Michael Young Rumors

Odds & Ends: Kikuchi, Bengie Molina, Marlon Byrd

Links for Wednesday... NPB Tracker's Patrick Newman says reports suggest the Rangers may be the top suitor for high school lefty Yusei Kikuchi. Newman adds a new team to the mix for Kikuchi based on comments from GM Ed Wade: the Astros. More from Newman, on what he calls "an interesting counter-point to the Kikuchi situation." Well-regarded Dominican righty Rafael DePaula, who has been suspended by MLB for misrepresenting his age, might head to Japan to begin his professional career. Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News talked to Giants pitcher Jonathan Sanchez, who hopes the team re-signs catcher...   Continue Reading

Rangers Mulling Third Base Acquisition

In the wake of Michael Young's hamstring injury, the Rangers are "considering trade options at third base" according to Evan Grant of D Magazine in a Wednesday article. Young is aiming to return two weeks from now, so it'd be a short-term upgrade over the current Omar Vizquel/Esteban German combo. And if the Rangers do overcome their 3.5 game defecit in the AL West, the September acquisition would not be playoff-eligible. Grant speculates on three potential acquisitions: Garrett Atkins, Melvin Mora, and Fernando Tatis. The problem is that the first two are being well-compensated for their lousy seasons, while Tatis...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal On Roberts, Hudson, Counsell

Let's take a look at the latest from Ken Rosenthal. The Orioles have their ears open Brian Roberts, whose trade value has diminished as he nears free agency. The White Sox can't afford him, the Braves are reluctant to give up talent, and the Cubs didn't discuss him in the Felix Pie talks. The Roberts market may improve once Orlando Hudson signs. Rosenthal's source says the Michael Young-Jermaine Dye discussions did take place. If you read Dave van Dyck's article, Ken Williams never specifically denied talks with the Rangers. Rosenthal believes that if the Cubs make another big move, it'll...   Continue Reading

Rangers Interested In Vizquel

T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports that the Texas Rangers are interested in signing Omar Vizquel to a one-year deal. Vizquel would help the Rangers for a year in the event that Elvis Andrus isn't major league ready in 2009. It again appears that Michael Young will not be playing shortstop for the Rangers anytime soon. Writes Sullivan, "A source said there is a good chance the deal will get done."   Continue Reading

Michael Young Agrees To Play Third

According to MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan, Michael Young has agreed to play third base for the Rangers this year. Young has also taken back his request for a trade. This creates room for Rangers shortstop prospect Elvis Andrus.   Continue Reading

Rosenthal On Lackey, Dunn, Young, Isringhausen

Here's a look at the latest from Ken Rosenthal. John Lackey is due up for extension talks with the Angels, as he'll be eligible for free agency after the '09 season. He'd easily be the best available starter. Rosenthal says talks with the Angels should occur before the beginning of the season, but the Halos may not be willing to offer A.J. Burnett money (five years, $82.5MM). In November, Jayson Stark said Lackey had been telling friends he expects to have an extension by Opening Day. That came after Lackey's confirmation he'd wait to see the Angels' offensive plans before...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Lowry, Kawakami, Lowe, Young

Links for Wednesday... Rany Jazayerli has withdrawn his support for Royals GM Dayton Moore. Chris Haft says that if Noah Lowry has a nice spring, perhaps the Giants should trade him rather than Jonathan Sanchez. Keith Law says Kenshin Kawakami should provide bulk innings for the Braves, while the risk with Derek Lowe is his age. La Velle E. Neal III doesn't get the sense the Twins are interested in Michael Young. Jeff Wilson looks at the likely free agent options for the Rangers. Peter Abraham suggests the Yankees don't have sufficient rotation depth without Andy Pettitte or a similar...   Continue Reading

Michael Young Requested Trade From Rangers

9:41pm: More from Sullivan - he has quotes from Jon Daniels on Young tonight: "We're not looking to trade him and have no plans to. We plan on him being a big part of our ballclub going forward." 5:22pm: Another interesting update from T.R. Sullivan at MLB.com regarding the Michael Young situation. The article focuses on Elvis Andrus' official invitation to Spring Training. Sullivan makes a point to clarify that the starting shortstop job is not Andrus'. Sullivan writes: "It is also not guaranteed that Andrus will be the Opening Day shortstop. The Rangers still have Joaquin Arias as an...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Smoltz, Young, Cameron

Links for Tuesday... Lyle Spencer doesn't think Michael Young and Jermaine Dye make sense for the Angels. Joel Sherman speculates on some possible matches Young trades. The Marlins' recent minor league signings, including John Koronka and Jay Gibbons. The Red Sox officially announced the John Smoltz signing today. Here's the transcript, and here are the contract terms. Buster Olney debunks the Mike Cameron for Nick Swisher rumor, saying the teams haven't talked trade since the Winter Meetings. With the ninth pick in a fantasy draft, this is the team I'd put together.   Continue Reading

Heyman On Young, Pettitte, Dye, Cordero

The latest from SI.com's Jon Heyman... It's more likely that Michael Young will give in and move to third base than be traded. Heyman runs through six (long shot) "potential contenders." Most were addressed here, but Heyman adds the Yankees. Yankees people believe there is less than a 50% chance of the team re-signing Andy Pettitte. He could instead retire or sign with the Dodgers or Astros. Heyman suggests Bobby Abreu or Garret Anderson for the Reds, noting that Abreu is probably too expensive. The White Sox want "top pitching prospects" for Jermaine Dye, not necessarily big league-ready ones. The...   Continue Reading
