Why is it the biggest baseball fans always seem to be those of us who weren’t much of a talent for the sport? I guess we just appreciate how hard it is for the pro’s all that much more…

Posey and Heyward have had great seasons(or half-seasons), but I’m having a hard time figuring out why no one picks the (IMO) most deserving candidate: Jaime Garcia. 4th in NL in ERA, 2nd among rookies in H/9, Top 20 in K/9. Posey has been great but he doesn’t even qualify for the leaderboards on mlb.com.

“Posey has been great but he doesn’t even qualify for the leaderboards on mlb.com.”
Yet he has a higher WAR than Garcia.
It’s really about playing time and value- it’s always hard saying who’s better when you’re talking about position players v pitchers, but people see 400+ ABs of great production from a catcher or 600 ABs of great production as a hitter/defender in RF as better than 160IP of great pitching.

Great points. The fact that Posey’s hard stats (numerical totals) are on par with Heyward, with much fewer AB’s, plus Posey doing it from behind the plate, makes that one a no-brainer in my book.
But Garcia-Posey is a tougher call. 400+ AB from a catcher, or 160 IP from a pitcher? In a case like this, I’m inclined to give the “tie to the contributor”. In other words, the guy who has made bigger impact for his team. And that’s obvious; without Garcia, St. Louis finishes 15 GB instead of 10. Without Posey, San Fran is just about approaching 200 team runs this week…

Love the humility in the final answer, T.
