surgery after making just two appearances last season, and the Giants wisely chose not to tender him a contract and pay him at least $6.8MM in 2013.</p>
<p>The Giants had interest in bringing Wilson back on a minor league deal, but he preferred to seek out a Major League opportunity. After failing to impress the Mets in a January audition, Wilson has decided to <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/03/brian-wilson-wont-sign-until-after-season.html" target="_blank">wait until he&#39;s 100 percent healthy</a> before auditioning for teams again.</p>
<p>Back in October, Wilson&#0160;<a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/10/west-links-adams-wilson-a-rod-dbacks-rangers.html" target="_blank">stated</a> that if the Giants <em>&quot;paid me to be me, I will be.&quot;&#0160;</em>The decision not to meet that asking price or even offer a smaller Major League deal months later has proven to be wise, but it was likely a difficult decision for Sabean and his staff to make.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Overview</span></p>
<p>The Giants have a strong, albeit top-heavy rotation backed by a solid bullpen. If they can receive league-average innings from Lincecum and/or Zito, they&#39;ll be in the mix until the end. As has become the norm in San Francisco, the offense doesn&#39;t look overpowering, but the middle of the lineup is strong. The new-look Dodgers and Diamondbacks pose threats, but San Francisco looks poised for another playoff push.</p>

        <summary>Giants lefty Barry Zito has thrown 14 scoreless innings across two starts to begin his 2013 season. Why does this matter? As Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News notes, Zito will trigger an $18MM option for 2014 if he reaches 200 innings this season. Furthermore, Zito would have the option of taking a $3.5MM buyout and becoming a free agent instead. When I mentioned this a week ago, I didn&#39;t give much thought to the idea of Zito reaching 200 innings -- he hasn&#39;t done it since his 2006 contract year with the A&#39;s. But now, he has...</summary>

<p>When I <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/04/players-with-opt-out-clauses.html" target="_blank">mentioned this a week ago</a>, I didn&#39;t give much thought to the idea of Zito reaching 200 innings -- he hasn&#39;t done it since his 2006 contract year with the A&#39;s. &#0160;But now, he has 14 innings in the books for his first two starts. &#0160;Here are his innings pitched per start numbers as a Giant:</p>
<ul>
<li>2007: 5.93</li>
<li>2008: 5.63</li>
<li>2009: 5.82</li>
<li>2010: 6.01</li>
<li>2011: 5.52</li>
<li>2012: 5.76</li>
</ul>
<p>If we generously assume that Zito will make 33 starts this year, he needs 186 over his final 31, for an average of exactly six innings per start from here on out. &#0160;Zito is capable of pulling this off, but I would not bet on it.</p>
<p>If Zito does reach 200 innings, Kawakami suggests the 2014 option triggering would be a good thing for the Giants. &#0160;That&#39;s because the Giants would have to pay a hefty $7MM buyout if Zito does not reach the threshold, so it&#39;s really a marginal cost of $11MM. &#0160;He makes a good point. &#0160;</p>
<p>Kawakami also notes that Zito could choose $3.5MM and free agency, instead. &#0160;If Zito could demand a two-year, $26.5MM deal (as <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/dempsry01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Ryan Dempster</a></strong> did), plus the $3.5MM buyout, would that be better than just taking the $18MM for one year? &#0160;Yes, unless Zito is relatively certain he could get more than $12MM for his age 37 season in 2015. &#0160;If Zito does opt for free agency, I think the Giants would be unlikely to make a qualifying offer.</p>
<p>Zito&#39;s agent, Scott Boras, will be a big factor if he reaches 200 innings. &#0160;Boras is likely to push for free agency, as he has so many times before in these situations.</p></div>

 that if the Dodgers don&#39;t do well in 2013, they could try to hire <strong>Rays </strong>GM Andrew Friedman. Here are more notes from the West divisions.</p>
<ul>
<li>The <strong>Mariners</strong>&#39; decision to keep <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bayja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jason  Bay</a></strong> and <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/03/mariners-designate-casper-wells-for-assignment.html" target="_blank">designate</a> <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wellsca01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Casper  Wells</a></strong> for assignment doesn&#39;t make sense, <a href="http://www.ussmariner.com/2013/03/31/jason-bay-and-casper-wells-facts/" target="_blank">Jeff Sullivan of USS Mariner says</a>.
Sullivan notes that Wells is younger, had four years of team control remaining, and has recently been the better player on both offense and defense -- and the Mariners will likely lose him for virtually nothing. &quot;<em>Wells, probably, is going to end up getting traded to a team with a
thin outfield in exchange for a non-roster barely-prospect</em>,&quot; Sullivan
says. Sullivan also points out that Wells was one of the key players in the Doug
Fister deal with the <strong>Tigers</strong>. The Tigers already looked like clear winners in that trade, but it&#39;s even clearer now.</li>
<li>The <strong>Giants</strong>&#39; signing of <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/poseybu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Buster Posey</a></strong> to an eight-year, $159MM contract demonstrates the inequities between the Giants and the <strong>Athletics</strong>, <a href="http://www.sfgate.com/athletics/article/Posey-deal-shows-A-s-income-constraints-4397524.php#ixzz2P9qLcqpw" target="_blank">Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle writes</a>. The Giants have opposed the Athletics&#39; move to San Jose. &quot;<em>It&#39;s more than mildly ironic that the Giants granted a single player a
contract that exceeds the A&#39;s entire payroll by a factor of three</em>,&quot; says San
Jose City Councilman Sam Liccardo.</li>
<li>The trade of <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wellsve01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Vernon Wells</a></strong> to the Yankees gave the <strong>Angels </strong>additional payroll flexibility, <a href="http://aldengonzalez.mlblogs.com/2013/03/31/previewing-the-2013-season/" target="_blank">Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com writes</a>. The deal leaves the Angels about $6MM under the luxury tax threshold, Gonzalez reports. </li>

<p><strong>7:31pm: </strong>The Giants have extended the contracts of general manager Brian Sabean and manager <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bochybr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Bruce Bochy</a></strong> through 2016, according to a team release. Dollar figures for the two contracts have not been released.</p>
<p>The Giants won World Series in 2010 and 2012, so it&#39;s not surprising the team would want to keep Sabean and Bochy in the fold. Sabean took over as general manager of the Giants in 1996 and has been on the job longer than any other active GM. Bochy has managed the Giants since 2007. </p>
<p>The team <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/12/giants-exercise-options-on-sabean-bochy.html" target="_blank">exercised its 2014 options</a> on both Sabean and Bochy last December. Posey, a former shortstop, could be moved to third or first in as few as two years, notes Olney. <p>The 26-year-old gets a $7MM signing bonus as part of the deal and will receive a $3MM buyout if his option year is not triggered. The hefty contract extension also provides the catcher with a full no-trade clause. &#0160;The breakdown has Posey earning $3MM in 2013, $10.5MM in 2014, $16.5MM in &#39;15, $20MM in &#39;16, and $21.4MM per season from 2017-2021.</p>
<p>In his young MLB career, Posey has won the Rookie of the Year award, two World Series titles, and the 2012 National League MVP award. &#0160;Across four seasons, Posey owns a&#0160;.314/.380/.503 batting line and is coming off of a season where he belted a career high 24 homers. &#0160;</p>
<p>Posey&#39;s contract covers his three remaining years of arbitration and five years of free agency, plus an option that could take care of a sixth free agency year. &#0160;Before this contract, no catcher had earned more than <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/napolmi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Mike Napoli</a></strong>&#39;s $20.8MM for his arbitration years, and Posey nearly triples that. &#0160;His $57MM arbitration total is third-highest all-time, behind <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/howarry01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Ryan Howard</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/linceti01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Tim Lincecum</a></strong>. &#0160;Posey&#39;s contract is the largest deal ever given to a catcher and second in dollars to <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mauerjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Joe Mauer</a></strong>&#39;s eight-year, $184MM deal with the Twins. &#0160;The contract also marks a record guarantee for a player with fewer than four years of service time. &#0160;The previous holder of that distinction was <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/heltoto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Todd Helton</a></strong>, who had an eleven-year deal worth $151.45MM.</p>
<p>The Giants&#39; deal with Posey represents their second consecutive year with a major contract extension completed just prior to Opening Day. &#0160;Last year, right-hander <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cainma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Matt Cain</a></strong>&#0160;- also represented by CAA&#39;s Jeff Berry - cashed in with a five-year, $112.5MM pact. &#0160;For Berry, this deal is just the latest on a resume full of lucrative extensions. &#0160;As <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/agencydatabase" target="_blank">MLBTR&#39;s Extension Tracker</a> shows, he has recently ironed out deals for clients <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/buehrma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Mark Buehrle</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/peavyja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jake Peavy</a></strong>, and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/danksjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">John Danks</a></strong>.</p>
