<ul>
<li>The market for closers could focus on <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/perkigl01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Glen  Perkins</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cishest01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Steve  Cishek</a></strong> if <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/papeljo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jonathan  Papelbon</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/betanra01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Rafael  Betancourt</a></strong> are unavailable, <a href="https://twitter.com/pgammo/status/347385385908838400" target="_blank">tweets</a> MLB Network analyst Peter Gammons. Teams like the&#0160;<strong>Tigers</strong> and <strong>Red Sox</strong> are potentially on the hunt for late-inning help, but Gammons says to expect a high price on Perkins and Cishek.&#0160;</li>
<li><a href="http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2013/06/19/john-farrell-ben-cherington-take-stock-of-andrew-baileys-struggles/" target="_blank">Alex Speier of WEEI.com took a look</a> at Boston&#39;s closer situation today. GM Ben Cherington did not rule out the possibility of dealing for late-inning help, but also said that the club had internal options.</li>
<li>Buyers should not expect Papelbon to be available, Gammons further <a href="https://twitter.com/pgammo/status/347307630395547649" target="_blank">tweets</a>. He cites an unnamed&#0160;GM as saying that the <strong>Phillies</strong>&#0160;are unlikely to deal their closer or star pitcher <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/leecl02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Cliff Lee</a></strong> given <em>&quot;their pending TV deal.&quot;</em></li>
<li>Potential buyers include the <strong>Giants</strong>, <strong>Orioles</strong>, <strong>Padres</strong>, <strong>Diamondbacks</strong>, and <strong>Reds</strong>, <a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=20935" target="_blank">according to Baseball Prospectus</a>. While the O&#39;s may join the Giants on the market for starting pitching, BP&#39;s Bret Sayre says the club should also be in on a second baseman to address its glaring issues there. Likewise, Cincinnati&#39;s shopping list is relatively clear: an outfielder to replace the injured <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/ludwiry01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Ryan Ludwick</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/heisech01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Chris Heisey</a></strong>. BP further suggests that the Padres have many areas that could warrant an upgrade, while the Dbacks ought to look to add a &quot;star&quot; to compliment the emerging <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/goldspa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Paul Goldschmidt</a></strong>.</li>
<li>While the <strong>Nationals</strong>&#0160;were quiet at last year&#39;s deadline, ultimately acquiring backstop <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/suzukku01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Kurt Suzuki</a></strong> in a post-deadline deal, <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130619&amp;content_id=51112232&amp;notebook_id=51112468&amp;vkey=notebook_was&amp;c_id=was" target="_blank">MLB.com&#39;s Bill Ladson suggests</a> that the team could be more active this season. Getting the injured <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ramoswi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Wilson Ramos</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/harpebr03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Bryce Harper</a></strong> back is the first order of business, but the Nats could look to add a veteran right-handed bench bat given the struggles of the demoted <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/moorety01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Tyler Moore</a></strong>. Ladson also wonders whether Washington could look to pick up a fifth starter to replace the inconsistent <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/harenda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Dan Haren</a></strong>. But with Haren&#39;s salary and track record, Ladson says, the team is unlikely at this point to make such a move. (It is worth noting, too, that the Nats still have <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=youngch03,youngch04&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Chris Young</a></strong> working at Triple-A on an <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/04/nationals-sign-chris-young.html" target="_blank">incentive-laden deal</a>, though Young has struggled to a 7.88 ERA in seven starts.)</li>
<li>Although the&#0160;<strong>Rangers</strong>&#0160;have struggled at the plate,&#0160;<a href="http://espn.go.com/dallas/hot/?id=9402873" target="_blank">ESPN.com&#39;s Richard Durrett says</a>&#0160;the team&#39;s first order of business should be to shop for starters at the deadline. With the young back of the rotation still looking for consistency, and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lewisco01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Colby Lewis</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/harrima01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Matt Harrison</a></strong> still major injury question marks, Durrett says the club could look at high-end arms like Cliff Lee. Durrett&#39;s colleague Todd Wills, on the other hand, writes (same link) that Texas should focus on finding a left fielder. He suggests that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/ethiean01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Andre Ethier</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/willijo03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Josh Willingham</a></strong>, and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/q/quentca01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Carlos Quentin</a></strong> are viable possibilities. With <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/martile01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Leonys Martin</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gentrcr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Craig Gentry</a></strong> failing to nail down their roles and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=cruzne01,cruzne02&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Nelson Cruz</a></strong> still potentially a suspension target, says Wills, outfield depth could the the key down the stretch.</li>
<li>The&#0160;Padres&#39; recent hot streak has made the team a bubble buyer,&#0160;<a href="http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/jun/19/padres-blog-buyers-or-sellers/" target="_blank">writes Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune</a>. Sanders suggests that starting pitching is the most likely target, as GM Josh Byrnes has said. He says that arms like <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=johnsjo09,johnso012jos,johnso011jos&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Josh Johnson</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/buehrma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Mark Buehrle</a></strong> are potentially available could be a nice fit in the NL West&#39;s larger ballparks. Alternatively, if the Pads turn into sellers, the team may be able to find takers for pitchers <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/stulter01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Eric Stults</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/marquja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jason Marquis</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/volqued01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Edinson Volquez</a></strong>, and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/streehu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Huston Street</a></strong>.</li>
<li>Other bubble teams include the <strong>Dodgers</strong>, Giants, and <strong>Indians</strong>, <a href="http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/the-gms-office/post/_/id/6921/time-for-dodgers-giants-indians-to-reload" target="_blank">writes ESPN.com&#39;s Jim Bowden</a>&#0160;(Insider subscription required). Still in contention and with solid enough cores to remain there, Bowden says these clubs are in <em>&quot;reload&quot;</em>&#0160;mode and gives an in-depth analysis of their trade deadline approach. Los Angeles could use improvements on the left side of the infield and back of the bullpen, and might also look to add rotation or pen depth. San Francisco, meanwhile, could (as noted above) look for rotation help or shop for an outfielder given <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/paganan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Angel Pagan</a></strong>&#39;s injury. For Cleveland, Bowden says that the team should look to add <em>&quot;at least two more quality arms&quot;</em>&#0160;while not selling away the team&#39;s future. Be sure to check out the link for further analysis and potential trade scenarios.</li>

        <summary>The Nationals have signed third-round pick Drew Ward to a deal worth $850K, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America (via Twitter). <ul>
<li>The <strong>Red Sox</strong>&#0160;have shown heavy interest in left-handed hitting Venezuelan outfielder <strong>Freddy Rodriguez</strong>, who is training at Carlos Guillen&#39;s baseball academy. Rodriguez runs the 60-yard dash in 6.8 seconds and some scouts think he projects well enough to play center field.</li>
<li>The <strong>Nationals</strong>&#0160;have shown strong interest in Dominican third baseman <strong>Anderson Franco</strong>, although he will have to wait until Aug. 15 to sign due to the fact that he&#39;s not yet 16 years of age. The switch-hitter has big raw power and a strong throwing arm.</li>
<li>Dominican shortstop <strong>Lucas Tirado</strong>&#0160;has become one of the <strong>Dodgers&#39;</strong>&#0160;main targets. The 16-year-old played in the Under Armour All-American game at Wrigley Field last season and figures to be in line one of the summer&#39;s biggest bonuses. Badler notes that he has a nice left-handed swing, but his other tools are questionable.</li>
<li>The <strong>Brewers</strong>&#0160;are very intrigued by Dominican outfielder <strong>Nicolas Pierre</strong>, who many project to be able to stay in center field. Badler notes that he doesn&#39;t have one standout tool but is solid across the board.</li>
<li>Badler also profiles shortstop <strong>Carlos Hiciano</strong>&#0160;and right-hander <strong>Mayky Perez</strong>, though he doesn&#39;t list specific suitors for any of those highly regarded talents.</li>

have been missing either a first-round or a second-round selection, or
both, in six of the last eight drafts. That includes 2013, when they
went without a first round pick due to the Hamilton signing. The Angels made their first pick of the draft, Kentucky high school lefty <strong>Hunter Green</strong>, with the No. 59 overall selection. Here are more notes from the draft.</p>
<ul>
<li>The <strong>Cubs </strong>are happy with their draft haul, <a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/17552/mcleod-happy-with-draft-results" target="_blank">Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago reports</a>. &quot;<em>We definitely wanted to have a pitching-heavy draft again this year.
After the (first 10 rounds) Theo (Epstein) and I were sitting there
looking at the board and I felt really good about it</em>,&quot; says vice
president of scouting and player development Jason McLeod. After taking
San Diego third baseman <strong>Kris Bryant</strong> with the second overall pick, six of the Cubs&#39;
next seven selections were college pitchers. That was a deliberate strategy, McLeod says, to infuse their system with advanced starting pitching prospects.</li>
<li>The <strong>Nationals </strong>took <strong>Karsten Whitson</strong> in the 37th round. As Jim Callis of Baseball America notes (<a href="https://twitter.com/johnmanuelba/status/343500277212667905" target="_blank">on Twitter</a>),
 the <strong>Padres</strong> picked Whitson ninth overall in 2010. Whitson opted to go to
 the University of Florida instead, and he pitched two seasons there
before missing 2013 with a shoulder injury. Whitson <a href="http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100816&amp;content_id=13520526&amp;vkey=news_sd&amp;fext=.jsp&amp;c_id=sd" target="_blank">turned down</a> a signing bonus of over $2MM from the Padres.</li>
<li>Earlier today, MLBTR <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/06/draft-notes-phillies-cavan-biggio-lj-mazzilli.html" target="_blank">highlighted some stories</a>
 of teams drafting players with big-league bloodlines. It&#39;s not uncommon
 for teams to draft such players, particularly in the later rounds, and
there were so many on Saturday it would be difficult to name them all,
but here are a few: <strong>Ben Verlander</strong> (brother of Justin; Tigers, 14th), <strong>
Mike Yastrzemski</strong> (grandson of Carl; Orioles, 14th), <strong>Jonah Arenado</strong>
(brother of Nolan; Giants, 16th), <strong>Torii Hunter Jr.</strong> (Tigers, 36th),
<strong>JaVon Shelby</strong> (son of John; Brewers, 37th), <strong>Josh Pettitte</strong> (son of Andy;
Yankees, 37th),<strong> Jon Nunnally Jr.</strong> (Blue Jays, 38th) and <strong>Jacob Heyward</strong>
(brother of Jason; Braves, 38th). </li>

<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/suzukku01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Kurt Suzuki</a></strong>, Nationals:&#0160;$9.25MM option vests with 113 starts in 2013. &#0160;Suzuki was slated to split time behind the plate with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ramoswi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Wilson Ramos</a></strong> this season, but&#0160;Ramos&#39; hamstring has forced the club to give the veteran catcher 39 starts thus far (counting tonight&#39;s game). &#0160;The most recent update on Ramos, courtesy of the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/nationals-journal/wp/2013/05/27/updates-on-danny-espinosa-jayson-werth-and-wilson-ramos/" target="_blank">Washington Post&#39;s Adam Kilgore</a>, says that he&#39;ll be sidelined until around July 1st. &#0160;If Ramos heals up and takes starts away from Suzuki, it will be a club option worth $8.5MM with a modest $650K buyout.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/carroja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jamey Carroll</a></strong>, Twins: $2MM option vests with 401 plate appearances. Carroll has 105 PAs in 27 games this season. &#0160;The veteran has had more than his needed total in each of the last three seasons with 500+ plate appearances in each of the last two years.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/betemwi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Wilson Betemit</a></strong>, Orioles: $3.2MM option vests with 324 plate appearances (combined 700 between 2012 and 2013). Betemit underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on March 26th and a late May update (from <a href="http://www.masnsports.com/school_of_roch/2013/05/injury-updates-on-jones-reimold-scoop-and-betemit.html" target="_blank">Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com</a>) indicates that he still hasn&#39;t been cleared for baseball activities. &#0160;</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/berkmla01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Lance Berkman</a></strong>, Rangers: $13MM option vests with 550 plate appearances. So far, Berkman has 199 plate appearances to his credit and is on pace to lock in his 2014 option with ease. &#0160;In 2011, his last full season, the slugger racked up 587 PAs.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hallaro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Roy Halladay</a></strong>, Phillies: $20MM option vests with 259 innings pitched (combined 415 innings pitched between &#39;12 and &#39;13). &#0160;This was a longshot to begin with, but shoulder surgery earlier this month makes this one impossible.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/myersbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Brett Myers</a></strong>, Indians: $8MM option vests with 200 innings pitched in 2013 and a passed physical after the season. &#0160;After logging 21 and 1/3 innings in 2013, Myers was sidelined with&#0160;tendinitis and a mild ligament sprain in his right elbow and has yet to return. &#0160;When he does come back, it&#39;s possible that the Tribe will move him to the bullpen.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/z/zitoba01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Barry Zito</a></strong>, Giants: $18MM option vests with 200 innings pitched. Zito has racked up 62 and 2/3 innings through eleven starts this season. &#0160;It&#39;s far from a lock, but as it stands the veteran still has a chance at securing his 2014 salary. &#0160;His numbers are strong as he has a 3.88 ERA with 5.6 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/santajo02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Johan Santana</a></strong>, Mets: His $25MM option could have vested with 215 innings pitched or winning the 2013 <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/y/youngcy01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Cy Young</a></strong> Award, but he won&#39;t have a chance at that thanks to a season-ending tear in his pitching shoulder.</li>
</ul>
<p>It&#39;s also worth noting that Pirates pitcher <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/liriafr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Francisco Liriano</a></strong> has a $8MM club option for 2014, but it can vest at any of three levels - $5MM, $6MM, or $8MM - based on the number of days he is not on the DL this year with a recurrence of his right arm injury. &#0160;It&#39;s not known how many days the hurler must steer clear of right arm trouble in order to trigger each level of his option, however. &#0160;The left-hander made his season debut on May 11th.</p></div>

<p>“<em>We talked a little bit in Spring Training</em>,” Zimmermann said. “<em>My
agent and I said once the season starts, we’re going to wait until after
 the season. Hopefully, we’ll maybe spring something up at the end of
the season or going into next season or something</em>.&quot;</p>
<p>It was rumored last winter that the Nationals were interested in locking Zimmermann up in a long-term agreement but the two sides instead just settled on a one-year, $5.35MM contract for 2013.&#0160; Zimmermann, a Super Two player, still has two remaining years of arbitration eligibility and is eligible for free agency after the 2015 season when he is 29 years old.&#0160; </p>
<p><a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/extension-candidate-jordan-zimmermann.html" target="_blank">MLBTR&#39;s Steve Adams</a> recently speculated that a Zimmermann extension could take the form of a five-year, $60MM-$65MM deal.&#0160; That said, Adams noted that &quot;Zimmermann&#39;s case is unprecedented to some extent,&quot; and the right-hander could earn more given the new collective bargaining agreement and the fact that the Nationals (like every team) has more money to spend due to TV contract money.&#0160; These factors could bump the value of a five-year deal up to the $75MM-$80MM range, not to mention the fact that Zimmermann has raised his own value by pitching like a Cy Young candidate thus far in 2013.</p>
<p>If Zimmermann was confident enough to put off long-term contract talks for now, it seems as if he&#39;s also confident in his current and future performance to only accept an extension on his own terms.</p>
<p>“<em>I’d be
interested, see what they have to say. At the end of the day, it’s got
to be the right deal for me</em>,&quot; Zimmermann said.&#0160; &quot;<em>I’m not just going to take a deal that’s
team friendly. It’s got to be fair</em>.&quot;</p></div>
