Javier Vazquez Rumors

Javier Vazquez Trade Reactions

The word yesterday evening was that the Braves acquired starter Javier Vazquez and lefty reliever Boone Logan for Tyler Flowers, Brent Lillibridge, Jon Gilmore, and Santos Rodriguez (MLB.com's Mark Bowman confirms the prospects). Look for the trade to become official tommorrow. Reactions to the deal: South Side Sox expects a couple of accompanying moves: the trade of Jermaine Dye for a young starter and the signing of an affordable free agent outfielder. They don't see the White Sox benefitting from the Vazquez trade in 2009, but at least Ozzie cleared out his doghouse. Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune says...   Continue Reading

Braves To Acquire Javier Vazquez

7:42pm: O'Brien believes Chicago's return to be Flowers, Lillibridge, third baseman Jon Gilmore, and pitcher Santos Rodriguez. 7:05pm: MLB.com's Mark Bowman says the White Sox will actually receive four players in the deal. They'll choose from a list of five, with Flowers and Lillibridge their top targets. 5:34pm: Rosenthal says an announcement could come Wednesday or Thursday. He says Lillibridge is in the deal along with a young starter, but it's not Reyes. Additionally, highly regarded catcher Tyler Flowers might be the third prospect (which would improve the trade quite a bit for the Sox). Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein says...   Continue Reading

Perrotto's Latest: Teixeira, Burnett, Wilson

John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus has his Sunday article up. Let's go through it: The Angels may be willing to match the Yankees $140MM offer to CC Sabathia. They won't offer 10 years to Mark Teixeira. If they can't land Teixeira, they will consider Pat Burrell for first base. A.J. Burnett is looking at the Blue Jays, Red Sox, Yankees, Braves, Orioles, and Phillies. The Twins want a left-side infielder for Delmon Young, so they can open a spot for Denard Span in the starting lineup. The Tigers are pursuing Jack Wilson from the Pirates and Matt Treanor from the...   Continue Reading

Mets Rumors: K-Rod, Dye, Vazquez

6:22pm: According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, Minaya has reached out to K-Rod and Fuentes. He says the Mets prefer free agency to trading. We also have a rumor from Joel Sherman of the New York Post. He says the Mets offered Aaron Heilman to the Rockies for Street shortly after Colorado acquired him. The Rox wanted the Mets to add Pedro Feliciano, and the Mets refused. MetsBlog has more insight into the team's plans. 1:33pm: Rounding up today's Mets rumors... On Friday, David Lennon of Newsday said the Mets had received Francisco Rodriguez's medical records. He also had Omar Minaya...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Dye, Burrell, Young

Here's a look at the latest from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Rosenthal says the Braves are interested in A.J. Burnett, but you already knew that. Rosenthal believes Trevor Hoffman to the Dodgers "makes sense." The Red Sox apparently have confidence they could trade Mike Lowell if need be, but rival execs believe he'd have to prove his health in spring first. Lowell has two years and $24MM on his deal. The White Sox want a young starter and additional players for right fielder Jermaine Dye. The Mets, Rays, and Phillies are "balking at such a price." Rosenthal learned that...   Continue Reading

Mets Rumors: K-Rod, Fuentes, Vazquez, Garland

The latest on the Mets. Joel Sherman believes the Brewers could interfere with the Mets' attempts to sign Brian Fuentes or Francisco Rodriguez. Ben Shpigel of the New York Times wrote this weekend that the Mets don't appear likely to dabble in the second-tier relief market for pitchers like Juan Cruz or Joe Beimel. Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog passes along a John Harper article from the New York Daily News, adding his own commentary. Harper believes the Mets may have to move on to Javier Vazquez, Jon Garland, and Edwin Jackson due to the high price tags on Boras clients...   Continue Reading

White Sox Considering Dye Trade

According to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune, White Sox GM and other front office members are evaluating talent at the Arizona Fall League for a possible Jermaine Dye trade. Dye can block trades to six teams, but Williams has a short list of suitors for him. He is set to earn $11.5MM in '09 and has a $12MM mutual option for '10 with a $1MM buyout. Dye, 35 in January, hit .292/.344/.541 in 645 plate appearances. He plays a below-average right field, according to the plus/minus system. The Rays, Angels, Braves, Mets, Phillies, and Reds could be in the...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Manny, Martin, Jenks

SI.com's Jon Heyman has some hot stove musings today. Heyman talked to one GM who asked (in reference to C.C. Sabathia), "When does anyone ever leave a dollar on the table, much less twenty or thirty million dollars?" I have heard this sentiment often but I do remember certain players leaving money on the table (often to play in California). Randy Wolf took less in '06 to sign with the Dodgers, and Brian Giles did the same for the Padres in '05. Kerry Wood turned down a multiyear offer from Boston last year. And how about Andre Dawson and the...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Nationals, Manny, Peavy, Vazquez

We've already touched on Ken Rosenthal's Matt Holliday update, but there are other good tidbits in the article as well: "Club officials believe" that the Nationals are "reasonably close to a breakthrough." They blame 2008's sorry performance on the raft of injuries Washington suffered, which is why they're willing to spend now for a big bat -- the key names floating around have been the aforementioned Holliday, Adam Dunn, and Mark Teixeira, though Rosenthal seems skeptical they could snag any of them. But what about Manny Ramirez? "Jim Bowden, the Nats' unconventional GM, probably would love the idea, but D.C....   Continue Reading

Latest Red Sox Rumors

A few notes on the Red Sox... From Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe Scott Boras met with Theo Epstein about Jason Varitek. Boras is still seeking a deal similar to the one signed by Jorge Posada (four years/$52.4MM). Epstein continues to look at other catchers including Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Taylor Teagarden. Cafardo also notes that the Red Sox could go after a veteran through the trade market like Bengie Molina. Other teams have expressed interest in both Coco Crisp and Julio Lugo, but noted that Lugo would not be part of a deal to the White Sox. Cafardo says...   Continue Reading

Mets Prioritize Pitching

9:15pm: Michael Schmidt has a look at the amusing binder the Boras Corporation compiled to sell Oliver Perez. 6:31pm: Mets GM Omar Minaya commented on Manny Ramirez, indicating that he plans to invest in pitching instead. 2:34pm: The Mets expressed preliminary interest in Jon Garland and Ryan Dempster, according to Ken Davidoff. Dempster's agent made it clear that he won't be re-signing with the Cubs soon. 1:23pm: ESPN's Buster Olney wrote in his blog this morning that the Mets are probably not willing to go past three years for Francisco Rodriguez or any reliever. 10:03am: More Mets chatter from Joel...   Continue Reading

Braves Rumors: Ludwick, Johnson, Escobar, Francoeur

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has all kinds of Braves info, found in the body and comments of his latest blog post. The Braves have expressed interest in Ryan Ludwick, and the Cardinals would be willing to take Kelly Johnson or Yunel Escobar in return. However, the Braves would probably have to include one of their middle infielders in a Jake Peavy deal and don't want to trade both this winter. Braves GM Frank Wren publicly acknowledged the Peavy trade talks. O'Brien believes a package built around Escobar has a chance. Pitching prospect Tommy Hanson is not available. The...   Continue Reading

White Sox Shopping Vazquez, Swisher?

8:43pm: Ken Davidoff says the Yankees had "extremely preliminary" talks with the Sox regarding Swisher. Something to keep an eye on if the Yanks don't sign Mark Teixeira. Additionally, Davidoff says the White Sox are not anxious to unload Vazquez. 9:42am: According to Dave van Dyck of the Chicago Tribune, the White Sox are aggressively shopping Javier Vazquez and Nick Swisher. Additionally, the Sox reportedly have interest in Rockies center fielder Willy Taveras. GM Ken Williams didn't offer much info regarding possible trade talks. Van Dyck speculates on names like Luis Castillo or Julio Lugo for Vazquez, seemingly suggesting Vazquez...   Continue Reading

Red Sox Rumors: Bay, Tazawa, Kawakami, Lugo

Collecting today's Red Sox rumors and links... Nick Cafardo says the Red Sox did not meet with C.C. Sabathia's agent and he doesn't appear to be in their plans. The Sox are eyeing southpaw reliever Billy Traber, according to WEEI's Alex Speier. Scott Boras believes Derek Lowe would be a good fit in Boston or New York. Nick Cafardo says Lowe would like to return to Boston, maybe even at a slight discount. Jason Bay's agents say he's loving Boston and is open to a contract extension. When asked about the possibility of Manny Ramirez signing with the Yankees, Red...   Continue Reading

Mets Interested In Javier Vazquez?

10:34am: Sherman says Minaya is not high on Vazquez as he once was. He heard the Mets might require the White Sox take Castillo's contract, which would probably be a dealbreaker. TUESDAY, 8:16am: Joel Sherman and Mike Puma of the New York Post talked to a Mets official who called the Vazquez idea a "pipe dream." It's difficult to see the White Sox taking Luis Castillo's contract back in a trade; Vazquez's value is not that low. MONDAY: According to Dave van Dyck of the Chicago Tribune, the Mets are interested in White Sox pitcher Javier Vazquez. Van Dyck implies...   Continue Reading

White Sox Looking To Trade Vazquez?

The latest on the White Sox... GM Ken Williams wants a younger, more athletic club, but still expects to compete in 2009. Players such as Chris Getz, Josh Fields, Jayson Nix, Jerry Owens, Brian Anderson, and Clayton Richard could play prominent roles on next year's team. Sox Machine offers their take on Williams' comments. Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun-Times lists Brian Roberts, Coco Crisp, Chone Figgins, and Orlando Hudson as potential Sox targets. Williams didn't talk much about his wish list yesterday, suggesting that last year's openness hindered his progress. If the Sox sign Hudson, they'll give their...   Continue Reading

White Sox Looking For Speed

With their season over, it's time to round up some White Sox rumors. Scot Gregor of the Daily Herald says GM Kenny Williams wants to add speed to the top and bottom of his order. Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune hints at the same. The speedy and available: Brian Roberts, Ichiro Suzuki (maybe), Coco Crisp, Nick Punto, Willy Taveras, Jerry Hairston Jr., Juan Pierre, Randy Winn, Bobby Abreu, Luis Castillo, Corey Patterson, Julio Lugo, and Cesar Izturis. Gonzales says Juan Uribe (free agent) and Toby Hall (club option) would like to return. Ken Griffey Jr. would also be willing...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Lowe, Redmond, Timlin

Linkage for Friday... River Ave. Blues discovered that Mike Mussina's wife may be a bigger factor than we thought in regard to his retirement decision. David O'Brien tosses out some names for the Braves to consider: Derek Lowe, Matt Cain, Roy Oswalt, and Josh Willingham. Everyone likes Lowe...Anthony McCarron says the Yankees and Mets should consider him. Those clubs could also enter a bidding war for C.C. Sabathia, says Bob Klapisch. Will C.C.'s postseason record diminish his contract? I don't think so. Greg Couch doesn't want Javier Vazquez pitching for the White Sox again. Maybe Ozzie is right, Vazquez is...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Aurilia, Vazquez, Al Reyes, Varitek

Some random links for today... McCovey Chronicles thinks Rich Aurilia would be a nice fit for the '09 Giants. Tyler Kepner of the New York Times says the Yankees never really had to give up on Javier Vazquez. The Mets released Al Reyes; he never pitched for them. Reyes had nine saves for the Rays in April of last year, but it's mostly been downhill since then. Jason Varitek does not want to talk about 2009. It's hard to see the Red Sox offering him more than one year. RotoAuthority discusses the fantasy baseball code of honor.   Continue Reading

White Sox Discuss Vazquez, Garland

There hasn't been much buzz on Javier Vazquez, but as suspected, Kenny Williams is at least willing to discuss him. According to Toni Ginnetti of the Chicago Sun-Times, Williams was discussing Vazquez with the Phillies before the Phils got Kyle Lohse. Pat Gillick and Kenny Williams really get along it seems. It would be interesting to see Vazquez in play over the next 6.5 hours. SI.com's Jon Heyman reports some talks surrounding Jon Garland. Heyman says Garland is "by far the best available starting pitcher right now." The Dodgers, Mets, and Diamondbacks have all inquired and found the price unreasonable,..   Continue Reading

Mariners Watching Starters

UPDATE: Hickey writes that the Mariners have also scouted Kyle Lohse, Matt Morris, Jason Johnson (thought he went to Japan), and Octavio Dotel. However, a deal seems unlikely because none of those players are worth top Mariner prospects. According to Jim Hickey of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Mariners have been scouting all kinds of available and not-so-available starters lately. The Mariners have been scouting the White Sox "religiously" lately. If they saw Javier Vazquez beat the Tigers on Tuesday, they came away impressed. (However, Vazquez can and probably would veto a trade to the AL or NL West). They were..   Continue Reading

Graziano On Greinke, Pettitte

Good stuff today from Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger. Here's my summary: Beyond the Cubs, Graziano lists the Braves, Dodgers, and Diamondbacks as teams interested in pitcher Zack Greinke. If the initial asking price for Octavio Dotel was as high as reported, I can't imagine what Dayton Moore would want for Greinke. Graziano's Dotel suitors: Cubs, Dodgers, and Brewers. The Red Sox, Rockies, and Indians have been mentioned by other sources. Quite a market for this guy. David Weathers is seen as the poor man's Dotel/Gagne. Let's see if Wayne Krivsky can get something useful for him. Stormy makes..   Continue Reading

White Sox Buehrle Extension Close?

UPDATE: Readers are writing in saying 670 AM The Score in Chicago is reporting that Buehrle is "likely" to sign an extension for four years and "around" $50MM. In a surprising turnabout, White Sox starter Mark Buehrle is off the trading block. Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times has the exclusive - the two sides might agree on a contract extension by week's end. It's possible that Buehrle has reduced his demand from five years to four. Would 4/60 get it done? Cowley says the White Sox remain Buehrle's #1 choice for the future, by a long shot. Even over..   Continue Reading

What About Other White Sox Pitchers?

A couple of Chicago newspapers raised a logical possibility today: what if the impending White Sox fire sale extends beyond those who will become free agents? Specifically, the Sox have three veteran starting pitchers under contract and any of them could be traded. Take Javier Vazquez. He's a fine addition to any team looking for a complementary, solid, healthy pitcher. Vazquez is signed through 2010 at $11.5MM annually, about the market rate. He'll turn 31 soon, and has no health issues. His strikeout rate is strong, his walk rate low. Granted he's HR prone and his ERA never quite seems..   Continue Reading

Fallout From Vazquez Extension

From Jermaine Dye's point of view, it may have been odd to see the White Sox negotiate a contract extension with Javier Vazquez on Tuesday. After talking to the club earlier, Dye's agent told the outfielder that the Sox would not talk contract extension with any player before the end of the season. The Daily Herald says he might accept less than Carlos Lee's 6/100 package. I think the Sox might consider 4/60 but he's a long shot to re-sign. And then there's Mark Buehrle, whose situation is more directly related to Vazquez since both are starters. It's pretty clear..   Continue Reading

White Sox Extend Javier Vazquez

In a surprise move, the White Sox signed 30 year-old right-handed starter Javier Vazquez to a three-year, $34.5MM extension today. The deal starts in 2008, as Vazquez is due $12.5MM this year. I love the move. If the Sox had to choose one of their guys to extend, Vazquez was the right one. Plus, they get him at a slight discount after a 4.84 ERA that did not represent his skills. How many American League pitchers strike out 8 batters per nine and walk fewer than 2.5? Not many. Vazquez's command, as measured by K/BB, is among the best in..   Continue Reading

Kenny Williams, Dealmaker

Either Ken Williams is keeping busy at the GM meetings, or the reporters covering the Sox have very fertile imaginations. I'm sure the truth is somewhere in between. In addition to the Andruw Jones deal I mentioned in the previous post, here's a roundup of possible White Sox moves: Chris De Luca reports on a possible Freddy Garcia / Ervin Santana swap. Oddly enough, his sources say that the "package" would be built around Santana. Garcia might be a better pitcher right now, but just barely: last year, Garcia was worth 15 win shares, while Santana was worth 13. Santana's..   Continue Reading

Rubin: Mets Could Get Garcia Or Vazquez

According to Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News, the Mets may be able to acquire Freddy Garcia or Javier Vazquez from the White Sox. He says: "The White Sox have been calling around to clubs - including the Mets - letting it be known that Javier Vazquez or Freddy Garcia would be available. The price: top-notch relief help, which would allow the Sox to fortify their bullpen leading to closer Bobby Jenks, sources told the Daily News. Chicago has 23-year-old Brandon McCarthy ready to step into its rotation." Seems like relievers are the hot ticket item of this..   Continue Reading

Javier Vazquez White Sox Projection

As I promised, I've got a new Javier Vazquez projection up over at RotoAuthority. This should prove to be a nice addition to the back of the Sox rotation, even with a hefty number of home runs allowed   Continue Reading

White Sox Obtain Javier Vazquez

In a move that took both me and Mark Gonzales by surprise, the White Sox acquired starter Javier Vazquez for center fielder Chris Young (plus the unwanted salaries of Orlando Hernandez and Luis Vizcaino). Whenever a defending World Champion makes a couple of major trades, the GM is inevitably described as "bold" in the media. I'm not sure whether I count as a member of the media, but "bold" is getting cliche. Check out some of these synonyms: spunky, audacious, gritty. I think I'll call Kenny Williams spunky when referencing the Vazquez and Thome deals. If you're a Sox fan,..   Continue Reading

Javier Vazquez Trade Close?

With a Javier Vazquez trade supposedly close to complete, it's been unusually hard to dig up information about the deal. Here's the situation so far: Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News addressed Vazquez today with just this blurb: "Javier Vazquez, who has piqued the Mets' interest, may be on the verge of getting shipped to the Windy City. A baseball insider suggested the White Sox are the most likely destination for the Diamondbacks pitcher, possibly leading to a trade involving Jon Garland (a free agent after the 2006 season) or Jose Contreras." Ken Rosenthal is on the same..   Continue Reading

Jocketty Faces Burnett Aftermath

A.J. Burnett slipped out of the Cardinals' grasp because of The Fifth Year, and Lboros over at Viva El Birdos thinks the team was being cheap. He mentions their new stadium, radio and TV deal revenue, and two postseasons in a row. Given that A.J. Burnett was the only free agent pitcher out there who could be a difference-maker, what are Cards fans to do? Well, they shouldn't count Walt Jocketty out just yet. While perhaps not the best trade in his history, Jocketty did make a move on one of last Javieyear's hot commodities, Mark Mulder. He's fully capable..   Continue Reading

Where's Javier Vazquez Headed?

Ken Rosenthal had an informative article yesterday about starting pitchers likely to be traded. It's not loaded with new information, but it's a handy summary. One bit of new info (at least for me) was a list of likely suitors for Javier Vazquez. Rosenthal named the Braves, Cubs, Mets, and Indians as likely to be interested. In the same sentence, Rosenthal mentioned that Vazquez's trade request was to join a team closer to his home in Puerto Rico. Vazquez was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico. I'm not sure if he still lives there, but it's a reasonable assumption. If Vazquez's..   Continue Reading

Mets Considering Javier Vazquez

All sorts of trade rumors coming from my source close to the Mets' front office. While it is well-known that the Mets are interested in Arizona righthander Javier Vazquez, my source names a pitching prospect contrary to published reports. According to my source, the Mets are considering dealing Kris Benson and 19 year-old blue chip pitcher Gaby Hernandez for Vazquez. Up to this point, published reports have named the polished 24 year-old Brian Bannister as the prospect in the deal. While Hernandez has not pitched above A ball, he has a much higher ceiling than Bannister. Bannister did impress in..   Continue Reading
