Ichiro Suzuki Rumors
By Tim Dierkes [July 18, 2008 at 12:01pm CST]
Time for today's link collection. Geoff Baker on "The Ichiro Conundrum." Peter Schmuck assesses the Orioles' trade candidates, noting that several clubs are interested in Brian Roberts. Paul DePodesta on the Tony Clark trade. Mariners beat writers are stunned that Jose Vidro is still on the roster. Manny Ramirez drew a six-figure fine for his altercation with the team's traveling secretary. It's suggested that Ramirez showed his displeasure by laying down for an at-bat against Mariano Rivera. UPDATE: Gordon Edes looked into this and found the fine to be much smaller and the at-bat to be of no concern to...

Baseball is back today, but rumors are a bit light. We'll kick it off with odds and ends. Susan Slusser reports "rumblings" around Justin Duchscherer. As you know, Duke hopes to sign an extension with the A's but they'll wait until after the season. The Nationals signed second round pick Destin Hood. Matt Holliday has heard rumors about a trade to the A's. I believe this originated as Ken Rosenthal speculation on June 22nd. Xavier Nady doesn't want to be traded, and has been "visibly bugged" by the recent rumors. Still, he and Damaso Marte are the most likely trade...

Brian Cashman confirmed interest in Richie Sexson. Danny Knobler quotes Francisco Rodriguez as saying that the Angels offered him three years, $34MM in November. Here's a list of loose links (sink ships) from today: The A's officially inked Michel Inoa for $4.25MM. Corey Brock of MLB.com has a piece on the Padres' international signings. More here from the man himself, Paul DePodesta. The Marlins are still looking for a catcher, and one of their former guys might be available. That would be Paul Lo Duca. With the Nats out of it, could they swap Lo Duca within the division? And would they assume part of Lo Duca's remaining salary? Keep in mind that MLB.com's Joe Frisaro said yesterday that the Marlins were "not serious"...

Larry Stone of the Seattle Times runs through the Mariners situation as sellers. He considers Richie Sexson, Jose Vidro, Kenji Johjima, Miguel Batista, and Carlos Silva as untradeable due to either performance or contract, or both. Stone also doesn't see Ichiro Suzuki going anywhere: "The hot topic is Ichiro, who has a limited no-trade clause in his contract. The big question is whether he has a de facto full no-trade clause coming from Japan. The industry belief is that Hiroshi Yamauchi, calling the Mariners' shots from Kyoto, would never allow Ichiro to be dealt. I believe that, too." He entertains...

Time for some random linkage. I'll be on XM Radio today at about 5pm CST - channels 176-189 with Mike Ferrin. The Dodgers signed Jerome Williams - remember him? Viva El Birdos runs through starting pitchers who might be on the Cardinals' radar. Sam Mellinger of the KC Star takes a look at Dayton Moore's trade record. Meanwhile, Joe Posnanski explains why the Royals should sign Barry Bonds. Ken Rosenthal doesn't want to let Ed Wade off the hook in the Shawn Chacon dustup. Red Reporter thinks the Reds are winning the Edinson Volquez-Josh Hamilton swap. Rangers first base prospect...

Let's take a gander at Jon Heyman's latest column at SI.com. Heyman says three GMs who would have interest in Ichiro Suzuki have been told he's not available. Nonetheless, Heyman suggests trading the face of the franchise would be the best way to shake things up in Seattle. The Mariners have other valuable trade commodities: Erik Bedard, Raul Ibanez, and Adrian Beltre. Most of the team's other vets aren't valued highly, though Jarrod Washburn has strung together three decent starts. Felix Hernandez would draw a ton of interest, but the Mariners aren't expected to make him available. The Brewers' have...

Ken Rosenthal has a new hot stove article up. Rosenthal leads with some Mark Teixeira-Angels speculation, but admits the Braves aren't considering trading him and the Angels are content with their team. The Halos' .706 team OPS ranks 12th in the AL; something should be done. All kinds of Mariners turmoil. They could look to acquire a center fielder given the move back to right for Ichiro. Releases of Richie Sexson and Jose Vidro could be on the agenda. And chemistry problems abound, with Ichiro and Kenji Johjima at the center. The Ms might consider Chris Antonetti and David Forst...
