Yorvit Torrealba Rumors

Rockies Talking Trade With Reds

8:50pm: Reds GM Walt Jocketty says nothing is close with the Rockies; he's talked to a lot of clubs. His snide remark: "They all didn't allow it to get out." Jocketty talked to the Rockies about Matt Holliday, but it was a short discussion. 7:37pm: Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News says the Reds have definite interest in Atkins, but not Torrealba or Taveras. The Reds like the idea of adding Atkins' righthanded bat. They don't like Torrealba's price and Taveras' inability to get on base. Ringolsby says the Phillies, Angels, and Twins are also after Atkins. 3:28pm: Troy...   Continue Reading

Rockies Rumors: Atkins, Holliday, Barmes

Let's see what we can find in three new columns from Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post today. I wrote last week that the Rockies would come in a bit under $80MM after arbitration raises. Renck pegs it around $75MM. The team's plan is to shop Garrett Atkins for a frontline starter. If the interest is not there (why would it be?), they could switch to Matt Holliday. Renck ponders Matt Cain and a prospect to Colorado, but that is a lot to give up for one year of Holliday. Plus the Giants are not looking to add an...   Continue Reading

Carroll's Latest: Torrealba, Wheeler, Dunn

Here's the latest from Will Carroll at Baseball Prospectus. Some of this info is from this afternoon, so I apologize for the tardiness. The Rockies may still move a lesser player like Yorvit Torrealba, if anyone's interested. There doesn't seem to be a match with the catching-hungry Marlins though. Carroll tosses a new name into the relief market: Dan Wheeler. Would the Rays part with him? Carroll's sources don't think much of the recent Jeff Kent rumor. The White Sox have been aggressive in their relief pursuit; the Twins have been passive in general. The Mets, Rays, and Phillies have...   Continue Reading

Marlins Rumors: Fuentes, Taveras, Torrealba

How about some Marlins rumors from MLB.com's Joe Frisaro? The Marlins still like the Rockies' Brian Fuentes, but aren't willing to trade Chris Volstad for him (it's unclear whether the Rockies asked, but he's in line with their asking price for other teams). The Fish were previously linked to their expansion-mate on two other players, center fielder Willy Taveras and catcher Yorvit Torrealba. Frisaro's source says that discussion is dead. Keep in mind that the Rockies are in third place, six games out. They may not want to throw in the towel.   Continue Reading

Odds & Ends: Nady, Loewen, Torrealba

Just a few loose ends: Adam Loewen's career as a pitcher is over. The once highly-touted prospect is planning to reinvent himself as an outfielder/first baseman rather than opt for surgery and face a year and a half off. Dejan Kovacevic reports that Xavier Nady was out of the lineup on Saturday not because of any pending trade, but because Manager John Russell wanted to give him another day to catch up to himself after a number of days spent sitting in a hospital for the birth of his son, Xavier Jr. Yorvit Torrealba is still unhappy as a backup...   Continue Reading

Marlins Inquire On Ivan Rodriguez

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald writes of the Marlins' pursuit of a catcher, which has been going on for several weeks now. The Fish would like to find an upgrade on Matt Treanor, who is currently on the DL with a hip strain. However, they're not impressed by available backstops Paul Lo Duca, Yorvit Torrealba, and Dave Ross. Jackson adds an interesting name - the Marlins asked the Tigers about Ivan Rodriguez, but he's not available at this time. They could always sign him in the offseason if the price is right. We revisited the trade market for catchers...   Continue Reading

Reds Rumors: Weathers, Ross, Harang, Dunn

Time for a look at the Reds. They're currently 11.5 games back in the NL Central and 8 out of the wild card. You might imagine the Reds are sellers, but GM Walt Jocketty won't commit yet. The Reds' current road trip against division foes may be the deciding factor. Jocketty says he's been getting more phone calls since the CC Sabathia trade. Apparently interest has centered on reliever David Weathers and catcher Dave Ross. The Marlins could make sense for both, though they're only said to have interest in Ross. The Fish are eager to snare a backstop, and...   Continue Reading

Rockies Trade Talk: Torrealba, Taveras, Podsednik, Herges

Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News reports the Marlins have inquired on the availability of Rockies' catcher Yorvit Torrealba, and outfielders Willy Taveras and Scott Podsednik. Torrealba has been on Marlins radar and there's continuing speculation that they will be buyers come July 31st. Meanwhile, St. Louis inquired on pitcher Matt Herges to provide a veteran pressence in their bullpen.   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Torrealba, Teixeira, Butler

Time to round up some linkage. The Brewers' GM, assistant GM, and manager had a long private chat today. 2002's #1 overall pick, Bryan Bullington, was designated for assignment today by the Pirates. Still can't believe this guy was picked first overall. Andy Phillips' journey continues: he's back with the Reds. The Rockies will honor Yorvit Torrealba's request by listening to trade offers for him. His stock is low, and the Marlins aren't interested despite their plan to add a catcher. Mark Teixeira would prefer not to be traded this year. By the way, the Braves are at least considering...   Continue Reading

Rockies Rumors: Holliday, Fuentes, Torrealba

The Rockies have been even worse than the Padres - 19 games under .500, 10 games out in a lousy division. According to Tracy Ringolsby, they'll decide at the All-Star break whether to officially become sellers. Let's start with closer Brian Fuentes, whose ERA jumped from 2.56 to 3.94 last night. Reports had the suitors at the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Phillies, and A's. Ringolsby says to cross the A's off the list and add the Rays, Cubs, and Cardinals. Ken Rosenthal tossed the Cubs into the mix on June 12th, but then changed that report. Troy E. Renck adds...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Hanley, Salcedo, Torrealba

Time to round 'em up... Rob Neyer guesses B.J. Upton is the next to get a long-term deal from the Rays. Back on April 24th, Jayson Stark wrote that the Upton family "has its own ideas about the market value of both brothers." Expect a Hanley Ramirez press conference today, or this weekend at the latest. Tribe Report walks us through the Edward Salcedo confusion. Yorvit Torrealba's agent has filed a grievance against the Mets over their nearly-signed three-year deal. Jon Heyman says nothing's imminent with Ken Griffey Jr. Buster Olney wrote today that the Mariners are "not especially gung-ho"...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Jenkins, Piazza, Kuroda

Random rumors for this evening... ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Rays have contacted Geoff Jenkins' agent. They're eyeing him to replace Delmon Young in right field. Cubs lefty Scott Eyre exercised his $3.8MM player option for 2008. Terrmel Sledge never quite caught on in the U.S., so he's headed to Japan. I thought he was a sleeper entering 2007 as he'd posted a .985 OPS in Triple A in '06. The Yorvit Torrealba deal is official at two years and $7.25MM with a $4MM mutual option for 2010. Mutual options never get exercised by both sides so that doesn't..   Continue Reading

Rockies Sign Torrealba, Herges

The Denver Post is reporting that the Rockies have re-signed catcher Yorvit Torrealba and middle reliever Matt Herges. They're currently in town for physicals. It's believed that Torrealba will sign for a reasonable $7MM over two years with an option for 2010. Contrary to previous reports, he did not fail a physical with the Mets earlier this month. Wonder why they pulled out of that one. It sounds like the Rox got Herges on a one-year deal, maybe for slightly more than the original $2MM they offered. These signings aren't spectacular. They're both low-risk, low-upside deals. If Torrealba is only..   Continue Reading

Rockies Rumors: Torrealba, Herges, Chacon

Time for a Rockies update, courtesy of the Denver Post's Patrick Saunders. The Rox appear to be making progress with Yorvit Torrealba, though they're leaving the door open for Michael Barrett or Paul Lo Duca. So things are creeping along there. Matt Herges will decide where to pitch within a day or two. It's down to two teams - the Rockies and perhaps the Brewers. He'd like to stay with Colorado but would prefer a two-year deal. Shawn Chacon continues to surface on GM Dan O'Dowd's radar. O'Dowd will only consider Chacon in a relief role, though Chacon's agent seems..   Continue Reading

Rockies Rumors: Herges, Torrealba

Troy E. Renck has the Rockies hot stove buzz, as usual. The Rockies are close with reliever Matt Herges, but other teams remain in the mix. It's known that Herges wants a two-year deal and the Brewers are interested. The Rockies are also making progress on a deal with catcher Yorvit Torrealba. The Mets saw something they didn't like in Torrealba, so he's come back to the Rockies to talk. Renck says the Rockies had previously offered two years and $7MM with a vesting option for 2010 (seems reasonable). Now they might be able to get him without guaranteeing that..   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Cordero, Torrealba, Koskie, Clement

Just browsing the web this morning: Troy Renck of the Denver Post speculates that the Mets deal with Yorvit Torrealba might have fallen apart because of the catcher's shoulder issues. This is based on Torrealba having missed time in 2006 with two shoulder injuries. The deal fell apart when it was thought to be complete, with only the physical remaining. The Rockies have also inquired on Matt Clement. Renck mentions the Diamondbacks as also having interest in the 33-year-old righty, adding them to the aforementioned Padres and Royals. Clement has thrown just 65.1 innings in the past two years. The..   Continue Reading

Mets Deal With Torrealba Falls Apart

It seemed pretty official, but it appears that Yorvit Torrealba will not be behind the plate for the Mets next year. Sources started whispering this morning that the deal was falling apart, and the Mets brass confirmed it this afternoon. "The Mets did not reach an agreement with Yorvit Torrealba," Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said, "and there are no current negotiations." Torrealba's agent, Melvin Roman, declined to comment on the situation. Looks like Omar might be getting on the phone with Paul LoDuca sometime soon. Yorvit was looking at a three-year, $14.4 million deal with the Mets. Joe Pawlikowski is..   Continue Reading

Latest On Torrealba/Castro Situation

UPDATE, 11-16-07: As expected, Torrealba has inked a three-year deal with the Mets. Newsday reports the deal is worth $14.4MM. Since Torrealba was a Type B free agent, the Rockies will get a supplemental pick for their loss. FROM 11-15-07: One half of Omar Minaya's desired catching tandem seems set: Ramon Castro has signed a two-year, $4MM contract. It'll be announced after he has a physical. Honestly I thought Castro could've done better and marketing himself as a starter, but I guess he's happy in New York. The other part is waiting to see if Yorvit Torrealba will accept the..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Kendrick, Uggla, Haren

Another random collection of rumorage... The Braves have "many millions more" to spend on players this winter. One emailer suggested that maybe the Braves will offer arbitration to Andruw Jones and he'll accept. Corey Patterson and the Nationals have mutual interest. Baseball Prospectus' Joe Sheehan considers him a possible bargain, noting that he is only 28. We figured the Padres and Matt Clement had mutual interest. Now it's official. Clement wants a one-year deal with incentives. Tracy Ringolsby confirms that Yorvit Torrealba wants a three-year deal. He says the Rockies are at two years, $7MM, the Marlins are in the..   Continue Reading

Mets Close To Deals With Torrealba, Castro

UPDATE, AFTERNOON OF 11-14-07: Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog suggests that the Mets are offering Torrealba a three-year, $15MM deal. Yikes. He's barely more than a backup to me. UPDATE, MORNING OF 11-14-07: Ken Rosenthal agrees, it looks like a Torrealba/Castro tandem for the Mets. Interestingly they're expected to split playing time about evenly. Creative! FROM 11-13-07: The Associated Press is reporting that the Mets are close to re-signing catcher Ramon Castro. I'd figured Castro would ask for starter money, but maybe not. The Mets also plan on making an offer to free agent catcher Yorvit Torrealba, according to ESPN Radio..   Continue Reading

Mets Targeting Livan Hernandez?

Ben Shpigel of the New York Times has some new Mets info for us today. Surprisingly, Shpigel believes the one free agent starter the Mets will seriously consider is Livan Hernandez. That is odd because I had read Livan wasn't high on Omar Minaya's list. We've seen the Mets connected to free agents Byung-Hyun Kim, Carlos Silva, Hiroki Kuroda, Kyle Lohse, and Jason Jennings so far this offseason. As far as some unsung trade opportunities, my Mets guy says Ervin Santana, Chris Capuano, Claudio Vargas, and Noah Lowry are being considered. According to Shpigel, the Mets hope to re-sign Ramon..   Continue Reading

Marlins Interested In Torrealba, Barrett, Maroth

Joe Capozzi checks in with a look at the Marlins' approach toward free agency this winter. It sounds like the Fish are willing to spend a few bucks to upgrade on Miguel Olivo in the catcher spot. Do they go for the defensive-minded Yorvit Torrealba, or the typically offensive-minded Michael Barrett? So far the Marlins are leaning toward Torrealba, but would have to beat the Rockies' two-year, $6MM offer. And the Mets' level of interest probably just increased with Jorge Posada staying with the Yankees. Barrett has a Jeffrey Loria connection, but might seek a two-year deal for $8MM or..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Garcia, Greene, DeJesus

With so many rumors, there's a need for a daily Odds and Ends post to catch 'em all. Buster Olney talked to Freddy Garcia's agent. He's looking at a June return from shoulder surgery. Indians GM Mark Shapiro made an offer on Brad Lidge. The Astros didn't even reply. They did hear back from the Marlins on their Miguel Cabrera inquiry. The price is seemingly too high for talks to continue. Peter Gammons says that before the Astros got Michael Bourn, the White Sox pushed for a Chad Qualls for Ryan Sweeney swap. Evan Grant notes that the Rangers have..   Continue Reading

Rockies Rumors: Atkins, Barrett, Fukumori

What are the Rockies up to as they plot to defend their NL pennant? Tracy Ringolsby and Troy E. Renck have the latest. Ringolsby says Garrett Atkins is staying put, which should help the third baseman relax a little bit. This echoes Renck's sentiments yesterday. Renck also noted that the Rox won't be offering Atkins a multiyear deal anytime soon. Yesterday Renck said that after Yorvit Torrealba, the Rockies were considering Jose Molina, Paul Lo Duca, Jason Kendall, and Ramon Castro for catcher. However Ringolsby says today that Michael Barrett and Kendall are the main targets. Renck has come on..   Continue Reading

Latest Rockies Rumors: Matsui, Torrealba, Holliday

As usual, the Denver Post's Troy E. Renck has the scoop on all things Rockies. The Rockies have made a two year offer to Kaz Matsui in the neighborhood of $6MM total. That's fair; we all know his home/road splits. The Cubs and Padres were named as other interested parties yesterday, but the Padres have decided to go with internal options at second base. Why the Cubs would add a second baseman is still beyond me. They already have Ryan Theriot, Mark DeRosa, Mike Fontenot, and Eric Patterson. The Cubs' plan to add speed concerns me. The Rox have also..   Continue Reading

Latest Mets Rumors: A-Rod, Silva, Blanton

Plenty of action around the Mets lately; Omar Minaya has his work cut out for him. Hat tip to MetsBlog for several of the links. The sensational storyline here is that Minaya will meet with Scott Boras to discuss Alex Rodriguez. However, Boras and Minaya might spend more time discussing Kyle Lohse and Eric Gagne than A-Rod - the Mets' focus is pitching. Newsday's Ken Davidoff reminds us of past trade talks regarding Joe Blanton, Jose Contreras, and Jon Garland. Those talks may be re-opened, though Davidoff notes that the White Sox aren't enamored of Lastings Milledge. Additionally, the Mets..   Continue Reading

Rockies Expect A Quiet Offseason

Nate Silver of Baseball Prospectus recently wrote in reference to the Rockies: Teams that overachieve expectations tend to keep everything in place, and in fact that’s exactly what Charlie Monfort is saying. This is likely to be one of the bigger misplays of the offseason. Indeed, no one is expecting any kind of shake-up or blockbuster. That said, Tracy Ringolsby indicates that teams will inquire on Brian Fuentes and Garrett Atkins over the next few months. The free agent market for closers and third basemen isn't robust. Ringoslby notes that Josh Fogg may seek the Jason Marquis special - three..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Fukudome, Boras, Encarnacion

Let's kick the day off with an Odds and Ends post. Daylight savings time means one more hour of rumorage. Bruce Miles loves the idea of Kosuke Fukudome manning right field for the Cubs. He notes that Fukudome would please both the stathead and old-school factions of the team's management. Peter Abraham says Yankees fans should not blame Scott Boras for Alex Rodriguez's departure and demands. The player still calls the shots. By the way, Tyler Kepner feels bad about the way things ended with the Yankees and could try to make good by giving a $30MM discount. Kepner's article..   Continue Reading

Mets, Marlins Interested In Torrealba

According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Mets and Marlins have interest in free agent catcher Yorvit Torrealba. The Rockies would like to bring him back, but otherwise they'll look at Paul Lo Duca or Michael Barrett. The 29 year-old Torrealba hit .255/.323/.376 in 396 ABs this year. Typically he hits for a touch more power. Meanwhile the average NL catcher hit .257/.318/.394 in 2007, so Torrealba's bat is tolerable. Torrealba was lousy at throwing out baserunners this year, checking in at just 19.7% caught stealing. Only Jason Kendall and Johnny Estrada were worse among qualifiers. Oddly..   Continue Reading

State Of The Marlins

The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson has all sorts of info concerning the state of the Florida Marlins. We've heard this before - the Fish can't afford to keep both Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera. Do you trade the cheaper guy, or the more valuable one? As Jackson says, it really just depends on the offers. It wouldn't be a complete shock to see both traded if the Marlins received separate knockout offers on each. The Marlins are likely to non-tender Miguel Olivo, with an eye on bringing Paul Lo Duca back to Florida to provide veteran leadership for the young..   Continue Reading
