MLB.com's Dick Kaegel reports that the Royals have designated shortstop Tony Pena Jr. for assignment to make room on the roster for the recently acquired Yuniesky Betancourt. Pena has hit just .156-.178-.192 in 288 plate appearances since the start of the 2008 season.

Time to round up today's links. Hank Steinbrenner admits Barry Bonds' name will be mentioned at today's meeting of Yankees execs. Mark Cuban is a finalist to buy the Cubs. Pirates president Frank Coonelly expressed frustration with the Pedro Alvarez negotiations, in the first public comments on those talks. Dejan Kovacevic's source says the Pirates aren't requiring two prospects for Xavier Nady or Damaso Marte. One elite prospect would work. Mark Kotsay wonders if he'll be traded this year. Yesterday we learned that the Royals had a list of 20 shortstops in their sights; today they made a deal. Dayton Moore nabbed Tony Pena Jr. from his former employer, the Braves. Pena, 26, is the son of the former Royals manager. I'm not sure he'll be of much value offensively, but at least he'll play good defense. Pena's PECOTA calls for a Berroa-like .244/.279/.337 line
