He’s Keith Hernandez.

why did the cardinals trade cocaine keith in the first place
TAYSLACKER
Because the Cards already had Darrell Porter, Joaquin Andujar, Danny Cox, Tom Herr, David Green and Lonnie Smith and back then, each MLB was limited to 6 coke heads per team.

The Cardinals wanted to use Allen as a starter (and did, and indeed at first he pitched quite well for them in that role), so it wasn’t exactly overpaying for a closer, the Cardinals already had Bruce Sutter. But I agree, they overpaid, to the Mets’ great benefit!

Everytime I think of Keith Hernandez, the Seinfled epsiode where he supposedly spat on Kramer and Newman comes to mind.

Howard, I give you credit. For a young guy (at least young to me, lol) you write a lot about stuff that happened in the past and your articles are always thought provoking. Well done!

BTW, Keith was the best defensive first baseman I ever saw and I was fortunate enough to watch Mark Grace for years and of course the Cat, Andres Gallaraga.

The Braves trade for Barker was the beginning of the end of the Joe Torre era in Atlanta and indirectly set the stage for Bobby Cox to return to the club as GM. Bill Lucas, who died in 1979, assembled the talent that won the division in 1982 and should have repeated in ’83. His successor, John Mullen, was a disaster.

Ummm.. Sally Ride became the first AMERICAN woman in space in 1983. The first woman in space was Valentina Tereshkova in 1963, twenty years earlier.

The Cardinals also felt they had guys like George Hendrick, David Green and Andy VanSlyke who they had to fit into two spots (OF and 1B) so someone was expendable and Hernandez could bring the best return at that time. The Cards realized that Green wasn’t the answer so the dealt him for Jack Clark who helped them get to the World Series in 1985 (a year before Hernendez helped get the Mets there in ’86) and Hendrick to the Pirates for John Tudor (21 wins) who was also instrumental in them getting to the ’85 World Series.

I remember the Mumphrey trade, it was a God send for him. He played two good years after coming from San Diego, but finally succumbed to the pressure of the NY media and the Steinbrenner circus. At the time, George was running the everyday activities and putting himself on the back pages of the newspapers at his players’ expense. Mumphrey went on to actually make the NL AS team the following year. Moreno was just bad.
