John Grabow Rumors
By Tim Dierkes [November 28, 2008 at 1:47pm CST]
Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is back on the scene to get us up to speed with the latest Pirates rumors. Let's start with the team's five veteran trade candidates: Jack Wilson: The Tigers and Dodgers are said to be the main suitors. The problem is that neither team wants to send the Pirates top prospects while paying all of the $7.85MM Wilson has coming. Additionally, the Pirates do not view Dodgers shortstop prospect Chin-Lung Hu as a possible trade centerpiece. The Bucs have spoken to at least two other clubs about Wilson, but Kovacevic rejects the previously reported...

ESPN's Jayson Stark has a new Rumblings and Grumblings column up. Some teams won't go anywhere near Manny Ramirez given the way he exited Boston. Opinions range on whether he'll get two, three, or four years this winter. Will he turn it off again after signing a long-term deal? And will other players use the same strategy to escape their contracts? The Rays are likely to stand pat, despite recent injuries. Rockies players haven't hit the waiver wire yet; Dan O'Dowd plans to wait until month's end. Stark wonders whether the Cards could win a claim on Brian Fuentes. Not...

12:03am: Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein believes the Pirates will end up with Stanton, Tucker, and Hermida. 11:21pm: Heyman says there's some prospect haggling but the teams are optimistic a deal will get done. The Marlins and Red Sox seem certain to make a swap, while the Pirates are trying to enhance their part. They are still at risk of being replaced by another club. Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe thinks a deal may be close, but not done. So we've got journalists on both sides of the fence, but everyone seems optimistic. 10:33pm: The Palm Beach Post says a...

8:37pm: Bay doesn't seem to be on the Cardinals' radar. However, talks continue with Tampa Bay according to John Perrotto. Bay could also end up in Boston in a three-team deal. 5:59pm: Jayson Stark reports that the Rays and Pirates haven't had much dialogue today, and that talks have slowed. The Pirates have backed off just a bit, but may want to see what happens with Manny Ramirez in case they can get the Red Sox interested. 3:16pm: Kovacevic has more. Brignac and Jeff Niemann's names are coming up in the Tampa Bay talks. ESPN's Jayson Stark heard the same,...

New collection of rumors from ESPN's Jayson Stark... The Twins have asked the Giants about Rich Aurilia. They've been dangling Boof Bonser for a position player; would they trade him back to San Francisco for Aurilia? On the Phillies' radar: John Grabow, Will Ohman, Arthur Rhodes, and Jack Taschner. A Brian Fuentes trade remains doubtful. The White Sox will trade Orlando Cabrera for the right pitcher. The Sox aren't generating much interest in their prospects.

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has the latest Pirates buzz. Lefty John Grabow is drawing interest from the Rays, Cardinals, Phillies, Red Sox, and Angels. Grabow gave up a couple of homers in his last outing; he missed time earlier this month with arm fatigue. The 29 year-old southpaw is under team control through '09. Calls are still coming in on Jason Bay and Jack Wilson, though the Rays are backing off on Bay. Kovacevic says the Red Sox might provide competition for the Dodgers in the Wilson sweepstakes. The Bucs interestingly called up shortstop Brian Bixler when Adam...

The NL East is a three-team race, with the Mets, Phillies, and Marlins all within a game of each other. Who'd have thought the Marlins would be contending after trading Miguel Cabrera? According to Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Marlins have intensified their search for a catcher. The targets: Bengie Molina, Ramon Hernandez, Gerald Laird, and Ryan Doumit. Molina and Hernandez are the pricey options. Doumit would be especially tough to pry loose; he has a .937 OPS this year as a 27 year-old. MLB.com's Joe Frisaro wonders if Miguel Olivo, Gregg Zaun, and Paul Lo Duca...

ESPN's Jayson Stark has a new Rumblings and Grumblings up. You may want to grab a glass of water or something, because this is a beast of a column. If the Braves have a bad weekend and decide to trade Mark Teixeira, a deal could come together quickly. Stark says the Braves have already touched base with the Rays, Red Sox, Dodgers, Angels and Yankees. Where Tex fits on the Rays, I'm not sure. Additionally, interest in Will Ohman is said to be "massive." A Jorge Posada move to first base could affect the Yankees' interest in Teixeira this winter....

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has the latest Pirates hot stove chatter. The Pirates are not opposed to creating a hole at shortstop for the rest of the year by trading Jack Wilson. They would just need the right return. Teams are still calling on Wilson, with the Dodgers confirmed and the Tigers possible. A Jason Bay deal seems less likely - the Pirates' price is high for their star. Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte continue to draw interest, with John Grabow in the mix as well. Nady or Marte would require two prospects each. Nady's suitors are the...

Randy Miller had some interesting Phillies rumors yesterday. According to Miller: The latest has the Phils hoping San Francisco, an NL West pretender, will shop 23-year-old right-hander Matt Cain. Word is the Giants might part with Cain, who is 5-7 with a 4.06 ERA in 20 starts, if offered an intriguing package of young talent. However, Jayson Stark wrote on Thursday: We keep hearing people speculate about the Giants trading Matt Cain. But we can't find a team that has gotten anywhere in its attempts to even get the Giants to discuss him. "I don't know who got that rumor...

Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press believes the Tigers might be quiet in the trade market this month. However, the team could use starting pitching and relief help. Morosi notes that the Tigers have not inquired on Randy Wolf or Greg Maddux. What's more, Wolf has the Tigers on his no-trade list. One starter known to be on Detroit's radar: Freddy Garcia. Morosi adds that the Tigers had discussions for John Grabow and Damaso Marte earlier this year. And keep in mind that Barry Svrluga said back in April that the Tigers "will watch Jon Rauch very closely."

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette discusses five Pirates players who were discussed in winter trade rumors. Neal Huntington wasn't satisfied with the offers, and decided to keep Jason Bay, Xavier Nady, John Grabow, and Damaso Marte. Huntington says Nate McLouth's name was only floated as a "trial balloon." Bay, Nady, and Grabow have all increased their value through strong Aprils (in part via their stats, in part via good health). Marte seems to have recovered from a rough start. Let's discuss some possible suitors. Bay is off to a .264/.396/.448 start. The 29 year-old earns earns $5.75MM this year...

It's well-known the Yankees want to improve their bullpen. There's been talk of converting young minor league starters into relief for 2008. Otherwise, who's on the radar? A reliever could be acquired for Hideki Matsui - Tyler Kepner suggests Jonathan Sanchez or Kevin Correia. Brad Hennessey is another possibility. Kepner says the Yanks checked in on LaTroy Hawkins, Ron Mahay, and Trever Miller but haven't made offers. However, Mark Feinsand says the Yanks are talking to Hawkins about a one-year deal worth between $3.25-3.5MM. Luis Vizcaino is probably out of the picture. George King adds Jeremy Affeldt to the list..

Rounding up some smaller rumors... The Phillies talked to the Pirates today about Nate McLouth, Damaso Marte, and John Grabow. Grabow remains a possibility. There's some ill will between the Marlins and Angels. Aaron Rowand, Andruw Jones, and Hiroki Kuroda are all asking for more years than GMs are willing to give. The Tigers picked up Freddy Guzman from the Rangers for first baseman Chris Shelton. Maybe Shelton can work his way into the team's first base mix. Interesting note from MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan - the Rangers considered trying to acquire Adam Jones, but Bill Bavasi said, "You don't want..

UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 5:25pm: The Braves will at least have a discussion with Mahay as a courtesy. They won't sign him unless his price comes down. MLB.com's Mark Bowman says the Yankees are the frontrunner, in contrast to Sherman's note below. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 9:45am: Joel Sherman says the Yankees don't like the price for Mahay and are considering alternatives such as Damaso Marte or John Grabow. FROM 12-5-07 at 7:55am: According to Marc Lancaster, the Rays are "firmly in the mix" for popular 36 year-old lefty reliever Ron Mahay. Four other teams are involved - the Yankees, Royals, Giants,..

Dejan Kovacevic and John Perrotto have the latest on the plans of Neal Huntington's Pirates. Both beat writers are saying not to expect Jason Bay to be traded at the Meetings. It would be a sell-low move with bad PR. Both also agree that Matt Morris staying put. Kovacevic spins it as if the Pirates should actually want to keep Morris, while Perrotto's sources suggest the Bucs would have to eat more than 70% of Morris' contract to ditch him. Kovacevic also suggests that the Pirates need Jack Wilson, and that's why he won't be going anywhere. Relievers Salomon Torres,..

Let's run down all the possible trades Dave Littlefield and the Pirates have brewing. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review still has Oakland as the favorite for Sean Casey, a move that makes little sense to me. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette mentions a possible swap of John Grabow for Ryan Shealy. That sounds reasonable. Dejan Kovacevic's article also indicates that the Mets and Yankees are leading the charge for Kip Wells. The Yankees also want Craig Wilson and Roberto Hernandez. Wilson and Wells seem unlikely at this point, though, as the Abreu deal looks close
