Kip Wells Rumors

Week in Review: 8/17 - 8/23

Another week in the books, and we keep seeing big names moved after the July 31 non-waiver deadline. Let's look back on the past week: The Dodgers acquired Greg Maddux from the Padres for two minor league players to be named later. Nice acquisition to bolster their rotation, and does anyone want to place bets on how excited 20-year-old Clayton Kershaw is to get tips from Maddux every day for the rest of the season? The Pirates are exploring the idea of trading Jack Wilson this offseason more and more. Given the slim free agent market for shortstops, he would...   Continue Reading

Royals Sign Kip Wells

9:53pm: The Rocky Mountain News is reporting Wells signed with the Royals and will initially work out of the bullpen. 4:02pm: According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, the Royals have interest in free agent pitcher Kip Wells. The Horacio Ramirez reclamation project worked out well for KC, so Wells is worth a look. Wells needs better control and a solid defense behind him; his strikeout and groundball rates are solid.   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Guerrero, Sheffield, Wells, Lincecum

Here are a few tidbits from around the 'Net this morning. Vlad Guerrero wants to spend the rest of his days with the Angels. The question is, will the Halos pony up for a deal for the slugger's latter years? They hold a $15 million club option ($3 million buyout) for next year, Vlad's age-33 season. Will they work out an extension this off-season, or will they let Future Vlad and Future Reagins figure it out after '09? Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe mentions a player who wouldn't mind being traded: Gary Sheffield. The 39-year-old hasn't enjoyed his time...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Manny, McDonald, Bradford, Bowden

Collection o' links... Craig Monroe has cleared waivers and become a free agent. ESPN's Jerry Crasnick talks to Pirates GM Neal Huntington about his deadline deals. Pirates players Chris Duffy and Franquelis Osoria cleared waivers and will head to Triple A. Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi says manager Cito Gaston will be back next year. Yesterday Dan Shaughnessy wrote a few sentences about the commissioner's office investigating Manny Ramirez's final hours with the Red Sox. It's become a national story. More on the situation from the L.A. Times. Sean McAdam wonders if the Red Sox could acquire Toronto shortstop John...   Continue Reading

Rockies Notes: Giles Fails To Make Team

The Rocky Mountain News is reporting Marcus Giles was informed he won't make the club despite his solid spring. Giles wasn't on the list of players being sent to the minors (a list which included Victor Zambrano), but the speculation is that he will be released and given a chance to hook on with another team. The Dodgers would seem like an obvious fit, but it's likely several teams will be in the running. Giles hit .321/.457/.536 over 13 games, with four doubles and nine runs scored. He was also 3 for 3 in steal attempts. However, the likely starter...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Estrada, Payton, Kielty

Random rumors from the day... The Bucs are set with their starting five, unless they can trade Matt Morris. Dejan Kovacevic adds that the Pirates and Johnny Estrada have mutual interest but haven't spoken in a while. Roch Kubatko expects the Orioles to shop Jay Payton now that they've acquired Chris Roberson. Really, all of their vets should be fully available. Bobby Kielty has interest from three or four teams, but his first choice is Boston. The likelihood of that increases if Coco Crisp is sent elsewhere. Kielty is willing to give up switch-hitting if his new team so desires...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Giles, Chacon, Durbin

Here are today's random rumor tidbits. The Rox are interested in Marcus Giles for their second base opening. Giles was awful last year, they should just try something internal. Other Rockies notes: contracts with Kip Wells and Luis Vizcaino aren't quite finalized, and they may ink Victor Zambrano to a minor league deal. UPDATE: Wells, plus Mark Redman, are done deals. The Pirates still have their eye on Shawn Chacon and Chad Durbin. That''ll put butts in the seats. Also, Jake of Bucco Blog weighs in on a new Pirates hire. Speaking of Durbin, did he comment on this blog..   Continue Reading

Rockies Sign Kip Wells

According to Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post, the Rockies signed Kip Wells to a one-year deal worth around $3MM. Wells could start or relieve for the Rox, depending on how Franklin Morales looks early on. I was talking to a friend from STATS, Inc. who saw a lot of parallels between the Kipper and Joel Pineiro a year ago   Continue Reading

Rockies Close On Kip Wells, Pursuing Vizcaino

According to Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News, the Rockies are "working toward finalizing a deal" with Kip Wells. Ringolsby says Wells could give the Rockies flexibility, acting as the fifth starter or a reliever as needed. I imagine he's looking for $3MM or so one a one-year deal. Ringolsby adds that the Rockies are targeting Luis Vizcaino and seem willing to go to two years on him. Vizcaino's agent, Bean Stringfellow, indicated recently that the Viz was looking for three or four   Continue Reading

Rockies Still Looking For Relief

With LaTroy Hawkins out of the picture, the Rockies have turned their attention to Shawn Chacon, Luis Vizcaino, and Kip Wells. The Rockies could offer Chacon familiarity and a one-year deal. They wouldn't offer him a chance to start, which he might get elsewhere. It's been said he seeks three years. Matthew Cerrone says the Mets, Tigers, Astros, and Brewers have expressed interest in the 30 year-old. Vizcaino is looking for Linebrink money, which doesn't seem like something the Rox would do. Well is trying to reinvent himself as a setup man, and a one-year, $2.5MM deal could be an..   Continue Reading

Rockies Rumors: Iguchi, Cook, Kip, Holliday

UPDATE, 12-6-07 at 12:57pm: According to Thomas Harding of MLB.com, David Eckstein is now a Rockies' target for second base. They talked to Mark Loretta today, also. Harding adds that the holdup on the Cook deal is the amount of a fourth-year option. FROM 12-6-07 at 12:21pm: The Denver Post's Troy E. Renck has a lunchtime Rockies update. Renck doesn't see Tadahito Iguchi getting Kaz Matsui money, noting that only the Rockies are pursuing Iguchi at his preferred position of second base. That could change if the Orioles trade Brian Roberts. Though Aaron Cook's 3/30 extension isn't final, GM Dan..   Continue Reading

Crasnick's Latest: Lee, Wells, Bay

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick just cranked out a bunch of good stuff. The Indians have talked to the Cardinals about sending Cliff Lee over for Anthony Reyes and catcher Bryan Anderson. The Giants could trade for Ben Broussard, but want to see if he's non-tendered first. Kip Wells is being marketed as a setup man, since things didn't work out as a starter. Who knows, he puts a few mph on the heater in relief and maybe he takes off. Crasnick kills the Bay for Shoppach/Lee rumor...didn't seem right to begin with   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Colon, Clark, Gagne

Random rumors, let's round 'em up. How about Bartolo Colon to the Mets? David Lennon notes that Omar Minaya sold the farm to acquire him in 2002 as the Expos' GM. Scott Lauber says Aaron Rowand is insisting on a five-year deal. He adds that the Phils have interest in Geoff Jenkins but he might be too expensive. Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller are considered untouchable, so don't look for the Tigers to make any big trades. Patrick Saunders runs down some free agents the Rockies may consider for the back end of their rotation: Tony Armas, Matt Clement, Steve..   Continue Reading

Cardinals get Wells, Kennedy

The Cards finally made their first moves: they signed Adam Kennedy, brought in Kip Wells, resigned Gary Bennett, and gave Eli Marrero a minor-league deal. No monetary details, but Bernie Miklasz guesses $15M for three years, while Rosenthal thinks it's three years for $10M. With Kennedy, Bennett, Scott Spiezio, and Jim Edmonds on board for 2007, the Cardinals appear to have their position players mostly set. They'll probably still add an outfielder, but that would seem to be a low priority. Wells is a nice addition to fill out the rotation, but even counting on Adam Wainwright in the rotation,..   Continue Reading

Cardinals Tidbits

Several good items from Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Scott Spiezio is resigned to a 2-year deal. Jocketty's focus seems to be on pitching at the moment: talking about Vincente Padilla, Adam Eaton, and Kip Wells, and trying to bring Jeff Weaver back. Also looking for a Mark Mulder-like rotation filler-a nice thought, but I would think that a pre-FA starter would be incredibly pricey in this market. Luis Gonzalez and Julio Lugo are unlikely. By Jeff Sackman   Continue Reading

Rosenthal: Kip Wells To Texas

Though the Red Sox seemed close, Ken Rosenthal now reports that the Rangers have acquired righty Kip Wells from the Pirates. Guess Jon Daniels stepped in with something better than Abe Alvarez. UPDATE: The Pirates snagged 22 year-old reliever Jesse Chavez in the deal. Chavez just got promoted to Triple A   Continue Reading

Edes: Red Sox Inquire On Kip Wells

Check out Gordon Edes's latest blog posting for the Boston Globe. Through a Pirates source, Edes has learned that the Red Sox are discussing a trade for starter Kip Wells. Wells has been decent with a 3.16 ERA this month. He shut down the Giants last time out. UPDATE: ESPN's Amy Nelson says this one is on the verge of getting done. Also, word via Sons of Sam Horn is that this deal could be for Abe Alvarez   Continue Reading

Pirates Trade Rumors

Let's run down all the possible trades Dave Littlefield and the Pirates have brewing. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review still has Oakland as the favorite for Sean Casey, a move that makes little sense to me. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette mentions a possible swap of John Grabow for Ryan Shealy. That sounds reasonable. Dejan Kovacevic's article also indicates that the Mets and Yankees are leading the charge for Kip Wells. The Yankees also want Craig Wilson and Roberto Hernandez. Wilson and Wells seem unlikely at this point, though, as the Abreu deal looks close   Continue Reading
