Randy Winn Rumors

Giants Rumors: Molina, Pudge, Bay, Holliday

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News reports that the Giants are open to bringing Bengie Molina back, but prepared in case the catcher signs elsewhere. Here are the details: The Giants won't likely offer Molina much more than the $6MM he made this year. Molina wants a two-year deal, so Baggarly says the 35-year-old is unlikely to re-sign with the Giants. The Mets could have interest, and Baggarly says an unnamed AL team expects to get involved, too. Baggarly expects the Giants to offer Molina arbitration, but would be surprised to see the team extend similar offers to...   Continue Reading

Giants Advise Winn To Seek Employment Elsewhere

According to Andrew Baggarly of The Mercury News, the Giants called Randy Winn's agent to thank him for his services, then informed him to seek employment elsewhere because they have a number of young outfielders. Craig Landis, Winn's agent, said his client is looking for an everyday job, and "believes he’d be a good fit on a team that is looking to add athleticism to a lineup that already has plenty of power production." The 35-year-old hit .262/.318/.353 in 597 plate appearances this year, and his defense in the outfield checked in at a stellar +20.1 UZR/150.   Continue Reading

Giants Notes: Bay, Free Agents, Arbitration Cases

The Giants had a pretty busy day yesterday, re-signing second baseman Freddy Sanchez to a two-year deal, and outrighting lefty Noah Lowry, making him a free agent. Henry Schulman of The SF Chronicle has some more Giants' rumors for us this morning... GM Brian Sabean says he sees a "later-developing market. We don't have a relative sense of urgency like last year, which will play in our favor." Schulman says San Francisco is expected to make a run at free agent outfielder Jason Bay. Sabean also said the team has had "some level of conversation" with each of their potential...   Continue Reading

Randy Winn Wants To Stay With Giants

Chris Haft of MLB.com reports that Giants outfielder Randy Winn wants to re-sign with the club as he enters the open market for the first time in his career. Haft writes that it is "easy to surmise" that San Francisco will choose not to retain the 35-year-old as he had his worst offensive production in a 100+ game season, posting .262/.318/.353 with two homers. It should be noted that while he struggled at the plate, Winn was still strong defensively. Seeing time at each spot in the outfield (but mostly the corner positions), the one-time all-star posted a UZR/150 of...   Continue Reading

Sabean, Bochy To Return, Payroll To Increase

The San Francisco Giants will bring both General Manager Brian Sabean and Manager Bruce Bochy back for the 2010 season, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle. Sabean is completing his thirteenth season at the helm, while Bochy has been skipper for three seasons. Both have been the subject of rumors, but the unexpected challenge by the Giants for the Wild Card has likely been their savior. Giants' Managing General Partner Bill Neukom also said he expected San Francisco's payroll to rise in 2010. The Giants have about $28MM coming off the books for 2010, between Dave Roberts,...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Saito, Teixeira, LaRoche

More Tuesday links... Over at RotoAuthority, David Chase examines more of the optimistic Spring Training reports of '08. Particularly interesting: did pitchers follow up on their intention to use a new pitch? The Marlins' Scott Proctor signing is official. Also, Chan Ho Park with the Phillies. Carl Pohlad's three sons will take over for their father. McCovey Chronicles trade idea: Randy Winn for Xavier Nady. Add Randy Choate to the minor league deals for the Rays. Economist J.C. Bradbury says "the economic downturn cannot explain the magnitude of Pat Burrell's discount." He believes teams are exaggerating the recession effect. Keith...   Continue Reading

Manny Ramirez Rumors: Saturday

10:11pm: Ray Ratto of the San Francisco Chronicle writes that the Giants want to wait until the corner outfield market is "more precisely defined" before pursuing Manny. He adds that the Giants are unlikely to enter a bidding war so they need more financial flexibility than usual from Boras. 10:45am: Buster Olney adds that rival executives have "major doubts" about the Giants' willingness to spend enough to sign Manny, especially in the midst of a recession. Olney points out that trading Randy Winn or Aaron Rowand to clear payroll would likely yield very little in the current market. 9:13am: Henry...   Continue Reading

Giants Will Wait On Winn Extension

MLB.com's Chris Haft talked to Randy Winn's agent Craig Landis, who said the Giants want to wait before seriously talking about an extension for his client. Winn is set to earn $8.25MM in '09, the last year of his deal. Brian Sabean wants to construct his team before looking seriously at the Winn situation.   Continue Reading

Sabean On Manny, Sabathia, Sanchez

Andrew Baggarly offers some quick points following a discussion with Giants GM Brian Sabean. Manny Ramirez is not on the Giants' radar. Sabean says the team does not need another outfielder. Most would likely agree, with Fred Lewis, Aaron Rowand and Randy Winn all on the roster already. Offers for CC Sabathia and Mark Teixeira seem unlikely, but Sabean refuses to rule them out. However, Sabean also says: “We’re not out there swimming with the sharks. There are too many teams with more seemingly to offer financially than where we’re at right now.” Jonathan Sanchez isn't going to be traded...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Sabathia, Floyd, Winn

Here's a look at the latest from SI.com's Jon Heyman. Heyman heard recent "scuttlebutt" that C.C. Sabathia does not want to play for the Yankees. They're still expected to make a large offer, and Heyman also expects a big play from the Angels. Sabathia reportedly prefers California but has become more open-minded to other locations. Cliff Floyd plans to play next year, hopefully for the Rays. The team has a $2.75MM option with a $250K buyout. He's worth it. Heyman notes that Randy Winn would've made a fine acquisition for another club. The 34 year-old is hitting .315/.372/.438 in 611...   Continue Reading
