Randy Winn Rumors
By Tim Dierkes [September 15, 2008 at 7:33pm CST]
Here's a look at the latest from SI.com's Jon Heyman. Heyman heard recent "scuttlebutt" that C.C. Sabathia does not want to play for the Yankees. They're still expected to make a large offer, and Heyman also expects a big play from the Angels. Sabathia reportedly prefers California but has become more open-minded to other locations. Cliff Floyd plans to play next year, hopefully for the Rays. The team has a $2.75MM option with a $250K buyout. He's worth it. Heyman notes that Randy Winn would've made a fine acquisition for another club. The 34 year-old is hitting .315/.372/.438 in 611...

Rounding up today's links... Willie Bloomquist may have played his last game with the Mariners. The Rays feel they can be consistent contenders with a new stadium, as they could raise their payroll to the $80MM range. Former Dodgers GM Fred Claire takes a look at the free agent market. Athletics Nation notes the price on second baseman Mark Ellis has dropped. MLB.com's Mark Bowman explains the Braves' working agreement with the Hanshin Tigers. The Tigers don't have any of the big name free agents, but Frank Wren could still consider adding Koji Uehara or Kenshin Kawakami to his rotation....

Let's dig into a couple of blog posts from Giants beat writers Henry Schulman and Andrew Baggarly. Schulman says the Giants' front office is divided on whether to trade right fielder Randy Winn this winter. Nate Schierholtz has a .931 OPS in Triple A this year, but can he be a capable regular in 2009? Winn makes $8.25MM in '09, and can block trades to ten teams. The Giants could take advantage of a weak free agent market for center fielders, if Winn can still handle the position. Tyler Walker, owner of a 4.95 ERA, expects to be non-tendered by...

Today's linkage... A friend pointed out to me how strange it is that the Twins were willing to take on Jarrod Washburn's salary and give up Boof Bonser but chose to trade Johan Santana before the season. If Bill Smith could go back in time, would he still make that deal? A Gary Sheffield acquisition by the Rays is "unlikely but not impossible," according to one Buster Olney source. As expected, Jason Kendall's option for '09 vested. He's off the list! The Rangers were willing to trade Gerald Laird and a solid prospect to the Marlins for Chris Volstad. The...

Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes about the Mets' unsuccessful search for a corner outfielder. The Mets find the prospect price too high on players such as Raul Ibanez and Jason Bay. They don't seem to care for Adam Dunn or Brian Giles. They don't like Randy Winn's contract or lack of power. And Manny Ramirez is unlikely for numerous reasons. While the Mets are fans of Ibanez, they've made all of their interesting prospects untouchable. The Mets may prefer to use some of those prospects in offseason deals. For now they will stick with the red-hot Fernando...

Baseball Prospectus' John Perrotto has a new column. The Mets are looking at relievers Huston Street, Brian Fuentes, Arthur Rhodes, and Eddie Guardado. On the radar for outfielders: Jason Bay, Raul Ibanez, and Randy Winn. A new suitor for Fuentes has emerged: the Diamondbacks. Would they really make another move for a reliever? Other known suitors were named here. The Marlins would consider trading Cody Ross or Mike Jacobs for relief help. New name on the Rays' radar: Dodgers second baseman Jeff Kent. They're better off with Akinori Iwamura aren't they? George Sherrill suitors: Cardinals, Tigers, Dodgers, Marlins, and Phillies....

And still more minor notes from around the MLBiverse... First from Peter Gammons: Gammons says that the Marlins will not part with Anibal Sanchez for Brian Fuentes and will instead go after Arthur Rhodes. The Cardinals now appear to be the favorite for Fuentes. No teams seem willing to pay the asking price for Jason Bay. The Indians will pay the remainder of Casey Blake's $2MM salary. Next from Jayson Stark: The Mets are also showing interest in Randy Winn, but one official from another club feels Winn is just a backup plan. A couple of random notes: Bud Black...

According to Ed Price of the Newark Star-Ledger, the Yankees have been scouting outfielder Randy Winn. Winn, 34, is hitting .277/.345/.390 in 401 plate appearances. He's set to earn $8.25MM next year, and can block deals to ten clubs. You have to think the Yankees are treating this like another salary dump possibility.

Today's link collection: Joel Sherman says the Mets would be willing to eat some money on a contract to reduce the prospect price for a corner outfielder. He suggests names like Xavier Nady, Raul Ibanez, Randy Winn, and Adam Dunn. The salary-eating strategy would probably only help with Winn. The Hanshin Tigers purchased reliever Chris Resop's contract from the Braves. Ricky Bottalico says Brett Myers wants to be traded, but Myers and the Phillies denied it. It would be cool to see Yovani Gallardo return this year, if only to see him line up with CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets...

Giants GM Brian Sabean explained his trade deadline strategy to the San Francisco Chronicle's Henry Schulman. As you might expect, starters Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, and Jonathan Sanchez are off-limits. The trio has 331 Ks already. The Giants aren't interested in a rental, even though they are in the race at five games out. Sabean is likely to keep Bengie Molina and Randy Winn, but Ray Durham, Omar Vizquel, and Rich Aurilia are available.

According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Braves are one team with "apparent interest" in Giants right fielder Randy Winn. Winn can play all three outfield positions. Lately the Braves have been using Brandon Jones in left, Gregor Blanco in center, and Jeff Francoeur in right. Matt Diaz will be out several more weeks with a knee injury, while Mark Kotsay has a lower back issue. Winn, 34, is hitting a respectable .298/.359/.447 in 288 plate appearances. Winn's line would look better in center field, but Blanco has a tidy .375 OBP going. Winn makes $8MM this...

Cubs Special Assistant to the General Manager Gary Hughes attended an A's-Giants game recently, according to Henry Schulman. Could be nothing, since Hughes is based in the Bay Area. But here at MLBTR I like to put all the info in front of you. Schulman's source indicated that the Cubs have not asked about the apparently available Randy Winn.

ESPN's Jayson Stark checks in with a blog entry jam-packed with rumorage. Stark says the Giants are shopping Rich Aurilia, Ray Durham, Steve Kline, Randy Winn, Tyler Walker, Rajai Davis, and Merkin Valdez. The vets we knew about; the last two are a surprise. Probably stems from both being out of options. Brian Roberts update: Stark talked to a club official who's in touch with the Cubs and O's. That guy expects a deal to be done next week. Plus, Stark sees the O's as an active suitor for Kyle Lohse at the right price. Stark confirms the rumblings that...

Mark Healey at Gotham Baseball has long been a solid, underappreciated source of inside information. He's got another Rumor Mill up at his site. My summary follows. The Yankees have an eye on big-name 1Bs like Mark Teixeira and Todd Helton. But more realistically, they're looking at Tampa Bay's Carlos Pena. He's got the defense, so even if he regresses to a 20 HR bat it's a nice pickup. Healey's source believes Tyler Clippard is too much but the Rays like Sean Henn. The Yanks have also inquired about the versatile Ty Wigginton. The Reds, Rockies, and others have been..
