Ian Snell Rumors
By Sarah Green [September 20, 2008 at 2:52pm CST]
Buster Olney's latest offering is packed full of links: Bernie Miklasz notes that the Cardinals have only three starting pitchers (Adam Wainwright, Todd Wellemeyer, and Joel Pineiro) locked up for next year (he's not expecting Chris Carpenter to contribute in 2009), and no prospects waiting in the wings. His solution? Pry open owner Bill DeWitt's wallet, "and please, no el cheapo deals for rehabbing pitchers, medically risky pitchers, broken-down pitchers." The Pirates have it a little bit tougher. According to pitching coach Jeff Andrews, it consists of Paul Maholm and "a blank sheet." Here's one vote for adding Ian Snell,...

Pirates president Frank Coonelly chatted with fans at MLB.com today. Highlights: The Pedro Alvarez drama will not prevent the Pirates from drafting a Scott Boras client in the future. Coonelly's history with Boras was not a factor in the negotiations. Coonelly is confident Alvarez will be a Pirate soon, and doesn't think the contract can be voided. He adds, "under no circumstance could Alvarez be granted free agency." The Pirates will not be spending $10MM+ per year on a free agent starting pitcher. Coonelly insists the Pirates were not shopping Ian Snell at the trade deadline. Jayson Stark and Jon...

Here's the latest column from SI.com's Jon Heyman. Cubs prospect Felix Pie has seen his value slip this year. He didn't hit in 70 plate appearances with the big club. His Triple A OPS slipped from .973 in '07 to .780 this year. You have to wonder if the Cubs will remove the untouchable tag this winter. Heyman says there was never any negotiations between the Yankees and Scott Boras regarding Gerrit Cole. The Yanks would've offered $4MM+, but Cole preferred college (at his father's urging). Heyman confirms Ian Snell was available before the trade deadline. The Pirates wanted pitching...

ESPN's Jayson Stark has a new Rumblings and Grumblings column up. Some teams won't go anywhere near Manny Ramirez given the way he exited Boston. Opinions range on whether he'll get two, three, or four years this winter. Will he turn it off again after signing a long-term deal? And will other players use the same strategy to escape their contracts? The Rays are likely to stand pat, despite recent injuries. Rockies players haven't hit the waiver wire yet; Dan O'Dowd plans to wait until month's end. Stark wonders whether the Cards could win a claim on Brian Fuentes. Not...

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post published a mailbag today with some good rumors. The Pirates wanted Franklin Morales, Esmil Rogers, and Chris Nelson for Ian Snell. Can't blame 'em for asking. Last winter, the A's asked for Ubaldo Jimenez in a deal for Dan Haren. As good as Haren's been, the Rockies still have to be happy they passed. Renck doesn't see the Rox picking up Shawn Chacon - reportedly he has not been working out over the past month. Renck reveals that Todd Helton asked the Rockies upon signing his megadeal that money not be deferred. Nonetheless...

The Rockies and Pirates were in discussions about starter Ian Snell before the non-waiver trade deadline, but Pittsburgh's asking price of Franklin Morales was to high for the Rox to match, effectively killing the deal. After another bad outing from one of their starters this week, however, and knowing they will look for a fifth starter via the waiver wire, the Rockies may have to revisit the Snell talks, as Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post thinks he would've been a "tantalizing option;" Renck also mentions Josh Fogg as an alternative for the Rox. Fogg pitched for the Rockies...

8:39am: SI.com's Jon Heyman says the Mets have "kicked around" the idea of acquiring Ian Snell from the Pirates and using him in relief for the rest of the year. Snell is signed through 2010 with club options for '11 and '12. It's tough to see the Bucs moving him, even in an off year. 8:13am: According to David Lennon of Newsday, the Mets are not finding a deal to their liking for a reliever or outfielder. They've put pretty much all of their good prospects off-limits - Fernando Martinez, Jon Niese, Eddie Kunz or Bobby Parnell. Players such as...

Baseball Prospectus' Will Carroll has plenty of rumors in his latest post. Pat Gillick "doesn't seem that interested" in going back to work for the Mariners. One team asked the Blue Jays to include players to be named later on both sides of an A.J. Burnett deal, to serve as a balance for the pitcher's uncertain tricky contract. The Jays passed on that idea. By the way, the Toronto Star's Richard Griffin thinks the Jays will keep Burnett unless offered a player who can improve the '08 team. Carroll wonders whether the Pirates would consider trading Ian Snell. Snell is...

SUNDAY, 7:13pm: Paul Meyer of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette clears things up. It is a guaranteed contract of $8MM for three years, with a $600K signing bonus. The two option years are worth at least $16MM, not including "standard incentive clauses." That's a great deal for the Bucs, wouldn't you say? SUNDAY, 6:23pm: The three-year deal is worth at least $8MM, according to a CBSSports.com wire report. SUNDAY, 4:22pm: It has just been announced on MLB.com that the Pirates have signed starting pitcher Ian Snell to a three-year guaranteed contract, with club options for 2011 and 2012. Salary amounts have not...

Dejan Kovacevic noted on Saturday that the Pirates have made a formal long-term offer to righty Ian Snell. As I wrote last Wednesday, the going rate for three arb years of a good young starter is $13-14MM. Kovacevic believes it was a four-year offer, probably tacking on the '08 season for less than a million bucks before covering Snell's arb years. Though the going rate is pretty well established, there is definitely still room for negotiation. Look at the differences between the three comparable deals: Jamie Shields (signed January '08) - extra money for pre-arb years, third arb year a...

According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have reached out to Ian Snell's agent about a long-term deal. Snell's salary will increase drastically in 2009 as he reaches arbitration. For that reason, I've wondered whether he might be next offseason's available young ace. Jamie Shields' deal could serve as a guide if the Bucs just want to buy out Snell's three arb years from 2009-11. Shields gave up his arb years for $13.75MM, though the last of those involves a club option. $13-14MM (not necessarily guaranteed) seems to be the going rate for a young pitcher's arb...

Some early Monday odds and ends to get things rolling... D-Town Baseball takes a closer look at the idea of Brandon Inge catching this year, something Dave Dombrowski would recommend to him. According to Marc Topkin, the Rays have increased payroll more than they promised (from $24MM in '07 past $40MM this year.) Speaking of '08 payrolls, the Detroit Free Press projects the Tigers at nearly $134MM. We've got a good discussion at RotoAuthority going regarding my Top 76 Fantasy Baseball Outfielders. The Pirates rejected Ian Snell's idea of a contract extension. He's under team control for four more seasons,..

John Perrotto had some new Pirates' rumblings in yesterday morning's column. Don't be so quick to dismiss the Ian Snell to Seattle rumor. Perrotto acknowledges it, noting that the Mariners would offer Jeff Clement but the Pirates would probably require Adam Jones. Perrotto believes the Pirates have backed off their pursuit of Johnny Estrada, though Dejan Kovacevic hasn't heard this. I never thought Estrada made much sense for them. Perrotto says the Pirates have an eye on free agent lefty Ron Villone, who pitched for them back in '02

UPDATE, 1-5-08 at 10:29am: Jason Churchill of Prospect Insider says talks between the Pirates and Mariners for Bay and Snell "never went past the introductory stages" - the Bucs' demands are not reasonable. FROM 1-3-08 at 11:51pm: Jake at Bucco Blog has been hearing a lot of buzz lately about the Mariners' interest in Pirates' righty Ian Snell. The 26 year-old posted a 3.76 ERA in 208 innings in 2007. He was an ace in the first half (2.93 ERA). Snell seems somewhat comparable to Matt Garza, though he's a bit older and has an extra year of service time...

Let's dig through the ol' mailbag once again. Feel free to shoot an email to mlbtraderumors@gmail.com. Do you have any news regarding Japanese shortstop Tomohiro Nioka? Is he a free agent and are any teams pursuing him? - Bob It seems that Nioka turned out to be ineligible for free agency. We'll have to keep an eye out for him next year. What's up with Joe Crede? Will the ChiSox be looking to deal him this summer if they are struggling? And if so, you have to believe the Phillies would be top contenders for him. - Dan I'm almost..

A short note from Yahoo's Tim Brown: the Tigers were apparently willing to put stud starter Andrew Miller in a deal for Dan Haren. It's interesting to hear that the Tigers inquired on Haren. You have to figure Miller or Cameron Maybin would be a requirement. Meanwhile Brown reiterates that the D'Backs checked in on both Haren and Joe Blanton. Arizona may have also checked in on Ian Snell, if you believe lobby fodder

Jake at Bucco Blog has some hot stove material, in addition to his roundup of Pirates prospects. The Rays are looking for a shortstop, and Jake hears that they might be interested in Jack Wilson. Jake said he debunked this rumor earlier this month, but there "might be renewed interest." I don't see it. Wilson has had a few decent years, but with over $14 million left on his contract, I see the Rays taking a cheaper route. Jake is hearing that the Pirates "we're not actively shopping any players" line is just a front. According to his source, the..

Ah, a new Rumblings and Grumblings from Jayson Stark. Let's dig in. It sounds like the Yankees would discuss Phil Hughes and the Red Sox might part with one of Ellsbury/Lester/Buchholz to acquire Johan Santana. The acquiring team would need an extension window though. The Mets are in on Santana big-time and would have to give up Carlos Gomez and then some. If the Twins do trade Santana, they would probably hang onto Matt Garza. But otherwise Garza could be traded for a young hitter, as we've been hearing. The Fish want four 0-3 players for Miguel Cabrera, pretty much..

I hate to tap from the same well twice in a row, but I felt the rumor at the bottom of Jake from Bucco Blog's post deserved it's own mention. Jake writes, "Lastly, are the Rockies going to go after Ian Snell? One NL exec thinks so.. and hard. I was surprised when I heard this one knowing the Rockies have a pretty solid core of young pitchers in their farm, but if Dave Holliday does come to work as player development or scouting director, well..." A lot of teams come off World Series trips with a truckload of veterans..

Will Carroll and John Perrotto have teamed up at BP to join the rumor mill, and yesterday's post is free to nonsubscribers. Some highlights: Carroll reports that the Cubs could swap Jacque Jones and a prospect for Jeff Conine. Perhaps such a move would be in tandem with Adam Dunn leaving Cincinnati. The Cubs might want to hold on to Jones though; he's playing well lately. Carroll heard a far out Alex Rodriguez to the Dodgers rumor, but doesn't buy it. Neither do I - the Yankees don't seem to be selling. Carroll says Brian Cashman and Co. will wait..

Back on June 24th, Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette mentioned that the Pirates inquired as to the availability of catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia. At that point the required bounty was thought to be a frontline starting pitcher like Mark Buehrle. Today, Kovacevic clarifies: the Braves want an impact-caliber young pitcher. That makes sense. The Pirates have a couple of those: Tom Gorzelanny and Ian Snell. They'd have to give one up to get Salty. Such a trade would be excellent for Atlanta but wouldn't really seem to move the Pirates forward. While shaky in terms of confirmation, we do have..
