<summary>The Red Sox have signed left-hander Rafael Perez to a minor league contract, Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. MLB.com&#39;s Jordan Bastian heard from a source earlier today that Perez was signing with Boston though the move was &quot;not official&quot; yet, while Jon Morosi of FOX Sports first noted that Perez was talking to the Sox about a deal. Perez, 31, was released by the Twins last week after appearing in four games at Triple-A Rochester. <ul>
<li>While the Red Sox reportedly haven&#39;t talked about an extension with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/ellsbja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jacoby Ellsbury</a></strong> so far in 2013, they&#0160;have talked about a new deal with him at various points over the years about a multi-year pact. &#0160;However, each time, both sides agreed to a one-year contract to avoid arbitration instead. &#0160;Cherington implied that he does not expect to start talks with the outfielder again until after the season. &#0160;</li>
<li>Ellsbury has struggled so far in 2013, but the GM believes that he is in line for a turnaround. &#0160;Cherington believes that he has been unlucky with balls in play and the abundance of left-handed pitching that he has faced has also affected him.</li>
<li>Even though <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/masteju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Justin Masterson</a></strong> has been one of the top starters in the AL this season, Cherington said that he would have made the same trade that his predecessor, GM Theo Epstein, did. &#0160;However, he acknowledged that the team didn’t anticipate Masterson turning out to be this good. “<em>We thought, at the time, he would be a good major league starter or a really good reliever, and he’s probably exceeded that in a starting role,</em>” said Cherington. “<em>We were able to get him at a spot in the draft...but fast-forward, and if I’m in Theo’s shoes at the time, I would have done the same thing. The deal made a lot of sense at the time. We were trying to get into the playoffs, and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/martivi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Victor Martinez</a></strong> certainly helped to get us into the playoffs.</em>”</li>

<li>The&#0160;<strong>Red&#0160;Sox</strong>&#0160;are one of a few teams closely watching Japanese right-hander&#0160;<strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=tanaka003mas&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Masahiro&#0160;Tanaka</a></strong>. <li>The <strong>Red Sox</strong> will face a difficult decision on free agent catcher&#0160;<strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/saltaja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jarrod Saltalamacchia</a></strong> this offseason. &quot;<em>He’ll get signed somewhere because of his power,</em>” according to a scout. “<em>He’s improved defensively, but by how much? At this point, is he what he is?</em>”</li>
<li>One National League GM believes a <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/papeljo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jonathan Papelbon</a></strong>-<strong>Red Sox</strong> reunion is &quot;not far-fetched.&quot; Cafardo notes that the Phillies may be unwilling to part with Papelbon, who is off to an impressive start.</li>

<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>The Red Sox and Scott Boras haven&#39;t discussed an extension for <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/ellsbja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jacoby Ellsbury</a></strong> so far this season, sources tell <a href="http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2013/05/21/source-jacoby-ellsbury-red-sox-havent-talked-contract-extension/" target="_blank">Rob Bradford of WEEI.com</a>. &#0160;The outfielder will be eligible to hit the open market after the 2013 campaign.</p>
<p>Ellsbury is earning $9MM in his walk year after going through his final arbitration-eligible offseason. &#0160;The outfielder is off to a slow start through 45 games this season, and some have openly wondered if the distraction of his impending free agency is partly responsible for his&#0160;.242/.307/.335 slash line.</p>
<p>The 29-year-old, who ranks third on <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/2014-mlb-free-agent-power-rankings.html" target="_blank">Tim Dierkes&#39; free agent power rankings</a>, will have to pick things up if he hopes to cash in this winter. &#0160;Ellsbury is hoping for a repeat of his amazing 2011 season where he hit&#0160;.321/.376/.552 with 32 homers and 39 steals with a career high 732 plate appearances. ESPN&#39;s Buster Olney <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/red-sox-notes-ellsbury-hanrahan-dodgers-trade.html" target="_blank">recently wrote</a> that it would &quot;be a crusher&quot; to Ellsbury if he continues at his current trajectory, noting that he could have pushed for a $100MM contract with a return to those 2011 numbers.</p>

The 31-year-old outfielder has struggled to provide an impact in New York, hitting for just a .114/220/.182 line in 50 plate appearances so far this season. &#0160;</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/ellsbja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jacoby Ellsbury</a></strong> has not played as the <strong>Red Sox</strong> would have hoped in his contract year, notes&#0160;<a href="http://bostonherald.com/sports/red_sox_mlb/clubhouse_insider/2013/05/is_jacoby_ellsbury_being_negatively_impacted_by_his" target="_blank">Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald</a>. <li>Lauber also <a href="http://bostonherald.com/sports/red_sox_mlb/clubhouse_insider/2013/05/jonny_gomes_2_year_deal_with_red_sox_has_allowed_him_to" target="_blank">discusses</a>&#0160;how the two-year, $10MM deal <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gomesjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jonny Gomes</a></strong> signed with the <strong>Red Sox</strong> has affected the outfielder. &#0160;While Gomes has gotten off to a slow start in 2013, Lauber argues that the security of a multiyear deal has helped the 32-year-old focus on providing leadership to younger Red Sox players. &#0160;</li>

<li>ESPN&#39;s Buster Olney appeared on the Mut &amp; Merloni radio show in Boston, and <a href="http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2013/05/15/buster-olney-on-mm-going-to-be-a-crusher-for-jacoby-ellsbury-if-he-heads-into-free-agency-like-this/" target="_blank">Jerry Spar of WEEI.com has some of the highlights</a>. &quot;It&#39;s going to be a crusher&quot; for <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/ellsbja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jacoby Ellsbury</a></strong> if he continues this season on his current trajectory, says Olney. Ellsbury, who ranks third on <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/2014-mlb-free-agent-power-rankings.html" target="_blank">Tim Dierkes&#39; free agent power rankings</a>, is hitting just .256/.321/.363 through 39 games. Olney wonders if Ellsbury would gamble on signing a one-year deal rather than settling for a fraction of the $100MM he could have pushed for with a repeat of his 2011 numbers.</li>
<li>Within that same interview, Olney discussed Boston&#39;s decision to trade for <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hanrajo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Joel Hanrahan</a></strong> this offseason, noting that the Red Sox knew there were some health issues at the time of the trade. Many teams were aware of the issues with Hanrahan, which is why the Pirates didn&#39;t get much of a return for their two-time All-Star. Hanrahan joins a long list of players that must re-establish their value before getting paid, says Olney.</li>
<li><a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/red-sox/post/_/id/27280/the-trade-an-early-reckoning?src=mobile" target="_blank">Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston</a> takes a look back at last summer&#39;s blockbuster trade with the Dodgers, noting that Loney has departed to the Rays, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/dejesiv02.shtml" target="_blank">Ivan De Jesus Jr.</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sandsje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jerry Sands</a></strong> were included in the Hanrahan deal but <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/webstal01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Allen Webster</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/delarru01.shtml" target="_blank">Rubby de la Rosa</a></strong> have looked good. <div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>Earlier today, the Cubs confirmed last night&#39;s reports of a <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/cubs-to-sign-anthony-rizzo-to-seven-year-extension.html" target="_blank">seven-year extension</a> for <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rizzoan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Anthony Rizzo</a></strong>. At today&#39;s press conference to announce the move, general manager Jed Hoyer told reporters, including Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune, that the deal was first discussed in Spring Training, and talks accelerated in the past 10 days (<a href="https://twitter.com/PWSullivan/status/334036614915424256" target="_blank">Twitter link</a>). Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago adds (<a href="https://twitter.com/ESPNChiCubs/status/334039857842229248" target="_blank">also via Twitter</a>) that the contract was actually finalized last week; Rizzo took his physical his physical on the Cubs&#39; off-day. The two sides will re-visit discussions in the offseason to see if they can hammer out a long-term deal Samardzija is controlled through the 2015 season. The Cubs consider Samardzija &quot;one of their upper-tier starters of the future,&quot; writes Levine.</li>
<li>Selecting a pitcher with the No. 2 pick in this year&#39;s draft &quot;appears to be a sure thing,&quot; Levine adds. Stanford right-hander <strong>Mark Appel</strong>&#0160;and Oklahoma right-hander <strong>Jonathan Gray </strong>are the consensus top two arms in the draft right now, though Levine doesn&#39;t list any specific names.</li>
<li>In addition to extending Samardzija, signing one other free agent starter this offseason &quot;seems essential&quot; to Levine. That would give the Cubs a pitching core of Samardzija, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jacksed01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Edwin Jackson</a></strong>, the pitcher selected second in the 2013 draft, and a solid free agent, with another high draft pick in 2014 likely on the horizon. Here&#39;s a look at all of the available <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/02/2014-mlb-free-agents.html" target="_blank">2014 free agents</a>.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.csnchicago.com/blog/kapman/sources-expect-cubs-spend-next-winter" target="_blank">David Kaplan of CSN Chicago</a> offers a similar sentiment, stating that fans should expect the Cubs to spend on free agency once again this coming offseason. Multiple Major League sources, including an AL front-office executive, told Kaplan they expect the Cubs to be in on the top free agent names this offseason, including&#0160;<strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/ellsbja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jacoby Ellsbury</a></strong>. Ellsbury, of course, was drafted by Cubs president Theo Epstein when he was GM of the Red Sox.</li>
<li>MLBTR collected some <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/anthony-rizzo-extension-reactions.html" target="_blank">reactions to Rizzo&#39;s extension</a> from around the web earlier today, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.</li>

Here&#39;s a collection of notes from around the majors.</p>
<ul>
<li>The nine Asian-born pitchers who have pitched in the big leagues this
year have combined to post numbers similar to a typical <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/verlaju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Justin Verlander</a></strong>
 season, <a href="http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/maybe-its-time-we-stop-underrating-pitchers-from-asian-countries/" target="_blank">Dave Cameron of FanGraphs says</a>.
Those nine pitchers have 241 1/3 innings pitched so far in 2013, with a
 2.91 ERA, 9.6 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/darviyu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Yu Darvish</a></strong> has been a big part of that, of course, but Hyun-Jin Ryu, Hisashi
Iwakuma, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kurodhi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Hiroki Kuroda</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/tazawju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Junichi Tazawa</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/u/ueharko01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Koji Uehara</a></strong> have also pitched
well. The past struggles of pitchers like <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/matsuda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Daisuke Matsuzaka</a></strong> and Hideki
Irabu have allowed today&#39;s Asian-born pitchers to fly under the radar
somewhat, Cameron argues, and he wonders whether pitchers from overseas
leagues might be undervalued in the market. Specifically, he says,
emphasis on fastball velocity and breaking balls may cause teams to
undervalue pitchers with great splitters or changeups.</li>
<li>Free agency has become &quot;<em>a used car lot cluttered with lemons</em>,&quot; with only a few bargains to be found, <a href="http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mlb/news/20130507/free-agents-josh-hamilton-bj-upton/index.html" target="_blank">Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated argues</a>,
 citing the examples of <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hamiljo03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Josh Hamilton</a></strong> (Angels), <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/u/uptonbj01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">B.J. Upton</a></strong> (Braves) and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/greinza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Zack Greinke</a></strong> (Dodgers). Thus
far, Hamilton and Upton have failed to produce with their new teams,
and Greinke is hurt. In the past four seasons, Verducci notes, there
have been 24 free-agent contracts worth $35MM or more. Most of those
have turned out badly, and some (such as <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bayja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jason Bay</a></strong>&#39;s deal with the Mets)
 have looked bad almost immediately. That means that &quot;<em>win[ning] the winter</em>&quot;
by signing the biggest-name free agents isn&#39;t all it&#39;s cracked up to
be, as the 2012 Marlins can attest. This year&#39;s Angels and Dodgers have
struggled out of the gate, and so have the Blue Jays (who had a big
offseason mostly driven by trades). </li>
<li>The <strong>Astros</strong>&#39; decisions to <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/astros-designate-rick-ankiel-fernando-martinez-for-assignment.html" target="_self">designate</a> <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/ankieri01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Rick Ankiel</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=martife02,martin002fer&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Fernando Martinez</a></strong> for assignment made their outfield more athletic, <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130507&amp;content_id=46877850&amp;notebook_id=46883708&amp;vkey=notebook_hou&amp;c_id=hou" target="_blank">MLB.com&#39;s Brian McTaggart says</a>. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/grossro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Robbie Grossman</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/barnebr02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Brandon Barnes</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/paredji01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jimmy Paredes</a></strong> started in the outfield for the Astros Tuesday night. &quot;<em>We went out to get more athletic, get more guys who have the ability to
mishit the ball and still have a possibility of getting on base because
 of their athletic ability</em>,&quot; says manager <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/portebo03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Bo Porter</a></strong>.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/middlwi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Will Middlebrooks</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rossda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">David Ross</a></strong> left the <strong>Red Sox</strong>&#39;s game against the Twins Tuesday night after they collided. There is no indication yes that Middlebrooks will miss significant time. But after Middlebrooks, the Red Sox have little depth at third base, <a href="http://blogs.providencejournal.com/sports/red-sox/2013/05/not-much-depth-behind-middlebrooks-at-third-base.html" target="_blank">Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports</a>. Utility infielder <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/ciriape01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Pedro Ciriaco</a></strong> &quot;<em>isn&#39;t the answer</em>,&quot; MacPherson says, and the choices at Triple-A Pawtucket aren&#39;t thrilling. Minor-league veteran <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=henry-001jus&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Justin Henry</a></strong>, who was acquired in the offseason for Rule 5 pick <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=kobern002jef&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jeff Kobernus</a></strong>, may be the best option there. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/holtbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Brock Holt</a></strong>, who arrived from the Pirates with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hanrajo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Joel Hanrahan</a></strong> in the offseason, is another possibility. Of course, Middlebrooks himself has struggled this year, hitting just .195/.232/.281.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/peavyja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jake Peavy</a></strong> does not have a no-trade clause in his new contract with the <strong>White Sox</strong>, and he doesn&#39;t need one, <a href="http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/manny-machado-balitmore-orioles-rising-young-star-050713" target="_blank">Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports</a>. &quot;<em>I told (GM) Rick Hahn that if he didn’t trade me before spring training was over, that was good enough for me</em>,&quot; says Peavy, pointing out that it&#39;s unlikely he will be traded if the White Sox are contending.</li>
<li>Rosenthal also notes that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bumgama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Madison Bumgarner</a></strong>&#39;s contract with the <strong>Giants</strong> could be one of the most team-friendly in baseball. Bumgarner, 23, would have been eligible for free agency after the 2016 season, but his new deal contains cheap team options that can allow the Giants to carry him through 2019. </li>
<li>The <strong>Brewers </strong>have assigned <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=rodrifr03,rodrifr04,rodrig017fra&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Francisco Rodriguez</a></strong> to Class A+ Brevard County, <a href="http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/206455871.html" target="_blank">Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel notes</a>. Rodriguez will make three relief appearances there, then head to Triple-A Nashville. The Brewers must promote Rodriguez to the majors by May 17, or he can become a free agent. Rodriguez posted a 4.38 ERA with 9.0 K/9 and 3.9 BB/9 in 78 appearances with the Brewers in 2012.</li>

<summary>Here&#39;s a look at the latest edition of Full Count from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.. Chase Headley is probably going to be traded by the July 31st deadline. The Padres plan to spend the next two months determining whether they can lock up the third baseman long term, but there are two problems with that. For starters, Headley says he doesn&#39;t want to talk about a new deal during the season. Secondly, it would be surprising to see San Diego crack $100MM to keep him. Headley probably wants a better hitting environment and to play for a better team....</summary>

<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>Here&#39;s a look at the latest edition of Full Count from <a href="http://t.co/gpKQjuqw7P" target="_blank">Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports</a>..</p>
<ul>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/headlch01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Chase Headley</a></strong> is probably going to be traded by the July 31st deadline. The&#0160;<strong>Padres&#0160;</strong>plan to spend the next two months determining whether they can lock up the third baseman long term, but there are two problems with that. &#0160;For starters, Headley says he doesn&#39;t want to talk about a new deal during the season. &#0160;Secondly, it would be surprising to see San Diego crack $100MM to keep him. &#0160;Headley probably wants a better hitting environment and to play for a better team. &#0160;Meanwhile, there&#39;s no shortage of teams that would like to add him as Rosenthal says there could be at least a dozen clubs in the market for a third baseman, including the&#0160;<strong>Dodgers</strong>,&#0160;<strong>Cubs</strong>, and&#0160;<strong>White Sox</strong>.</li>
<li>If <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/napolmi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Mike Napoli</a></strong> stays healthy and continues producing, the&#0160;<strong>Red Sox </strong>first baseman will build his case for a multi-year deal in free agency. &#0160;Of course, Boston reduced their three-year offer to Napoli to one-year after learning he had a condition in both hips. &#0160;However, he&#39;s taking MRIs every three months to keep tabs on it and if the tests show that his condition is improved or stable, a team might be willing to extend a longer offer, especially since he&#39;s playing first base rather than catcher.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=johnsjo09,johnso012jos,johnso011jos&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Josh Johnson</a></strong> is the <strong>Blue Jays&#39;&#0160;</strong>most obvious trade candidate but if the season becomes a train wreck, they&#39;ll have the ability to move virtually any player. &#0160;<strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=reyesjo01,reyesjo02,reyes-016jos,reyes-004jos,reyes-017jos&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jose Reyes</a></strong> is the only player signed beyond 2015 while most players on multi-year deals are signed at affordable prices and no one has a no-trade clause. &#0160;<strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/morrobr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Brandon Morrow</a></strong> might be an interesting name as the club has lots of young pitching coming. &#0160;Of course, the Blue Jays have to fall out of things before considering such a move.</li>
<li>It&#39;s bad enough for the <strong>Angels</strong> that shortstop <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/segurje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jean Segura</a></strong> is blossoming into a star elsewhere, but they&#39;ve also traded away an entire rotation&#39;s worth of talent in recent years. &#0160;The Halos sent <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/corbipa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Patrick Corbin</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/skaggty01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Tyler Skaggs</a></strong> to Arizona for <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/harenda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Dan Haren</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=roach-001don&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Donn Roach</a></strong> to San Diego for <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/frierer01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Ernesto Frieri</a></strong>, and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=hellwe001joh&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Johnny Hellweg</a></strong> to Milwaukee in the <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/greinza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Zack Greinke</a></strong> deal. &#0160;On top of that, the Angels weakened their farm system by giving up their first and second round picks last year for <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pujolal01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Albert Pujols</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wilsocj01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">C.J. Wilson</a></strong> and their first round pick this year to ink <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hamiljo03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Josh Hamilton</a></strong>. &#0160;Their top pick last year was No. 114, this year it&#39;ll be No. 59.</li>

<summary>Here are a few notes from around baseball: David Ortiz signed with the Red Sox this offseason before testing the market, even though he was aware that the Rangers were reportedly prepared to make him a two-year offer, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. Ortiz&#39;s two-year deal, which will pay him at least $26MM, was inked just before he would have been permitted to negotiate with other clubs. Ortiz says he knew he would return to Boston all along, especially after the team approached him about a new contract while he was injured during the 2012 season. Now, Ortiz says, contracts...</summary>

Ortiz&#0160;says he knew he would return to Boston all along, especially after the team approached him about a new contract while he was injured during the 2012 season. &#0160;Now, Ortiz says, contracts are not on his mind: <em>&quot;I&#39;m not thinking of any of that. I&#39;m just thinking of raking.&quot;</em>&#0160;Of course, he has been doing just that so far in 2013, posting an absurd .465/.489/.837 line over 47 plate appearances since returning from injury.</li>
<li>Yesterday, minor league infielder/outfielder <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/teahema01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Mark Teahen</a></strong> was <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/reds-d-backs-unable-to-complete-teahen-trade.html" target="_blank">returned</a>&#0160;to the <strong>Diamondbacks</strong> after being <a href="https://twitter.com/JackMagruder/status/329431375511969793" target="_blank">sent</a>&#0160;(Twitter link) to the <strong>Reds</strong> for cash or a player to be named later. <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130503&amp;content_id=46535352&amp;notebook_id=46540660&amp;vkey=notebook_ari&amp;c_id=ari" target="_blank">MLB.com&#39;s Steve Gilbert reports</a>&#0160;that both teams were caught off guard when they learned that Teahen&#39;s shoulder was ailing. Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers explained:&#0160;<em>&quot;Two days prior to us trading him he dove for a ball, didn&#39;t say anything, didn&#39;t show up on any of our medical reports. When he did his physical over there he said he felt something in his shoulder, didn&#39;t quite feel right. [He] hadn&#39;t said anything to us. [The Reds] basically said there&#39;s some concerns because, &#39;We were expecting to get a healthy player, and if he&#39;s not able to go right now, we probably have less interest in doing it.&#39;&quot;</em></li>

Former starter <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=carpech01,carpech02&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Chris Carpenter</a></strong> -- who said in March that he thought his career was over (<a href="https://twitter.com/LangoschMLB/status/313698938748276736" target="_blank">Twitter link</a>) -- is now looking to come back as a reliever. GM John Mozeliak says he is <em>&quot;candidly optimistic and excited about him contributing,&quot;</em>&#0160;and that a late June or early July return could be possible.&#0160;</li>
