Pat Gillick Rumors

Rosenthal's Full Count Video: Indians Manager, Johnson, Padres GM, Crawford, Mauer

Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com has a new Full Count video up this afternoon, so let's see what he's got for us... The Indians plan to conduct 8-10 phone interviews for their managerial vacancy, then bring in 3-5 finalists by the third week of October, presumably for formal interviews. Bobby Valentine will be "on the short list," and will almost certainly get an interview. Buck Showalter will not be a candidate. Cleveland is proceeding with the search as if Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell will not be a candidate, however that could change quickly if Farrell expresses interest in the...   Continue Reading

Odds & Ends: Gillick, Moronta, Halladay, Rays

Here are some choice links to kick off the afternoon... Former Phillies and Blue Jays GM Pat Gillick is not interested in a return to Toronto, writes ESPN's Buster Olney. However, the 72-year-old would not rule out handling baseball operations for another team down the road. Ben Badler of Baseball America reports that Eladio Moronta - one of the toolsiest players in Latin America - is now eligible to be signed, five months after being suspended for lying about his age. Manager Cito Gaston doesn't see the Blue Jays holding on to Roy Halladay if the team doesn't make other...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Dunn, Byrd, Epstein

Links for Thursday... RotoAuthority ranks the outfielders for fantasy baseball. All kinds of interesting comments from former Phillies GM Pat Gillick, including his thoughts on Pat Burrell and Milton Bradley. Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch weighs in on the Cardinals' second base situation. ESPN's Keith Law evaluates the Nationals' Adam Dunn signing. He considers it "$20 million for a few meaningless wins over the next two years." Evan Brunell of Fire Brand of the American League interviewed free agent hurler Paul Byrd. Rob Bradford of WEEI has quotes from Theo Epstein about trading young players. Shoutout to our...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Sabathia, Holliday, Griffey

SI.com's Jon Heyman has a new column up; let's take a look. "The prevailing opinion around baseball" is that C.C. Sabathia will sign with the Yankees, and C.C.'s friend Jimmy Rollins agrees. Matt Holliday "definitely intrigues" the Yankees. But they'd have to give up a lot to get him for one year, and they seem full at the outfield corners. Heyman, perhaps sensing a divide that does not exist, says Pat Gillick has relied on scouts rather than stats to make his decisions. Heyman also speaks of "a new hesitancy on the part of some to go for another young...   Continue Reading

Amaro To Replace Gillick As Phillies GM?

On Friday, SI.com's Jon Heyman suggested Ruben Amaro Jr. was the most likely replacement for Pat Gillick as Phillies GM. Today, Todd Zolecki of the Philadelphia Inquirer hears from team insiders that Amaro (currently the assistant GM) is expected to get the job. The decision would likely be finalized before the November 3rd GM meetings.   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Vlad, Cano, Peavy, Hardy

Today we have a fresh column from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Vladimir Guerrero's $15MM option for '09 is a lock, but perhaps the Angels will reconsider extending him beyond that. Some of the money could be used to make Mark Teixeira the next franchise player. Rosenthal says "virtually every club with a need at the position" has shown interest in second baseman Robinson Cano. If you give Cano a mulligan for April, he hit .297/.326/.448 in 2008. That seems like a reasonable American League projection going forward. Cano, 26 in a few weeks, is signed through 2011 with two...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Cabrera, Sabathia, Gillick

Your hot stove links for Thursday... Ken Fidlin of the Toronto Sun thinks the Blue Jays should consider Rafael Furcal. I concur. But even after missing most of '08, Furcal probably won't have to take a one-year deal unless he wants to. Phillies GM Pat Gillick didn't rule out the possibility of returning to Toronto as the team president. River Ave. Blues doesn't see the Yankees or Red Sox acquiring Matt Holliday. The Mariners are down to 10-12 names in their GM seach, before conducting a single interview. David Steele of the Baltimore Sun wants the Orioles to give Daniel...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Gillick, Pedro, Dempster, McLouth

Here's a look at the latest column from SI.com's Jon Heyman. Heyman is hearing "scuttlebutt" that GM Pat Gillick may not leave the Phillies after all. Theo Epstein's new deal is worth about $7MM over three years, which might be highest among GMs. Pedro Martinez's agent insists Pedro will pitch next year. In May, Martinez said he wanted to pitch two or three more years a couple days after suggesting retirement was an option. Moises Alou is undecided on 2009. Cubs GM Jim Hendry expects to re-sign Ryan Dempster after the season. Heyman says the Yankees "will likely make a...   Continue Reading

Several Teams Could Have New GMs In '09

A few articles today take a look at some GM positions in '09 that will have new faces... Michael Radano takes a look at who might fill the GM post for the Phillies in '09. Based on the Phillies current success, Radano wonders if they should just promote from within. That would mean one of the team's assistant GMs, Mike Arbuckle and Ruben Amaro Jr. Both Arbuckle and Amaro have interviewed with other teams for open GM positions in the past. Rick Freeman takes a look at the names most likely to end up as the GM in Seattle (John...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Hart, Ellis, Mientkiewicz, Varitek

Today's random links... Ken Rosenthal discusses possible changes at various GM positions. Jon Heyman says Pat Gillick could take a high-ranking role with the Blue Jays if not the Mariners. Former Indians and Rangers GM John Hart is interested in the Mariners job. The Mariners hope to have their permanent GM hired by the end of October. A Japanese pitcher invented a new pitch called the shake. Eddie Bajek wonders if Mark Ellis could handle shortstop. It's good to think out of the box given the free agent market at the position. Doug Mientkiewicz would like to spend another season...   Continue Reading
