Jamie Moyer Rumors

Phillies Decline To Offer Arbitration To Burrell, Moyer

According to Todd Zolecki of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Phillies declined to offer arbitration to Type A free agents Pat Burrell and Jamie Moyer. The decisions are somewhat surprising; MLB.com had a story this morning saying arb offers were likely for both. Paul Hagen adds that Type B free agent Rudy Seanez also did not receive an offer. Sluggers Burrell and Adam Dunn were both denied today, as the Phillies and D'Backs didn't feel two draft picks were worth the risk. The Phils are still working to re-sign Moyer.   Continue Reading

No Agreement Yet For Moyer

12:01pm: David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News says everyone expects the Phils to re-sign Moyer. He says not to read into the Lowe/Burnett inquiries; the team has inquired on more than 25 free agents. MLB.com's Ken Mandel names six of them: Doug Brocail, Russ Springer, Raul Ibanez, Rocco Baldelli, Jerry Hairston Jr., and Nick Punto. 10:16am: According to Todd Zolecki of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Phillies are still talking to free agent pitcher Jamie Moyer but don't have an agreement yet. Moyer apparently wants a multiyear deal. The Phils recently contacted Derek Lowe and A.J. Burnett to hedge their...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Halladay, Lopez, Glavine

Links for Monday... The Cardinals still don't have a deal with Trever Miller. Is a multiyear deal coming soon for Jamie Moyer? Ken Mandel's source says it's been delayed only because of scheduling conflicts. The D'Backs released infielder Jamie D'Antona, who is headed to Japan. J.P. Ricciardi says trading Roy Halladay hasn't even crossed his mind. Dan Graziano wrote last Wednesday that some continued to insist the Jays would explore trading their ace. River Ave. Blues considers Ben Sheets a better investment than A.J. Burnett for the Yankees. Jim Allen profiled the five Japanese players who plan to come over...   Continue Reading

Phillies Rumors: Holliday, Moyer, Burrell

5:34pm: Mandel talked to a team source who says the Phillies were never close to a deal for Matt Holliday. Talks at the GM meetings were brief. 3:25pm: According to MLB.com's Ken Mandel, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. is now focused on re-signing lefty starter Jamie Moyer. Mandel gives a 50-50 chance Moyer signs before Friday. Moyer turns 46 soon, but he's not showing any signs of slowing down. He wants a multiyear deal after earning $7MM this season. Mandel adds that the Phillies have expressed interest in re-signing Pat Burrell, but he'll likely have a chance to test the...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Pettitte, Zaun, Blanco

Links for Tuesday... Scott Bordow feels the D'Backs and Randy Johnson should meet at $5MM, which still seems light. David Murphy explains why the Phillies make more sense than the Mariners for Jamie Moyer, geographically. David Ortiz would like the Red Sox to add a 30 home run bat. Richard Justice wants the Astros to sign both Randy Wolf and Andy Pettitte. He says the Cubs and Cardinals will be talking to Pettitte even though his heart is with the Yankees. El Lefty Malo recommends the Giants sign Derek Lowe. The Giants are at least considering the big-ticket free agents....   Continue Reading

Perrotto's Latest: Free Agent Predictions

John Perrotto has his Every Given Sunday column up over at Baseball Prospectus. Perrotto offers a list of some educated guesses as to where some of the top free agents in baseball will land, with some surprises here and there. Let's take a look: Perrotto lists the Yankees loading up on starting pitching, landing C.C. Sabathia and Derek Lowe, while the Dodgers land Manny Ramirez after doubling their initial offer to four years, $100MM. Perrotto says the Nationals will land Mark Teixeira, as they could be prepared to offer Teixeira - a Maryland native - ten years, $200MM. Turning down...   Continue Reading

Phillies Rumors: Baldelli, Hairston, Mench

5:44pm: MLB.com's Ken Mandel says the Phillies have Rocco Baldelli, Jerry Hairston Jr., and Kevin Mench on the radar in the event they don't re-sign Burrell. The Phillies have long liked Baldelli, though the Rays hope to talk contract soon. Reds GM Walt Jocketty recently met with Hairston's agent, and feels he made progress. And the Hanshin Tigers hope to lure Mench to Japan. 9:38am: Checkin' in on the Phillies... GM Ruben Amaro Jr. had an informal five-minute talk with Casey Close, who represents Ryan Howard and Joe Blanton. Talks have not yet begun with free agents Pat Burrell, Jamie...   Continue Reading

Phillies Rumors: Burrell, Moyer, Howard

Let's round up the Phillies links. By the way, I am hoping to get to their Offseason Outlook on Friday. The first issue is Pat Burrell, to whom the Phillies will probably make a two-year offer (according to Buster Olney). It is true that Burrell added a Philly-based agent (Ed Hayes), but he's also keeping Greg Genske. The confusion with agents is one reason negotiations haven't begun with the Phils. Burrell would love to return. If he doesn't re-sign, the Giants may be interested. Keep in mind that Burrell does not want to DH. If Burrell leaves, the Phillies hope...   Continue Reading

Phillies' Offseason Agenda

12:47pm: Scott Lauber has the latest from the Amaro press conference. Manny Ramirez seems unlikely as a left field solution. Execs surveyed by Jerry Crasnick felt the same. Burrell switched to a Philly-based agent, and talks will begin soon with the Phillies. Pat Gillick will remain with the Phillies as a paid consultant. 11:13am: The Phillies locked up Ruben Amaro Jr. as their GM through 2011. Items on his to-do list: Left fielder Pat Burrell could be back if he accepts a two-year deal. Otherwise, the Phils will kick the tires on Manny Ramirez, Matt Holliday, and Magglio Ordonez. Jim...   Continue Reading

Moyer Wants To Stay With Phillies

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer's Todd Zolecki, Jamie Moyer wants to help the Phillies defend their title next year. Moyer said that he hasn’t spoken with the Phillies about returning, but he’s optimistic about his chances of playing in Philadelphia in 2009. The Phillies have a core of Cole Hamels, Brett Myers, and Joe Blanton under control for '09. This year, Moyer had an ERA of 3.71 in nearly 200 regular season innings before pitching well in the World Series.   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Phillies and Rays

A few notes regarding the Phillies and the Rays, since this is all anyone is talking about today: Jim Salisbury of the Philadelphia Inquirer notes that arbitration-eligible Ryan Madson could be in for a nice raise this winter. The Biz of Baseball ranked all 30 teams by marginal payroll/marginal win. I'll let them explain the mathematical details, but unsurprisingly, the Rays win by a healthy margin. Howard Bryant discusses Carlos Pena's success with Tampa and how he resisted requests to change his hitting approach while he was struggling with Texas, Oakland, Detroit, New York, and Boston. A lot of writers...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Yankees, K-Rod, Moyer

Notes from SI.com's Jon Heyman... The Yankees apparently want to sign two free agent starters out of C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Derek Lowe. If Sabathia is one of them they'd be looking at a total outlay of $200MM or more. Ken Davidoff of Newsday notes that Sabathia might feel pressure from the players union to take the highest offer. Heyman believes the nation's struggling economy might temper spending, but not in the Yankees' case. Heyman doesn't see the Angels as terribly gung-ho about retaining closer Francisco Rodriguez. People close to Jamie Moyer say he wants to pitch until he's...   Continue Reading

Phillies Payroll Situation

We'll get into this more when we do an offseason outlook for the Phillies in a few weeks. But Jim Salisbury's column on the team's '09 payroll commitments deserves an early look. Salisbury computes that the Phillies will have over $100MM committed just to retain current under-contract and arb-eligible players. Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, and others will receive large raises. Jamie Moyer and Pat Burrell are free agents. Moyer seems likely to re-sign for $8-10MM, but Burrell is a question mark. The Phillies don't like the idea of giving Burrell a third year, which he could easily find on the...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Burnett, Inoa, Minaya, Glavine

Today's links... Pablo Ozuna...designated for assignment again. Additionally, the Phillies cut Andy Tracy. The 34 year-old hit .288/.377/.516 in Triple A this year. Eddie Bajek added AL infielders to his Elias rankings. Orlando Cabrera and Edgar Renteria are Type As, while Mark Ellis and Mark Grudzielanek are Type Bs. Cabrera could net the Sox some picks. The Phillies would like to bring Jamie Moyer back next year, but so far they've only had informal talks. Earlier this month Moyer spoke of an obligation with the Phillies, but he is not under contract for '09. The Phillies have also had informal...   Continue Reading

Week In Review: 8/10 - 8/16

Taking a look back at this week's happenings here on MLBTR... The biggest move of the month was the Diamondbacks' acquisition of slugger Adam Dunn for Dallas Buck, Micah Owings, and Wilkin Castillo. I can't remember any August trades of this magnitude. Bronson Arroyo told the media Dunn would be seeking over $100MM this offseason; Dunn denied the report wholeheartedly. I'd be surprised to see him get $100MM, but I also certainly don't think it would be the worst signing we've seen in the past few offseasons. The Red Sox acquired Paul Byrd from the Indians. Boston will pay the...   Continue Reading

Could Moyer Pitch To 50?

MLB.com's Joseph Santoliquito talked to Pirates manager John Russell, who opined that Phillies lefty Jamie Moyer could pitch til he's 50. When asked about the idea, Moyer wouldn't rule it out. At the least, Moyer intends to pitch next year. He said: "I have an obligation here that I plan on upholding next year with the Phillies, so I will be back at 46." The quote comes as a surprise to me, because I had Moyer listed as a free agent after the season. Perhaps he is referring to a verbal, rather than contractual, agreement in place with the Phillies...   Continue Reading

Phillies Acquire Jamie Moyer

Found via RotoWorld, FSN West is reporting that the Phillies have traded for 43 year-old southpaw Jamie Moyer. In 25 starts this year, Moyer's been just about league average. He makes about $6.5MM this year and has been a Mariner since 1996. Last year, Moyer used his no-trade rights to block trades to Houston and Atlanta at the trading deadline. The changeup artist has remained effective into his early 40s. Here and there, he's been stricken by home run problems. He's given up a lot this year while playing half his games in a ballpark that's neutral for home runs...   Continue Reading
