Scott Rolen Rumors
By Tim Dierkes [October 20, 2008 at 2:07pm CST]
Links for Monday... Tim Brown and Peter Abraham offer their takes on the top free agents. A note from Abraham - if Daisuke Matsuzaka finishes top three in the AL Cy Young vote, he'll get an extra $2MM in each of the '09 and '10 seasons. The Mariners could hire their new GM as soon as tomorrow. Geoff Baker discussed the merits of the four candidates in two recent posts. Jason Varitek was mum on his future last night. Joe Frisaro has the Marlins' 2009 payroll in the $30-35MM range. They have 15 arbitration-eligible players. I came across an interesting...

Let's round up some rumors and links. Not only is Shin-Soo Choo out of options, but he's recovering from Tommy John surgery and may have to join the South Korean military. Brandon Inge sat out a demanding drill on Friday, causing Tom Gage to wonder if trade talks are ongoing. Dave Dombrowski spoke on the topic recently, saying all the right things about Inge. Kyle Lohse is not interested in a minor league deal or playing in another country. He's still waiting by the phone though. Funny anecdote involving J.P. Ricciardi's son. Terry Francona was extended through 2011, with club...

As a player traded in the middle of a multiyear deal, new Blue Jays third baseman Scott Rolen has the right to opt for free agency or demand a trade after one year with Toronto. This right has since been eliminated but players who signed their deals before October '06 are grandfathered in. Troy Glaus has the same right. The stipulations make it less likely for players to opt for free agency or demand a trade. If the player chooses free agency he has to wait until mid-March to leave and also give up three years of free agent eligibility...

According to Buster Olney, Troy Glaus told J.P. Ricciardi several months ago that he'd like to be traded. Apparently he really wanted to get away from artificial turf. Olney says Ricciardi made no promises, and set about finding good value for Glaus. Glaus had wanted to play for St. Louis for years, and Scott Rolen's rift with Tony La Russa created an opportunity

UPDATE, 1-14-08 at 5:44pm: And it's official, news conference Wednesday. UPDATE, 1-14-08 at 2:15pm: Both players passed their physicals, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. This could be officially a done deal later today. By the way, the Belleville News-Democrat discusses some of the failed Rolen scenarios here (including one that involved Jhonny Peralta, Cliff Lee, and Anthony Reyes). UPDATE, 1-14-08 at 10:57am: A small amount of money will change hands - the Jays will send $1.8MM to the Cards, pending commissioner approval. Given that Rolen has more money on his contract, it's surprising to see the..

According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, talks between the Giants and free agent third baseman Pedro Feliz are stalling. The parties have now passed a Giants-imposed deadline, apparently because the Giants wouldn't go three years on him. Even a two-year offer would be a mistake. Bringing him back in general seems an odd idea. Schulman suggests that Scott Rolen or Joe Crede could now become trade targets for Brian Sabean. What is this team's direction

Here are today's random rumor tidbits. The Rox are interested in Marcus Giles for their second base opening. Giles was awful last year, they should just try something internal. Other Rockies notes: contracts with Kip Wells and Luis Vizcaino aren't quite finalized, and they may ink Victor Zambrano to a minor league deal. UPDATE: Wells, plus Mark Redman, are done deals. The Pirates still have their eye on Shawn Chacon and Chad Durbin. That''ll put butts in the seats. Also, Jake of Bucco Blog weighs in on a new Pirates hire. Speaking of Durbin, did he comment on this blog..

Ken Rosenthal checks in with the latest hot stove buzz around baseball. Johan Santana is Boston's only target - they're not after Dan Haren or any other starter. The talks keep slugging along. For what it's worth, Curt Schilling expects the Red Sox to get him. 36 year-old first baseman Alex Cabrera is a sleeper power threat among free agents. The former Rockie, Cub, and Diamondback has been mashing in Japan since 2001. The Nationals don't have any room for him but want him anyway. Rosenthal says A.L. clubs are looking at him as a DH candidate, also. Cabrera hit..

In an article today, MLB.com's Ken Gurnick suggests that the Dodgers may be reluctant to trade for Scott Rolen due to his history with former Phillies manager Larry Bowa. Bowa is the Dodgers' new third base coach. Perhaps not news to many of you, but it's an angle that hadn't occurred to me. Those two probably can't work together. Gurnick says that with Andruw Jones in tow, the Dodgers are inclined to use internal options at third base anyway

UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 8:46pm: Tony La Russa had some choice words concerning Rolen tonight. Maybe they can't coexist, after all. FROM 12-5-07 at 8:26pm: Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch recently appeared on the radio. Colleague Bernie Miklasz transcribed it. Strauss suggests the chances of Scott Rolen being traded are around 20%. Tony La Russa might be able to co-exist with him, even if they don't like each other. Still, the Milwaukee talks may be revisited. Strauss believes the Cards are sniffing around on Erik Bedard. MLB.com's Jim Molony spoke of their interest yesterday. The Cardinals are revisiting Miguel..

Iguchi is willing to play third base and is looking for a two-year deal with an option. FROM 12-4-07 at 10:59pm: MLB.com's Adam McCalvy runs down the Brewers' day. As you know, the Brewers are out of the running for Scott Rolen. This is due to a number of factors. McCalvy quotes an ESPN rumor of Chris Capuano and Bill Hall for Rolen, which I somehow missed. I..

He thinks the two teams will revisit these discussions in the future. FROM 12-5-07 at 7:29am: As usual, Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has all the insight into the Cardinals' situation. It doesn't look like Scott Rolen is going anywhere before the Meetings end, and GM John Mozeliak may have to start the season with him. The talks with the Brewers were disheartening, apparently. The Cards don't think there should be a..

According to ESPN's Jayson Stark, the Angels are telling teams they have no urgency to go out and get a third baseman after missing out on Miguel Cabrera. Ken Rosenthal has some new rumors for us. The Dodgers lead the chase for Scott Rolen, with the Angels also in the mix. The Giants' Brian Sabean denied interest. The D'Backs view the Athletics' requests for Dan Haren to be quite excessive. Talks between the Padres and Cubs for Mark Prior have cooled. UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 4:18pm: Haudricourt says the Brewers-Rolen deal croaked over something, but not the intra-division part. Didn't make sense in the first place. Also, Doug Melvin expressed his disinterest in Pedro Feliz. FROM 12-4-07 at 2:45pm: You don't need Insider to read this one. ESPN's Jayson Stark says the Brewers talks with the Cards about Scott Rolen have cooled. The Cards are hesitant about trading Rolen within the division. It's weird because it's not like that's a new development, the intra-division factor. The Brewers had already worked who was paying what and agreed to send Chris Capuano and a..

What, you thought the Brewers were dead set on Scott Rolen? Not so, according to Tom Haudricourt. They're considering the following options at third base, mostly because the left field options are worse. Joe Crede - I can see this one happening, Doug Melvin and Kenny Williams get along. And Kenny really has nowhere to play Crede. Hank Blalock - Trading Blalock now is generally seen as selling low, so this seems unlikely. Pedro Feliz - I'm going to disagree with Haudricourt that Feliz is intriguing. Andy LaRoche - Now this one is intriguing, hitting the Dodgers up for LaRoche...

UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 9:38am: Tom Haudricourt confirms that the Brewers will have access to Rolen's medical records. That the Brewers will take a look indicates they are probably serious about Rolen. FROM 12-4-07 at 12:14am: Joe Strauss has a new one in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, presumably for the Tuesday morning edition. The Cards have already met twice with the Brewers to talk about Scott Rolen. They're providing medical information to the Brewers, and appear flexible on the amount of salary they need to cover. Teams interested in Rolen can speak directly to the third baseman's doctor and surgeon. Strauss..

Ken Rosenthal never sleeps, and he has a few new tidbits early Tuesday morning. The Cards are reluctant to trade Scott Rolen within the division to the Brewers. A lot of that going on lately - the Cubs like Josh Hamilton, the Jays like Erik Bedard. Hank Blalock is a popular name around the lobby. Despite the various squashed rumors Rosenthal says he would be a good fit for the Cardinals, Phillies, or Dodgers. The Phils plan on taking a look at Kris Benson when he throws for teams a couple of weeks from now

UPDATE, 12-3-07 at 6:38pm: Tom Haudricourt breaks down the Rolen to Milwaukee situation in detail. Talks are ongoing but Doug Melvin doesn't think there's anything serious yet. FROM 12-3-07 at 5:42pm: The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss has an update from the Winter Meetings. Strauss notes, as Ken Rosenthal did, that Scott Rolen and Pedro Feliz have the same agents. Sounds like there's nothing to the idea of Blalock to St. Louis, but the Dodgers rumor is picking up steam. FROM 12-3-07 at 4:30pm: Here's a good one from Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. Grant admits this is dangerous, unsubstantiated rumormongering. Is there any other kind? The buzz is Hank Blalock to the Cardinals for Scott Rolen and Chris Duncan. Apparently intra-division trading is no problem for John Mozeliak and Doug Melvin. Here are two takes on the rumored Scott Rolen to Milwaukee deal. Tom Haudricourt talked to Doug Melvin and learned that nothing is imminent with the Cards. What's more, Melvin hasn't talked to the Cards for weeks. Hmmm. This trade would require the Cards eating some salary. Theoretically Ryan Braun would move to left field to accomodate Rolen. The Brewers could send over Chris Capuano and might try to act like Kevin Mench would sweeten the deal. Buster Olney said this morning that the Cards "have had their..

MLB.com's Adam McCalvy posted a Brewers article yesterday that's worthy of discussion. One reliever Doug Melvin has considered that I hadn't heard before: Eddie Guardado. Hey, at least he'd come cheap. Players like Rickie Weeks, J.J. Hardy, and Corey Hart won't be moved. No surprise there. McCalvy says Melvin confirmed having internal discussions about Scott Rolen. Would John Mozeliak trade him within the division? More importantly, would the Brewers take on the money and injury risk? The obvious match would be to send a starter over to St. Louis for Rolen. Which starters are available? Though you can never have..

Ah, a new Rumblings and Grumblings from Jayson Stark. Let's dig in. It sounds like the Yankees would discuss Phil Hughes and the Red Sox might part with one of Ellsbury/Lester/Buchholz to acquire Johan Santana. The acquiring team would need an extension window though. The Mets are in on Santana big-time and would have to give up Carlos Gomez and then some. If the Twins do trade Santana, they would probably hang onto Matt Garza. But otherwise Garza could be traded for a young hitter, as we've been hearing. The Fish want four 0-3 players for Miguel Cabrera, pretty much..

Finally some Giants rumors! I know a few fans have been clamoring for the team to join the hot stove rumblings. Andrew Baggarly has an article here and Henry Schulman has one here. Let's discuss. The Giants have no one to play third base. Kevin Frandsen could technically do it but they prefer him at second. Thankfully, they will pass on Pedro Feliz. Feliz - get this - wants a three year deal. He's on the Brewers' radar, by the way. Miguel Cabrera is one option, though Baggarly doesn't see the Giants offering up Tim Lincecum to jump into the..

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak confirmed this morning that third baseman Scott Rolen is indeed available in trade. The topic definitely came up at the GM meetings. It seems that Rolen and Tony La Russa just can't get along. Rolen would be up for waiving his no-trade clause for a competitive team. He's owed $36MM over three years, probably a touch more than he could get on the open market right now. But not terribly different. Joe Strauss's article says the Cardinals are reluctant to eat salary and want full value in return. Who needs a third baseman? The Red Sox,..

Here are some hot stove links to digest this evening. The New York Post's Joel Sherman runs down some third base options for the Yankees. He feels that Scott Rolen, Bill Hall, Freddy Sanchez, and a few others might be reasonable options. Bernie Miklasz says there's no indication any team is truly interested in Rolen, though Randy Youngman suggests the Angels may look at him. Youngman also believes the Halos have slight interest in Carlos Silva, if he can be had at less than $10MM annually. Not bloody likely. Jon Paul Morosi thinks the Tigers could go after the Pirates'..

Buster Olney is a trusted source for baseball info if there ever was one. Here's an excerpt from his blog today: The Cardinals are shopping Scott Rolen. Heard on Thursday that the Twins and Cardinals are talking about a deal for Rolen, who is owed $33 million over the next three years. The Cardinals presumably are asking for pitching in return, but because of the money involved and Rolen's injury history, they might not get a lot, because this is more of a salary dump. On the other hand, Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune is obviously very close to..

According to Ken Davidoff of Newsday, the Yankees aren't likely to trade for Joe Crede. They're aiming for bigger fish like Mike Lowell, Adrian Beltre, Miguel Cabrera, and Scott Rolen. Garrett Atkins has been deemed unavailable. Additionally, Kenny Williams hopes to deal Crede relatively quickly and the Yankees are in no rush to fill their third base vacancy. Maybe the Phillies will jump into the fray for Crede. Lowell at least won't involve giving up young talent. But there are some questions about how he'd hit away from Fenway. And we're talking four or even five years to lure him...

Two of my favorite local blogs have good hot stove posts for us today as part of Odds and Ends. This info jives with the recent info from Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald. While Kuroda recently filed for free agency, he's open to offers from MLB and Hiroshima. Here's an interesting article from the Yahoo columnist that includes his selections for most overpaid players so far this year. Some of the blurbs are downright painful, like the reminder that Jason Kendall is earning more than $13M for this year's "production." I bring it up because overpaid players are so often a source of trade rumors on a thin market. After all, do you think it would take much to pry Kendall away from the A's? Shea Hillenbrand away from the Angels? It seems that clubs falling in the standings with money to burn (Yankees, anyone?) can always take..

Looking for a trade rumor, and don't care whether it's been confirmed in any way? We got you covered. A couple of Cards fans have emailed me this thread from Bernie's Pressbox. St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Bernie Miklasz throws this scenario out for debate: Wilson Betemit and one of Matt Kemp/Andre Ethier for Scott Rolen. Now, according to Bernie, there's nothing concrete and he's just talking. Still, it's interesting to ponder. Factors to consider: Rolen is owed $12MM annually through 2010. He'd have to be convinced to waive his full no-trade clause. Although maybe he wouldn't mind playing under a..
