<p>Lowe was designated for assignment on Monday to make room for the newly activated <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lindbjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Josh Lindblom</a></strong>. &#0160;The hurler cleared waivers yesterday and had the option of joining the club&#39;s Triple-A affiliate but instead chose to elect free agency. &#0160;The Rangers signed Lowe to a minor league deal on March 6th and he subsequently made the team’s Opening Day roster. &#0160;In nine relief appearances with Texas, Lowe allowed 13 runs while striking out eight batters and allowing three walks.&#0160;</p>
<p>As MLBTR reported earlier this week, Teahen was granted his release <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/mark-teahen-granted-release-from-dbacks.html" target="_blank">from the Diamondbacks</a> and became a free agent. &#0160;The D&#39;Backs agreed to trade the veteran to the Reds earlier this month but the deal fell through due to Cincinnati&#39;s concerns about his physical. &#0160;While Arizona claims to have spotted a red flag or two, both the D&#39;Backs and Teahen say that he is healthy. &#0160;Across seven big league seasons, the versatile 31-year-old posted a .264/.327/.409 line for the Royals, White Sox, and Blue Jays.</p></div>

<li><strong>Angels</strong> righty <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/weaveje02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jered Weaver</a></strong> had a successful extended spring training start yesterday, reports <a href="http://www.latimes.com/sports/baseball/mlb/angels/la-sp-0523-angels-notes-20130523,0,944948.story" target="_blank">Kevin Baxter of the L.A. <li>The <strong>Mariners</strong> have dropped six in a row, and at 20-27, and <a href="http://www.ussmariner.com/2013/05/22/the-reason-to-make-changes/" target="_blank">Dave Cameron of U.S.S. He is already on the 40-man roster. If he sticks in the big leagues, he would be eligible for free agency after the 2019 season, and he would be a Super Two player, meaning that he would be arbitration-eligible after the 2015 season. Super Two status would only be an issue if the Rangers kept Profar in the big leagues much of the rest of the season, however, and it remains to be seen what they will do with Profar once Kinsler returns from injury.</p>

<li><strong>Astros </strong>GM Jeff Luhnow and owner Jim Crane watched a potential draft pick in Chapel Hill Saturday (likely UNC third baseman Colin Moran), and Luhnow says he&#39;s pleased that Crane came along, <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130519&amp;content_id=47986054&amp;notebook_id=47986774&amp;vkey=notebook_hou&amp;c_id=hou" target="_blank">MLB.com&#39;s Brian McTaggart reports</a>. &quot;<em>We don&#39;t comment on Draft-eligible players for obvious reasons, but we
continue to put in a lot of time against it, and it was great Jim was
willing to go out and see a player with his own eyes</em>,&quot; says Luhnow. &quot;<em>We
might try another couple before it&#39;s all said and done</em>.&quot;</li>
<li>The <strong>Mariners </strong>blew it by missing out on <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bournmi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Michael Bourn</a></strong> this winter, <a href="http://blogs.seattletimes.com/mariners/2013/05/19/mariners-seeing-what-that-crucial-speed-element-looks-like/" target="_blank">Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times argues</a>. &quot;<em>[T]he Bourn thing, for me, is a classic example of how this rebuilding
process has played out for the Mariners</em>,&quot; says Baker. &quot;<em>It’s taken a long time to get
where we are and I do think we could have seen some better baseball a
bit quicker had the Mariners spent some dough this winter and in prior
ones to shore-up where they were lacking</em>.&quot; Bourn is hitting .311/.363/.473 and has been a key contributor to one of baseball&#39;s best offenses with the Indians, while the Mariners have the worst offense in the American League. The Mariners do have the No. 12 overall pick in the upcoming draft, however, and they would have had to forfeit that pick if they had signed Bourn.</li>

Lincoln went fourth overall to the Pirates. According to White, with Longoria already off the board to the Rays, the Dodgers&#0160;<em>&quot;were hoping and praying Clayton would get to us.&quot;</em>&#0160;That&#39;s just what happened: consensus top arm <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=millean01,miller008and&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Andrew Miller</a></strong> fell, perhaps owing to signabilty concerns, and was nabbed by the Tigers at number six, leaving Kershaw for L.A.&#0160;The decision to take Kershaw caused some initial consternation when <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/linceti01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Tim Lincecum</a></strong>, taken with the tenth pick by the rival Giants, began his career with a bang. Now, of course, the Dodgers (and their fans) could not be more pleased with their selection. Here are a few more notes from the leagues&#39; western divisions:</p>
<ul>
<li>With the <strong>Rockies</strong> off to an up-and-down start, the Denver Post&#39;s Woody Paige has some <a href="http://www.denverpost.com/paige/ci_23275893/paige-rockies-better-lose-tulowitzki-gonzalez?source=rss&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+dp-sports-rockies+%28Denver+Post%3A+Sports%3A+Rockies%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader" target="_blank">harsh words</a> for the team&#39;s ownership and management. He says that, with a top-12 attendance but a bottom-7 payroll, the club appears <em>&quot;content to produce a .500 team.&quot;</em>&#0160;Among the decisions Paige disagrees with are the team&#39;s apparent intention to rely on veteran pitchers like <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/oswalro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Roy Oswalt</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/garlajo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jon Garland</a></strong> while former top prospect <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pomerdr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Drew Pomeranz</a></strong> toils in Triple-A and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chatwty01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Tyler Chatwood</a></strong> bounces between the minors and the big club. He warns that the Rockies could be in danger of losing the affections of stars <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/tulowtr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Troy Tulowitzki</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=gonzaca01,gonzal014car,gonzal015car&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Carlos Gonzalez</a></strong>. Unhappy superstars can always cause problems by demanding a trade, of course, but it is worth noting that Colorado has no immediate need to sell its shortstop and left fielder on staying in town. Tulowitzki is inked through at least 2020 (with a 2021 club option), while Gonzalez is under contract through 2017.</li>
<li>Despite four starters on the disabled list, the <strong>Rangers</strong> lead the American League in ERA (3.38). <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130519&amp;content_id=47969896&amp;vkey=news_mlb&amp;c_id=mlb" target="_blank">Richard Justice of MLB.com writes</a> that the success of the pitching staff is attributable to GM Jon Daniels&#39;s efforts to create a deep, talented organization. <li><strong>Astros</strong> GM Jeff Luhnow says it is still too early for the club to narrow down its likely pick with the first choice in the upcoming amateur draft, <a href="https://twitter.com/ChronAstros/status/336154305558102017" target="_blank">tweets</a> Brian T. The club will likely have more clarity when it conducts staff meetings in early June, Smith further <a href="https://twitter.com/ChronAstros/status/336154407592927235" target="_blank">tweets</a>.</li>
<li>As the Astros gear up for an important draft, the club is holding a series of four regional player workouts, <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130518&amp;content_id=47921802&amp;notebook_id=47925570&amp;vkey=notebook_hou&amp;c_id=hou#47926510" target="_blank">writes Brian McTaggart of MLB.com</a>. According to scouting director Mike Elias, the workouts will allow the club to <em>&quot;get up close and personal with the process and see some guys further down the list.&quot;</em>&#0160;He further notes that the process was utilized with success by the Cardinals: <em>&quot;It really helps those players get drafted and helps us make better decisions in the draft.&quot;</em></li>
<li>Meanwhile, Houston is beginning to see returns from its efforts to develop a pipeline of talent from the Dominican Republic. According to another <a href="https://twitter.com/ChronAstros/status/336154407592927235" target="_blank">tweet</a> from Smith, Luhnow is excited about the first Dominican prospect that the club&#39;s efforts produced. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cisnejo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jose Cisnero</a></strong>, a right-hander that was originally signed in 2007, checked in at fifteenth on Baseball America&#39;s ranking of the club&#39;s prospects and has been pitching from the club&#39;s bullpen this year.&#0160;</li>

<li><strong>Astros </strong>pitcher&#0160;<strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/humbeph01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Philip Humber</a></strong> has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Oklahoma City, according to Chris Cotillo of CLNSRadio.com (via <a href="https://twitter.com/TradeDeadliner/status/334737392361680896" target="_blank">Twitter</a>). &#0160;MLBTR has learned that the right-hander&#0160;has until Friday to accept the assignment or elect free agency. &#0160;Humber was designated for assignment earlier this week after&#0160;posting a 9.59 ERA with 5.0 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9 in seven starts and two relief appearances.</li>
<li><a href="https://twitter.com/FollowThePadres/status/334747589243179009" target="_blank">MLB.com&#39;s Corey Brock tweets</a> that the <strong>Padres</strong>&#0160;have requested unconditional release waivers on <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/delosfa01.shtml" target="_blank">Fautino De Los Santos</a></strong>, confirming an <a href="https://twitter.com/TradeDeadliner/status/334624066688401409" target="_blank">earlier tweet</a> from Chris Cotillo of CLNS Radio. De Los Santos, 27, was designated for assignment over the weekend. He made only two appearances for Triple-A Tucson this season due to an injury but has a 4.21 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 36 1/3 innings at the Major League level -- all coming with the A&#39;s. His release will become official on Thursday.</li>
<li>The <strong>Rangers</strong>&#0160;have signed right-hander <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/richmsc01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Scott Richmond</a></strong> to a minor league contract, according to Jeff Sullivan of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (<a href="https://twitter.com/JeffWilson_FWST/status/334702040133541888" target="_blank">Twitter link</a>). The 33-year-old Canadian hurler has a 5.27 ERA, 7.4 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 in 169 big league innings for the Blue Jays. Richmond, who was pitching in Korea prior to this signing, was on Team Canada&#39;s roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic. He will report to extended Spring Training, according to Sullivan.</li>

<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>Astros president and CEO George Postolos announced this morning that he is resigning from his role, according to MLB.com&#39;s Brian McTaggart (<a href="https://twitter.com/brianmctaggart/status/333998606925328384" target="_blank">on Twitter</a>). Barron&#39;s piece includes the following quote from Crane on Postolos&#39; sudden and unexpected departure:</p>
<blockquote>
<p><em>““We appreciate George’’s hard work in the acquisition of the Astros and his commitment to the organization. “I’’d also like to personally thank him for the assistance that he has provided to me over the last several years and wish him the best of luck in the future.””</em></p>
</blockquote>
<p>Barron&#39;s colleague, Brian T. Smith, reports that the Astros&#39; &quot;Big Three&quot; (Crane, Postolos and GM Jeff Luhnow) were all adamant that they were on the same page with the rebuild as recently as February. Recently, however, there was an increasing divide and certain members of the Astros organization were not happy with Postolos&#39; decisions (<a href="https://twitter.com/ChronAstros/status/334002173480423425" target="_blank">Twitter</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/ChronAstros/status/334002659231145984" target="_blank">links</a>).</p>
<p>Postolos&#39; departure from the Astros is expected to have little impact on the team&#39;s long-term rebuilding plan or the on-field product itself, <a href="http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/danny-knobler/22230642/postolos-departure-may-make-astros-people-happy-but-wont-improve-record" target="_blank">writes Danny Knobler of CBS Sports</a>. While many have speculated that this may ultimately free up a spot for Nolan Ryan to join the organization, Ryan himself today addressed the situation on the Randy Galloway radio show in Dallas by saying he isn&#39;t interested (<a href="http://blog.chron.com/ultimateastros/2013/05/13/nolan-ryan-on-astros-job-i-dont-think-so/" target="_blank">via Reid Laymance of the Houston Chronicle</a>).</p></div>

<ul>
<li>There’s always a lot of talk about <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=leecl02,leecl01&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Cliff Lee</a></strong> being trade bait if the&#0160;Phillies&#0160;slip, but one team insider said, “<em>Every time I hear a Lee rumor, I don’t believe it. Don’t think we’d be that dumb unless what we got back in return was so overwhelming that we’d be dumb to pass it up. Will that happen? My gut is it won’t.</em>”</li>
<li><strong>Angels </strong>skipper&#0160;<strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sciosmi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Mike Scioscia</a></strong> was once considered invincible, but the club&#39;s struggles have many saying that his job is in jeopardy. &#0160;One Angels exec doesn&#39;t see a shakeup coming anytime soon, saying, “<em>I doubt it. It’s Mike Scioscia. Did he get dumb all of a sudden? Or do we have a few issues with our pitching and a couple of our big hitters?</em>”</li>
<li>Left-hander <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cottsne01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Neal Cotts</a></strong> had&#0160;a streak of 14 and 1/3 scoreless innings for the <strong>Rangers&#39; </strong>Triple-A affiliate&#0160;and has retired 21 of the last 22 batters he’s faced. &#0160;Cotts, who has completely shut down lefthanded batters, could be had, as the Rangers don&#39;t have room for him on the big league roster and have a team policy that they will let go of players in that position.</li>

<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>Another day, another gem from a <strong>Cardinals</strong> starter.&#0160; <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wainwad01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Adam Wainwright</a></strong> took a no-hitter through 7 1/3 innings en route to a complete game, two-hit shutout in St. Louis&#39; 3-0 victory over the <strong>Rockies</strong>.&#0160; Wainwright&#39;s outing was a day after <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/millesh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Shelby Miller</a></strong>&#39;s complete game one-hitter against Colorado, in the process tying a Major League record for most consecutive batters retired by one team against another.&#0160; Between <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/y/younger03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Eric Young</a></strong>&#39;s leadoff single on Friday and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/heltoto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Todd Helton</a></strong>&#39;s fifth-inning walk against Wainwright today, the Rockies sent 40 batters to the plate without success.</p>
<p>Here&#39;s some news as we head towards a full slate of Mother&#39;s Day baseball...</p>
<ul>
<li>The <strong>Cardinals</strong>&#39; pitching depth was one reason they were comfortable letting <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lohseky01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Kyle Lohse</a></strong> leave in the offseason, the latest case of the Cards saving money and still contending thanks to their constant supply of young talent, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/12/sports/baseball/cardinals-spend-wisely-and-keep-on-winning.html?smid=tw-nytsports&amp;seid=auto&amp;_r=0" target="_blank">Tyler Kepner of the New York Times</a> writes.&#0160; “<em>I would say it this way: you don’t want to have a situation where you
can’t re-sign your best talent, long term, but there
are times when you have to pick and choose where you want to invest it</em>,&quot; St. Louis GM John Mozeliak said.&#0160; &quot;<em>Our model has been, if possible, to have that flexibility within our
payroll allocation without going too long and deep</em>.”</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/goldspa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Paul Goldschmidt</a></strong> is hearing unanimous praise from scouts and is being compared to some of the game&#39;s elite hitters, <a href="http://www.azcentral.com/insiders/nickpiecoro/2013/05/08/paul-goldschmidts-tear-continues-heath-bell-slams-the-door-wade-miley-makes-an-adjustment-or-doesnt-other-stuff/" target="_blank">Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic</a> reports.&#0160; Goldschmidt took a .977 OPS into Saturday&#39;s game, and as Piecoro notes, the <strong>Diamondbacks</strong>&#39; <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/03/diamondbacks-paul-goldschmidt-agree-to-extension.html" target="_blank">five-year, $32MM extension</a> (with an option on a sixth year) with their first baseman is looking like a major bargain.</li>
<li>Also <a href="http://www.azcentral.com/sports/diamondbacks/articles/20130511atlanta-braves-justin-upton-says-he-has-no-hard-feelings-about-arizona-diamondbacks.html?nclick_check=1" target="_blank">from Piecoro</a>, he hears from <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/u/uptonju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Justin Upton</a></strong> and <strong>Diamondbacks</strong> GM Kevin Towers that neither side has hard feelings about <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/01/braves-to-acquire-justin-upton.html" target="_blank">the big trade</a> that sent Upton to the <strong>Braves</strong> in January.&#0160; It has particularly worked out for Upton, who is enjoying an MVP-caliber season for NL East-leading Atlanta.</li>
<li><strong>Padres</strong> backup catcher <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bakerjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">John Baker</a></strong> could be expendable once <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/grandya01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Yasmani Grandal</a></strong> returns from his PED suspension.&#0160; Baker tells <a href="http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/may/11/baker-grandal-padres-catchers/" target="_blank">Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune</a> that he enjoys playing with the Padres but is prepared for whatever happens.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/minor-league-transactions-may-2-8/" target="_blank">Matt Eddy of Baseball America</a> recaps the week&#39;s minor league transactions.</li>
<li>Advanced statistics are taken with a grain of salt by many players, including several in the <strong>Rangers</strong> clubhouse, <a href="http://www.star-telegram.com/2013/05/11/4843118/advanced-baseball-statistical.html" target="_blank">Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram</a> reports.&#0160; <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lowede01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Derek Lowe</a></strong>, for one, believes his unimpressive peripheral stats were part of the reason why it took him until March to <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/03/rangers-agree-to-sign-derek-lowe.html" target="_blank">find a contract</a> with a team.&#0160; Texas, unlike several Major League clubs, doesn&#39;t have a full-time statistical analysis department in their front office though the club uses sabermetrics as part of their player evaluation process.<br />

<ul>
<li><strong>Angels</strong> GM Jerry Dipoto tells&#0160;<a href="http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/jon-heyman/22224928/big-names-bigger-disappoointment-angels-dipoto-says-too-soon-for-blame" target="_blank">Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com</a>&#0160;that his squad is simply <em>&quot;not good right now.&quot;</em>&#0160;He notes that, with so much going wrong, <em>&quot;it&#39;s awfully hard to look at one area or one person and say, that&#39;s the cure.&quot; </em>After investing huge money in <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pujolal01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Albert Pujols</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hamiljo03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Josh Hamilton</a></strong>, the club was only able to afford a pitching corps that sits <a href="http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&amp;stats=pit&amp;lg=all&amp;qual=0&amp;type=8&amp;season=2013&amp;month=0&amp;season1=2013&amp;ind=0&amp;team=0,ts&amp;rost=0&amp;age=0&amp;filter=&amp;players=0" target="_blank">near the bottom of the league</a> in all of the major, comprehensive pitching statistics. And, of course, neither Pujols nor Hamilton has performed as expected. The team admittedly entered the year <em>&quot;thin after the 25-man team and the 12-man staff,&quot;</em>&#0160;according to Dipoto, and that lack of depth was tested so much that the team was forced <em>&quot;to start drilling for oil.&quot;</em>&#0160;Now, in a comment that Heyman describes as being <em>&quot;perhaps ominous[],&quot;</em>&#0160;Dipoto says that the team is left waiting to see what happens as players come back from the DL: <em>&quot;As we get healthy, we&#39;ll have a better chance to assess where we are.&quot;</em></li>
<li>So far, the best free agent signing of 2013 has been the unexpected <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/reynoma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Mark Reynolds</a></strong>, <a href="https://twitter.com/scottmerkin/status/332662611156008960" target="_blank">tweets</a> Scott Merkin of MLB.com. Indeed, Reynolds is tearing the cover off of the ball for the <strong>Indians</strong>. After tonight&#39;s game, he sports a .291/.367/.645 slash with eleven home runs, which he has accomplished in part by lowering his strikeout rate to a level (25.0%) that is well below his career average (32.3%). Whether or not he keeps up this pace, he appears very likely to substantially outperform his <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/12/indians-to-sign-mark-reynolds.html" target="_blank">one-year, $6MM deal</a>. Certainly, the Orioles are likely regretting the decision to non-tender Reynolds, who would be an unquestioned upgrade at the club&#39;s disastrous DH spot.</li>
<li>Pitcher <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lewisco01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Colby Lewis</a></strong> of the <strong>Rangers</strong>, a prospective 2014 free agent, began his <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130508&amp;content_id=46992150&amp;notebook_id=47001924&amp;vkey=notebook_tex&amp;c_id=tex" target="_blank">rehab assignment</a> this evening with a two-inning appearance in Triple-A. According to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (<a href="https://twitter.com/JeffWilson_FWST/status/332691728060542978" target="_blank">via Twitter</a>), Lewis stretched his 45-pitch limit over just two innings as he labored through a 32-pitch second and ultimately let in three runs. As MLBTR&#39;s Steve Adams <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/free-agent-stock-watch-injured-starting-pitchers.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MlbTradeRumors+%28MLB+Trade+Rumors%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader" target="_blank">recently explained</a>, Lewis could earn himself a multi-year contract if he shows teams that his past durability can be counted on once more going forward. In an injury-shortened 2012, the 32-year-old Lewis put up a 3.43 ERA over 105 innings and registered 8.0 K/9 against just 1.2 BB/9.</li>

He knows the A&#39;s are in a tough spot due to injuries and a full roster, but said he loves the organization and fans and would like to re-sign there. Slusser cautions that there will be plenty of interest in Norberto from other teams, and she even adds that she&#39;s already been contacted by an AL scout asking how Norberto&#39;s rehab is progressing. Cameron expanded upon the article in the chat, including discussion of the way that baseball&#39;s current rule system will continue to impact teams&#39; trade incentives (beginning at around the 8:57 mark).&#0160;</li>
<li>The <strong>Rangers</strong> have used thirteen pitchers this season, ten of whom have never appeared in another MLB uniform, <a href="http://texas.rangers.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130429&amp;content_id=46115218&amp;c_id=tex&amp;tcid=tw_article_46115218" target="_blank">notes T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com</a>. Team CEO Nolan Ryan explains: <em>&quot;What you&#39;re seeing is a philosophy of pitching in our system and we&#39;ve stayed the course and we are committed to developing pitching within our system.&quot; </em>The current and future flow of pitching talent has enabled the team to pursue top line free agents like <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/greinza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Zack Greinke</a></strong> without feeling compelled to overpay.</li>
<li>With their solid start coming in spite of bad health, the <strong>Yankees</strong> could continue to tinker with their roster, <a href="http://riveraveblues.com/2013/04/recent-roster-cuts-could-be-fits-for-yankees-85820/" target="_blank">writes Mike Axisa of River Avenue Blues</a>. In particular, Axisa says players like <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wellsca01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Casper Wells</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nelsoch01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Chris Nelson</a></strong>, and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/q/quinthu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Humberto Quintero</a></strong> could all be easy ways to make small, but still-important upgrades.&#0160;</li>
<li>The <strong>Brewers</strong> are hoping to acquire a corner infielder/outfielder in the mold of <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kotsama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Mark Kotsay</a></strong>, <a href="https://twitter.com/jonmorosi/status/328950192697122817" target="_blank">Jon Morosi of FOX Sports tweets</a>. In 2011, Kotsay played in 104 games for the Brewers at all three outfield spots as well as first base.</li>

        <summary>As we close in on the month of May, let&#39;s check in on the players who have vesting options for the 2014 season... Kurt Suzuki, Nationals: $9.25MM option vests with 113 starts in 2013. Prior to Opening Day, the Nats announced that Suzuki would be in a timeshare with Wilson Ramos behind the plate. However, Ramos&#39; hamstring has led to Suzuki starting 16 of the club&#39;s 23 games so far in 2013. <li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/betemwi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Wilson Betemit</a></strong>, Orioles: $3.2MM option vests with 324 plate appearances (combined 700 between 2012 and 2013). &#0160;Betemit suffered a PCL tear during the last week of Spring Training, keeping him out of action until at least mid-May. &#0160;When he returns, he figures to see less action than he did last year thanks to <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/machama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Manny Machado</a></strong>.&#0160;</li>

<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hallaro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Roy Halladay</a></strong>, Phillies: $20MM option vests with 259 innings pitched (combined 415 innings pitched between &#39;12 and &#39;13). &#0160;So far, Halladay has logged 28 and 1/3 innings through five April starts but the 259 mark remains a longshot. &#0160;However, it&#39;s worth nothing that Halladay has come close to that figure twice in the last six years (2008, 246 IP; 2010, 250.2 IP) and surpassed it once in his career (2003, 266 IP).</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/myersbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Brett Myers</a></strong>, Indians: $8MM option vests with 200 innings pitched in 2013 and a passed physical after the season. &#0160;Myers is expected to miss most of May due to tendinitis and a mild ligament sprain in his right elbow. &#0160;So far, the right-hander has 21 and 1/3 innings to his credit in 2013.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/z/zitoba01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Barry Zito</a></strong>, Giants: $18MM option vests with 200 innings pitched. &#0160;Zito has 23 and 2/3 innings so far through the month of April and will make his fifth start of the year tonight against the Padres.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/santajo02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Johan Santana</a></strong>, Mets: His $25MM option could have vested with 215 innings pitched or winning the 2013 Cy Young&#0160;Award, but he won&#39;t have a chance at that thanks to a season-ending tear in his pitching shoulder.</li>
</ul>
<p>It&#39;s also worth noting that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/liriafr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Francisco Liriano</a></strong> has a $8MM club option for 2014 with the Pirates, but it can vest at any of three levels, $5MM, $6MM, or $8MM, based on the number of days he is not on the DL this year with a recurrence of his right arm injury. &#0160;It&#39;s not known how many days the hurler must steer clear of right arm trouble in order to trigger each level of his option, however. &#0160;Liriano has yet to take the hill in 2013, but he is expected to make his big league debut on May 10th vs. the Mets. &#0160;</p></div>

<ul>
<li>Bowden feels that <strong>Rockies </strong>senior VP Bill Geivett, <strong>Tigers </strong>VP/assistant GM Al Avila&#0160;and <strong>Athletics </strong>assistant GM David Forst&#0160;are all next in line to become the GM of their respective franchises. Geivett, in particular, is already <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/08/rockies-to-restructure-front-office.html" target="_blank">handling the day-to-day operations</a>, and Bowden feels it&#39;s just a matter of time before he&#39;s given the official title of general manager.</li>
<li>Bowden asked present GMs around the game who the top GM candidates outside of their own organizations were. The results, in order, were&#0160;<strong>Rangers</strong>&#0160;assistant GM Thad Levine, <strong>Cubs</strong>&#0160;VP of scouting and player development Jason McLeod and <strong>Marlins</strong>&#0160;assistant GM Dan Jennings. Bowden notes that each is blocked for one reason or another but would have plenty of interest from other clubs seeking a new GM.</li>
<li>Jack Zduriencik&#39;s time as GM of the <strong>Mariners</strong>&#0160;may be running out, <a href="http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/Mariners-GM-may-find-his-time-is-up-soon-042513" target="_blank">writes Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports</a>. The Mariners once again find themselves last in the American League in runs scored -- the same place they&#39;ve been for the previous four years under Zduriencik&#39;s watch. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/smoakju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Justin Smoak</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/ackledu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Dustin Ackley</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=monteje01,monter002jes&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jesus Montero</a></strong> have yet to establish themselves as big leaguers, and the trades of <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/leecl02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Cliff Lee</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/fistedo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Doug Fister</a></strong> look poor in hindsight. Rosenthal notes that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/i/iwakuhi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Hisashi Iwakuma</a></strong> is a coup for Zduriencik, and that help is close with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=zunino001mic&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Mike Zunino</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=frankl001nic&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Nick Franklin</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=paxton001jam&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">James Paxton</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=hultze001dan&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Danny Hultzen</a></strong> at Triple-A. A breakthrough is needed soon, however, and Zduriencik conceded that he knows it.</li>
