managerial changes often occur on off-days before a homestand</em>.&quot; The Dodgers are currently 17-25 after being swept by the Braves. Rosenthal notes that GM Ned Colletti might find himself on the hot seat as well, but that the typical pattern is for the manager to be the first out the door. <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/west-notes-chavez-astros-angels-mattingly.html" target="_blank">When asked recently</a> whether Mattingly would remain with the Dodgers through the end of the season, team president Stan Kasten replied, &quot;<em>I assume so</em>,&quot; but noted that he expected the team to play better. Here&#39;s more from the NL West.</p>
<ul>
<li>Despite his hot start, <strong>Diamondbacks</strong> first baseman <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/goldspa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Paul Goldschmidt</a></strong> isn&#39;t worried about money he might end up losing as a result of his recent extension, <a href="http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/jon-heyman/22270865/did-diamondbacks-star-paul-goldschmidt-leave-75-million-on-the-table" target="_blank">CBS Sports&#39; Jon Heyman reports</a>. &quot;<em>You make the best decision at the time</em>,&quot; says Goldschmidt. &quot;<em>I love it in Phoenix. I was happy we got a deal done.
And I&#39;m happy to get it done in spring training, so it didn&#39;t become a distraction</em>.&quot; Heyman cites an anonymous agent who says that the extension could cost Goldschmidt $75MM. That seems like an exaggeration, but Goldschmidt could easily make his <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/03/diamondbacks-paul-goldschmidt-agree-to-extension.html" target="_blank">five year, $32MM deal</a> look like a bargain from the Diamondbacks&#39; perspective if he continues hitting anything resembling his current .335/.418/.645 pace. </li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gregodi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Didi Gregorius</a></strong>&#39; surprising hitting so far in the big leagues is making the Diamondbacks&#39; end of the <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/choosh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Shin-Soo Choo</a></strong> / <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bauertr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Trevor Bauer</a></strong> deal with the Reds and Indians look better with time. But <a href="http://www.azcentral.com/insiders/nickpiecoro/2013/05/18/didi-gregorius-outperforming-his-track-record-farm-report-other-stuff/" target="_blank">Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic wonders</a> whether Gregorius&#39; hitting can last. No one in the last ten years has posted a career minor-league OPS below .725 (minimum 1,900 plate appearances) and a career major-league OPS above .741 (minimum 500 plate appearances). Gregorius had a .694 career minor-league OPS; his major-league OPS through 106 plate appearances is .884.</li>
<li><strong>Rockies </strong>pitcher <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/oswalro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Roy Oswalt</a></strong> will join the Double-A Tulsa Drillers on Tuesday and will make his first start on Friday, ROOT Sports&#39; Tracy Ringolsby notes <a href="https://twitter.com/ROOTSPORTS_TR/status/336230822979964929" target="_blank">(on Twitter)</a>. Ringolsby projects Oswalt would make his fifth minor-league start June 14. Oswalt can opt out of his contract with the Rockies on <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/latest-on-roy-oswalt-contract-details-future.html" target="_blank">either June 18 or June 28</a> if he has not been added to the big-league roster. Several pieces had to fall into place: <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hochelu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Luke Hochevar</a></strong> failed to sign in 2005, leading to his being taken first overall the next year. Meanwhile, with many scouts on hand for the last pre-draft starts of Kershaw and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lincobr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Brad Lincoln</a></strong>, the former struggled while the latter dominated. Lincoln went fourth overall to the Pirates. According to White, with Longoria already off the board to the Rays, the Dodgers&#0160;<em>&quot;were hoping and praying Clayton would get to us.&quot;</em>&#0160;That&#39;s just what happened: consensus top arm <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=millean01,miller008and&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Andrew Miller</a></strong> fell, perhaps owing to signabilty concerns, and was nabbed by the Tigers at number six, leaving Kershaw for L.A.&#0160;The decision to take Kershaw caused some initial consternation when <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/linceti01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Tim Lincecum</a></strong>, taken with the tenth pick by the rival Giants, began his career with a bang. Now, of course, the Dodgers (and their fans) could not be more pleased with their selection. Here are a few more notes from the leagues&#39; western divisions:</p>
<ul>
<li>With the <strong>Rockies</strong> off to an up-and-down start, the Denver Post&#39;s Woody Paige has some <a href="http://www.denverpost.com/paige/ci_23275893/paige-rockies-better-lose-tulowitzki-gonzalez?source=rss&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+dp-sports-rockies+%28Denver+Post%3A+Sports%3A+Rockies%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader" target="_blank">harsh words</a> for the team&#39;s ownership and management. He says that, with a top-12 attendance but a bottom-7 payroll, the club appears <em>&quot;content to produce a .500 team.&quot;</em>&#0160;Among the decisions Paige disagrees with are the team&#39;s apparent intention to rely on veteran pitchers like <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/oswalro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Roy Oswalt</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/garlajo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jon Garland</a></strong> while former top prospect <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pomerdr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Drew Pomeranz</a></strong> toils in Triple-A and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chatwty01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Tyler Chatwood</a></strong> bounces between the minors and the big club. He also faults the club for going with the now-departed&#0160;<strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nelsoch01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Chris Nelson</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/brignre01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Reid Brignac</a></strong> instead of bringing up <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/arenano01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Nolan Arenado</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lemahdj01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">DJ LeMahieu</a></strong> to start the season. He warns that the Rockies could be in danger of losing the affections of stars <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/tulowtr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Troy Tulowitzki</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=gonzaca01,gonzal014car,gonzal015car&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Carlos Gonzalez</a></strong>. Unhappy superstars can always cause problems by demanding a trade, of course, but it is worth noting that Colorado has no immediate need to sell its shortstop and left fielder on staying in town. Tulowitzki is inked through at least 2020 (with a 2021 club option), while Gonzalez is under contract through 2017.</li>
<li>Despite four starters on the disabled list, the <strong>Rangers</strong> lead the American League in ERA (3.38). <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130519&amp;content_id=47969896&amp;vkey=news_mlb&amp;c_id=mlb" target="_blank">Richard Justice of MLB.com writes</a> that the success of the pitching staff is attributable to GM Jon Daniels&#39;s efforts to create a deep, talented organization. Likewise, Justice praises Daniels&#39;s confidence to enter the season without prior stalwarts <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=,youngmi02&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Michael  Young</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hamiljo03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Josh  Hamilton</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/napolmi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Mike  Napoli</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/adamsmi03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Mike  Adams</a></strong>, and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/u/ueharko01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Koji  Uehara</a></strong>, and to bring in veterans <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/berkmla01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Lance  Berkman</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pierza.01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">A.J.  Pierzynski</a></strong> on one-year deals. The 37-year-old Berkman, in particular, has hit .299/.422/.465 in 154 plate appearances as the club&#39;s primary DH.</li>
<li><strong>Astros</strong> GM Jeff Luhnow says it is still too early for the club to narrow down its likely pick with the first choice in the upcoming amateur draft, <a href="https://twitter.com/ChronAstros/status/336154305558102017" target="_blank">tweets</a> Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle. The club will likely have more clarity when it conducts staff meetings in early June, Smith further <a href="https://twitter.com/ChronAstros/status/336154407592927235" target="_blank">tweets</a>.</li>
<li>As the Astros gear up for an important draft, the club is holding a series of four regional player workouts, <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130518&amp;content_id=47921802&amp;notebook_id=47925570&amp;vkey=notebook_hou&amp;c_id=hou#47926510" target="_blank">writes Brian McTaggart of MLB.com</a>. According to scouting director Mike Elias, the workouts will allow the club to <em>&quot;get up close and personal with the process and see some guys further down the list.&quot;</em>&#0160;He further notes that the process was utilized with success by the Cardinals: <em>&quot;It really helps those players get drafted and helps us make better decisions in the draft.&quot;</em></li>
<li>Meanwhile, Houston is beginning to see returns from its efforts to develop a pipeline of talent from the Dominican Republic. According to another <a href="https://twitter.com/ChronAstros/status/336154407592927235" target="_blank">tweet</a> from Smith, Luhnow is excited about the first Dominican prospect that the club&#39;s efforts produced. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/cisnejo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jose Cisnero</a></strong>, a right-hander that was originally signed in 2007, checked in at fifteenth on Baseball America&#39;s ranking of the club&#39;s prospects and has been pitching from the club&#39;s bullpen this year.&#0160;</li>

<p>For a Yankees team that <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/18/sports/baseball/as-injuries-mount-joe-girardi-still-believes-in-yankees.html" target="_blank">continues</a> to be hit with new injuries, Brignac will provide flexibility. He joins a middle-infield mix headlined by <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/canoro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Robinson Cano</a></strong> but otherwise featuring less-than-inspiring names like <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gonzaal03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Alberto Gonzalez</a>&#0160;</strong>and&#0160;<strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nixja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jayson Nix</a></strong>. Brignac follows third baseman <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nelsoch01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Chris Nelson</a></strong> as a Rockies castoff that ended up in New York this year. He will hope to stick longer than Nelson, who <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/yankees-designate-chris-nelson-for-assignment.html" target="_blank">only wore pinstripes</a> for 37 plate appearances.</p></div>

<li>The <strong>Mariners</strong> have shown &quot;heavy interest&quot; in outfielder <strong>Greifer Andrade</strong>.&#0160; The 6&#39;1&quot;, 185-pound Andrade is expected to receive a contract worth more than $1MM with whichever team eventually signs him.&#0160; Andrade is a right-hander who profiles as a corner outfielder, and scouts vary in their opinions of his long-term potential --- some believe he is one of the top internationals prospects available, while others have doubts about his throwing arm and ability to hit for power in the Major Leagues.</li>
<li>The <strong>Rockies</strong> have been looking at shortstop <strong>Carlos Herrera</strong>.&#0160; One international scouting director projects Herrera will be &quot;<em>an offensive,
top-of-the-lineup guy with a really good idea at the plate</em>.&quot;&#0160; Badler says some scouts think Herrera can handle playing shortstop over the long term and Herrera also has above-average speed and is a solid contact hitter, if lacking in power right now.</li>
<li>The <strong>Mets</strong> have been connected to <strong>Ali Sanchez</strong>, a catcher who is regarded as a solid defender though he &quot;doesn’t have a lot of power now and scouts were mixed on his bat.&quot;&#0160; Badler predicts Sanchez will sign for a little under $800K.</li>
<li>The <strong>Royals</strong> have been linked to left-handed hitting outfielder <strong>Cristhian Vasquez</strong>, regarded as one of Venezuela&#39;s best young bats.&#0160; While Vasquez has gap power, Badler notes that some scouts aren&#39;t sure if Vasquez has enough pop to be an everyday left fielder (he&#39;s limited to left field due to a lack of arm strength).&#0160; Badler thinks Vasquez will sign for around $800K.</li>

<p>As witnessed by the lists, it&#39;s an accomplishment for any organization to have one good catching prospect in a minor league system, let alone two. The New York Yankees organization is enviable in that regard. Sanchez, 20, has been a mainstay on the top prospects lists since he signed out of Venezuela in 2009 as a 16-year-old amateur free agent. He showed up as high as 42nd overall on the three lists mentioned above, and no lower than 57th. The offensive-minded catcher&#0160;has impressive offensive skills, including plus raw power. His ascent through the Yankees system can be best described as slow and steady.</p>
<p>Signed the same year as Sanchez, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=murphy029joh&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">J.R. Murphy</a></strong> was selected out of the high school ranks in the second round of the amateur draft and he&#39;s just beginning to receive the attention he deserves.&#0160;A front office contact who is familiar with the catching prospect told MLBTR that Murphy &quot;was signed as a player [people] thought would hit and might be able to catch.&quot;</p>
<p>The 22-year-old prospect&#0160;has flashed offensive potential in the past with good control of the strike zone, gap power and the ability to hit for a respectable average -- but inconsistency has been his downfall at the plate. So far this year, the Florida native is hitting .308 with 12 extra base hits, as well as 16 walks and 17 strikeouts in 28 games.</p>
<p>During the early stages of his pro career, Murphy &#0160;struggled with receiving the ball and throwing out runners, while also dabbling with the idea of playing third base. He turned the corner in his development behind the plate in 2012 with his success rate at gunning down base runners jumping to more than 30 percent for the first time. So far in 2013, he&#39;s just shy of throwing out 50 percent of baserunners while playing at Double-A, one step ahead of his fellow catching prospect.</p>
<p>The talent evaluator&#0160;who spoke with MLBTR said the Yankees&#0160;organization thinks very highly of Murphy. &quot;<em>Due to his diligence, ability and the focused hard work of our coaches, he has become a defensive plus. He is on track to become a quality major league catcher,&quot; he said. &quot;He receives the ball well and is an above-average thrower. He&#0160;has the intelligence and game awareness to manage a game at the major league level.</em>&quot;</p>
<p>Currently in his fifth pro season, Murphy will need to be added to the 40-man roster by the November deadline to be protected from the annual Rule 5 draft. If added, he&#39;ll be granted three option years that will allow him to be shuttled between the majors and the minors during that time frame.</p>
<p><strong>Houston Astros</strong></p>
<p>The 10th overall selection in the 2008 amateur draft, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/castrja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jason Castro</a></strong>&#39;s career development has been slowed by trips to the disabled list. In fact, he lost the entire 2011 season to a serious knee injury. Perhaps hampered by the lost playing time, the Astros&#39; starting catcher&#39;s offense has not developed as hoped. Still just 25, the Stanford alum has time to jump-start his bat, but Houston has accumulated some solid catching depth in the past year.</p>
<p>Acquired last year from Toronto in a 10-player deal that sent <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/happja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">J.A. Happ</a></strong>&#0160;and two other pitchers to Toronto,&#0160;catching&#0160;prospect <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=perezca01,perez-010car,perez-011car,perez-012car&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Carlos Perez</a></strong> has enjoyed the change of scenery.&#0160;After spending five years in Rookie ball and Low-A ball with the conservative&#0160;Blue Jays player development program, the Astros loosened the reins on the young player and he responded favorably. In less than a year, the 22-year-old Venezuela native reached Triple-A and is hitting above .300 while playing steady defense. Houston will almost certainly want to protect him prior to this year&#39;s Rule 5 draft at the Baseball Winter Meetings.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=heinem000tyl&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Tyler Heineman</a></strong> flew under the radar a bit as an eighth round draft pick out of the University of California, Los Angeles in 2012. Since signing, though, he&#39;s done nothing but hit. The switch-hitter posted a .352 batting average with 26 walks and 12 strikeouts in 55 games during his short-season debut last year. Jumped all the way to High-A to open 2013, Heineman has hit .329 with just eight strikeouts in 23 games.</p>
<p>Not flashy and with below-average power, the catching prospect shares a similar profile to that of seven-year big leaguer <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hanigry01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Ryan Hanigan</a></strong> of the Reds. The big challenge for the backstop is to continue polishing his defensive skills to meet the high standards set at the big league level. Time is on Heineman&#39;s side as he doesn&#39;t have to be added to the 40-man roster until after the 2015 season, which would then buy him three option years.</p>
<p><strong>Toronto Blue Jays</strong></p>
<p>The Blue Jays opened the 2012 season with the most impressive collection of catching depth in baseball with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/arencjp01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">J.P. Arencibia</a></strong> at the major league level and a plethora of impressive prospects including d&#39;Arnaud, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gomesya01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Yan Gomes</a></strong>, Perez, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=jimene002ant&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">A.J. Jimenez</a></strong>, and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=nessy-001san&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Santiago Nessy</a></strong>. Since midway through the 2012 season,&#0160;Toronto has traded away d&#39;Arnaud (Mets), Gomes (Indians) and Perez (Astros) in an effort to improve the pitching depth at the big league level.</p>
<p>The two remaining catchers have the talent to be considered among the club&#39;s Top 10 best prospects. Unfortunately, both have also been bitten by the injury bug. Jimenez blew out his elbow during the 2012 season and underwent Tommy John&#0160;surgery. The club has been cautious with him in 2013 and he&#39;s already missed a little time after experiencing soreness in his surgically-repaired elbow. Nessy received his first full-season assignment in 2013 and was off to a respectable start before suffering a concussion while trying to breakup a double play at second base. He has plus raw power and has made huge strides on the defensive side of his game.</p>
<p><strong>Prospect Tidbits</strong>: Seattle&#39;s Zunino was considered the cream-of-the-crop when it came to eligible catching prospects in the 2012 amateur draft. Fast forward to 2013 and the University of Florida alum has already reached Triple-A. Two other highly-drafted catchers from 2012 are making names for themselves with solid play so far this season.</p>
<p>Perhaps the hottest hitter in the South Atlantic League, the Mets&#39; <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=plawec000kev&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Kevin Plawecki</a></strong> (drafted 35th overall) is currently hitting .374 through 35 games in Low-A ball. He&#39;s also flashed power with 25 of his 49 hits going for extra bases. If he keeps up this pace, a promotion to High-A or Double-A should be in the cards. Rockies catching prospect <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=murphto02,murphy004tom&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Tom Murphy</a></strong> (third round) has appeared in only 24 games thanks to a brief visit to the disabled list, but he&#39;s hitting .357 with 17 of his 30 hits going for extra bases. Like Plawecki, Murphy is probably too advanced at the plate for Low-A ball.</p>
<p>Another 2012 draft pick, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=elande001jos&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Josh Elander</a></strong>, attracted attention as a second- or third-round talent as a college catcher but questions surrounding his ability to stick behind the dish caused him to slide to the sixth round where he was nabbed by the Atlanta Braves. After catching briefly in 2012, the prospect was moved out from behind the plate and has played 31 games in left field in 2013. The move has certainly agreed with his offense, as he&#39;s hitting .314 with an above-average power output.</p></div>

Cameron adds that such a tactic is highly risky, as the No. 1 overall slot has produced <em>significantly</em> more value (in terms of WAR) than even the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the draft, historically speaking. He does concede that in years without a consensus No. 1 talent, the strategy can make a lot of sense. Here are Wednesday&#39;s draft-related tidbits...</p>
<ul>
<li>The <strong>Marlins</strong>&#0160;are likely to focus on college players early on, specifically position players, <a href="http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/05/15/3397733/college-position-player-is-likely.html" target="_blank">writes Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald</a>. Spencer writes that the Fish will likely select San Diego third baseman/outfielder <strong>Kris Bryant</strong>&#0160;or UNC third baseman <strong>Colin Moran</strong>&#0160;if either is available at No. 6. If both are gone, they could shift to&#0160;Nevada right-hander <strong>Braden Shipley</strong>&#0160;and target a bat later on.</li>
<li>The <strong>Rockies</strong>&#0160;are also eyeing <strong>Kris Bryant</strong>&#0160;at the No. 3 spot, <a href="https://twitter.com/TroyRenck/status/334549597731033090" target="_blank">tweets Troy Renck of the Denver Post</a>. Bryant, regarded as the most powerful bat in the draft, has been popping up in rumors more and more as the draft nears.&#0160;<a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/05/draft-notes-bryant-gonzalez-mayos-top-100.html" target="_blank">Some feel</a> he has No. 1 overall potential.</li>
<li>After focusing heavily on high school pitching in last year&#39;s draft, the <strong>Padres</strong>&#0160;are likely to focus on bats, assistant GM of player personnel Chad MacDonald <a href="http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/may/13/padres-macdonald-draft-pitchers/" target="_blank">tells Chris Jenkins of the San Diego Union-Tribune</a>. Particularly, the Friars will be looking for middle infield help.</li>
<li>MacDonald has scouted prep right-hander <strong>Kohl Stewart</strong>, and the <strong>Padres</strong> are enamored with his &quot;electric&quot; talent, but he&#39;s very unlikely to be on the board by the No. 13 selection. <em>&quot;He&#39;s the best high school arm in the country,&quot; </em>said MacDonald.</li>

Many in the game have been turned off by Oswalt&#39;s late starts, his selectivity over where he will pitch and his inability to mesh with what was reportedly a very positive Rangers clubhouse in 2012.</p>
<p>According to Heyman, Oswalt wants to pitch beyond 2013, and that includes joining future teammates in Spring Training rather than sitting out the first month or two of the season as he&#39;s done in 2012-13.</p>
<p>Heyman also reports that the Rockies weren&#39;t the only team to show interest in Oswalt this time around, but the veteran rebuffed &quot;a couple&quot; of other offers to eventually sign with Colorado.</p></div>

<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>You can&#39;t begin a month much better than <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/odorija01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jake Odorizzi</a></strong> did during his start on May 5th against the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox. The young pitching prospect combined with three relievers to no-hit Boston&#39;s minor league affiliate. Odorizzi worked seven innings while walking four batters and striking out three. He was removed from the game early due to workload limitations. Relievers <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=deloss002fra&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Frank De Los Santos</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=yates-001kir&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Kirby Yates</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/belivje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jeff Beliveau</a></strong> preserved the no-no.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/rays/no-hitter-for-triple-a-durham----odorizzi-3-relievers/2119338" target="_self">Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times</a> spoke with Odorizzi, who said he had all his weapons working during the game. &quot;<em>Everything was going my way. The defense was good behind me. It seemed everything was hit right at someone. Just kind of one of those days where everything goes your way.</em>&quot; He has now held opponents scoreless in each of his last two starts (12 innings).</p>
<p>Although it&#39;s easy to get excited about Odorizzi&#39;s quick start to the season, the hype comes with caveats. The young hurler has always been an extreme flyball pitcher and his groundball rate is well below average on the year at slightly more than 22%.&#0160;</p>
<p>Odorizzi&#39;s pitching repertoire includes solid stuff but he lacks &quot;plus stuff.&quot; He has average control and above-average command of his offerings: an 87-92 mph fastball, slider, curveball and change-up. In pre-season top prospects lists, <a href="http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8891538/mlb-top-100-prospects-2012-jurickson-profar-dylan-bundy-more" target="_blank">Keith Law of ESPN</a> (68th), <a href="http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/2013/02/2013-top-100-prospects-list/" target="_blank">Baseball America</a> (92nd), and <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2013/" target="_blank">MLB.com</a> (42nd)&#0160;all ranked Odorizzi amongst the top 100 in the game. Baseball America&#39;s scouting report referred to the hurler&#39;s ceiling as that of a No. 3 or 4 starter.</p>
<p>Originally selected 32nd overall by the Milwaukee Brewers during that 2008 amateur draft, the Illinois native has been traded twice in his young career. He was sent to the Kansas City Royals in December 2010 during the <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/greinza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Zack Greinke</a></strong> deal. Almost exactly two years later, Odorizzi was flipped to Tampa Bay in the <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/shielja02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">James Shields</a></strong>/<strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/daviswa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Wade Davis</a></strong> swap. If Tampa Bay -- specifically its pitching staff with the fifth worst ERA in baseball -- continues to struggle into the second half of 2013, the pitching prospect could become a big-league option later in the year.</p>
<p><strong>Prospect Tidbits:</strong> Selected 46th overall in the 2012 amateur draft, Colorado Rockies pitching prospect <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=butler001edw&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Eddie Butler</a></strong> is off to a hot start to his career. Beginning the 2013 season in A ball, he&#39;s allowed just 18 hits in 41 innings of work. If the Radford University alum continues to pitch like this he could make quick work of the minor leagues.....The Miami Marlins brought in a lot of minor league talent during last November&#39;s shocking trade with the Toronto Blue Jays. Despite that, prospects originally drafted by the club continue to see their values soar. Outfielder <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=yelich001chr&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Christian Yelich</a></strong> went 5-for-6 with two triples and a home run on May 8th. As <a href="http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130508&amp;content_id=46931376&amp;fext=.jsp&amp;vkey=news_milb&amp;sid=milb" target="_self">MiLB.com&#39;s Ashley Marshall</a> tells us, the performance also caught the attention of his manager. <em>&quot;It was one of the most impressive displays of a young hitter I have ever seen,&quot;</em> <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/barkean01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Andy Barkett</a></strong> said. It raised Yelich&#39;s average to .343 on the year.....Baltimore&#39;s <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bundydy01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Dylan Bundy</a></strong> reached the big leagues in his first full pro season in 2012 but his development in &#39;13 was halted by an injury. The bad news gives his Oklahoma high school opponent and friend <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=bradle000arc&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Archie Bradley</a></strong> a chance to close the gap between the two a little bit. After five dominating starts in the potent California League (43 strikeouts, 1.26 ERA in 28 2/3 innings), the Arizona Diamondbacks promoted the pitching prospect to Double-A and he&#39;s struck out 11 batters with a 1.13 ERA in eight innings over two starts.</p></div>

<li>The <strong>Phillies </strong>recently <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/04/phillies-designate-humberto-quintero-for-assignment.html" target="_blank">designated</a> catcher <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/q/quinthu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Humberto  Quintero</a></strong> for assignment, but they want him to clear waivers, <a href="http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/20130429_Phils_hoping_Humberto_Quintero_clears_waivers.html" target="_blank">Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer writes</a>.
 Now that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=ruizca01,ruiz--003car&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Carlos Ruiz</a></strong> is returning from his suspension, the Phillies
have settled on <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kratzer01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Erik Kratz</a></strong> to be his backup. But they want more veteran
catching depth in their organization, and they value Quintero&#39;s big-league experience. &quot;<em>There&#39;s a chance he could still be with us, and selfishly, we hope he is</em>,&quot; says assistant GM Scott Proefrock.</li>
<li>The <strong>Rockies </strong>are waiting to see what happens to infielder <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nelsoch01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Chris  Nelson</a></strong>, who they <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/04/rockies-designate-chris-nelson-for-assignment.html" target="_blank">designated for assignment</a> on Sunday, <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130428&amp;content_id=46051926&amp;notebook_id=46067184&amp;vkey=notebook_col&amp;c_id=col" target="_blank">according to MLB.com&#39;s Thomas Harding</a>. Nelson was the Rockies&#39; first-round pick in the 2004 Draft. &quot;<em>It&#39;s important to honor Nellie and what he&#39;s meant to this
organization</em>,&quot; says Rockies manager <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/weisswa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Walt  Weiss</a></strong>. &quot;<em>Personally, my relationship goes beyond player-manager. They brought
 him in and worked him out before the Draft, and I was out there taking
ground balls with him in front of our entire scouting department, and I
was with him in our Minor League system</em>.&quot; </li>

        <summary>The Rockies have designated infielder Chris Nelson for assignment, Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports. Nelson was told about the transaction following the Rockies&#39; 3-2 loss to the Diamondbacks on Saturday night. In a corresponding move, the Rockies have called up Nolan Arenado from Triple-A, according to MLB.com&#39;s Thomas Harding (Twitter link). Nelson had a .242/.282/.318 line over 68 PA as the Rockies&#39; regular third baseman this season. The 27-year-old was the ninth overall pick of the 2004 draft and owned a career slash line of .284/.327/.427 in 593 PA from 2010-12. Nelson has played mostly third and second...</summary>

<p>It was only a matter of time before the Rockies called up Arenado, the club&#39;s top prospect and the 52nd-best prospect in the sport according to Baseball America&#39;s preseason rankings.&#0160; Arenado, who recently turned 22, has posted an .818 OPS in five minor league seasons, including a 1.059 OPS over 75 PA at Triple-A this season.&#0160; His stock somewhat dropped after only an average season at Double-A in 2012 and the Rockies also had questions about Arenado&#39;s maturity level, but the third baseman impressed the club both on and off the field during Spring Training.&#0160; The right-handed hitting Arenado was a second-round pick for the Rockies in the 2009 draft.</p></div>

<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>ESPN&#39;s Jim Bowden, a former GM of both the Reds and Expos/Nationals, recently took a look at Frank Wren&#39;s rise to general manager of the <strong>Braves</strong>. Within his ESPN Insider piece, <a href="http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/the-gms-office/post/_/id/6401/the-next-generation-of-gms" target="_blank">Bowden identifies</a> three front office executives who, like Wren, are being groomed as successors to their current GMs. He also identifies three candidates who will likely become GMs in other organizations. Here are some highlights from the piece and other GM news...</p>
<ul>
<li>Bowden feels that <strong>Rockies </strong>senior VP Bill Geivett, <strong>Tigers </strong>VP/assistant GM Al Avila&#0160;and <strong>Athletics </strong>assistant GM David Forst&#0160;are all next in line to become the GM of their respective franchises. Geivett, in particular, is already <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/08/rockies-to-restructure-front-office.html" target="_blank">handling the day-to-day operations</a>, and Bowden feels it&#39;s just a matter of time before he&#39;s given the official title of general manager.</li>
<li>Bowden asked present GMs around the game who the top GM candidates outside of their own organizations were. The results, in order, were&#0160;<strong>Rangers</strong>&#0160;assistant GM Thad Levine, <strong>Cubs</strong>&#0160;VP of scouting and player development Jason McLeod and <strong>Marlins</strong>&#0160;assistant GM Dan Jennings. Bowden notes that each is blocked for one reason or another but would have plenty of interest from other clubs seeking a new GM.</li>
<li>Jack Zduriencik&#39;s time as GM of the <strong>Mariners</strong>&#0160;may be running out, <a href="http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/Mariners-GM-may-find-his-time-is-up-soon-042513" target="_blank">writes Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports</a>. The Mariners once again find themselves last in the American League in runs scored -- the same place they&#39;ve been for the previous four years under Zduriencik&#39;s watch. <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/smoakju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Justin Smoak</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/ackledu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Dustin Ackley</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=monteje01,monter002jes&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jesus Montero</a></strong> have yet to establish themselves as big leaguers, and the trades of <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/leecl02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Cliff Lee</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/fistedo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Doug Fister</a></strong> look poor in hindsight. Rosenthal notes that <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/i/iwakuhi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Hisashi Iwakuma</a></strong> is a coup for Zduriencik, and that help is close with <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=zunino001mic&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Mike Zunino</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=frankl001nic&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Nick Franklin</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=paxton001jam&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">James Paxton</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=hultze001dan&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Danny Hultzen</a></strong> at Triple-A. A breakthrough is needed soon, however, and Zduriencik conceded that he knows it.</li>
